Horror Shorts are often the heartbeat of horror film festivals. They are frequently overlooked by audiences, but not at this year's Overlook Film Festival. Each session was full of horror fans, which was great. Listen in to these emerging directors and writers for insight into how to make festival-worthy films.
Don't call them capris. They sure ain't pedal pushers. They are shorts! Horror Shorts, to be exact, and Cinescare talked about a whole lot of them. These quick little gems pack the same punch as any feature-length film and are certainly worth your time. Next time you have a few minutes (literally), check out some of these treasures.

In this episode, one of the biggest segments is really spooky, and really fun, 2 Sentence Horror Stories. And we point out "next week, we will talk about this or that...." That will be saved for the episode after.

Today I am honored to be joined by director David F. Sandberg, known for major studio films like Shazam, Annabelle: Creation, and Lights out, as well as his no budget horror short films which he’s been releasing for years under his YouTube channel ponysmasher. David is about as great a guest as I can imagine on this show. His story is a case in point for making your own films and not waiting for permission - As we talk about throughout the interview, after years of working in documentary and animation, David decided to make some no budget short films with his wife Lotta. One of them in particular - Lights Out - was shot in just one day with no crew, and ended up going viral on YouTube. This attracted the attention of Hollywood and the rest is history. Throughout the interview we talk about David’s journey from no budget filmmaker to studio director, the biggest challenges he encountered along the way, advice for filmmakers who aspire to direct studio films, what makes someone a great director, and much more. On this episode of The First Run, Chris runs through all the films he saw at this year's Gasparilla Film Festival. First up is the dramatic tech thriller, ‘The Hummingbird Project', starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Salma Hayek. Eisenberg and Skarsgård are business partners trying to get the fastest possible speed for online trading and thereby making themselves filthy rich. Hayek is their former boss with her own designs. There's the always relatively fascinating rundown of the big Blu-Ray & DVD releases, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the Week. Then it's on to the Horror Shorts; ‘Latched', ‘Lullaby', and ‘Thread'. Next up is A24 Irish import, ‘The Whole In The Ground'. A young mom and her son move to the countryside and he disappears for a short time. Upon his return, something just isn't quite right… We're not done yet though as Taylor Schilling stars in, ‘Family'. Schilling is the no-nonsense Aunt who never has time for her family due to her dedication to her job. And she's a bit of a jerk. So how does the Insane Clown Posse save the day? Finally, the Japanese horror/comedy, ‘One Cut Of The Dead' closes out the show. A director is tasked with making a ‘one take' zombie show. But what happens when zombies actually show up? We know, we know...the co-hosts said that this episode was supposed to be about the new sci-fi horror, Life, but Minki couldn’t find it to download or stream and Tracy didn’t want to run through the movie alone...so, they’ll do it another time! Instead, they chose to watch two gruesome short horror films, one new and one a bit old yet forever memorable, both delving into the darker side of relationships. Practical SFX in both are downright solid, the first taking 8 hours to get a guy to look like he has no skin on him and the second...well, does the name Tom Savini ring a bell? Tracy, the usual horror short hater, really enjoyed both of these while Minki was a little more critical but overall pleased with the double feature. BONUS: they discuss their Friday night spent with the ladies from MY FAVORITE MURDER at the Warner Theatre in Washington DC. Minki tries to poke holes in Tracy’s fandom but this murderino ain’t having it. Karen and Georgia all day every day.

In this very special episode of First Films month, we explore five short films that either were expanded into horror features or earned their directors enough creed to get their own movie: “Panic Attack” Fede Alvarez “Mamá” Andrés Muschietti “Lights Out” David F. Sandberg “Saw” James Wan “The Monster” Jennifer Kent Apologies for the audio being swimmy this episode (and in the outro to follow). We had technical difficulties. Thanks for bearing with us for this super fun episode!

GREETINGS FRIENDS AND STRANGERS ALIKE! WELCOME TO EPISODE 15 OF THE CINEPUNX PODCAST!!! A few important program notes: 1. On this episode we consistently refer to the episode as “EPISODE 14” when clearly last episode was 14. Sorry but really why do you care anyway? Jerk. 2. Funny story, you see we did this all before. We set up and interviewed our good friend Matt Garrett, but the recording turned out to be unlistenable garbage. oops. We are not good at this sometimes. Hence why we are confused on this, our second try, as to what episode we are even recording. It is silly. 3. Matt Garrett is a local Philly film personality and old school punk! Matt has directed, written, produced and currently curates an amazingly interesting Horror short film program called Vivisections which occurs quarterly at the Philamoca! 4. You can see Matt’s short film, BEATING HEARTS, here!!! It is fucked up, but in a good way. 5. Thanks to everyone for listening and supporting us, to Matt for speaking to us, to our wives for putting up with our recording process which is painful and annoying!! Peace Out Yall!!! The post Episode 15: INTERVIEW WITH MATT GARRETT (DIRECTOR OF MORRIS COUNTY AND BEATING HEARTS AND PROGRAMMER OF THE VIVISECTIONS HORROR SHORTS SERIES) appeared first on Cinepunx.
