Michael Wegenka joins Jessica to dive into a prayer of surrender that Fr. Ciszek wrote for one of his directees. Fr. Michael and Jess discuss:Fr. Ciszek's spirituality of surrender and trust in GodThe line of the prayer, "I ask the grace to accept the sadness in my heart as your will for me in this present moment." Is God's will for me to be sad?Fr. Ciszek's teaching on finding God in the present momentHow you can find healing in seeking God in the present momentHere is the text of Fr. Ciszek's prayer:Prayer of SurrenderLord Jesus Christ, I ask the grace to accept the sadness in my heart, as your will for me, in this moment. I offer it up, in union with your sufferings, for those who are in deepest need of your redeeming grace. I surrender myself to your Father's will and I ask you to help me to move on to the next task that you have set for me.Spirit of Christ, help me to enter into a deeper union with you. Lead me away from dwelling on the hurt I feel:to thoughts of charity for those who need my love,to thoughts of compassion for those who need my care, andto thoughts of giving to those who need my help.As I give myself to you, help me to provide for the salvation of those who come to me in need.May I find my healing in this giving.May I always accept God's will.May I find my true self by living for others in a spirit of sacrifice and suffering.May I die more fully to myself and live more fully in you.As I seek to surrender to the Father's will, may I come to trust that he will do everything for me.To learn more about Fr. Opening Bible verse: Colossians 1:24 Suffering is an effect of original sin.  When Adam and Eve chose their will over the will of God, sin entered the world.   According the the book, He Leadeth Me by Walter Ciszek, S.J., "Just as all men share in the disobedience of Adam, so all men must share in the obedience of Christ to the Father's will. Redemption will be complete only when all men share his obedience....It is not the Father, not God, who inflicts suffering upon us but rather the unredeemed world in which we must labor to do his will, the world in whose redemption we must share." How do we share in the redemption of the world?  We follow the example of Jesus.  We suffer.  We can use our suffering to unite ourselves to Christ. We can co-suffer with him and therefore, become co-redeemers The doors to the Spring '24 session of Pruning To Prosper are open!   What is Pruning To Prosper?   It's my live 6-week group coaching program for Catholic women who want to put faith at the heart of running their homes efficiently.   When is it?   Thursdays from 10am-noon EST beginning April 18th.   What are the topics?   April 18: Who Are You Called To Be? AMDG: A Jesuit Podcast

The basic details of Father Walter Ciszek life sound like a movie: An American Jesuit priest ministering in Eastern Europe around the time of World War II, he was arrested by the Soviet Union and falsely accused of being a Vatican spy. He spent time in a KGB prison and more than a decade in Siberian labor camps. His family and his Jesuit brothers back in the U.S. assumed he was dead. During his captivity, Fr. Ciszek secretly heard confessions, celebrated Mass, baptized, comforted the sick, and ministered to the dying. His unwavering faith sustained him through solitary confinement, torture, and violent interrogations. The John F. Kennedy administration negotiated his release, and he returned to the United States in 1963. In the years following his release, Fr. Ciszek wrote two books, “With God in Russia” and “He Leadeth Me.” The latter book, a spiritual memoir, shot up to the very top of Amazon's bestseller list recently, decades after its publication. Why? The extremely popular Catholic prayer app Hallow, which just ran a Super Bowl commercial a few weeks ago, picked “He Leadeth Me” to anchor their Lenten prayer program this year. It's safe to assume thousands of folks are meeting Fr. Ciszek for the first time. So we thought we'd take the chance to introduce him to AMDG listeners, too. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked Jim Keane to come on the show to talk about Fr. Ciszek and his legacy. Jim is a senior editor at America Media, where he oversees the book reviews, literary essays, the Catholic Book Club and the "Faith and Reason" section. Jim is a fantastic writer and storyteller and he has written several great pieces on Fr. Ciszek over the years. So Mike asked Jim to share some of his favorite Fr. Ciszek stories and reflect on why the biggest Catholic smartphone app around might have picked “He Leadeth Me” to read this Lent. America Media's coverage of Fr. Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., (1904-1984) was born in Shenandoah, PA. He entered the Society of Jesus, and soon after he volunteered to be—after his ordination—a missionary to Russia. Ordained in 1937, he was assigned to a Parish in Albertyn, Poland. After the Russian invasion of Poland, he went with another priest toward Russia, in search for work. But the conditions were miserable, and the prospect very dark. Fr. Ciszek was faced with a terribly disappointing situation. In the midst of that desolation, the only strength was the occasional celebration of the holy Mass, in secret and in the woods… His priesthood, and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist helped Fr. Ciszek persevere through terrible hardships. What is there in the Mass, what is there in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ that can give us such interior strength and endurance? - Fr. Walter Ciszek's LIFE story can be read in the book: Walter Ciszek, With God in Russia, Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 1997. - Fr. Walter Ciszek's spiritual commentary to his story (and the quote I read in the episode) can be found in:  Walter Ciszek, He Leadeth Me, Image, New York, 1973. - Fr. The more deeply one reads the fathers, the more one begins to see that what is being revealed is the terrain of the human heart. The fathers do not present us with a varnished truth about ourselves or our sin. The path that leads to freedom and holiness is Christ alone. It is by his grace and mercy that we are brought healing and hope. So much of the spiritual life involves letting go of the illusions that we cling to about ourselves and life in this world. It involves slowly breaking down those defenses that, while fulfilling their purpose, are too costly.  They prevent us from seeking healing where it can truly be found. We are called to more than just cope with reality. We are called to enter into He who is Reality and allow Him to heal us and transfigure us by His grace.  This brings us to a state of deep mourning. We gaze into the abyss, the hell that is sin. Yet while painful, St John begins to explain, it gives place to incorruptible chastity and the warmth of the “immaterial Light that radiates more than fire!” --- Text of chat during the group:  00:16:42 CMoran: My family in Slovakia make it...you can run your lawnmower on their stuff.   00:25:56 Anthony: Father, would you please distinguish these tears from the tears of sin born of scrupulous fear?   00:30:50 Eric Ewanco: www.scrupulousanonymous.org   00:31:44 Anthony: Thank you, Father, that is a good way to distinguish the two fears.   00:33:47 CMoran: Would St Philip Neri be a good example of this?   00:36:15 Bridget McGinley: I heard that Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago stated that those with a sense of humor had a greater constitution to bear the trials. I have not read this book but it struck me because I have read Fr. Walter Ciszek with God in Russia and I cannot imagine the sorrows.   00:40:16 Anthony: I guess St. Francis had this blessed, gladdening sorrow.  His fear or sorrow alternated with bliss, but although he was lighthearted, he was solid in God's reality.   00:43:41 Daniel Allen: Maybe it's how it's worded but how does fear of an “uncompassionate and inexorable judge” give way to love for that same uncompassionate judge?   00:45:22 carol: “Sadness purifies us. Man is truly man in sadness. In joy he is changed, he becomes someone else. In sadness he becomes that which he truly is. And this is the way, par excellence, that he approaches God…” Elder Epiphanios   00:50:28 Rachel: St Silouan   00:51:20 Rachel: This is what Christ told him when he had fallen into pride and was allowed to see his state.   00:54:51 Anthony: When I started finding catechetical materials to take in, I came across a popular internet Orthodox radio station.  One of the things they seemed to emphasize is that it is wrong to meditate on the passion of Christ - which is quite sad as well as triumphant.  It looks like that is incorrect and not the true way to orient our minds, but we should meditate on this?   00:59:35 Rebecca Thérèse: I find the poem Pastorcico (the little shepherd) by St John of the Cross very helpful in meditating on the Passion because it emphasises Christ's love in giving himself on the Cross for us. So to meditate on the Passion is to meditate on the great love of Christ for us.   01:01:33 Ambrose Little, OP: Perhaps there is something in this related to the notion of the love of the Law, that it is through the Law (and its judgment, as so, the Judge) that we see what is evil, truly repugnant to Life and Love (that is, the nature of God). And seeing that stark God-repelling reality allows us to more clearly see, by contrast, the Goodness and Love of God, and to desire Him all the more because of that seeing. The fear of God is the fear of sin and its consequences—the beginning of wisdom. Seeing what God hates and judges harshly against reveals to us the love of God, because He hates what harms us, what pulls us away from Him. 01:12:21 Daniel Allen: This makes sense. If you plead guilty you will skip past trying to prove your innocence and simply ask for mercy from the judge. But if you are busy trying to put up a defense you have no time to simply beg for mercy.   01:16:26 Henry Peresie: That happens often in Facebook.   01:22:48 CMoran: Thank you Father...great session!   01:22:54 Jeffrey Ott: Amen, thank you!   01:22:56 Rachel: Thank you   01:23:01 Rebecca Thérèse: Thank you

One cool thing about the Jesuits is the huge number of incredible men who have served the Lord so faithfully over the centuries. A lot of these guys are so well-known you can call them by just a single name: Ignatius, Xavier, Gonzaga, Canisius, Faber, Claver, Arrupe, Teilhard, Hopkins. But there have been thousands of other fascinating Jesuits who aren't quite as famous, and it's always fun to learn about them. Guest Robert Ellsberg has forgotten more about saints and other holy men and women than most of us will ever know. Robert is the editor-in-chief and publisher of Orbis Books, the esteemed publishing arm of the Maryknoll order. He is also the author of “Blessed Among Us”, a column on saints and other saintly witnesses that appears in the monthly Catholic prayer resource “Give Us This Day.” He has written about over 1000 saints, both canonized and not. Host Mike Jordan Laskey wanted to know which Jesuits Robert has encountered in his research and own faith journey have inspired him the most. In particular, who are three under-known Jesuits we might all want to meet? Robert picked three three: Jean Pierre de Caussade, Alfred Delp and Walter Ciszek. The conversation also veered to Dorothy Day often, which is going to happen anytime you get Robert on the line. He served as the editor of the Catholic Worker newspaper in the final years of Dorothy Day's life. In fact, Dorothy introduced him to the work of Jean Pierre de Caussade, and he shares that story in the episode. He also talked his famous father, Daniel Ellsberg, who in 1971 released to the press a classified document related to the United States' history in Vietnam called the “Pentagon Papers.” His dad's bold act of heroism had a huge impact on Robert's life, especially in forming his strong pacifist views. This is a Lenten reading of Father Walter Ciszek's, He Leadeth Me. One chapter will be posted every other day throughout Lent, recorded for the Mens Roundtable, the mens group of the parish, as a way of spiritually accompanying our group reading of this text. Captured by the Russian army during World War II and convicted of being a "Vatican spy," American Jesuit, Father Walter J. Ciszek spent 23 years in Soviet prisons and the labor camps of Siberia. He endured unspeakable hardship before being returned to the States. In this book, he reflects not only on the trials he endured, but also with both simplicity and depth about his personal prayer, which alone eased the pain and sustained him. This being the Year of Saint Ignatius, we thought it fitting to read this book, as He Leadeth Me offers the reader an excellent way of learning the Spiritual Exercises and Discernment of Spirits from one of Saint Ignatius' most beloved sons. Father Ciszek's cause for canonization was opened in 1990, just six years after his death.

In this episode we discuss first how God created the world from nothing, and how he continues to maintain the world in its being. This action of God implies that He provides the means for each being to obtain its purpose in this world. However, the reality of EVIL is a stumbling block for many to accept that a good God could have created this world. With our guest, John Dejak, we look at the life and writings of a great priest, Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., to understand a bit more how to accept the reality of evil in our world, while using it to give greater glory to God and bring about good in the world. John speaks about the life of Fr. Ciszek, and gives us some insights into his spiritual life, in the midst of the terrible sufferings he endured while a prisoner in the Soviet Union, and even after that, while he lived in America during turbulent times. Apart from “With God in America”, Fr. Ciszek is the author of “With God in Russia” and “He Leadeth Me”, which we highly recommend you to read, if you want to have some profound insights as to how endure sufferings in a saintly way. All the principles discussed here, about creation, Diving Providence and evil, can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 299 through 314.
