Remember the days when action figures ruled our imaginations and epic battles between good and evil played out in our living rooms? Step into 1987, when a beloved toy line and animated series leaped onto the big screen in a live-action spectacle. In this 80s flick a intergalactic battle spills from the fantastical world of Eternia into our own. Marketed as the “Star Wars of the 80s, it didn't quite live up to the hype. But today it is remembered as a cult classic that brought our favorite toy characters to life in a whole new way. So jump through the travel portal, grab the Power Sword and shout, 'I have the power!' as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts, Chris Adams (from "Retro Life 4 You Podcast"), Gerry D (from "Totally Rad Christmas Podcast"), and Laramy Wells (from "Moving Panels Podcast") discuss “Masters of the Universe” from 1987 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: The Throne Room set of Castle Grayskull was originally two large adjoining sound stages. The wall between the sets was knocked down to make one gigantic sound stage. At that time, this was the largest set Hollywood had seen in over 40 years. Production designer William Stout intentionally wanted the interior of Castle Grayskull to combine elements of both good and evil. In an online interview, Stout explained, "This was the seat of power for the entire universe. I reasoned that power is neither good nor bad; it's what you make of it and how you use it. Above floor level were what I called the Space Gods—giant bronze statues of those who had used the power based in that room for good. Below floor level was the dark side—demonic creatures that represented power used for bad or evil." Many reviewers compared the movie to the cartoon, but it was based on the toys. The toys initially portrayed He-Man as a barbarian in the first mini-comics, not as Prince Adam or Orko. Ed Pressman was interested in the property before the cartoon aired and purchased the movie rights for the Mattel characters, not from Filmation. On this episode we have a conversation with Byron's best friend, William Stout. This episode was recorded almost two years ago! It took a long time for me to get proper permissions from people and do some editing. A good bit of this interview had to be cut out, but hopefully we can revisit these conversations with Bill in the future.
In an alien-fantasy-desert-land, there is a well. The well has a lot of water in it, but two warlords and their constant fighting over it has prevented the poor villagers from getting to it. When a Holy Warrior shows up, he decides to help these villagers... Kind of. This is The Warrior and the Sorceress, released September 7th in 1984. We gave it a watch to see just how painful it is. The Council of the First Ones sits down with William Stout. The famous artist and film designer talks about his career and work on the Masters of the Universe 87 movie. He gives very insightful information on the making of the 87 movie and the process of an artist.
William Stout has been influencing the world’s imagination for years through his work as an illustrator, production designer, and in numerous other capacities. Before serving as production designer on such films as Arnold Schwarzenegger's “Conan the Barbarian,” Sylvester Stallone’s “First Blood” and “Return of the Living Dead,” Bill drew the posters for movies like “Rock n’ Roll High School” (starring the Ramones) and Monty Python’s “Life of Brian,” as well as inking the original logo for Rhino Records. Eventually Bill helped Steven Speilberg storyboard “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and his dinosaur illustrations influenced Michael Crichton in writing Jurassic Park (as Crichton acknowledges at the end of the novel). Bill also helped design the creatures for Guillermo del Toro’s film “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Bill continues to push the boundaries of visual design in his many books about dinosaurs, fantastic world, and "Legends of the Blues".

Dragon Con is over and I may only have one podcast to show for it! Due to many different factors – one of which was me neglecting to turn on my digital recorder – I only recorded one panel. But that's okay because it was a great one! I felt very fortunate to once again be at the table with the wonderful and talented William Stout, this time for a discussion of Conan the Destroyer. Listen in as Tegan and Gary from RevCast and I talk with Mr. Stout about his work on all of the Conan-centric films! “Procrastibate” by LeSexoflex.com “Conan the Barbarian Theme” by Basil Poledouris
By the Power of the American Sci-Fi Classics Track… I HAVE THE POWER! Fabulous powers were revealed to me when I held aloft my mic and started running my mouth about dork shit. Seriously – that’s how I got the panel gig. I’ve told the story before here on Needless Things, but after working with the fantastic American Sci-Fi Classics crew (and publicly referring to them as “fantastic” many, many times) last year at Dragon Con I was invited to more panels this year. And my casual aside mentioning how much I’d like to run a toy panel at Dragon Con was taken seriously. I basically got an e-mail a few months ago that said, “Here’s your toy panel and a list of others you might want to participate in. Oh, and you should probably just run this Masters of the Universe panel, too.” Mrs. Troublemaker has said I’m pretty much insufferable since then. The first thing I did was ask if I could bring my Needless Things Podcast co-host Mr. Beau Brown. I know Masters well enough to on for an hour (or more), but it’s Beau’s franchise. Masters of the Universe is his thing. I knew he would not only have all of the facts, but would probably be thrilled to have an opportunity to talk about He-Man at Dragon Con. Then I got the other essage asking if we should have William Stout on the panel. Oh, fuck. I know people – myself included – use this term all the time; but shit just got real. Just meeting the man behind the one thing about the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie that is unassailable – the production design – would have been hugely exciting. But Beau and I were going to get to be on a panel with him. To just chit chat about Masters. The mind boggles. Boggle no more, because here for your listening pleasure is Masters of the Universe: 30 Years of the Power LIVE from Dragon Con in its entirety. “Procrastibate” by LeSexoflex.com “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Theme” by Shuki Levy (I think)Remember - you can download the Needless Things Podcast from iTunes and listen in on Stitcher! -Phantom

William Stout is best known for his dinosaur paintings. But he also worked in radio, did the storyboards for Thriller, and Raiders of the Lost Ark and deisgned the characters for Pan's Labrynth. But he got his start drawing portraits and Disneyland. This is a story of those humble beginnings.
My very favorite horror film of all time is Return Of The Living Dead. The film takes horror and humor and takes the viewer on a ride seldom found in any other movie. Also all the cast members come together and each piece fits like a jigsaw puzzle. I was lucky enough to talk with several members of the cast and crew over the past couple of months for this very special podcast. Linnea Quigley and Beverly Randloph were guests at the Scarefest in Lexington Ky last month. I interviewed them that weekend. The rest of the interviews with producition designer William Stout, Brian Peck, Alan Trautman and John Philbin were done at Frank N Con in El Paso TX. While at this convention I also spoke with Dianah Cancer who is the lead singer of 45 Grave. Their song Do You Want To Party from the film has became the rock and roll horror anthem. This show also features Mike Perez who was involved with the new More Brains documentary on Return Of The Living Dead. Please join me as I talk with the stars from this amazing movie!!
