Will Santa Fe Lose Its Art Walk? Plus, Downtown Protesters Attacked and a Kendrick Lamar Sighting

Is the Art District on Santa Fe's First Friday summer art walk event in danger of going away? Concerns over crowd sizes at this annual block party has the city hesitant to issue needed permits, leaving the popular event in limbo. Then, a group of women on their way to a protest last weekend were accosted downtown by two men in a truck, and told Westword they didn't feel like law enforcement took the incident seriously. Host Bree Davies is joined by returning faves Hey Denver newsletter editor Adrian González and politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval to dig into these stories, plus the King Soopers picket lines' impact on Girl Scout cookie sales, Kendrick Lamar's Denver rec center appearance, and more wins and fails of the week.  Justine talked about the City of Denver's Black History Month public art tour. Adrian discussed United Airlines' new flight training center and Osaka Ramen's impending closure. Bree mentioned the Denver Coliseum being used as a temporary shelter and the children who froze to death in Detroit. Get your tickets to HEYDAY now! His artistic styles range from modern/neo contemporary expressionism to street art, to traditional Mexican pyrography folk art. . . Perez initially made his introductory public appearance as an independent artist in 2009, by curating and promoting his first solo exhibit titled "Only in Dreams". Since then, Perez has remained an active supporter of the South Texas art scene, he has participated in numerous group exhibits internationally, nationally and throughout the state of Texas; including, three gallery level solo art exhibits titled "Alas De Mis Angeles" (2011), "Illicit Visions" (2013) and "LACONISM" (2016). . . In 2017 several of Perez' artworks were recognized by District 40, state of Texas Representative Terry Canales, and are currently exhibited in The Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas. In 2023 one of Perez' paintings titled "Shinaai" (brothers), a memorial homage to his late best friend Max Moreno (lead singer of Costello), was inducted to one of the oldest and largest Native American museums in the United States, the American Indian Center in Chicago, Illinois, for permanent display. . . Perez has been dubbed "The Patron Saint of Valley Art", has curated countless exhibits for many reputable visual artists and is a major socialite amongst the RGV's thriving art and entertainment scene. Cette Mixologie #29 leur est en quelque sorte dédicacée ! 1/ Lenna Willmark / Anders Jormin / album Pasado En Claro / The Woman Of The Long Ice / 5.40 2/ Zoé Besmond de Senneville / album Sourdre / Chaude Puis Froide / 1.50 3/ Naïssam Jalal / album Healing Rituals / Rituel des Collines / 4.30 4/ Suzanne / album Berthe / Her Place Near The River / 6.00 5/ Olga Amelchenko / album Slaying the Dream / Golden Tear / 5.50 6/ Senem Diyici / album Nara / Negire Çaw Rindamın / 4.15 7/ Julia Perminova / album Freedom / Dear Diary / 6.25 8/ Jane Ira Bloom / album Bloom/Helias/Previte 2.3.23 / Hawk Migration 4.45 9/ Nefertiti / album Frameless / Mysterium / 5.55 10/ Mette Henriette / album Drifting / Rue du Renard / 2.50 11/ Izo Fitzroy / album A Good Woman / Hope Divine / 4.35 12/ Olivia Belli / album Sonus Noctis / Valse / 2.20 13/ Leïla Martial / album Warm Canto / Warm Canto / 3.30

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 7, 2023 is: satiate • SAY-shee-ayt • verb Satiate is a formal word that means “to satisfy (something, such as a need or desire) fully.” // My curiosity about Nicole's Spring Fling costume, which she promised would be “corny,” was finally satiated when she arrived at the party dressed as an incredibly lifelike cob of corn, complete with tassels. See the entry > Examples: “Every time I near the end of dinner at Yangban Society, Katianna and John Hong's Art District restaurant, I experience the same dilemma. I'm happily satiated. ... I couldn't possibly eat another bite. The thought is actually painful. But for Katianna's cheesecake, I persevere.” — Jenn Harris, The Los Angeles Times, 21 Nov. 2022 Did you know? The time has come at last to share the “sad” history of satiate, by which we mean that the two words—sad and satiate—are etymologically connected, not that the details will have you reaching for the tissue box. Both satiate and sad are related to the Latin adjective satis, meaning “enough.” When we say our desire, thirst, curiosity, etc. has been satiated, we mean it has been fully satisfied (satisfy being another satis descendant)—in other words, we've had enough. Satiate and sate (believed to be an alteration and shortening of satiate) sometimes imply simple contentment, but often suggest that having enough has dulled interest or desire for more, as in “Years of globe-trotting satiated their interest in travel.” Sad, which in its earliest use could describe someone who was weary or tired of something, traces back to the Old English adjective sæd, meaning “sated,” and sæd shares an ancient root with Latin satis.

Alfonso Medina, Co-Founder and CEO of Madelon Group, joins us for episode 264 of Art of Construction.  Today roughly 4 billion people - about 55% of the world's population- lives in urban areas. By 2050 the urban population is set to grow to more than 6 billion. This exponentially increasing demand, makes the creation of enough dignified, well-designed, and affordable housing one of the biggest and most urgent problems on our planet. Madelon Group are productizing the real estate development model, so supply can finally meet demand and we can truly resolve the housing crisis in our cities. Originally trained as an architect, Alfonso graduated from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) with a Master in Design and Research. After having designed one of the first ground-up co-living buildings in the world, Alfonso co-founded Madelon to focus on the future of housing. Madelon Group is planning dozens of prefabricated development projects in Colorado and are planning a five-story, 40,000-square-foot building in the Art District on Santa Fe in Denver. They used to their own software to source the site of the development, a site that wasn't even listed for purchase.  Join Devon and Alfonso as they discuss the future of urban development, how Madelon Group's software works, why development and not just building and design must be productized, and what it will take to truly solve America's enormous need for new housing.

Located in the Art District of Santurce, Puerto Rico, Libros AC was an independent bookstore and remains a publishing house with a simple goal: to document the current and the now for future generations' viewing pleasure. It first opened its doors in 2012 as a publishing house, bookstore, café, bistro, bar, piano practice and live music venue. With a selection of Spanish and English books, Libros AC welcomed visitors with a friendly atmosphere and a good coffee. Owner Samuel Medina studied Natural Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico and began a doctorate in pharmacy before returning to San Juan. Some years before, he managed a literary magazine, Agentes Catalíticos, which led to him opening the Libros AC publishing house and eventually the bookshop with the same name. Samuel is a writer, book romantic and a community uplifter and we are very happy to have him as our guest today. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gotbooks/message
