Elephants, the Grass and A Teacher: Recollections and Reflections on the Nigeria/Biafra War by Chinyere E. EgbeThis book is a captivating rendition of Dr. Egbe's personal and family experiences during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). The book will equally go down as an audacious contribution to the historiography of the Nigerian civil war. Not to mention a crash program in military history. Here, his detailed rebuttal of Brigadier Alabi's claim that the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage was the first time elephants were used in battle, comes to mind.Dr. Egbe presents several harrowing experiences and close calls with annihilation of his family. For example, after Dr. Egbe's siblings and their mother were tied up to be executed by Nigerian soldiers in May 1969, one of the soldiers discovered a photograph in which their dad was pictured with the battalion commander who had sent them to arrest the family. Dr. Egbe concludes that the leaders of Nigeria and Biafra learned little or no lessons from the tragedy.Dr. Chinyere Emmanuel Egbe is an economist and currently a tenured full professor of Business at Medgar Evers College (CUNY), where he has taught business statistics and finance since 1989. Dr. Egbe is also a Consortial faculty at the City University School of Professional Studies (SPS). At CUNY SPS, Dr. Egbe teaches Business Mathematics and also provides leadership in curriculum development.During his tenure at Medgar Evers College, Dr. Egbe held various positions. While he was dean, he led the school to gain national accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Schools of Business and Programs (ACBSP) in 2003 and continued to provide leadership to reaffirm the accreditation of the school's business programs in 2013. Dr. Egbe also wrote proposals that established two new degree programs. Community leaders have also recognized Dr. Egbe for his contributions to community Development and awarded him Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition in 2001 and 2018.https://www.amazon.com/Elephants-Grass-Teacher-Recollections-Reflections/dp/B0D3KLSGS2https://igweplinyegbe.org/https://mainspringbooks.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/22725msb1.mp3

On today's show, I interview attorney, author, activist and radio host Lurie Daniel Favors. Lurie is the Executive Director at the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College. In January 2013, she self-published Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl to rave reviews. The classic is currently out of print. Lurie plans to release it again this year to celebrate the book's 10th anniversary. More on that later in the show. I discovered Lurie years ago when she was a contributor on The Karen Hunter Show, which airs on Sirius XM's Urban View. Now, this multi-talent has her own hosting gig on the same channel. The Lurie Daniel Favors Show airs live every weekday from 10 a.m. to noon Eastern Standard Time. It focuses on the messy intersections of race, gender, culture, identity, politics and the law. I am a big fan, so when I heard that my Delta Soror and past Hair! How I Grew It guest Mercy Chikowore knew Lurie, I immediately asked Mercy to introduce us. She did. Lurie said yes to being on Hair! How I Grew It, and I am so grateful. Lurie is a sisterlocks newbie. She got them last year. Before that, she rocked a loose natural for nearly 25 years. Her thoughts on her hair texture have evolved. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hairhowigrewit/message

For many people alarmed at the very visible anti-Black racism at the outset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine two weeks ago, it's important to understand more about the history of Afro Ukrainians and Africans in Ukraine. This conversation between Dr. Clarence Lusane and Nicole Lee sheds some light. We'll learn that it is not a new history. Dr. Lusane, who has traveled and taught in Ukraine and all over the world, shared that after Ghana became independent from British colonial rule in 1957, and in 1960 when 17 other African countries gained their independence from colonial rule, thousands of students arrived in both Russia and Ukraine to study from countries all over Africa, including South Africa, Morocco and Tanzania. Thousands. African students over the years have been drawn to Ukraine for studies including in STEM and medicine because it was relatively welcoming, inexpensive and easy to study there. In 2014, after Russia invaded Crimea, pro-Russian, fascist, nationalistic militias rose up in eastern Ukraine, taking over the Donetsk and Luhansk republics. It was here in the east that African students were kidnapped and violently abused by these pro-right insurgents. Now, in addition to these Africans having arrived to study 60-65 years ago, there are second and third generation Afro-Ukrainians in Ukraine, as well as other diasporic Africans. When Putin refers to neo-Nazism in Ukraine he is, not surprisingly, twisting facts and history. As is true most everywhere in the world, there are neo-Nazis in Ukraine, even serving in the Ukrainian government. Despite that, neo-Nazism does not drive Ukrainian public policy. This conversation gets to the important nuance missed in reporting and social media. There is an important challenge toward the end responding to the question “What is the way forward for progressives?” We hope you'll listen in. About Dr. Clarence Lusane: Dr. Clarence Lusane is a full Professor and former Chairman of Howard University's Department of Political Science. He is an author, activist, scholar, lecturer, and journalist. He has been in the fight for national and international human rights and justice for well over 40 years. He is a pioneer in anti-racism politics. He has written about and been active in U.S. foreign policy, democracy building, and social justice issues such as education, criminal justice, and drug policy. His research focuses on the intersection of race and politics in the US and globally ranging from human rights and social equity to social movements and public policy. As a scholar, researcher, policy-advocate, and activist, he has traveled to over 70 nations. He has lectured on U.S. race relations and human rights in Brazil, Colombia, China, Cuba, Germany, Guyana, Guadeloupe, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Korea, Pakistan, Panama, Rwanda, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine among others. He has taught and been on the faculty at Medgar Evers College, Columbia University and American University, and been a visiting professor and lecturer in the UK, Ukraine, France, Russia, South Korea, New Zealand and Japan. In addition to his forthcoming book,Twenty Dollars and Change: Harriet Tubman vs. Andrew Jackson, and the Future of American Democracy, he is also the author of The Black History of the White House, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice: Foreign Policy, Race, and the New American Century; Hitler's Black Victims: The Experiences of Afro-Germans, Africans, Afro-Europeans and African Americans During the Nazi Era; Race in the Global Era: African Americans at the Millennium; and Pipe Dream Blues: Racism and the War on Drugs among others.

[3:04] My mission in life is to empower others to live in their highest potential, share my personal journey, and teach them how to confront the things they want to change. [3:17] One of the things I always teach as a life coach is that everybody should have a mission statement and when I say that to people, they look at me like I have two heads. [3:41] A mission statement helps you stay focused, gives you clarity, helps you be in alignment, and allows you to prioritize your time based on what's important to you. [4:01] Once you understand what that mission statement is, you can tap into your gifts, talents, natural abilities, skill set, and job experience, and you can pull all those things together to create the life you love. [4:18] My personal journey on transformation began about 16 years ago at a point in my life where I was dealing with major [5:34] When you are pushed up against a wall, and you see your life unraveling before your eyes, that's when you're forced to look deeper within and are forced to confront yourself and ask the tough questions. [ 5:52] The most important question that I ever asked myself was, "Why am I here?" and that is tied to your purpose, your passion, and the things that bring you joy and [6:18] Most people don't even realize that they either have a fixed mindset that comes from the belief that your qualities are carved in stone or a growth mindset that comes from the belief that you can create anything that you want at any given time. [8:00] When you have a fixed mindset, you prefer to stay with what's familiar and tend not to try new things because you feel it's so hard or challenging. [8:21] When you have a growth mindset, you believe that your qualities are things that you can cultivate through work and effort and that you can change anything at any given time in your life. [8:36] You have a growth mindset when you embrace change and new opportunities, and you understand that when you're challenged, there's room for growth for you to evolve. [8:54] When you have a growth mindset, they inspire you to try when you see someone else succeeding. [9:12] It is so important for people to laser in and understand what kind of mindset they have to change it. [9:30] Commercial break. [9:42] Your mindset is the biggest barrier between what you want out of life, where you are now, and where you're trying to be. [10:57] Sometimes in life, you have to retrain your mindset, including retraining your thoughts and belief systems. [11:14] Society puts labels on us all the time, but it's really about finding out who you are, beyond those labels. [11:27] The hardest thing for people is to understand who is the true self, but when you get to the place of the true self, you understand that you are authentic. [11:44] I realized that I have come to the realization of my true self and that I have the power to create whatever I desire, which may not happen exactly when I wanted to, but it will happen. [12:14] When you retrain your mindset, your thoughts cannot be incapable of what you were trying to create. [12:30] You have to be aligned mentally, emotionally, physically if you're trying to manifest change in your life with what you're trying to create. [12:36] The magic in my life began when I started to understand how to let go and living in the present moment, not worrying about your past and not fretting about your future. [13:58] I love the quote by Dr. Dwayne Dwyer, which says, "when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at chang" [14:25] When you achieve the things you want, you're going to desire more things, so it is important to understand your why and your motive behind why you do what you do. [15:00] The first step to changing anything in your life is to change your mindset, and it is the first and most important step to achieving anything you want in life. [16:08] You have to develop a plan of action because nothing happens until something moves. You have to take action steps daily to achieve whatever you want to achieve in life. [16:32] Make a commitment to yourself and discover your true motivation behind why you want to achieve these goals. [16:44] Understand that behind every goal lies a deeper meaning that is motivating your desire, and it is important to understand what that is. [16:55] Take small steps, and don't be afraid to revise your plan and goal. If you take baby steps, you will not be so overwhelmed with trying to make this change happen soon, but you will be taking steps to make it happen. [17:03] You have to learn how to simplify your life and once you learn to do that, you learn not to let things distract your purpose. [18:40] When you are connected to that higher part of yourself, you learn to create the life you love by controlling your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. [19:05] Always focus on your why because when you focus on your why you tend to focus on the things you want and less on the things you don't want. Today is the 96th birthday of the Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers. He paid the ultimate price for his conviction. He was memorialized by prominent authors including James Baldwin and Margaret Walker. In 1969, Medgar Evers College was established in Brooklyn, the same year a community pool in Seattle was named after him. In Jackson, Mississippi, he has a statue, an airport, and in nearby Fayette, his brother was their first African-American mayor (1969). In 2011, the USNS Medgar Evers was christened in his honor. In 2013, Alcorn State University erected a statue and was the subject of a tribute at Arlington National Cemetery. High ranking elected and military officials were in attendance. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. Descriptors such as jungle music, negro music, jazz...African American Classical Music. Black Classical Music. Spirit Music...and African Rhythms...have been attached to the vibrational human expressions, that once organized into various rhythms, notes, and harmonies become what we have come to call—music. The deep structures that organize these vibrations have purpose. They have origin. They have life. They represent life. They aide us through life. They are bridges between and expressions of worlds seen and worlds unseen. They are all around us. Exploring the form and functions of African rhythms and all that they contribute to our world are part and parcel of understanding the interconnections between the material and nonmaterial, and how they inform each other. This past April 2019, at the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilization's (ASCAC) meeting held at Medgar Evers College in New York, a discussion titled African Rhythms: A Workshop on Cultural Continuity and the Future of Jazz, was developed to explore what was laid out above. Who you will hear next in order of speaker, the wide-ranging discussion from this meeting: George Turner is a longtime activist from Brooklyn, NY and currently serves on the Board of ASCAC. Hank Williams is a jazz writer and radio host and professor at Lehman College. Dr. Anyabwile Love is an assistant professor of Black Studies at the Community College of Philadelphia and a scholar of John Coltrane. Dr. Josh Myers (AWNP Collective, is assistant professor of Africans Studies at Howard University. Our show was produced today in solidarity with the Native/Indigenous, African, and Afro Descendant communities at Standing Rock; Venezuela; Cooperation Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi; Brazil; the Avalon Village in Detroit; Colombia; Kenya; Palestine; South Africa; and Ghana and other places who are fighting for the protection of our land for the benefit of all peoples!

Among those interviewed are life long activist Frisner Pierre of Komokoda, Haitian-American Gem Isaac of Bronxites for NYPD Accountability, Haitian-American Yole César and Dwayne Neckles of the United Africa Movement. Hugues also offers a (short) rundown of the spate of labor union strikes in Haiti that have caused certain factories to shut down.
Rudy Crew, the President of Medgar Evers College plans to have Hillary Clinton deliver the Commencement Speech at the school's June 8th 2017 graduation ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center and to give her an Honorary Doctorate. Given her record towards the Black community at home and abroad, is such an honor warranted? Does Hillary's record reflect the legacy of Medgar Evers? Why is Rudy Crew, once a supporter of Rudy Giuliani, helping to ressuscitate Hillary Clinton's career? Should the Haitian community's travails with Donald Trump give Hillary a pass for her record in Haiti on the minimum wage and mostly female garment workers, elections interference at home and abroad and on "pay to play" schemes involving contracts for Earthquake recovery? Join Alice Backer of kiskeacity.com, Dahoud André, host of Emisyon Eritye Papa Desalin and Djery Jean, a student at Medgar Evers College to discuss. See pre- and post-show notes at kiskeacity.com.

Nobody seems to like brown grease, but if you heat it up enough, you’ve got something, says Medgar Evers College assistant chemistry professor Lawrence Pratt: an alternative source of fuel. “Someday petroleum will run out,” he says, and food waste heated to 350 celsius and above is a potential replacement. “We can’t continually rely only on fossil fuels.” Pratt and his compatriots at Medgar Evers College experiment with heated brown food grease. “This stuff does not come from coal, petroleum or natural gas,” says Pratt. “It comes from waste. We need energy from algae. We need solar, we need wind,” he says.

Host Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com and Michelle Materre, founder of Creatively Speaking Film Series and host of Creativey Speaking on the Air welcome Bruce Paddington, maker of the documentary Forward Ever. The film investigates the Grenadian revolution of 1979 which culminated in the killing of Maurice Bishop and several of his colleagues in 1983. (Bruce is with us for the first half hour.) We are then joined by Trinidadian-American trade unionist Roger Toussaint and cultural activist Martin Felix, who came of age in Grenada during the revolution, to explore aspects of this oft neglected chapter of Caribbean history. How was this movement for self-determination launched in the pre-social media era? Why did Reagan take exception to the building of an international airport in Grenada? Did US involvement start at the post-killing invasion or was the Grenadian movement for self-determination infiltrated and destabilized? Originally aired on Creatively Speaking On the Air June 18, 2014. Forward Ever will be screening FREE Friday June 20 at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn at 6PM and again at 4PM Saturday June 21 at Maisles Theater in Harlem.
