It got me thinking that I really want to start something with my Legacy Fiber Artz minis from previous year advents. Maybe a Granny Stripe blanket? Or perhaps another Recollections crochet blanket. I made one in the summer of 2022 (check out my Ravelry Project Page). It uses fingering weight yarn held triple and treble crochets. You work each row right to left and cut each time. between each set of clusters you use a main color. Debating using Fibernymph 10g minis from last year's advent for those rows (notes say it used- about 8g per row but that's held triple which might just be too annoying). I'm debating making a smaller blanket that will live on the backseat of my car, draped over. Mostly for the pop of color with my gray interior but I bet the kids would use it when they're back there. I'd also like to make a crocheted granny square tank top for the summer so I could potentially use some of my minis for that. Do you have any ideas for me?   From the Armchair   The Wandering Purl YouTube channel- I have a Gilmore Girls sock sized bag from Bethany and I know lots of you are fans of her, but I didn't realize she had a channel!  Enjoying her content, check it out. There are five planets in retrograde this week and Sonia C. has really been feeling the drain. Sonia C. has just been fighting an uphill battle all week and her spirit has just been blah. Sonia T. feels it also. We are all being cosmically crushed right now. Maybe this is just a message that we need to stay put and stay inside.    This week's theme is about: How to navigate being energetically off.    Highlights: Your two favorite Sonias are not in flow right now [2:50]  It took Sonia T. 47 times to fim a one minute video! [4:10] As Sonia T. was planning her trip with her sister, something inside of her was saying that this trip wasn't going to happen. [6:50] Sonia T. is disappointed, but she felt these feelings a week ago and didn't know how to explain it back then. [8:20] If you're not willing to give yourself a time out, the universe will find a way to do it by force. [13:25] Feeling drained? Tap into your inner child mode. [23:55] Since all these planets are in retrograde, it's okay to take a break and relax. [29:05] Tool of the week. [40:35] Question of the week. [46:35]   One of the things that keeps people from being intuitive is the fear of disappointment. Sonia T. had a gut feeling that her trip with her sister was just not going to happen. She was putting off the planning of the entire trip and then she'd have sprints of guilt that she had to get through it. Something was definitely energetically off. Sonia T. felt it a week ago and just couldn't explain why and her ego brain kept trying to push her/force forward because it was afraid of being disappointed.    Sonia T. can't explain why her bags weren't already packed to go see her sister. Sonia T. can't explain why her body was resisting it, but she doesn't need to know. She is just reminded that something inside of her was connected to the real energy around it and her logical brain was just trying to bypass it. It's an important reminder to just trust your intuition.    Question of the Week: I have a very sensitive, empathic 5-year-old boy. How can I help support him when he's out of the home and with other children? He gets overloaded.    Tool of the Week: Sometimes you're in an exploration period to search for the next meaning. It's okay to not have direction/purpose/a goal every single waking moment of your life.    Continue on Your Journey: More Sonia Choquette at www.soniachoquette.com More Sonia Tully at www.soniatully.com Connect with Sabrina at www.sabrinatully.com Join Sonia Choquette's Vibe Tribe Follow Sonia Choquette on Instagram Follow Sonia Tully on Instagram Buy Sonia and Sabrina's Book You Are Amazing Ask your intuitive questions at: itsallrelatedpodcastquestions@gmail.com Masterclass: You're Glorious Life by Sonia Tully

Fill up the kitchen sink with hot water. As you go about rinsing dishes, put anything with stuck on food into the sink and move onto the next dish. By the time the cleaner dishes are loaded into the dishwasher, the soaking dishes will be ready to rinse and load as well!Deeper Time Management Thought: When something isn't working for us, we often look at the sunk costs (what we've invested in this thing in terms of time, money, and energy) more than the opportunity costs (what we're missing out on by not investing time, money, and energy in something new). Considering both and being able to switch things up is just as important, or more important, than staying on the same course.Links mentioned in the show:Freakonomics Podcast Episode #4215-Minute Egg Drop SoupAir Fryer Chicken Fajita DinnerChicken Tikka MasalaInstant Pot Beef StroganoffAllie's Healthier Venison StroganoffKorean Beef and Rice Bowls

063: Six Reason Why We’re not More Curious About People

You Were Made for This

Play Episode Listen Later May 6, 2020 15:16

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s episode, where as always, I’m here to help you find more joy in your relationships, because that’s what you were made for. In episode 62 last week, “Vaccine Now Available for this Relational Virus,” We talked about CD-20, the curiosity deficiency virus that keeps us from deeper relationship with people. I mentioned there’s a vaccine now available - developed by the CDC, Curiosity Deficiency Council in Bismarck, ND. It’s a simple vaccine. Here it is: Ask People Questions. Today’s episode examines 6 reasons we are not more curious about others, why we don’t take the vaccine that cures our curiosity deficiency, and the benefits we experience when we do ask people questions. Especially people close to us. Here’s reason number one we’re not more curious enough about people to ask questions of them: 1. We may not ask questions because we’re overloaded, with limited capacity for the work relationships require. We may limit our inquires because we need to limit the number of close relationships in our life, especially now in the spring of 2020 when we’re working from home and home schooling the kids, An article in the April 24, 2020 Wall Street Journal talks about “Zoom Fatigue.” It’s about how people are overloaded with relationships gone online. But even before the coronavirus hit, a lot of us had been swamped with the busyness of life. Much of which is self-induced. So this overload is one reason we’re not as curious about people. Because our curiosity could potentially create more work for us, depending where our curiosity leads us. 2. We sometimes don’t ask questions of others because we’re afraid of what we might find out. We’re afraid more may be required of me, especially more of my time, if I knew what was truly going on with the people in my life. 3. A third reason we may not be curious about the lives of others in our circle of relationships is because we rely on our assumptions about them instead. We relate based on our per-conceived notions about people. We think if we know their Enneagram number, their Myers-Briggs score, or their Strength Finders skill, we pretty much know all we need to know about another person. I’ve seen too many times where people are put in boxes or categories from the latest personality test, which short-circuits the effort required to understand others. We are all far more complex than what a personality test tells us. These assumptions distance us from each other. 4. We’re reluctant to ask questions, for fear of being perceived as “nosy.” I find this reason for our lack of curiosity to be most interesting to me. It comes up often in workshops I give on listening and asking questions. Invariably someone will ask something along the lines of: “But if I ask questions of people close to me, won’t they think I’m just being nosy? I was always taught ‘If someone wants you to know something about them, they will tell you.’” This is one of those “exception” questions that often come up in workshops. It’s usually from someone in the crowd who disagrees with what the presenter is saying, or who wants to hijack the direction the speaker is taking with his own agenda. Or who just loves to hear himself talk. They want the workshop leader to focus on the exception, not the norm. The “I have always believed if people wanted you to know they’d tell you” comment reveals a person who most likely comes from a background or culture of secrets. They hold things close to the vest. Their theme song is we need to be private, and we mustn’t invade the privacy of others. You often find this dynamic in people who grew up in families where there was addiction, sexual abuse, or other dysfunctions. All of this raises the question of what’s the difference between being nosy and being genuinely curious about others? I posted this question on Facebook recently, and here are three really good answers I received: Rita. "Curious people genuine empathize with others and what they learn about them. They delight in, rejoice over, wonder further, grieve with...in order to grow deeper in relationship. Nosiness satisfies a fleshly yearning to know more, not to know better." Joan. "I think nosy people ask questions about situations or things that have happened, like in the neighborhood or even in family situations that they need to know so they can then pass it on and gossip. I think a genuine curious person wants to know about you, your feelings and situations that are true to the core of your being. They want to make sure you are ok and demonstrate care and concern out of love. A curious person will share of themselves and maybe share a situation that they themselves have experienced. Curious is more heart centered, nosy is more informational." Rob. "I cannot add much to the above. I always referred to myself as being nosy when I asked people questions. Recently I was corrected by someone who told me I was curious and should use that word. I think that is true because I do not just want information but want to know something about that person. People are interesting and we do like to talk about ourselves. At least I do!" ___________________________ There is an element of culture and personality to this issue, too. Some cultures around the world are very private, and there are others where personal privacy is non-existent. Personality is part of it too. I’ve found that the more extraverted among us don’t even think about what questions to ask others. While the introverted, think of questions, but are too shy to ask them. Here are a few more of my thoughts on the differences between nosy and curious: Nosy doesn’t enrich your life. Curiosity does. Nosy is the cousin of gossip. They are close relatives. Nosy people ask so they can evaluate others and compare. Curious people ask to understand. Curiosity requires something of us. Nosiness doesn’t. Being nosy separates us. Curiosity brings us together. Nosy people assume there is a deeper relationship than actually exists. Nosy people use information they gain from you against you. Curious people use information they get from you for you. Finally, I’ve come to the conclusion that our fear of being nosy in our relationships is usually just a cop-out. Just an excuse to get us off the hook from failing to honor people by wanting to understand what life is like for them. 5. A fifth reason we are not more curious about people is that we’re content to live with shallow relationships. We only ask questions to get caught up on the news in each other’s lives, rather than on what’s happening in our heart, soul, and mind. A lot of people are poor listeners because they want to be. It takes work to be a better listener, and for them, the work involved is not worth the effort. 6. A final reason we’re not curious enough to ask questions of the people in our lives is that we don’t know what to ask! Our curiosity muscles have atrophied. And for some people like this, it’s not their fault. They may not have any role models who have shown them what it’s like to be be genuinely curious about others. The good news is that I can work with people like this. We all can. When we get better at exercising our curiosity muscles, it shows others how they too can have deeper relationships when we understand more about each other. _____________________________________ In next week’s episode I’ll share a very simple, but powerful question we can ask if we’re curious enough about other people to want to know and understand them. And it’s nowhere close to being nosy or invading anyone’s privacy. Here are 6 benefits of being curious enough to ask people questions about themselves: 1. It gets us out of our self-focused life to see the wonder of what God has created in the life of another. It draws us closer to God as we better understand our brothers and sisters created in his image. For when we see how much God loves someone else, warts and all, it makes us appreciate God all the more. 2. Asking questions of others opens doors for deeper connection with them. 3. It’s a great remedy for depression and loneliness. 4. When we understand people better because of how they answer our questions, it causes us to be grateful for what we have, that others do not. 5. Being curious enough to ask people questions draws out the experience and wisdom from the quiet introverts among us. We can learn for other people’s mistakes when we understand them better. If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. Our show in a sentence When we’re curious enough to ask questions of others, it opens up the potential for deeper relationships with people that go beyond news and the shallow things of life. Here’s what you can do in response to today’s show Do some self-reflecting and ask yourself, Am I really concerned about being nosy, or is that a cop out for my laziness with regard to the work relationships require? Who is someone in my life that strike me as a person I would more like to be? Who could I initiate with, by asking thoughtful questions. As always, I’d like to hear you thoughts about this topic. You can share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Or you can send them to me in an email to john@caringforothers.org. Closing I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Now for Our Relationship Quote of the Week Sometimes the questions we ask are more important than the answers we think we know.                                                                                      ~ Ruth Haley Barton That’s all for today. See you next week. Goodbye for now.

In This Week’s Episode…..Power We've all experienced moments of meltdown and overwhelm. The question is, how do we navigate our way through these times? In today's episode, Danielle and Ani share their roadmaps via stories and personal experiences that are certain to lift and help you through those difficult moments. As a bonus, be sure to keep an eye out for their special in-studio guest! Point #1: What Can You Do Right Now? When you’re feeling a sense of overwhelm, sometimes it takes someone outside of yourself to help calm you down and to remind you to take a deep breath, take a step back, slow down, look at everything you have to do, and then ask yourself the question, “What is due FIRST? What’s most important?” Several years ag when Garrett & Danielle had moved to Arizona with their little family, Danielle found herself in a situation where paying bills was hit and miss. She asked herself the question, “What can I do RIGHT NOW?” She had no customers on the books, no clients, and was literally starting from scratch. “I did have a whole book of business back in Utah, so for a year, I flew to Utah once a month, worked three 12-hour days, and made as much in three days as I could in a month in Arizona.” QUESTION Taking a step back from your situation, what is one thing you can do right now to move you towards what is you are seeking and wanting?   Point #2: Dream a Little Dream Danielle is a visual person and, as such, will often dream when she’s feeling stressed out about something. She had a recurring dream where her family was on a ship in the pouring rain. She could see the light at the end of the tunnel and paddled vigorously to reach it, but every time she was nearly there, a massive wave of water pushed her back. After a year, Danielle finally got over the anxiety she was experiencing. She had stockpiled some cash, built momentum, and it was at that point Danielle lit a fire under Garrett when she told him how much she was making, which she had previously kept hidden from him. This was a turning point in their lives. QUESTION Do your dreams seem to reflect what is happening in your life?     Point #3: Momentum Danielle: When you think you’ve made it and you slow down to rest, you almost end up self-sabotaging. If you ever start having a lot of success and build momentum, do not self-sabotage! “Once you’ve hit a certain growth point, figure out where your next point is and create a plan to get to that new point. “If you don’t keep up with what you’ve done,” adds Ani, “you’re going to lose everything you have.” QUESTION What steps can you begin taking today to keep the momentum you’re currently experiencing?   Point #4: Sometimes You’re Gonna Cry Ani recently took on a new project and for the first week and a half felt overwhelmed and was doubting her ability to pull it off. She told herself, “Ok, you have ONE MINUTE to cry!” That quickly evolved into working through the tears. An artist who was having a meltdown reached out to Ani recently for some help. Ani said to her, “Ok, set a timer. You have FIVE MINUTES to cry. However much you want to cry, do it in those five minutes and then fucking move on!” QUESTION When was a moment you pushed through something with tears running down your cheeks? What lesson did you learn about yourself?   Point #5:  It’s All About the Reps Although Danielle has viewed herself as an introvert lacking the skills of a speaker and great communicator, she is very passionate and intuitive. She has always thought of herself as confident and one who is comfortable in her own skin, and so it bothered her that she wasn’t able to communicate or get on stage and speak, which is one of the things she always found attractive about her husband, Garrett. “One of my goals over the past ten years was to become a better educator, a better communicator, and a better speaker, so I continually forced myself to do things I was uncomfortable with.” Today, Danielle is doing podcasts, teaching & speaking in front of large audiences, and shares videos on many social media platforms. Her secret to becoming a new human being? “Putting in the reps of things I’m uncomfortable with.” QUESTION What growth have you experienced due to reps on your part?   Quote of the Week: “Sometimes, you have to have those hard conversations, and those hard looks inside of your life, take a breath, and then ask yourself, “Where do I start TODAY?” Don’t wait until January; begin today moving toward your goals.” —Danielle K White “You have to see yourself as that person and ask, “Ok, if that’s what she looks like, and if that’s what she can accomplish, what do I have to do to become her? What do I have to do to be the person who has accomplished these things?” –Anianne Rivera
