When someone doesn't believe you've changed, how does it make you feel? Do you want to prove to them that you have? What if it doesn't matter? Your past is held in their emotional memories. Our memories are tied to our emotions According to a study published in Nature Neuroscience(2016), when we experience an emotion, our amygdala is stimulated and adrenaline is released into our bodies. These processes activate the hippocampus which is responsible for memory function, sharpening our memories during that moment. How we process how the other made us feel is unique to the individual which determines how memories are formed. Although my husband and I share a past, it exists as two parallel paths, creating separate memories as it moves forward with a different lens and context. I will remember how he made me feel and he will remember how I made him feel.

Once you start learning, growing and healing through estrangement from an adult child, you might feel like sharing new insights with your child. Why wouldn’t s/he be interested in hearing what you’ve learned? And how exciting, to have new knowledge that can create a positive impact in your relationship. That’s why many parents ask, “How do I let my estranged adult child know I’ve changed, if we’re not currently in contact?” Tina’s answer is, “Don’t be in a hurry to do that.” Find out why you might want to wait on writing them a note about the work you've been doing, and what to do instead. When people tell you, "you've changed", it means you're on the right track. Let's talk about it....
Muneeba Khan, Islamic practitioner and member of At-Tawheed Islamic Center, previously asked Grand Rapids faith communities: "Has there been any aspect of your faith that you've changed your perspective on over this pandemic time?" --- Rev. Yong Su Mark Hepper, Mahayana Buddhist practitioner and Dharma Teacher at the Grand Rapids Buddhist Temple, responds, and passes a question on to other faith communities in the city: "What does your faith, your religion, do to specifically address your members' suffering?" --- Passing the Mic is a project of Grand Rapids Community Media Center (CMC) that promotes online, community-wide discussion of local issues and topics using the spoken word. Residents are invited to share one to three-minute audio responses to locally-focused questions from fellow neighbors, with questions geared toward all Grand Rapidians or specific communities within the city. This past year has been one to remember. It's disrupted lives and changed the world in many ways. Whether you have been cautious or fearless, scared or angry, the pandemic has changed you and the world. There's an interesting read at Fast Company about life during the pandemic and how life has been turbulent from one point of view. While I related to some of what the author wrote, I didn't relate to a lot of it. I also know I've been lucky, and relatively lightly affected by this pandemic. I've published, and needed, coping tips at times, but I've been able to live my life, get outside, still coach youth, still visit some restaurants and take some limited vacations. I've looked back periodically, recording how I feel about life. I've changed, and I've struggled, but I've also been able to do things and I didn't have the lockdown, and the limited life that some tech pros had, and I certainly didn't have the struggles with security and finances that many less privileged dealt with. For many boys and young men growing up, including myself, there was a struggle and hardship in being vulnerable and emotional within groups of male friends aka bro squads. This week I bring on my very good friend Edward Lynn, a nurse with many years of experience in healthcare as well as a mentor and coach for many young men, to discuss THIS STRUGGLE that we had with each other growing up as well as how we've matured and grown our perspective on it. If you are a woman maybe you are wondering what that mental block men have with each other are or if you are a man just wanting to find that safe place. Let's start the discussion of how we can create a space that embraces crucial conversation for men to communicate honestly and openly about their brokenness and FEELS without judgement.

If you're someone like me, you're constantly wanting to learn new things. But there is value in revisiting past works we've consumed, whether movies, books or even your personal journal entries. This is because as we change, so does our perspective and we can always get something new even if we've seen/read something plenty of times before. It's a good way to gauge the changes within ourselves and our thinking. So that's my challenge to you: to revisit past stuff. Lee returns for a second look at music from films inspired by "Alien" and "Aliens". While there are a billion of these rip-off films, Lee quickly discovered when attempting to source the music, most of these films just don't have available soundtracks/scores, and even the ones that do usually only come from sources of dubious quality. That equals a bit less music than usual, and more talking from Lee. Chelsea and Jachelle are back with The Good Place and there are only a few episodes left. We love confident Chidi and Timothy Olyphant. There are some references to the Witcher's famous "Toss a Coin" song. PS: Chelsea did listen to Gummi Bear after this and only lasted ten seconds before turning it off.
On our entertainment-themed Round 2 this week, The Good Place is back with "You've Changed, Man," which ends with yet another plan for the afterlife, as well as a jar full of marbleized Janets. There's also plenty of planning on West Wing's "The Last Hurrah," as Arnie (or was it Ernie?) Vinick ponders his next move and the incoming Santos administration aims to fill its cabinet posts. Mentioned: Becoming by Michelle Obama [https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Michelle-Obama/dp/1524763136]. Next week: "Mondays, Am I Right?" on The Good Place and "Institutional Memory" on The West Wing.
On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2, Catherine saw Star Wars: The Newest One and shares her thoughts. Then, she and Terri discuss West Wing's "Transition." We're nearing the end of the series, but these last eps are a joy to watch. (We're ahead of the West Wing Weekly podcast for now, since we were anxious to continue watching.) Next week, it's "The Last Hurrah" on West Wing, and hurrah! The Good Place is back, with an episode called "You've Changed, Man."

Strive to Change; Don't Let Them Say Otherwise! When someone utters to you, “You've changed…” Would that make you feel good? Or bad? It should make you feel good. The only change we want is for the better. We should avoid staying put or going backwards. Nothing's wrong with chasing greatness, success, and happiness. And, it's CHANGE that will get you there. If you've changed and improved or even thinking of starting to, then good for you! Start tuning in to hear Rob discuss more on how positive any change can be in this episode of The Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast. KEY TAKEAWAYS Remember where you came from. Yes. But this doesn't mean you should be stuck where you were 5, 10, or any years ago. Changing and expanding your environment is good. Don't even let others dictate where you should be. When people see something as a ‘truth', they'll go the extra mile to convince you or even force you with it. it will always be based on the perception of who they want you to be! If you got no problem with your goals, your vision, your principles, and everything else that makes up who you are and who you'll be, then you're good to go! BEST MOMENTS “Be careful to not let people hold you back.” “Money doesn't change you; money just makes you of who you're already are.” “If you're green, you grow. Richard and Adam are joined by Professor David Lepofsky, a visiting professor at Osgoode Hall Law School as they discuss the differences between law school in the 70's/80's and today. David talks about his unique experience as a blind law student in the low-tech law schools of the past. Richard discusses how laptops have changed the law school class dynamic. Adam promises that he really does read for class. Finally, David lets us know that there has never been a better time for law students to do amazing things in their time at law school. When somebody says "you've changed" and they often say it in a tone like there's something wrong with you. Being told this is actually great, because it generally means that you've broken out of a negative pattern and grown in yourself. When you change, it shows up other people as not changing, which they won't like, so they automatically put you down. Being told you've changed is a celebration !
