In the second part of our series on the drinks that shaped our journey in cider, it's Albert's turn to reveal the bottles that have most impacted him. Shockingly, three of them are Ross-on-Wye – though Albert didn't actually press the apples in any of them, though he helped bottle and shape the latter two. Even more shockingly however, two of the ciders aren't Ross-on-Wye's at all! In this episode we learn the bottle ‘that did it' for Albert and the two Ross-on-Wyes that shaped his cider making trajectory. Plus the British cidery that's most impacted him and a recent cider that inspired him to keep learning and evolving. Peggy Scott Laborde, a producer for public TV station WYES, was at the time a co-host and producer for WDSU TV Ch. 6's coverage from the fair. She has since done a documentary on the event, as well as a follow-up featuring some of the people involved with the event. She joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with producer Kelly Massicot, to recall the fair's many great memories as well as the hardships. The interview also looks into the future and at the possible great legacies from the fair still ahead.

Dennis Woltering had a long and distinguished career as the nightly news anchor on WWL tv, Ch. 4. Since retiring, he is still frequently in front of a camera and has lots of stories to tell. Acting as an independent producer, he has created documentaries of high-profile locals, including career healthcare pioneer Alton Ochsner and float builder Blaine Kern. (Both were shown on local public tv's WYES tv., Ch. 12. ) His very latest  effort (also on WYES) is “Louisiana Inventors and Innovators,” six profiles of imaginative locals who had big ideas and made them work. The documentary includes stories like drilling for deep water oil; a better way to peel shrimp and even selling lightweight vacuum cleaners. Woltering talks to Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde about his latest project. Producer Kelly Massicot handles the technical effort. Here's a listening tip: You will also hear how a steak got its sizzle.

Louisiana has a rich literary history. All authors conduct interviews as part of their craft, but only one wondered what it would be like to interview a vampire. As another Louisiana author, Kate Chopin, might have said about Anne Rice's vampire book, it was an awakening. Peggy Scott Laborde, a producer and documentary maker for public television station WYES tv in New Orleans joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot, to talk about her latest documentary, “Literary New Orleans.” The program opens the book on some of the best works from the Louisiana literary scene. We will also hear about why Tennessee Williams changed the name of the play he was working on from “The Poker Night” to “Streetcar named Desire.”

The results from Louisiana's general election are in and Republicans swept statewide offices. Politics reporter Molly Ryan breaks down the wins, losses and a somewhat surprising result in the Lafayette mayor-president race. New Orleans not only serves as the setting for many literary classics like “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “A Confederacy of Dunces,” but it has also long been home to many writers and thinkers who draw inspiration from the Crescent City.  A new WYES documentary explores the history of News Orleans as a literary mecca for more than 300 years and includes interviews with past greats like Tennessee Williams and Anne Rice, as well as modern writers including Walter Isaacson and Maurice Carlos Ruffin.  Senior producer and host of “Literary New Orleans,” Peggy Scott Laborde tells us how she brought this passion project to life. She's joined by the state's outgoing poet laureate featured in the film, Mona Lisa Saloy. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many are gearing up to reunite with family and friends for the annual meal. But not everyone has the resources to cook a feast or a place to go. Thankfully, there are plenty of opportunities to get a Thanksgiving meal and enjoy an evening of community throughout Louisiana, including the 49th annual Sheriff's Thanksgiving Day Celebration in New Orleans. Our managing producer Alana Schreiber spoke with Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson about this year's celebration, as well as other opportunities to get a free meal or volunteer throughout the state. It's New Orleans: Louisiana Eats

New Orleanians have always loved to cook and to share what they've made with others. So it makes sense that as soon as there was television, there was a Crescent City chef on the screen spreading the good news of New Orleans food. The first was an African American cooking star named Lena Richard, who made her TV debut on WDSU-TV in 1949. Fast forward to today, and it's tough to tune in to any cooking show and not see a familiar face. This week, three local chefs walk us through the fun and the frenzy of their television encounters. We begin with Mason Hereford of Turkey and the Wolf and Molly's Rise and Shine, who talks about his experience in the lauded Iron Chef competition as well as his popular appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. More recently, Mason took part in another media adventure and host Poppy Tooker went along for the ride. Next, chef and YouTube star Toya Boudy explains the strategies she used when making her rounds on cooking competition shows. Toya talks about her life and mission, which she talks about in her first cookbook, Cooking for the Culture: Recipes and Stories from the Streets of New Orleans to the Table. Finally, Chef Kevin Belton tells of his journey from a child growing up in New Orleans to cooking show host on PBS affiliate WYES and WWL-TV. Peggy Scott Laborde is the Senior Producer at WYES TV. Many locals know Peggy as the producer of numerous beloved WYES documentaries about New Orleans’ past. Peggy’s latest documentary, New Orleans: The First 300 Years, debuted in November 2017. While she continues to be busy putting together her next documentary, Peggy and other producers are working on a WYES project called “Tricentennial Moments”. Tricentennial Moments are short, educational videos that focus on various aspects of New Orleans’ 300-year history. In this podcast, Peggy explains that this collection of videos is a multi-platform project; the videos are broadcast on WYES TV and are also available for viewing online. As part of the project, many New Orleans historic sites and buildings display signage that features QR codes. Visitors and locals can use their smartphones to scan the codes to see and hear the Tricentennial Moments associated with specific historic sites. To produce the Tricentennial Moments, WYES collaborated with two generous, cornerstone sponsors: The Historic New Orleans Collection and The Meraux Foundation, while The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation sponsored the signage.
