When I was hired, the one owner told me I would get “$14 an hour plus cash tips.” Maybe I'm just fuckin stupid, but I didn't realize that that meant literally only the cash tips and I would not get paid any of the tips that people leave when they pay with a credit card. I asked her about credit card tips today and that's when she told me, very coldly, “Like I told you yesterday and the day you were hired, you get cash tips. We keep credit card tips.”Most of our payments are done with cards so I am missing out on a LOT of tips. I have never worked somewhere that I did not receive tip outs from credit card tips. TODAY'S QUESTION:Something has been really bothering me as my spouse and I try to plan our future. We're both looking toward early retirement and every single bit of advice I see for where to retire... just doesn't take into account being gay. At all. All the "retire here for the lowest taxes and best chance at a good life" advice points to states with awful track records about all queer stuff ever (looking at you, Florida-Alabama-Louisiana-Montana). My queer heart is so frustrated that I'm essentially ignored in this advice again and again (pretty standard in personal finance, I know) and I would just love your combined take on what to look for in a place to retire to that takes into account social safety nets and not literally trying to legislate my spouse and I out of existence. I guess I am feeling pretty disheartened about the idea that I have to retire to a state that's going to possibly harm my rate of return and make early retirement harder just because I am queer. Do I suck it up and move to Florida? Are those taxes worth it to support those broader social safety nets and so we just suck it up and pay those in the queer haven of upstate New York-and-or-Vermont?LIKE THIS SHOW AND WANT US TO KEEP DOING IT?Show your love by becoming a patron. At the same time, many of your posts have an anti-capitalist bent. How do you address this conflict? Mind you, I'm not pointing fingers here, because I'm in much the same situation—private equity overlords booted me out of a job, but my own capitalistic investments allowed me to walk away without any pain, so I don't know how to feel about that. A pat answer is to point towards ethical-investment funds, but while I was reading up on it, I ran across an article that mentioned Wells Fargo as one of the companies listed on some ethical index because they aren't in the sin or war industries. It turns out, as I scrolled back up, that the article was published before the Wells' fuck-the-customer practices came to light. I know that bosses don't like people who know their rights. But I swear I'm otherwise a good employee.  I'm finding myself in a smaller and smaller pool of places to seek employment because every time I try somewhere new it's the same toxic bullshit. I throw themed parties for special occasions. I like to bake, I like to go dancing with my friends, and I dress in a very feminine way. I don't want to sacrifice those parts of my personality because they make me who I am, but I have a hard time getting people to listen to me and respect my opinions. I'm about to graduate from law school and I've done some things that I am proud of! Like drafting COVID relief legislation, winning a case against a predatory lender as a student attorney, and implementing a federal grant for disabled workers. People still don't think of me as a serious person, or as someone worthy of their trust, time, or attention. My own dad wouldn't take my legal advice, and instead chose to pay $19.99 for an online consult with a sketchy website (which just confirmed what I already told him). There are examples of this from all parts of my life: my roommates don't seem to respect my boundaries when I ask, guys don't tend to see me as someone to settle down with, my mom constantly asks me if I'm “sure” about my life decisions. What am I missing? Is there something I'm doing wrong? How can I get people to respect me?LIKE THIS SHOW AND WANT US TO KEEP DOING IT?Show your love by becoming a patron. Today's Question:How do I stop feeling scared about money all the time? I'm objectively in a great financial situation. Despite that, every time I hit a new financial milestone, the goalpost just moves. It went from "I'll feel less worried about money with a 3-month emergency fund" to 6 months to 9 months to 12 months to 12 months assuming my expenses were higher than they currently are.  I feel like a dragon compulsively trying to build a pile of gold that will never be enough. I never feel comfortable. I never feel secure. I'm hyper aware that one medical emergency could drain that emergency fund and put me right back where I started.I know this is a privileged problem to have when so many people are in such bad financial situations, but it's a problem nonetheless. Since I've gotten my finances under control, I feel like I should be able to relax a little bit and leave things on autopilot and just... enjoy being alive and able to pay my rent? Today's QuestionI’m writing in hope of some advice, or probably just to get out of my own head and get an outsider’s perspective, because I’ve thought about this WAY too much.I’m in my thirties, and I moved to a Richer Country from a Poorer Country (all within Europe) a few years ago. I had some truly shit jobs for a while, but got incredibly lucky eventually, and landed in my current job in December of 2018. I work for a charity that aligns with my values very well. I have a good boss. I’m paid reasonably well---my salary circles around average for my job title in my city, though I could probably make 20% more in a bigger charity, with the experience I now have.Trouble is... I don’t really like my job? I’m an office manager/jack of all trades assistant, and I’m damn good at it, but I didn’t choose to do it out of a passion for filing invoices and fixing trivial IT problems. I chose it because I had a wide variety of skills that you don’t need a degree for (I have a degree, but it’s purely academic), and people like me are very appealing to small organizations that want one person to fill all the gaps. It was never going to be a long-term plan; I just wanted something that would pay rent while I found my feet in a new country. I don’t want to be solving other people’s petty problems ten years from now. Now that my two-year mark on the job is slowly approaching, I don’t know what to do. Moving to a different role in the same organization is not an option; we’re too small for that. Do I try to pursue a career in corporate/charity internal training (very appealing, no idea how to even start)? Do I try moving to a different job despite being comfortable, so my CV doesn’t look like I’m too stagnant? Do I stay and buckle down and write after hours to fulfill my dream of writing a novel? (How do I deal with the emotional fallout of never being able to publish that novel, which is very likely?) Do I just keep this job and wait until some kind of an opportunity presents itself? I appreciate that no one can solve this problem apart from me, and it’s seven kinds of immature to expect you’ll magically give me the golden answer based on a few paragraphs of summary. But it was kind of therapeutic to just write it out and know someone sympathetic will read it. Your blog has been consistently excellent at filling long social-distancing weekends, so thanks for that! Today's QuestionAm I the asshole for refusing to pay at a restaurant that was false advertising? So my girlfriend (her 27, me 28) wants to go to this fancy new restaurant in the city that she’s heard good things about. We get there and it seems like one of those hipster places but whatever, I’m hungry. I look at the menu and this place is crazy expensive---like every dish is more than $15-$20 and half the ingredients I’ve never heard of. I order the bison steak ($26) and my girlfriend orders some weird pasta, noki I think ($18). Very important, these were listed as ENTREES on the menu. Mind you, with drinks plus tip this is going to come out to over $60, which is already ridiculous for dinner for two people. So anyway we order as we are starving. My steak arrives and I am shocked, it’s like 6 small pieces of sliced steak with some weird sauce on the side and a small handful of salad. I joke to the waiter 'where’s the rest of my steak?' and he explains they serve smaller portions at this restaurant because they focus on getting the highest quality ingredients. I don’t care if this bison was blessed by the Pope himself! It’s absurd to charge that much for such a small bit of steak, it’s highway robbery. When I go to restaurants I expect an entree to fill me up and be enough for leftovers.I’m complaining to my girlfriend and she’s getting annoyed with me. Similar situation with her pasta, it was like maybe 12 pieces of noki dressed up with some frou frou bullshit.Granted, the food was pretty good but I cannot get over how tiny these portions are. I’m a big guy and I like to eat, what can I say? When the waiter comes back I inform him we will not be paying for our meal, and that they are falsely advertising entrees that barely qualify as a light snack. My girlfriend is begging me to stop but that’s where we’re different, I don’t let businesses push me around and rip me off.A manager comes and apologizes but asks us to leave. I don’t end up paying as they realized I called them out on their bullshit. My girlfriend is silent the entire time on the way back. I’m still hungry so I drive through McDonald’s and get a burger, and when I did that she asked to be dropped off at her place. It’s now the next day and I’m starting to think I didn’t handle the situation as well as I could have (I could have probably just asked for a discount). My girlfriend hasn’t responded to my texts so now I’m starting to think I’m an asshole. Am I the asshole?Like this show and want us to keep doing it?Show your love by becoming a patron. Like, what type of hidden costs or whatever are important to know about in regards to getting an apartment? How much money will I end up spending in the initial months of moving into an apartment? What type of things do you wish you knew before moving into your first apartment? Today's QuestionMy girlfriend and I are sort of fighting over money. When we first met, I had NOTHING. Like, sleeping-in-my-car nothing. But in the last three years my career miraculously rocketed into the stratosphere. I’m making SO MUCH MONEY. Meanwhile, her career has kind of plateaued. She’s working hard, but not getting ahead. Meanwhile I’m getting tired of winning. But the real issue is she’s made about how I spend my money. I don’t mean I waste it all. Nope, instead I’m making up for all the times friends helped me. Humble brag, but I’m ridiculously generous right now and I love it. I give friends gifts, pay for dinner, and tip big all the time. I’m sure this attitude will wear off eventually, but right now I’m just enjoying spoiling the people I love, INCLUDING MY GIRLFRIEND.But recently when her sister said she couldn’t afford a $300 class to finish getting her social work degree, I just gave her the money. I was happy to do it: it would improve her life, the money was nothing to me, and I’m sure she’ll pay it forward. But my girlfriend was PISSED and I don’t quite understand what I did wrong. Today's QuestionHi Bitches! You guys have been so helpful to me. I graduated last year with no student loans thanks to my parents, I got a job in that field with a pretty good salary for an entry level position, I’m contributing to my 401(k) and I'm close to paying off my credit cards. So that's fantastic! But as I'm looking at the near future of actually having a decent amount of money in the bank, emergency/retirement funds, living a bit more comfortably, I've started feeling really guilty. Most of my friends come from a less fortunate background than me, whose parents aren’t able to be as generous, and also haven't been as lucky with jobs. I feel like I have no business having money in the bank when people I care about are struggling. And then I feel ridiculous for complaining about a problem that boils down to "I have too much money."I’ve helped a couple of friends by covering a bill until they get their check, for example… but sometimes I overextend my budget by doing that, which obviously isn’t ideal. But I keep doing it because I feel awful that I have a safety net (with my parents) and they don’t!I want to help my friends, but I also want to be financially stable myself. As money-savvy folks who are also very aware of the state of the economy, have you had any similar feelings? He paid me back but since then has asked more than once. I have 5 figures saved so I feel pressured to help out, but I want him to actually learn some lessons instead of coming to me for a loan."And as a followup: how can I know what is financially expected as you get older? I'm self-employed (internet work with hard depression) but all my friends have adult jobs. Yet they also all still have student loans & credit card debt. I paid off my student loans, no credit card debt, have 25k saved and just bought a house thanks to my techie significant other. I still have a broke mentality since my significant other has 6 figures saved. It's hard to relate with my friends when there is such a mismatch of finances. Today's Question"My girlfriend and I are in our mid twenties, and have been seeing each other for four years now. We moved in together last spring and things have been going well. I love this girl. She's sweet, funny, interesting, pretty, and a little eccentric. She's absolutely my dream girl and I can't picture myself without her but we've been fighting for over a month and it's been hard."At the end of May we decided to get a dog together. We're both dog people, having grown up with them. Since my parents are close to a couple that breeds dogs, we've bought all three of our dogs from them. My girlfriend, on the other hand, had only one shelter pup"When we first started talking about raising a dog together I asked her the standard 'what kind of dog should we get?' questions about what breed she preferred. And she scoffed at me and said it didn't matter, because we would adopt a pet, not buy one. She said it like it was obvious and that I didn’t have a say otherwise. We got into an argument about the pros and cons of adopting or buying. And it just escalated from there."I'll get to the point and say we both started taking it personally and said some things. I said that buying gives you better quality, and that you know what you get. She quite rudely said that if we're paying for quality how come my family’s dogs have had health issues and died young, while her shelter dog lived to be seventeen. She said she looked down on people who'd rather pay thousands of dollars than save a life. We decided to cool down and give the discussion a rest."We both felt unfinished after that but let it go but then we started getting at each other for different lifestyle choices. Like how she wants to get married and have kids one day and how I'm not so sure what I want yet. And how in my family having a degree is important and to her it's not. Sometimes we teased her about it since she only has a certificate but we never meant it rudely to her since she has a great job as a software engineer."She's always been sort of indifferent to everything and said everyone has different values and the right to have different opinions should be respected. She eats meat, wears fur, buys non-organic, buys fast fashion, is non-religious, she's fairly liberal but tends to criticize some social movements, which is all fine but my point is she's never had a firm stance on anything. But it's like I picked a fight about the one thing she feels strongly about and it's been rough since then. I'm not sure what to do anymore and I need advice."Like this show and want us to keep doing it?Show your love by becoming a patron. We're trying really hard not to do the whole corporate money thing. I recently paid for a $40 dinner, spent over $50 on groceries for him this month, and gave him $80 for food and weed. He says he will pay me back next paycheck (and he usually does) but he is always asking for cash. We are very honest with each other and we see each other almost every day. He said that he's flat broke and I even paid off a loan for him, but I found out from a mutual friend that he went to a casino last night. Now, I have no problem with him going out, and he has every right to go out and have fun, but he lives HOURS away from the casino and I am a college student with very little money and have a hard time paying my bills with the money I keep lending him, and he goes off to this casino which is a very expensive place. Whenever he goes out when he's broke he always said that his friends are buying, but I don’t know which friend he could be talking about. He tells me everything too, so it's very unusual for him to go on a day trip and not invite me or tell me about it since we go everywhere together and we always communicate. We have been together for 3 years and have a strong relationship and I spend the night at his house like 4 days a week even though he lives nearly 30 miles away. He’s not a moocher.
