Class, we talk about AI a lot here. Is it good or bad? Well, it's technology, so it is neither and both depending on the user. But what if we could consider it as *more* than a tool, and far less than a replacement for a teacher? Britni Walz, Instructional Services and Technology Director for CESA4, like Dr. Tim, views proper AI as an assistant. Today, Britni joins us to discuss the exciting work CESA4 is doing to bring AI to rural school districts in Wisconsin. These schools seek ways to engage each of their students according to their needs and interest. As any educated educator knows, that's a monumental task. Well, what if we pair teachers with an assistant who can build individualized lesson plans for each child based on that student's needs and interests? That might just work! As we discuss AI in classrooms more, we need to understand a few things. The first and most important is that AI is ultimately a tool, not a replacement for human engagement. AI grows more capable and nuanced each day, but it's still a tool. Rather than fearing that AI will replace teachers let's consider the second thing. Utilizing AI as an assistant has the potential to reinvigorate teachers facing creative burnout and to engage so many students who tune out of lessons that don't interest them! One of the ways this Trump administration is different from the last is, relatively at least, how much more unconstitutional, how much more organized and comprehensive the attacks on our institutions, particularly the scaffolding we built for ourselves the most precious parts of of our societies: immigration, agriculture, the VA, NIH, the CDC, the NSF and humanitarian work around the globe.Do some of these need reform? Of course, they do. Is this the way to do it? No, it is not. These institutions, the ones we built over the last century that, again, however imperfect, baseline keep us fed and safe and on the other hand, help advance remarkable scientific progress. They're at more risk than ever. Every single day. To combat this onslaught, we need groups who are actually prepared to fight back. My guest today is Dr. Gretchen Goldman. Empowering the MSP Community: MSP Seminar for Growth, MSPAA TEBO Event “I always like to say that in order for an MSP to really be successful with regards to cybersecurity or specifically with cybersecurity is it has to be internalized before it can really be evangelized,” says Chris Johnson Sr. Director of Cybersecurity Compliance Programs at CompTIA. Chris is the opening keynote speaker at MSPAA's TEBO conference in Denver, October 9 and 10. “Pick something, start with something. You don't have to do it all at once.” Chris urges a step-by-step process of creating an internal cybersecurity culture, and then utilizing those gains with the clients. “The only way you can take on a whale client is one bite at a time.” Accordingly, the path to building a cybersecurity culture is done in achievable steps, and not all at once. In this podcast, Chris gives us a glimpse of what he will share with the MSPs.  “We're here for those members, for those MSPs that are just coming into the space, or maybe they've been there a long time, but they're suddenly feeling the need to tackle cybersecurity, whether it's through insurance requirements or clients asking for proof or evidence to support what they're doing.” Chris Johnson has a diverse work experience in the field of cybersecurity and technology. This webinar, held Jan. 24, 2024 was our fifth in the 2023-24 CSC statistics/stat rules webinar series. Generating consistent statistics and consistent stat reporting are essential duties of each athletic communications department. Presenters in this ice hockey webinar familiarized CSC members with a review of ice hockey rules - for both men and women's hockey - as they apply to statistics for 2023-24 and how to utilize proper scoring techniques to register accurate statistics. Please note: This was NOT a training session on "how-to" work with Genius/NCAA Live Stats or Presto stats; rather, it was held to give athletic communicators and statisticians a basic understanding of the rules of the games and an understanding on how to score ice hockey plays and staff contests. The discussion focused on: • best practices for pregame preparation for statistics, setting up stat personnel and job duties of that personnel, and how to effectively work with your opponent SID; setting up rosters, line charts (NCAA only); in-game statistical how-to's; post-game reporting; working with your opponents' athletic communications sport contact(s) • the use of proper in-game scoring techniques to register accurate statistics, including: entering starters; what sources to use if unsure about a play; recording basic statistics • a review of stat definitions (icing, offsides, shots vs. shots on goal, assists, power plays, penalty types) • discussion of difficult/unusual plays, ways to troubleshoot them and the way to accurate stat them during the game • using assist trackers (use an extra person or use the video stream if you didn't see it live) • wrapping up the game - what are the best practices in checking final stats and working with your fellow SIDs post-match Panelists • Elisa Mitton – University of Windsor Sports Information Coordinator & Home Event Manager • Tim Volkmann – Rochester Institute of Technology Director of Athletic Communications • Earl Zukerman – McGill University Communications Officer • Moderator: Jenna Jorgensen, Stillwater (Minn.) Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor. This is episode 628 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Alan Gayton is a 51-year-old IT geek who has been playing with computers since he was a kid stealing software on a Commodore 64. He started his career as the first Technology Specialist for Gordon County Schools, where he had the dubious honor of fixing the computers and switches that always broke down. He then became an Instructional Technology Specialist, where he had to deal with endless questions such as “What does ‘click here' mean?” He is now the Director of Technology for the North Georgia RESA, where he has the daunting task of managing the technology needs and issues of the RESA and its 5-member school districts. When he is not glued to his screen or phone, Alan likes to pretend that he is a pitmaster and a martial arts expert. He competes in competition BBQ as one half of team Q-Inator!, which is a clever name that he came up with after watching too much Phineas and Ferb. He and his partner have won some trophies and ribbons in various categories, but they are still far from being the best of the best. Alan also practices karate, which he learned from watching Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He has a black belt, which he bought online (or maybe earned at UKS Karate), and he likes to show off his moves to anyone who will watch. Alan is always willing to help or teach someone something new, as long as they don't ask too many questions or challenge his authority. He is a proud father of two children who are smarter and more talented than him, and a loyal husband to his wife who puts up with his antics. He lives in Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoys the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Alan's Brunswick Stew Recipe MEAT: ½ lb smoked pork ½ lb smoked beef ½ lb smoked chicken OR 1 can Castleberry BBQ Pork 1 can Castleberry BBQ Beef ! lrg can Chunk Chicken 2 cans cream corn 2 cans petite diced tomatoes 1 bottle Chili sauce ¼ cup favorite bbq sauce (more or less to taste) Hot sauce to taste Salt and pepper to taste   Mix all in crock pot and cook on high for around 4 hours or on low for around 8.   A few notes: Meat To get it to turn out more like mine, you will need to use smoked meat and run it through a grinder with a large-holed plate. It will still be great if you don't, but it does give it that more authentic texture Home smoked meat is best, but you can also get it from a local bbq restaurant If you decide to use canned, it is getting hard to find the Castleberry's products in stores (particularly the beef) but you can probably use other brands or shop online. Feel free to add other veggies to make it how you like. Awesome conversation! Had so much fun! Enjoy it!   Before you go... Could you do me a favor?
