So who's Lee Terbosic? Well, he's a professional magician who's performed for the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Aaron Paul, Gene Simmons, Jack Black, Andy Grammar, etc. In 2016, Lee performed the Houdini's straight jacket escape on the same date/time as Houdini did in downtown Pittsburgh exactly 100 years ago. He also just finished a documentary series for Discovery's Science Channel where he and Houdini's longest living relative, George Hardeen, let the viewers peak behind some of Houdini's finest secrets. Lee also writes, produces and hosts a 1 man theater show in Pittsburgh @ Hotel Monaco called 52 Up Close. (It's wrapped up for the winter but will resume in Summer 2019). However, you can check him out in the spring doing a new/different kind of show "In Plain Sleight" at Liberty Magic on 811 Liberty Ave. This guy has a real cool story that's led to the things he's doing now. This episode is long overdue. Jeff has had such a big impact on my life. I apologize to you (Jeff) it took us this long but you know what they say- "longer the wait, the better it is" (or something like that) I met Jeff years ago when I was looking for a new church. I was a sophomore in college at the time. Some good friends of mine recommended a church out in Pleasant Hills called Freedom Life Center. I figured what the heck I'll check it out. The first service I went to was awesome and definitely digged the vibes. Pretty laid back...casual yet thought provoking. I continued to go and then even started attending a Wednesday Night Bible study. That Wednesday Night Bible study turned into Jeff and I coaching middle school basketball together. From there we just kept building a relationship. I also later started drumming for the church and even helped with the youth group. And no joke, that time period- from when I first started at Freedom Life Center and met Jeff (around 2011/12 til now)- I've enjoyed some of the best, fun, free, times of my life, hands down. There's many reasons why but to put it simply.... Most of it has to do with Jeff teaching, mentoring and looking out for me all these years. I'll always be grateful and now I'm honored to share his story with you. In this episode we discuss: -The father/son relationship -The multi-career path -His trip to Africa -Starting a church -Advice for young people and much more!
This dude is a DJ legend. DJ Nugget holds down Pittsburgh but has played all over the place these past 20 years. Some of these venues include: The Palms Pool in Las Vegas, The Do Over in LA, Down and Derby @ Coachella, and Greenhouse in NYC. I mean, his client list isn't too shabby either. Nugget has played for the Steelers, Porsche, Red Bull, Adidas, Netflix, Miller Brewing, and more. Not only does he DJ but also owns a couple of night spots in downtown Pittsburgh. His first one, the Goldmark, opened in 2015 followed by Scenario Night Club in 2017. He's been voted by the City Paper as Pittsburgh's "Best DJ" in 2016 and the Goldmark won "Best New Bar" in 2016 and the "Best Overall Bar" in 2017. The story with how I got connected with Nugget actually goes back to when I was in highschool. I tell it right at the beginning so I'll let you listen in for yourself. In this episode you'll hear: -How Nugget got his start -Going from DJ to owner -Overcoming Bad Nights -Where the name Nugget comes from -What it Means to Influence/Move a Crowd and more! Sometimes things just happens. I'm down visiting the homie Jared Zych (episode 3) at Twelve BBQ and I run into a crew from my high school, Seton La Salle. D Law is one of the dudes there and we chop it up for a lil. I mention the podcast and yeah we do the interview about a week later. He was a couple years ahead of me back in school and I didn't really know much of his story/ how he made it to the pros. So forsure this episode was really dope and had a blast recording it. Some of the things we discuss: -D Law's showcase that put him on the map -Recruiting decisions -Minor League experiences -Staying focused/present -Learning to control mentality/attitude -MLB stories Stay connected with Derek: Instagram Twitter Subscribe to Chillin with Deke iTunes Google Play Spotify YouTube Social Links Instagram Twitter Facebook
You'll hear the context for this podcast early in the episode but I'll share a little now. Steve is a great friend and mentor of mine. We met at my church, Freedom Life Center, a few years ago but became close friends on a youth retreat. I remember jamming out to some Alice and Chains, talking over dinner, and playing some acoustic guitar. Honestly though, I don't exactly remember too much he told me on this retreat. But I do remember him offering to meet up and help me anytime I needed it. Here I was a 22/23 yr old just starting a job and not knowing to much about anything in life. When an older dude that looks successful, confident and dope personality offers you that, it doesn't make much sense to pass it up. So yeah I took Steve up on the offer and met him at Coffee Tree Roasters one of the following weeks. Ever since, he's been looking out and trying to guide me in the right direction. Thought it'd be great to share some of his insights with you guys. So Ladies and Gentlemen- Steve Gardiner. And for little background of what Steve does. He is a real estate investor, insurance salesman, soon to be life coach, but also a great friend, role model, husband and dad.
This episode is pretty cool because it's from when I spoke in front of my church and gave the message. I share a little bit of my story and what I've learned over the past year and a half. Plus, there's some behind the scenes of how my interview with Jimmy Wopo happened. Hope you guys enjoy. Thankful that I was given the opportunity to speak like this. This episode is one of my favorites because my guest was probably the coolest college professor I had- Dan Dennehy. I took Dan's Brand Management class at Pitt back in 2013 and the curriculum was very unique compared to everything else I had taken before. The grading involved learning journals, discussions, presentations and case studies rather than tests. And it was led in a way where the student had control over what and how they learned. And I'll never forget when we had to turn in our first journals. There wasn't too much direction on how to write them. So I just kinda wrote it like....you know, a journal. I looked up concepts, asked questions, related things to each other. Crossed stuff out, scribbled, doodled. I mean, it was pretty messy. Here's the thing, I never really turned an assignment in like this before for an actual grade. Usually we had to make sure everything was neat, grammatically correct, and the spacing was right. So I didn't really know what to expect when we received them back. A week or so goes by and it's the end of class. Dan stood in the front behind a podium and called out our names one at a time. "Eric DeKlaven" he said I don't even remember if there was a grade put down on the journal, but I do remember what Dan said to me. "This was excellent." I laughed a little. He looked me right in the eye. "Seriously, this was some good stuff." And I walked back to my seat proud, maybe a little unsure but definitely smiling inside. Obviously we feel good about ourselves when we do good work and get complimented. But this was different. This moment might've been the first time in a school setting where learning didn't have to be perfect. It didn't need to be put in a box and was completely in my control. I'm having a difficult time putting it all into words but Dan and that class had a big impact on me. And since having a podcast gives me a good excuse to connect with people, I reached out to Dan to see if we could sit down and record an episode. I wanted to hear his story and some of the insights that's guided him through life. I'm honored to share this episode and really hope you guys enjoy.
Think of it like this. We've all grown up with teachings, beliefs and faith that have been passed down to us from others. Whether it's church, religions, parents, teachers, etc. When you buy-in and live based on these principles, your "religion" becomes apart of you... But what happens when one start to question these beliefs? There's a breaking of sorts, almost like an identity crisis. I think a lot of us have dealt/deal with this type of syndrome. For me, I grew up in Christianity and there's a lot of things that were taught to me which I simply don't agree with anymore. I'm lucky I've had some awesome people around me where this questioning led to nothing more than disagreements and sometimes good debates. In many cases though, instead of healing, religion has brought people pain and loneliness. Should we look at church as bad then? Is religion evil? What about religious people? I mean, how do we deal with this spiritual aspect of our lives if we don't really vibe with all the teachings? Especially if religion brought us hurt and pain in the past? Enter Reba and her story. She suffered from PTCS herself and wanted to fix it. Her spiritual side was suffering so she used a pretty unique project in attempts to face it. Practice 30 religions before her 30th birthday. And she accomplished it, but it was more than just checking off 30 religions. To put it simply, she learned a lot- about herself, God, loving others, finding good in things, etc. There's a lot more I can write but I don't want to give too many spoilers because: 1. Reba wrote an awesome book about her journey called: Post Traumatic Church Syndrome and... 2. We talk about some of this stuff in the podcast lol. Talking points: How Reba was able to get out of her comfort zone What is PTCS? Why she started the project? Overcoming bitterness, resentment Not quitting (even when you want to) The different facets of storytelling/being in the present Big thanks to Reba for coming on the podcast and sharing!
This one was the first podcast I did live in front of an audience and not gonna lie, I was pretty nervous. I was pacing a little, and a couple times I got away from the crowd just to breathe and relax. Things felt pretty good after we pressed record and started though. The venue was South Hills Country Club and it was for my church's (Freedom Life Center) Men's Breakfast. I think a little over 70 people showed up! This episode meant a lot to me not only because it was a live interview but because we did it in front of many of my close friends/family. Big thanks to them for coming out and supporting. So who's the guy I interviewed? His name is Craig Wolfley and played Offensive line for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1980-1989 and Minnesota Vikings from 1990-1991. In 2000 he was named to the Steelers All Century Team and has competed in martial arts, boxing, sumo wrestling and weight lifting. Currently, Craig works for the Steelers as a part of the gamely broadcast team and co-hosts a radio show on 970AM ESPN Pittsburgh. He is also a blogger and podcast host which can be found at CraigWolfley.com. Craig is just a great dude and awesome storyteller. He shares some good ones in the episode, so I hope you guys enjoy! In this conversation we discuss: Craig's fight with Butterbean Best Chuck Noll Story How Chuck changed Craig's Life The importance of mentorship Finding identity outside of football Life as a Broadcaster Success
Leanne Ford is an interior designer who gained national recognition after redesigning an old 1907 PA Schoolhouse. Her work has been published in: GQ, New York Times, Refinery 29, Country Living, Elle Decor, Martha Stewart, Better Home and Gardens and many others. She is also the star, along with her brother, Steve, of HGTV's Restored by the Fords. It involves taking old school buildings and making them pretty dope- to put in "Deke" terms. I met Leanne through one of my good friends, Lydia, at the Ace Hotel for the premiere show of season 1. Going to the show was kind of a spur of the moment thing as I didn't know about it till the day of a few hours before. Actually, I don't even know if I was supposed to know about the premiere, but my buddy Pete Rostosky (episode 1) told me about it. So, I asked his daughter Lydia and she said it was cool. So I went down. I wanted to meet Leanne and see if she'd be down to do the podcast... And of course to drink a couple beers and have a good time. Both got accomplished and here's the episode. Hope you enjoy! Sidenote: We recorded at Leanne's famed old schoolhouse home and the place definitely lived up to the hype. It was sick and thanks to Leanne for making the time. Here's a few talking points of our conversation: Why Ohio U was a top 5 best decision The importance of saying "Yes" Having confidence in what you do Avoiding Trends/ Focusing on Classic Thinking Creative HGTV Opportunity We also discussed Man Code toward the end and Leanne mentioned an article she wrote for GQ that could be of good use for us guys. Greg mentions throughout the episode that he has a hippie half but also a business half. For his business half- Greg owns multiple UPS stores out in San Diego and is a shareholder for a company called Koog Bar. On the other side, he is the founder of the Thrive Barefoot Movement which promotes thriving in life and being barefoot. He also meditates, reads, surfs, etc. Kinda opposite right? I think this concept of duality is prevalent throughout all our lives. Whether its balancing the future/present, being ourselves/ being in community, or even nature vs. technology. There's countless things that contrast but at the same time can go together. It's a struggle but like my buddy Jared says- "A Beautiful Struggle". I don't think there's really a right answer for any of it but I think it's great to embrace and learn about all the different aspects. For instance, you wouldn't think mindfulness would have anything to do with business and vice versa but, in fact, they can go hand in hand. Being mindful can clear the mind for good business whereas being good at business can enable your mind not to worry about money/shelter etc. Beforehand, I didn't think this idea of duality was going to be the clear cut concept I took away from this interview, but after recording and re-listening I couldn't get it out of my mind. We also discuss: Hustling Candy in School Career Arc of Becoming a Business Owner Crushing It At Life (On the Outside) Finding Sobriety Breaking Down Authentic Self/ Who you Are Man Code Challenges of Being Barefoot Hope you guys enjoy as much as I did! This dude's rise on the rap scene has been impressive and I hope he continues to blow up. We've had Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller make it big out of Pittsburgh and all signs point to Jimmy Wopo being next. I saw Wopo's material like way back in the summer and knew I wanted to get him on the podcast. He got the look, swag and talent. It's tough to describe. That "It" factor I guess you can say. He mentioned in our episode that "all (his) life (he) wanted to be somebody" and I think he's about to be. We did this interview backstage at his concert at Mr. Smalls Theater on April 28th. It was real dope. I appreciate Wopo for giving me the time and Taylor for linking us for the podcast. Wopo's a really interesting and thoughtful dude and I'm honored to share his insight/journey. This episode means a lot because I interviewed not a only a really smart dude but a good friend. I've known Ethan since grade school as we both went to Hillcrest together. But after I graduated 8th grade in 2007, I didn't see him again until this past summer. We ran into each other at Carson City down Southside and I'm not sure how Ethan recognized me. But we got to talking/ catching up and I find out that he has his own podcast as well. Ever since, we've been able to chill and discuss ideas and now he's a guest on Chillin with Deke. Ethan's podcast/site is called the University and the slogan is "Learn to Live." His podcast guest list is impressive as he's talked to Human Performance Specialist Brian Mackenzie, YouTube star JP Sears, and XS founder David Vanderveen. My man has some legit insight and I'm excited to share his story and some of the stuff he's learned throughout his journey. Also, he's a sick writer. You can check out his articles here or here. Every wonder what it would be like to be in a near death situation or have your life flash before your eyes? That's exactly what Dave Sanderson faced on January 15, 2009. So I didn't really know what happened on January 15th until I saw the movie Sully a few years ago. (Solid flick. Hanks knocked it out of the park. I'd give it an 84% lol.) Seriously though.... That was a pretty crazy. And I never would've thought that I'd be podcasting with one of the survivors albeit, the last passenger. But here we are. Dave Sanderson is an international speaker/ entrepreneur and was the last passenger off the plane at the Miracle on the Hudson. In addition, Dave has 30 years of valuable sales experience and also worked as the director of security for Tony Robbins. I really appreciate Dave for coming on the show and sharing. Tips and tricks I've learned throughout my 24 years on this earth on how to ask better questions and have meaningful conversations. So this one is a bit of an experiment. I haven't done an episode where it's just me talking the whole time. Speaking hasn't really been one of my strong suits but feel that I've been getting better and better at it. This topic has been on my heart for the past couple weeks and figured it'd be pretty cool to share a little bit of what I've learned on the podcast. Whether you want to have better conversations with friends/co-workers or kill your next conversation at a party, I hope you guys find the information with the episode helpful. Would love to know if you have any tips/tricks for connecting with people as well.

For this edition of Chillin with Deke, I speak with writer and expert draft analyst, Bo Marchionte. His work can be seen at The Draft Bible, Football Insiders, and Lindy's Draft Coverage. He has also done radio sports for NBC, FOX Sports and ESPN and their affiliates. Currently, Bo owns a website- college2pro.com and is a scout for the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers. His site is dedicated to Draft and Steeler coverage but also acts as facilitator for college players to gain exposure and improve their draft status. Outside of scouting and football, Bo enjoys running. I mean really enjoys it.... He currently has a streak which he started back in January 1998 where he runs at least 3 miles everyday. Right now he usually runs for 8-10 miles a day. So obviously in this episode we talk about the streak, how he stays persistent/determined and why he calls running a his mistress. But also, with his experience in the media, we explore how to make connections, talking with strangers and even how to scheme a little lol. A little backstory on how I met Bo. This episode actually is connected to one of my previous episodes- Episode 18 live from the Hall of Fame weekend. Basically, I met Bo in the concourse of the stadium before the inductees gave their speeches and we talked for 30 min or so. Fast forward a couple months later and we connected to do this podcast. We talk a little more in-depth on how we met and the Hall of Fame in the episode. So listen below or subscribe on iTunes.

We also delve into human habit vs human nature, the meaning behind "Yung Pueblo", losing the ego, the power of love and tons more! Diego and I connected for this podcast through Instagram. I discuss a little bit of the backstory in the beginning of the episode, but essentially it goes like this. I followed Diego once I first started my podcast. After graduating college in 2012, Cian Fahey started his own website called PreSnapReads.com which featured football analysis that was and is unique from traditional coverage on TV/radio. He started by researching cornerbacks on every snap they played not just when the ball was thrown their way. The work from his site created opportunities for him to write for other sites like the Football Guys, Bleacher Report, Football Outsiders and Rotoworld. In 2014, Cian moved to quarterback coverage and dissected every pass to see if it was interceptable or not which then led to the creation of his Quarterback Catalog in 2015. Now he can be heard as the official football correspondent on ESPN's Dan LeBatard Show and will be starting a new role for ESPN in the future. In this episode Cian and I discuss, how/why he started PreSnapReads.com, how he built the site, believing in himself and never quitting, how the LeBatard Show opportunity came about, and obviously some Pittsburgh Steelers/football talk. Check out Cian's site PreSnapReads.com for football coverage you won't get anywhere else. Stay connected to Cian to see his newest articles and see what he'll be up to next.
