POPULARITY
Sean and Varn catch up on the first 100 days or so of Trump 2.0, the inanities and indignities of history forced to move again in dumb, but possibly productive ways. Most of all this moment calls for humility amidst radical political and economic changes we might only be able to 'sane-wash' in 20 or 30 years, if ever. How have recent events challenged our priors as Marxists or as Millennials or as Americans? Even if the Left is largely powerless to affect global events, do we at least have the courage to situate ourselves and our own subjectivities within the massive changes of the last 10 to 15 years? How might the left wing of capital respond to the current chaos and how might we?To listen to the bonus portion of this episode (where all the deportable offenses might happen) become a patron at www.patreon.com/theantifada for this and all our great bonus content. To watch this episode on video become a patron of the excellent, independent Varn Vlog at www.patreon.com/varnvlog

Send us a textEco-Leninism, degrowth, and sustainability solutions all come under the spotlight as we welcome the insightful Nicolas D Villareal to Varn Vlog. What if just cutting down on capitalist consumption isn't enough to save our planet? Nico challenges some common misconceptions about degrowth theories, especially those linking human labor to material throughput. We investigate the intricate dynamics of the service sector and its impact on living standards, questioning whether reducing work hours can truly lead to sustainable economies. Join us as we confront the contentious suggestion that living standards in the developed West need to drop for the sake of the planet. The episode also navigates through complex terrains of Marxist theory and state intervention in capitalist systems. Can China's state capitalism offer lessons for eco-socialism? We explore this by diving into how capitalists as personifications of capital have evolved since neoliberal times. With historical perspectives from Marx, Mao, and Lenin, we ponder if modern monetary theory can address systemic ecological issues. We also dissect the shifting economic dynamics among the US, China, and Vietnam and their implications for environmental regulations. Finally, Nico and I brainstorm innovative approaches to socialism focused on environmental sustainability. We scrutinize the role of rationalizing household consumption within socialist frameworks and consider labor tokens and infrastructure investments as potential paths forward. Reflecting on China's collective experiment, we discuss the need to rethink GDP and material incentives while incorporating diverse historical contexts into our solutions. Expect to leave with a deeper understanding of how modern ideologies can meet both human and ecological challenges head-on. Stay tuned for more of Nico's illuminating insights in upcoming episodes. The articles referred to can be found here: The Economics of Feasible Degrowth What is Materialism Support the showCrew:Host: C. Is revolution dead? The left is divided over how to make revolution, and many Marxist and post-Marxist theorists have developed radically new conceptions of revolution that are often highly divergent from how Marx, Engels and Second International Marxists dealt with revolution. Our age is notoriously known as post-revolutionary, and liberal realism has set in so deep that we have seemed to have lost touch with the truths of Marxist insights into revolution. We are experiencing a resurgence of political and cultural radicalism but in the context of the absence of working-class radicalism as expressed through socialist parties, mass parties and labour unions. To help us understand the history and the meaning of revolution, both in its practical and theoretical valences, we are joined by scholar, poet and podcaster C. Derick Varn. C. Derick Varn is the host of the politics and culture podcast Varn Vlog where he probes socialist politics and offers invaluable insights for the left. Please subscribe to his show at @VarnVlog. A lot of people who don't love capitalism might still worry about the way revolutions can go very, very wrong. In the crumbling Russian Empire a little over a hundred years ago, the Bolsheviks came to power on a platform "land, peace and bread" and "all power to" democratically elected workers councils...and ended up with an authoritarian and often economically dysfunctional one-party state where working-class people had fewer right in some ways than their counterparts in Western Europe. What went wrong, and what lessons might still be relevant for those of us who still dream of a pot-capitalist future?A power panel of Varn Vlog host C. Derrick Varn and This is Revolution crew members Mean Djene Bajalan and "Deep State" Kuba join Ben Burgis to wrestle with these questions. And of course we f*ck around about less serious subjects in the postgame for GTAA patrons because that's the deal with that.Watch Varn Vlog:https://www.youtube.com/@VarnVlogWatch This is Revolution:https://www.youtube.com/@THISISREVOLUTIONpodcastCheck out Djene's new public radio show, Talking History Live:https://www.ksmu.org/podcast/talking-historyFollow Djene on Twitter: @djenebajalanFollow Varn on Twitter: @skepoetFollow Kuba on Twitter: @DrKuba2Follow Ben on Twitter: @BenBurgisFollow GTAA on Twitter: @Gtaa_ShowBecome a GTAA Patron and receive numerous benefits ranging from patron-exclusive postgames every Monday night to our undying love and gratitude for helping us keep this thing going:patreon.com/benburgisRead the weekly philosophy Substack:benburgis.substack.comVisit benburgis.com

C. Derick Varn is a poet, teacher, and “arm-chair theorist” (his words, not ours), but Steve called on him for his deep knowledge of history, specifically the history of revolutions.Varn takes a realistic and nuanced look at some of the popular myths about the brutality of key figures, like Stalin and Mao. He suggests placing them in the context of historical geopolitical economic conditions.I'm also just going to remind people that both the Bolshevik Revolution and the Chinese Revolution, in particular, come out of the context of world wars. They happen when they happen during the world wars for a reason. You have highly traumatized societies where the power has been broken because of the consequences of world war, even when the powers at hand are actually allied with the winners.Steve asks whether one should excuse abandoning civil liberties in order to protect the gains of a revolution against very real internal and external threats. “What civil liberties?” asks Varn. Some revolutions never even got rid of their monarchies. The episode considers Bolshevism, Trotskyism, and fascism. Varn talks about why both socialists and capitalists were attracted to fascism, looking, again, to the conditions of the time.C. Derick Varn is a poet, teacher, editor, podcaster, and broadcaster. The recent hit audio podcast show Blowback Season three: The Korean War has captured the ears of many. On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera my guest C. Derick Varn and I examine the Korean War using the hit Blowback podcast as a guide for a critical dialogue about one of the most gruesome modern wars, the Korean War (1950-1953). Derick and I provide an analysis that adds information that is not mentioned in the Blowback podcast narrative about the Korean War. C. Derick Varn is a poet, teacher, and arm-chair theorist. He used to be an expatriate but has returned to the US. He has worked as lecturer on English Literature, Composition, and Intercultural communication as well as a high school teacher in literature, writing, critical thinking and ethics. He was editor for Zero Books. His popular podcast Varn Vlog https://youtube.com/c/CDerickVarnVlog is a wealth of information for understanding the unfolding events, situations, ideologies, and personalities of this era. His other projects include: Parallax Vlog with J.G. Michaels of Parallax Views, No Royal Road with Regrettable Century, and Gaming Materialists with TIR's regular, Djene Bajalan. This is an autoethnographic "self cultural study to be shared with the world" project for both of us as our lives/loved ones have been impacted by the Korean War. Now let's meet the guest of honor! For Sublation Magazine, I wrote an article about Woodstock 99 tacitly defending Nu Metal. In my interview with Derrick Varn for Varn Vlog, we dived deep into the 1990s and 2000s and talked about not only nu metal, but metalcore as well. A somewhat edgy response to the commercial success of Nu Metal. I am pleased to have the opportunity to speak today with one of my favorite vocalists of the late 1990s and early 2000s. With a blend of hardcore punk and metal precision, the genre, for many is a perfect combination. He was a pioneer in the field of metalcore, and some even claim he was responsible for influencing the fashion as well as the sound of the genre. Regular guest C. Derick Varn was gracious enough to invite me on his youtube show/podcast VarnVlog, back in early July. We cover everything from how people's rhetoric gets a lot more heated as the stake argued over decline, the limits on our current horizon for political change, a bunch of Q&A, and a lot more. Subscribe to the VarnVlog here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMuZYE1Q9yNpzn4dzsPtmcQ https://varnvlogvoice.buzzsprout.com/
The following is from an episode of Varn Vlog, in which Fightback editor Alex Grant discusses The future of Trotskyism and Leftism in Canada. C. Derick Varn can be found on YouTube, and on Twitter @skepoet
With Trump out of office, talk of the Border Wall Construction has stopped for the time being. But does that mean that the United States stance on its Drug Policy and has Mexico changed? How has the war on Leftist movements in Latin America created some of the most violent paramilitary drug cartels in recent history? Has the never-ending ‘War on Drugs', and NAFTA helped fuel an influx of refugees from the cartel atrocities and industry destroying trade agreements? Can the Austerity administration and “Hugs not Bullets” strategy of Mexico's current president Manuel Lopez Obrador be the answer to a country awash in corruption and violence? We'll ask these questions and more with Host of Zero Books “Pop the Left” and “Varn Vlog”, C. Derrick Varn. This is Revolution.
