Well, we're on our way to Adelaide and it looks like we've officially morphed into being the same person, head to toe. Guess that's Tour life! First up, what's the emoji you wish existed? Revz' is a bit rogue and Gem is perplexed by what's on the menu. But where's the damn sausage? Then we get so into what Gem doesn't have time for that we don't have time for much else. A global uuuincident sparked the Mother Cogs in Gem's noggin about telling your kids the truth about things while also keeping it age appropriate and protecting their innocence. A tricky and curly tightrope to walk and we fumble our way through it together. Thanks for being here DLs! This episode is proudly sponsored by Chefgood. Pastors Chad and Josh discuss the most recent message from our Summer Teaching Series, "Summer Rules!". This teaching series covers the 10 Commandments God gave to his people to guide and bless them. In this part, Pastor Chad teaches on the 6th & 7th Commandments: Do Not Commit Adultery & Do Not Murder. In our conversation, we discuss how one of the things that unite these two commandments is that they both bring other people into our rebellion. There's hope, though! We see great Old Testament heroes like Abraham, Moses, and David who failed to keep these commands but were still a big part of God's redemption story. #TheBridge #church #hopeishere #JesusSaves #gather #connect #serve #ForThe931

Today on Crime & Entertainment we travel across the pond to talk with one of London's biggest Drug Smugglers Michael Emmett. Growing up, Michael wanted nothing more than to follow in his dad's footsteps and join the family business. Aged 18, he did just that and entered into the glamourous, dangerous world of organized crime. Michael's father, a career criminal and contemporary of the infamous Kray brothers, was a wayward role model. Soon Michael's criminal activities were funding a reckless lifestyle of drugs, sex, and violence. However, the high couldn't last. In 1993 both men were arrested for their involvement in a £13-million smuggling operation. Michael was sentenced to twelve years, serving time in the same prison as his dad. Inside HMP Exeter, Michael found something he had never expected: answers. A chance encounter in the prison chapel led to an experience that would shake the foundations of his life. This is a true story of trauma and transformation, one man's search for redemption, and the struggle to become the father he never had. In this, the final episode of our Paul Verhoeven series, we're taking a deep dive into the director's final film made within the Hollywood system before retreating to his native Netherlands. In discussions of HOLLOW MAN, most reviewers — and even Verhoeven himself — are dismissive of the film. But that unfairly discounts the incredible and innovative work that went into bringing its special effects alive. Despite what one might think of the film, its FX work deserves to be recognized. In this episode we'll discuss how the team of Sony Imageworks and Tippett Studios pulled it off, and we'll get into Verhoeven's own thoughts on the film. Then we pose the question: Is HOLLOW MAN deserving of its reputation as a failure, or did Verhoeven have more to say than most critics caught onto when it was released in 2000? How does the film play in the era of #MeToo? All of this and more in the conclusion to our series Sex + Violence: The Films of Paul Verhoeven! After the massive failure of SHOWGIRLS, Paul Verhoeven decided that, for his next film, he'd return to the tried and true genre of science fiction. In doing so, he retimed with ROBOCOP scribe Ed Neumeier for an adaptation of a decades old novel by legendary sci-fi author Robert Heinlein. The resulting film, STARSHIP TROOPERS, is a departure from its source material in both plot and theme. Although it has since come to be regarded as one of Verhoeven's best films, at the time of its release, it was reviled by critics and ignored by audiences. In this episode, we trace the film from its origins as a novel, through its subsequent adaptation and release, and its newfound cult status. After his third major success with BASIC INSTINCT, Paul Verhoeven had the Hollywood clout to do something truly audacious for his next film: He was going to direct a film that he wouldn't have to cut down to get an R-rating, something he'd struggled with on all of his American productions so far. The resulting film is the infamous SHOWGIRLS. Hailed as one of the worst films of all time when it was released in 1995, SHOWGIRLS has gone on to be re-evaluated. Over the last quarter century, it's evolved from pariah to camp classic to, in recent years, being seen as a misunderstood film, one that's much better than its reputation would indicate. In this episode, we'll explore the creation of the film itself, from an idea scribbled on a napkin by writer Joe Ezsterhas, through its production, release, and critical evaluation, all the way through its more recent resurgence. With a couple of highly successful, big budget, sci-fi action movies under his belt, Paul Verhoeven was ready to move on to a smaller project, one that was more centered on character and dialogue than his previous American productions allowed. The resulting film was BASIC INSTINCT, a Hitchcockian thriller that allowed the director to indulge in the explicit sexuality (and violence) of his earlier European films. In this episode, we trace the film's creation, from its script by Joe Ezsterhas (which sold for a record breaking amount) to its filming and release and, of course, the considerable controversy that it generated. With the release of ROBOCOP, Paul Verhoeven had been catapulted onto the A-list. With that film's success, it was inevitable that some of Hollywood's biggest names would come calling. And in the late 1980s, there were arguably no bigger stars that Arnold Schwarzenegger. After seeing ROBOCOP, Schwarzenegger personally tapped Verhoeven to be the director of his next project, the long-gestating Philip K. Dick adaptation TOTAL RECALL. But that film's development didn't begin there; the story of its creation began a decade and a half earlier, as project by the young screenwriter duo of Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett, who worked on the project alongside another screenplay, one that would later become Ridley Scott's ALIEN. In this episode, we'll trace TOTAL RECALL's creation, beginning in the mid-70s, all the way through its filming, release, legacy and the multiple attempts to bring a sequel to life. After the box office failure of FLESH + BLOOD, Paul Verhoeven sought to fully immerse himself in American culture in a bid to fully understand how to make films for the American market, so he packed his bags, left his native country and moved to America. Not long after arriving, he had an opportunity to direct a big budget American action movie for Orion Pictures. That film, ROBOCOP, would not only announce him as a major force to be reckoned with in American cinema, but it created a cultural milestone, whose presence is still felt today. In this episode, we'll discuss the creation of the film, from the inspiration behind the script by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, through Verhoeven's attachment, the film's production, and its ongoing legacy. For our latest series, we'll be diving into the career of Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. Known for his subversive and satirical work, Verhoeven has courted controversy throughout his filmmaking career — dating back to the late 1960s — mostly due to his unflinching depictions of sexuality and graphic violence. We're starting things out with a look at his first English language film, the 1985 American co-production FLESH + BLOOD, starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh. For the first third of this episode, we're going to give you a bit of background on Verhoeven's life and career up until this point, including brief discussions of his hard-to-find (in the US, at least) Dutch films before diving into the creation of FLESH + BLOOD. An evil trend has emerged among vivisectors that includes murder, rape and molestation. Is it somehow connected to vivisectors' cruel and abusive tests on animals? Or merely coincidence? PETA research has found 17 examples of vivisectors involved in serious violent crime against people. Kathy Guillermo, PETA's Sr. VP of Laboratory Investigations says the findings warrant the need for psychological tests on the vivisectors before they are given the millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded research grants. Go to PETA.org and see the "Sex, Violence, Vivisection" The PETA Podcast PETA, the world's largest animal rights organization, is 6.5 million strong and growing. This is the place to find out why. Hear from insiders, thought leaders, activists, investigators, politicians, and others why animals need more than kindness—they have the right not to be abused or exploited in any way. If anyone walked up to you and said that you had to leave a successful career behind, move to a foreign country, get famous from working out, find your way into modeling & movies all the while navigating some semblance of a love life in one of the most aggressive cities in the world? Our creation story is based on rape and violence. The story of Adam and Eve is much more than we learned in Sunday school. Widening our perspective on this powerful social story changes everything: the way we see marriage, the law, what it means to be a citizen, how we talk about sex and abuse, and how we consider healing. In this episode of In Times Like These, New Testament scholar Dr. Celene Lillie helps us understand her original research on the story of Eve—and what her rape, in early Christian literature, means for us today. Until we begin to learn and unlearn this story, we are doomed to remain caught in patterns of violence and misunderstanding.

Editor s note this episode contains accounts of sexual assault. On this week s show, we take a look at sexual harassment and abuse in the restaurant industry. We speak with service industry leader Tyler Chauvin, who has confronted sexual harassment directly over the course of her career. Now the general manager at Tr o in New Orleans, Tyler has become an unapologetic voice for change, advocating the need to challenge industry norms. Then, we hear from Brett Anderson of The Times Picayune and NOLA.com who made national headlines with his expos on the culture of sexual misconduct in the Besh Restaurant Group. Brett describes his investigation, which encompassed conversations with dozens of women who went on record with allegations of widespread sexual abuse in restaurants throughout New Orleans. Long before the MeToo movement became mainstream, organizations across the world have been working to confront the endemic problem of sexual abuse. We hear a presentation from one such group, Alteristic. In 2017, Alteristic s Kristen Parks hosted a seminar at Tales of the Cocktail that focused on strategies to prevent sexual violence in restaurants, bars, and beyond. And we conclude with a follow up conversation with Tyler Chauvin. She provides some insight into how service industry professionals and customers alike can act as allies to prevent abuse in restaurants and bars. Insects are the most abundant and enduring multi-cellular life form ever to have evolved. They are fast breeding, highly evolvable and, thanks to their body-plan, are future-proofed like no other animal. There are 40 tonnes of insects for every human being alive and they account for well over half of all known species. They are an essential component of global food chains and without them as pollinators, predators and recyclers, the world would be a very different place. As model organisms in research, insects have greatly helped our understanding of genetics, physiology and behaviour. But they have a dark side - they have changed the short course of human history by killing hundreds of millions of people and destroying their crops.
