Saying "I'm over 40" is like saying, "Everything I did for my health up to this point doesn't matter." If you feel things aren't working like they used to, this episode is for you. I had the opportunity to chat with Amy White. She's an anti-aging nutritionist who gets straight to the heart of how you can look and feel younger - starting now!The "Legacy Thought of The Week: "does your body need a tune-up?" As I chatted with Amy, I thought about how our bodies are a lot like cars, they need the right fuel, regular maintenance, and sometimes a more extensive tune-up to make sure they are working properly.I know that when my car breaks down, it is usually because one of these three things has occurred:1) I didn't change the oil regularly (this kills engines)2) I didn't properly maintain the engine (this can cause poor performance)3) I ran something through the engine that caused damage (for example, not changing the air filter or not driving over 3000 miles between oil changes).Healthy living is similar to this. If you want to, you must make sure that you are taking care of yourself in all areas: emotional, mental, and physical. You need to get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. When you do this, your body will work better and last longer!
Today's episode is very special because I am celebrating my fifth anniversary as a twin mom. In addition to hearing from two exceptional guests, I will share one of the biggest lessons I have learned since having twins. Many people talk about the need to have great time management skills as a parent, but what if you actud to have better life management skills? The idea of life management and understanding what my priorities are has been a lifesaver. Key things to rememberJust because something needs to be done doesn't make it a priority.Just because it is a priority to someone else, doesn't automatically make it a priority for you. Even if that someone else is your child. You have full authority over what is a priority in your life.
In this episode, host LaKeisha Entsuah explores the “Art of Self Care” and how our self-care needs change based on your current phase of the self-care cycle. She also discusses how to make a self-care plan for each phase.Legacy Thought of The WeekDo you know your limits? It is a question we are not always willing to ask ourselves, but it is necessary if we truly want to move past the hampster wheel of overwhelm and burnout. Key TakeawaysThe three phases of the self-care cycle are creation, elevation, and restoration. The “Creation” phase is where you are building and preparing for the next thing in your life. It could be a time to prepare for a new job or baby. Whatever you are preparing for it is identified by a season of balanced input and output. There is white space in your schedule, and you have room for the little (or big) luxuries in life. The “Elevation” phase is a period of achieving. You are moving on to bigger, better, or next in your life. Your period of elevation could be a promotion, additional work responsibilities, or a more significant role in a volunteer organization. It is marked by maximum output with minimum input. The minimum is not to the point of operating at a deficit, but it is just enough to keep you going. You are thriving through efficiency. The “Restoration” phase is a time of replenishing, building yourself back up, and nurturing your mind, body, and spirit. Your period of restoration is a time when you turn inward, increased reflection, and rest. It is marked by minimum output and maximum input. This may be when you spend more time at home and fewer social interactions. You may be recovering from a busy season at work or a traumatic life event. To make an effective plan for each phase, you must know your limits, be clear about your needs and be willing to be completely honest with yourself. Mother's day can trigger most people for different reasons. It could be that they lost a child or are struggling to get children. Although most women try to maintain that smile and laughter, they're suffering within. How can society approach and support childless women? How can we understand them and not question them unless they let us in their space? In this episode, I share why mother's day could be a trigger for some women. Before having my daughter, I had been on an infertility journey without success, which took an emotional toll on me. Mother's day was never appealing to me as it's something I desperately wanted to be a part of.In this session, I share the best approaches when dealing with childless women or those who've lost their kids. Tune in and learn how best we can treat women on their fertility journey or those undergoing child loss.Live Well Tip of the Week: You don't owe anyone any explanations.A Quote from Our Guest: There are some things we shouldn't ask. We just have to wonder about some things until the information is offered to us. Underneath the laugh and the smile could be a woman that's hurting because of the journey they are on.Takeaways That You'll Learn From This Episode:My fertility journey and undergoing several rounds of medication which took an emotional and mental toll on me. The idea of mothers day wasn't appealing till I got my daughter.Never ask someone when they will have kids. Although the question may seem harmless to you, you do not know what they are going through. With mothers day around, we need to be cognizant about those who are unable to celebrate. When you ask a woman who already has their first child when they will add another one, your inquiry might be a painful reminder of what they are struggling with or unable to do. It could even be a danger to their health.Everyone's journey and experience are different, and not everyone gets to enjoy motherhood. One in five women struggle to get pregnant within the first year of trying, and you're not alone in this process.Listen more than you speak. Be supportive and offer fewer suggestions. Be a reminder of their joy, not of the pain.Offer grace and space for that woman to feel however she feels when it comes to mothers day. Don't force her to put on a happy face, don't try to force her to appreciate what she has. She's pretty aware of that. Let her be because those feelings are valid. To connect with meLinkedIn-https://www.linkedin.com/in/lakeishaaentsuahInstagram-https://www.instagram.com/l.entsuah/Tune in, like, and leave a reviewApple Listennotes

In today's episode, our guest Anne Anyia shares how to keep your gut healthy by introducing a genuine lifestyle of healthy eating and living! Anne is a registered Nutritionist & Certified Health Coach. She is passionate about helping women and men transform their weight, health and life by focusing on nutrition, coaching, fitness and gut health!Live Well Tip of the Week: Don't let your emotions ruin your health!A Quote from Our Guest: “All health and disease begins in your gut! Everything you eat affects your body and is digested by the gut. The gut is the center of everything!” ~ Anne Anyia6 Takeaways That You'll Learn From This Episode: Your gut begins from your mouth and ends at the anus. The gut is the center of your health and it works to digest and absorb everything you eat. Our gut health really includes our entire digestive system! Everything starts in your gut!Anne discusses how the state of your gut also affects your mental health! This includes stress, anxiety, and even depression! Stress can shut down your gut. Yo- Yo dieting is when you jump from one diet to the next in order to lose weight. This may cause you to hate food instead of seeing food for what it really is. Jumping from diet to diet and eating processed or sugary foods can also negatively impact your gut health. A genuine lifestyle change will help you on your weightloss journey. The number on the scale is not a true reflection of your weight loss journey! If the number on the scale hasn't changed yet, this doesn't mean that the healthy changes you are making are not positively affecting your gut health! Non-scale victories are better! If your clothes fit you better, if you have better energy, if you're less bloated, then these are more important victories! Anne also discusses the benefits of prebiotics and having a healthy diet before depending on supplements! The more natural and holistic your diet is, the better it is for your gut health! Some holistic and natural options to maintain in your diet include drinking plenty of water, vegetables, some fruits, lentils, chickpeas, nuts, fish & salmon, avocados, dark chocolate 90%, and things that are rich in fiber, which also assist in good bacteria. In addition to incorporating a more natural diet, make sure to find an exercise you enjoy and be consistent with it! Connect with Anne Anyia:InstagramWebsiteFacebook

Have you ever considered a more holistic approach to learning the needs of your body? In today's episode we learn how a naturopathic doctor blends science with natural therapies, to look at patients through a holistic lens. Our guest, Dr. Steffe teaches us the importance of getting to the root of why you may be feeling unwell. She has a deep passion for teaching all women how to understand our bodies on a deeper level. We also discover the connection between our hormones and menstrual cycles as it relates to our overall health. Stay tuned for an episode you won't want to miss! Live Well Tip of the Week: Take the time to learn your body! It's important to ask yourself how well do you really know your body? Can you pinpoint why you may be experiencing a headache, upset stomach, or why you just aren't feeling the best? These are all reasons why it is important to learn & know your body from a deeper level. A Quote from Our Guest: “A naturopathic doctor is a doctor who looks at the root cause of why you aren't feeling well, instead of offering medications that hide the symptoms.” ~ Dr. Steffe8 Key Takeaways You'll Learn From This Episode: A naturopathic doctor is a doctor who looks at the root cause of why you aren't feeling well, instead of offering medications that hide symptoms. They typically use natural therapies and modern science with little to no pharmaceuticals. Herbal medicine is typically prescribed. It's important to look at hormonal imbalance from a holistic viewpoint because it helps you to pinpoint the root cause of what is happening within your body, and helps you to make the necessary changes to truly get better. A naturopath provides testing to get to the root issue. Then, they will look at natural approaches in order to make the necessary adjustments. These approaches may include observing your dietary habits and even your stress levels. Having both a medical doctor and a naturopath doctor can be very essential because they both can play critical roles in helping you discover what your body needs. PCOS symptoms typically include irregular periods or showing signs of having high testosterone. Symptoms of high testosterone include darker, coarser hair in areas where women typically don't. Also cystic acne. PCOS can be commonly misdiagnosed by medical doctors. You also don't have to have cysts on your ovaries to experience PCOS. Some traditional medical treatments (from a medical doctor) may include placing a patient on birth control to help them have regular periods. This does not fix the problem. This is actually hiding what is truly going on. Another commonly prescribed treatment is Metformin. With PCOS, the root cause is typically insulin resistance. Meaning your insulin and blood sugar may be high. It's important to ask your doctor for blood work and to get imaging done (ex: an ultrasound). When you find a naturopathic doctor, you want to make sure they are certified. You can also look into making a virtual appointment with a naturopathic doctor. Be prepared to keep an open mind with your naturopathic doctor as they teach you new things that can benefit your body's health. In today's episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Jamice Holley. She is a licensed mental health counselor and licensed minister. Jamice teaches us how to approach healing and growth from a mental, emotional, & spiritual perspective in order to achieve impactful and lasting results! Through the discussion of this impactful conversation, you will learn how your spiritual life works together with your mental health, and how to reconcile mental health challenges through therapy and time spent with God.Live Well Tip of the Week: You have to find something to believe in that is greater than yourself. Acknowledge a greater power than yourself. The power that you can hold onto whether things are difficult in life or not. Make sure you're nurturing that belief! A Quote from Our Guest: “We are spirit beings first, so it's important to feed your spirit. Without feeding your spirit, you become unaligned with yourself.” ~Jamice Holley9 Things You'll Learn in This Episode: We are spirit beings first, so it's important to feed your spirit. Without feeding your spirit, you become unaligned with yourself. Just because you think a thought, doesn't mean it has to be true. Allow yourself to reflect on what God says about a particular subject matter.God doesn't allow things to happen to you, it happens for you! God uses what we've gone through to help others and to bring him glory. There is purpose in what we go through!Prayer is a weapon but therapy is a strategy! Therapy allows you to build a reparative relationship with how you view the world and yourself. God can use both prayer and therapy to help shift your mindset. We also must do the work to better ourselves! Prayer without works is dead. Step one is to take care of yourself. Take care of the 5 pillars of yourself. Eating healthy, hydrating, reading a devotional, recharging your energy etc. Before seeking therapy, you should consider working on your physiological health care first, in order to assist with any physical imbalances that you may be experiencing. The goal is to go to therapy to get what you need, and then use the tools and strategies that you have learned in your day to day life! You want a therapist that you can get along with, but also one who is willing to help you become a better version of yourself, instead of just being your friend. If a particular therapist isn't working for you, let them know what's not working for you and what you feel may need to be adjusted in order to move forward. Make sure to voice your concern. Therapy is a safe place for you to be able to voice your opinions and your truths. We will also cover the importance of acknowledging your unique body type, despite the pressure of society to try and categorize one's diet into what everyone else is doing or saying that works for them!Live Well Tip of the Week: Food is not the enemy. Your mindset is!A Quote from Our Guest: “Understand that everyone doesn't have the same genetics. We shouldn't be pursuing to have the same ideal body as everyone else in order to fit the standard of popular belief.”~ Christyna Johnson 4 Things You'll Learn in This Episode: A nutritionist is an experienced professional, who is not required to have a degree or certification in order to become a nutritionist. They also do not have legal standing or legal protection behind their title. Whereas a registered dietitian is a credentialed individual with at least a bachelors degree in nutrition, and required to complete additional training and certifications. Intuitive eating is a form of self compassionate eating. This means eating in a way that is internally wise and compassionate towards your own dietary fulfillment and needs. This also means becoming rebellious towards the expectations and influences of outside sources where it concerns your personal dietary needs (outside of a medical professional). This includes rebelling against the ‘diet culture' or diets that are trending for everyone else. Example: You do not have to become gluten free just because it's the popular thing to do. You should only choose it if it works well for you. There are often financial challenges associated with intuitive eating, due to the expense of allowing yourself to consistently eat the foods that you desire to eat (that work best for your needs). In this situation, it is important to learn to become creative in how you approach your diet. Listen to yourself, be intune with yourself. Unhealthy food habits can be addressed by a proper dietitian. For those who are looking for financial assistance, there are often health grants and resource centers within your community that are available to provide financial assistance towards professional health services. The pandemic has caused many people to feel anxious about what will happen next. Sometimes, when we don't feel like we are in control, we become anxious. Everyone experiences anxiety at times. Facing a new challenge, environment, or social setting, are just a few of the many reasonable concerns for feeling a bit anxious. These concerns typically subside quickly. When someone experiences increased levels of anxiety, they will typically have difficulty calming down or releasing worry. Can you recall a particular trigger or experience that has caused you anxiety? Today we will dive into best practices for managing anxiety when levels are high or beginning to feel unmanageable. Live Well Tip of the Week: You don't have to go backwards if you don't want to. Sometimes going forward with a new routine, instead of revisiting an old routine, is the better route for you!A Quote from Our Guest: “It's okay to say no. It's also okay to remove yourself from an environment or situation that is causing you a lot of anxiety.” ~Vera Cheng6 Things You'll Learn in This Episode: Some physical signs of anxiety include muscle tension, difficulty focusing, difficulty controlling worries, insomnia, fatigue, & being on edge or easily irritated. Physical symptoms of anxiety can last longer than actual concerns exist. Deep breathing techniques are effective when feeling anxious. Practice deep breathing 3-4 times a day for about 5 minutes at a time. You may pinpoint anxiety in children by asking them how they are feeling in order to create open dialogue and safety for them to open up. Every kid is different. Not having interaction with friends can cause some anxiety. Physical symptoms of increased levels of anxiety include, wetting the bed, sleep issues, or any unordinary repetitive behavior. Don't rush into a large gathering if it feels too far outside of your comfort zone. Start small, by acknowledging your comfort level, and asking someone to meet you halfway by considering trying a one on one meeting or virtual zoom call. Don't be afraid to express your comfort level. Your boundaries are important! Saying yes all the time can lead to a higher chance of burnout and feeling resentful. You don't have to feel guilty about saying no! It's also okay to remove yourself from the situation. It may be hard at first, but the more you get used to saying no, the more people will respect your boundaries. If the person doesn't respect your boundaries, you have to evaluate if you really want that person in your life! Evaluate how long you've been feeling increased levels of anxiety or experiencing symptoms. If symptoms persists longer than a week, consider reaching out to a family doctor or therapist for an evaluation, in order to assess what options may be available to help you. And remember, therapy can be good for anyone to check in with yourself, even if you aren't experiencing anxiety!Connect with Vera: Website: https://www.talktherapywithvera.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/talktherapy.with.vera/Twitter: https://twitter.com/VeraCheng17

In today's podcast episode, our very own host shares why she takes issue with the term ‘Mom Goals'! Podcast Takeaways:Live Well Tip of the Week: Comparison is the enemy of alignment. You can not be fully present with your own life & experiences, if you're always comparing your life to someone else's. Social media hashtags such as #Mom Goals, can cause unnecessary pressure, emotional pain, and mental health issues for some mothers. The term ‘Mom goals', can cause us to strive for unrealistic goals. Someone else's mothering journey doesn't have to be your journey. We don't know the truth behind closed doors or the reality of someone's life behind a social media post. Social media only focuses on what can be seen publicly. Understand the difference between inspiration and comparison. Comparison interferes with our own intuition. It can cause you to question yourself and your own ability with raising your kids. Avoid comparison. Try to stay on the side of inspiration. Be realistic with what works for your family and your personal parenting needs. Remain in a place of humility even when receiving compliments on your parenting, so that you do not feel the need to keep up with a certain appearance of perfection. Afterall, parenting is not about meeting other people's expectations! Is there a particular hashtag that you see on social media that really gets under your skin? If so let us know! We may even use it as a topic for an upcoming episode!
