Bíró Eszter előadóművészként, énekesként, színészként, íróként és a Mazsihisz művészeti vezetőjeként is fontos szereplője a hazai kulturális életnek. A beszélgetés apropója a III. How often does something break that you know could be fixed, but you don't know how and there are no places to fix it? I remember repair stores all over the place, but the field doesn't exist any more. We all know about planned obsolescence and how products are designed to break. Now we feel we have to throw things away and replace them (after avoiding buying things when possible, which is far more than most of us practice).Enter Sandra Goldmark, as a member of a growing movement to fix things and make things fixable. She's also an Ivy League professor at Barnard and the Columbia Climate School, so, no, professors don't have to be out of touch.I met Sandra before the pandemic, at a shop she set up down by the South Street Seaport to repair things. Besides her own book Fixation, she was mentioned in a book (The Repair Revolution) in my sustainability leadership workshop alumni book club.Lest you think people have to be born fixers or educated as engineers, a preconception that I find still holds me back, she shares her background not growing up with those things. On the contrary, she found she enjoyed it and found community.Listen for a basic human approach to fixing things and changing culture.Sandra's home pageHer book, FixationHer page at Barnard Hosted on Acast. Drawing on literary texts, conversion manuals, and colonial correspondence from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain and Peru, Forms of Relation: Composing Kinship in Colonial Spanish America (University of Virginia, 2023) shows the importance of textual, religious, and bureaucratic ties to struggles over colonial governance and identities. Dr. Matthew Goldmark analyses these ties as forms of kinship forged outside of the well-studied paradigms of sex, biology, and procreation. He demonstrates how colonial actors—Spanish and Indigenous—vied for power when they argued that identity could be shaped by spiritual fatherhood, standardised education, or the regulation of doctrine. Forms of Relation illustrates why we must interrogate the dominant paradigms of mestizaje, heterosexuality, and biology that are too often left unchallenged in studies of Spanish colonialism, demonstrating how non-procreative kinships shaped the Spanish colonial regime. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. SynopsisOn today's date in 1939, pianist John Kirkpatrick gave a recital at Town Hall in New York City that included the New York premiere of the Concord Sonata, by American composer Charles Ives.Ives had self-published his Concord Sonata some 20 years earlier and sent copies of it free to anyone he thought might be interested, including then-prominent composer and teacher Rubin Goldmark, who, in 1921, was giving composition lessons to young Aaron Copland. Copland recalled seeing the Concord Sonata on Goldmark's piano but was not allowed to borrow it. “You stay away from it,” Goldmark warned him. “I don't want you to be contaminated by stuff like that.”In 1934, Kirkpatrick saw a copy of the Concord Sonata in Paris and wrote Ives: “I have decided quite resolutely to learn the whole sonata.” It would take him five years, but Kirkpatrick's Town Hall recital would put both him and Ives on the map.A New York Times critic wrote, “This sonata is exceptionally great music — it is, indeed, the greatest music composed by an American, and the most deeply felt and essential. ... Kirkpatrick's performance was that of a poet and a master, an unobtrusive minister of genius.”Music Played in Today's ProgramCharles Ives (1874-1954) Piano Sonata No. 2 (Concord, Mass., 1840-1860) Marc-André Hamelin, piano New World 378

Built around the precious metal, the vault embodies top-notch security and gold-centric design. The conversation touches on how gold's characteristics - longevity, malleability, and ubiquity - make it uniquely suited as both an enduring asset and a geopolitical hedge against fiat currency fluctuations. The group also explores the challenges and misconceptions faced by miners, the role of central bank purchasing, and the potential of location swapping for easier access to physical assets. This is “ReSolve Riffs” – published on YouTube every Friday afternoon to debate the most relevant investment topics of the day, hosted by Adam Butler, Mike Philbrick and Rodrigo Gordillo of ReSolve Global* and Richard Laterman of ReSolve Asset Management.*ReSolve Global refers to ReSolve Asset Management SEZC (Cayman) which is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a commodity trading advisor and commodity pool operator. After Chris McMillan used an Emijay product and the brand was featured in Oprah's Favorite Things, the brand took off. Now at 28, Julianne has debuted Emijay 2.0, where she's introducing the brand's first styling product: Angelstick, a product used to smooth flyaways for your sleekest style ever. Julianne shares which influencer is truly the most powerful when it comes to hair, why (and how) Emijay was able to file copyrights on certain designs, then the trio waxes poetic about what products they're obsessed with and what they want to see next. From 1957 through 1962, John E. Goldmark, an Okanogan-born state representative, spent three terms in the Washington State House of Representatives. He advanced to positions of leadership within the Democratic Party and was regarded as one of the most significant figures in the liberal movement. However, a number of right-wing political rivals launched an effort to portray Goldmark and his wife, Sally Goldmark, as communists or sympathizers, and as a result he was soundly defeated in the 1962 primary election. The Goldmarks filed a libel lawsuit and prevailed in a widely publicized trial, receiving a $40,000 award. Following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in a case involving related concerns, the judgment was later overturned. John Goldmark left his position in government and returned to his ranch in the Okanagan. He passed away from cancer in Seattle in 1979.Many thought the Goldmark story to be done by this point in time, but Right-wing fanatic David Lewis Rice viciously murdered civil rights lawyer Charles Goldmark, his wife Annie Goldmark, and their two boys, Colin, 10, and Derek, 12, in their Madrona home on Christmas Eve of 1985. Rice incorrectly thought that Goldmark was both Jewish and a high ranking member of the Communist Party.Rice later pleaded guilty and was to receive the death penalty. In 1997, his conviction was reversed, and he received a life sentence without the chance for parole.Listen now to learn more about this political intrigue of the Evergreen State and its tragic ending.A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

Synopsis Following the successful premiere of his First Symphony in 1876, the New England composer John Knowles Paine finished a Second, which he gave a German subtitle: “Im Fruehling” or “In Springtime.” In 19th century America, “serious” music meant German music, and “serious” musicians like Paine all studied in Germany. Returning home, Paine became the first native-born American to win acceptance as a symphonic composer, and, accepting a teaching post at Harvard, became that school's first professor of music. On today's date in 1880, when Paine's “Spring” Symphony was premiered at Sanders Theater, the normally staid Bostonians went nuts. One critic who was present, recalled that “ladies waved their handkerchiefs, men shouted in approbation, and the highly respected John S. Dwight, arbiter in Boston of music criticism, stood in his seat frantically opening and shutting his umbrella as an expression of uncontrollable enthusiasm.” Paine's music remained tremendously popular in his own day. In 1883 George Henschel, then the conductor of the Boston Symphony, was sent the following poetic suggestion about his programming: Let no more Wagner themes thy bill enhance And give the native workers just one chance. Don't give that Dvorák symphony a-gain; If you would give us joy, oh give us Paine!
