Pastor Matt Surber, of Mission City Church in San Antonio, TX, continues a series through the book of Genesis. In what may be the most famous story of Abraham - Abraham sacrificing his son, Isaac - we see an illustration of God's test for us as we follow Him. But this test may not be exactly as it looks on the surface. There is more being asked of Abraham and we look at that today.Missioncity.church________________________________Sermon Notes are available at missioncity.church/watch/

Big Idea: No faith is too weak; no family is too wicked for God. Matthew 1:1-3a This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar). In the Beginning: Judah Genesis 38:1-30 I. Things go wrong from the start. 1-5 At that time Judah left his brothers and settled near an Adullamite named Hirah. There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite named Shua; he took her as a wife and slept with her. She conceived and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er. She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and named him Onan. She gave birth to another son and named him Shelah. It was at Chezib that she gave birth to him. II. Wickedness runs in the family. 6-11 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the Lord's sight, and the Lord put him to death. Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother's wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and produce offspring for your brother.” But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, so whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he released his semen on the ground so that he would not produce offspring for his brother. What he did was evil in the Lord's sight, so he put him to death also. Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He might die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father's house. III. Don't frolic with foreign faith. 12-18 After a long time Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers. Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.” So she took off her widow's clothes, veiled her face, covered herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife. When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. He went over to her and said, “Come, let me sleep with you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me for sleeping with me?” “I will send you a young goat from my flock,” he replied. But she said, “Only if you leave something with me until you send it.” “What should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your signet ring, your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. IV. Why would God choose this family? 19-30 She got up and left, then removed her veil and put her widow's clothes back on. When Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get back the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her. He asked the men of the place, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?” “There has been no cult prostitute here,” they answered. So the Adullamite returned to Judah, saying, “I couldn't find her, and besides, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no cult prostitute here.' ” Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn't find her.” About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law, Tamar, has been acting like a prostitute, and now she is pregnant.” “Bring her out,” Judah said, “and let her be burned to death!” As she was being brought out, she sent her father-in-law this message: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Examine them. Whose signet ring, cord, and staff are these?” Judah recognized them and said, “She is more in the right than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her intimately again. When the time came for her to give birth, there were twins in her womb. As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand, and the midwife took it and tied a scarlet thread around it, announcing, “This one came out first.” But then he pulled his hand back, out came his brother, and she said, “What a breakout you have made for yourself!” So he was named Perez. Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread tied to his hand, came out, and was named Zerah. Next Steps: Believe: I need Jesus to wash away my wickedness. Become: I need the Holy Spirit to make my faith stronger. Be Sent: I will not let my past prevent me from pushing back darkness. Group Discussion Questions: Is it okay to learn about other faiths without damaging your own faith? Has one bad decision led to a series of terrible consequences in your life? Have you ever been ashamed of your weak faith? Have you ever tried to help God by taking matters into your own hands? When did you realize that your family didn't deserve God's grace? Do you believe God couldn't use you because of mistakes in your past? Pray for the courage to push back darkness despite your mistakes and failures.
Episode 271 –Bible: Cornerstone and Context 3 – Timeless Themes Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac … . The Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 1, verses 1 and 2, New International Version ******** VK: Greetings! Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. I’m Victoria K. We’re glad to be back with you on Anchored by Truth as we continue with our series that we call “The Bible: Cornerstone and Context.” RD Fierro, an author and the founder of Crystal Sea Books, is with us again today as we continue our discussion of how people can improve their understanding of the Bible by developing a contextual framework to guide their reading and study. RD, the Bible has a vast variety of material. It contains records of history, inspirational poetry, practical admonitions, moral and ethical commands, and even entertaining stories. All of this material can be engaging and valuable even when we just focus on the individual instruction or report. So, why do think that it is so important for Bible students to take the time to see a bigger picture? RD: Well, I’d also like to welcome everyone joining us here today as we continue our discussion on the cornerstone and context of the Bible. As you’ve noted there’s a wide variety of material in the Bible and even a wide variety of literary genres. The Bible has poems, proverbs, parables, allegories, as well as history and prophecy. And – also as you have noted – we can gain a lot just by learning about individual episodes of the Bible heroes like David with Goliath or Daniel in the lion’s den. And certainly many of the individual psalms are inspirational and comforting just as the individual proverbs contain practical advice that will help people live better lives. But as valuable as all this material can be when considered separately when we see how it is all part of God’s grand plan for His people I think the individual episodes take on even more meaning. As we see God’s overall plan for the created order it increases our ability to glorify Him through our lives and testimonies. VK: And that should be the central focus of every Christian life. One of the major confessional creeds says that the chief purpose of man is to “glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” RD: Yes. It’s certainly important to learn from each part of scripture. But it is also important to be able to see the larger tapestry of scripture where the individual threads and features form a larger and more inspiring whole. And the first step in being able to do is to certainly see that Jesus is present in each and every part of the tapestry. Or to return to other metaphor Jesus is the cornerstone of scripture. VK: And we started out talking about Jesus as the cornerstone in our first two episodes in this series. In our first episode we pointed out that even in famous Old Testament stories that don’t seem to relate to Jesus such as Jonah and the whale Jesus was being foreshadowed. And in our second episode we talked about the elegance of the way in which Jesus’ attributes and work made Him the perfect – in fact the only possible – Mediator between God and man. RD: Yes. When Adam and Eve rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden they violated the Covenant of Works which God had established with them. This left the covenant unsatisfied and incurred a debt with infinite consequences. Jesus came to address both of these concerns. He lived a sinless life. He fulfilled the Covenant of Works. So, he never needed to die for His own sin. This meant that when He willingly sacrificed Himself He could atone for the sins of others. Moreover, since Jesus was fully divine as well as being fully human He is a Being of infinite value. His death was infinitely valuable. Therefore, he could satisfy the infinite debt that man had created for himself. VK: But Jesus’ death is only of value for those who are willing to trust Him. As you put it in the title of one of your books, Christ is The Prodigal’s Advocate. We are all prodigals. We all need an advocate to face the perfect bar of God’s justice. Without an advocate we will be left to defend ourselves – a futile effort if there ever was one. But Jesus will gladly serve as our advocate if we will let him. The choice is ours. So, are the consequences of our choice. RD: Right. So, today I want to build on the foundation we have established. I want to build on the fact that Jesus is the cornerstone of scripture.
Summary of Sermon: Covenant by Nick This sermon explores the story of Abraham and Sarah from Genesis 17, focusing on the concept of God's covenant and its enduring promises. Key Points: God's timing: The passage highlights the vast amount of time that can pass between God's promises and their fulfillment. We can get discouraged by waiting, but God's faithfulness endures. (Genesis 16 & 17) Resilient Faith: The long wait for a child teaches us about the importance of holding onto faith and God's promises even when there seems to be no progress. (Romans 4:17-21) God initiates the relationship: God is the one who pursues a relationship with us, revealing Himself and offering His blessings. (Genesis 17:1) God's Sovereignty: We are not God. There's a healthy reverence and humility required in our relationship with Him. (Genesis 17:3) The Power of Names: Names and labels can influence our perception. God changes Abram's name to Abraham signifying a shift in his identity and future. (Genesis 17:5) Transformation: God desires to transform us from the inside out. We can hold ourselves back by clinging to past limitations. (Gideon - Judges 6:11-16) Promises vs. Feelings: God's promises are not contingent on our emotions. We can rely on His faithfulness even when we doubt or feel discouraged. (Genesis 17:1-8) Signs of the Covenant: Circumcision served as a physical reminder of God's covenant with Abraham. God gives us various signs to bolster our faith. (Genesis 17:11) Illustrations: The author uses contemporary examples like service awards and long-term friendships to illustrate God's faithfulness despite the passage of time. The story of Zacchaeus from the Gospels demonstrates how God takes the initiative in relationships. Applications: We are encouraged to develop a resilient faith that trusts in God's promises even when facing challenges. We should acknowledge God's sovereignty and majesty in our worship. The sermon challenges us to examine the labels we place on ourselves and be open to God's transformative work. We can rely on God's enduring promises regardless of our emotional state. So right into the heart of the story of Abram and Sarah I and remember Karen spoke very challenging last week about the birth of Ishmael and how that came about. And so if you do have a Bible or a phone or iPad or whatever it is figured up to Genesis 17 and we'll read it so we get some context into what I want to say this morning. So Genesis 17 from verse 1. When Abram was 99 years old the Lord appeared to him and said I am El Shaddai God almighty serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants. At this Abram fell face down on the ground then God said to him this is my covenant with you I will make you the father of a multitude of nations what's more I am changing your name it will no longer be Abram instead you will be called Abraham for you will be the father of many nations I will make you extremely fruitful your descendants will become many nations and kings will be among them I will confirm my covenant with you and your descendants after you from generation to generation this is the everlasting covenant I will always be your God and the God of your descendants after you and I will give the entire land of Canaan where you now live as a foreigner to you and your descendants it will be their possession forever and I will be their God then God said to Abraham your responsibility is to obey the terms of the covenant you and all your descendants have this continual responsibility this is the covenant that you and your descendants must keep each male among you must be circumcised you must cut off the flesh of your foreskin as a sign of the covenant between me and you from generation to generation every male child must be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth this applies not only to members of your family but also to the servants born in your household and the foreign-born servants whom you have purchased all must be circumcised your bodies will bear the mark of my everlasting covenant any male who fails to be circumcised will be cut off from the covenant family for breaking the covenant then God said to Abraham regarding Sarah your wife her name will no longer be Sarah from now on her name will be Sarah and I will bless her and give you a son from her yes I will bless her richly and she will become the mother of many nations kings of nations will be among her descendants then Abraham bowed down to the ground but he laughed to himself in disbelief how could I become a father at the age of a hundred he thought and how can Sarah have a baby when she is 90 years old so Abraham said to God may Ishmael live under your special blessing but God replied no Sarah your wife will give birth to a son for you you will name him Isaac and I will confirm my covenant with him and his descendants as an everlasting covenant as for Ishmael I'll bless him also just as you have asked I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants he will become the father of twelve princes and I will make him a great nation but my covenant will be confirmed with Isaac who will be born to you and Sarah about this time next year when God had finished speaking he left Abraham on that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and every male in his household including those born there and those he had bought then he circumcised them cutting off their foreskin's just just as God had told him Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised and Ishmael his son was 13 both Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on that same day along with all the other men and boys of the household whether they were born there or bought a servants or were circumcised with him that's the story Genesis 17 the title is covenant but I've broken down going through that passage broken it down into a number of different sections so we've just got some some points that we can draw from in terms of our application and our understanding of the story and the first thing that I want us to think about is that God's word and God's promises over our lives have no sell by date you don't get to a point where you think well yeah that was then but this is now you know that that is sort of worn out now it doesn't you know God may have said that in the past but but I think things have moved on we've progressed we've gone to a new situation a new reality and maybe the promise doesn't carry the same weight as it once did and one thing that's easy to miss with these accounts in Genesis has been pointed out over the last few weeks is just how long the span of time is between the events Karen spoke last week about the events leading up to the birth of Ishmael and here that was in chapter 16 and in chapter 17 Ishmael is 13 years old already it's like super fast forward I was saying we've raced to chapter you know 17 this this is a long period of time and we still haven't seen the fulfillment of the original promise given to Abram Abram and Sarah as they were then messed it up as Karen pointed out they and they involved Haegar in a in a plot to try and try and manipulate God's blessing and to work out how it would how the promise could actually be brought about according to their own understanding and God said no that's not the way it's going to be I'm going to bless you from a son from your own body and yet 13 years later we still haven't seen it when Erika spoke she talked about there being 25 years between the promise the original promise that Abram would have a son and the birth of Isaac 25 years is a decent amount of time isn't it it's not as long now as it once seemed but it's still a long time teaches me about and us about the longevity the length the span of time that God's promises can cover they can span years decades and they're still as valid today as they were the day they were given and we're an instant-minded people aren't we we if we send a text or a WhatsApp and we haven't had a reply in 20 minutes we think what's wrong what's wrong with those people haven't they maybe I better send them another one or send them a different one if you send a WhatsApp try a text message or then an email maybe even radically give them a ring they've seen the message there's two blue ticks and they haven't written back why aren't they answering I've got a number of friends now that I've turned off that blue tick thing so you never know with it yeah maybe we'll give them a nudge I remember we used to get a gold watch or a carriage clock when you've done 25 years service in a company my son my youngest son started a new job last May and this week he got his long service award he did personal letter from the CEO congratulations on on finishing a year we're not very good at allowing the passage of time are we without wanting something dramatic to show for it I mean he did laugh I like his perspective he did they understand it was a funny thing long service award for a free I don't know what they're expecting but these accounts ground us in the fact that God's work in our lives take a lifetime faith in Jesus is a long game I keep referring see I'm really good on I listen to what everybody said Chris spoke many weeks ago and said about a long obedience in the same direction I've read that book as well the world my world looks very different from when I was 16 and when I first came to faith it's four years so so much has changed but things God spoke to me then are still being worked out now and some haven't even come to be I found in the attic the other day a number of prophetic words I got in about 1988 and it was it's fascinating to see that these things still carry weight they still stand and I wonder if you struggle when God seems slow or even seems to have forgotten about you all together Genesis teaches us that just because nothing's happening doesn't mean nothing's happening God allows our lives to unfold and he doesn't seem to be worried by taking time Charles Slagle once said that God is extremely slow but he's never late he doesn't give us updates or commentary he told them 13 years ago actually you've got it wrong Ishmael is not the blessing there's going to be a son from your body 13 years later they're still waiting there haven't been there haven't been daily updates or you know like we get from Steve we get emails from Steve keeping us up to date with what's going on in case we in case we lose heart that God doesn't seem to to operate in the same way Steve but he's building strong resilient people who have the strength to hold on to him and his word even when there's no external disco even when there's no external encouragement even when we don't actually get the updates even when we don't know we haven't got you know our latest sort of nugget of encouragement from God or from anybody else can we keep holding on can we keep resilient can we keep our eyes focused on the promise on our understanding of what God has said we struggle don't we in that in the African churches which we've been so much a part over the years there's the thing where somebody was out God is good if he was there all the time and all the time God is good because that is his nature and it's a wonderful declaration but it's something in our in our sort of society that we can start to undermine and we can start to question and say yeah but there's all this that's happened and that's that happened but there's something about those statements and those declarations that are so important to actually say that yes God is good he's good throughout the span of time he's good throughout every change in our circumstances he's good in sickness and he's good in health he's good in poverty and he's good in wealth he's good all the time and there's a resilience and a strength that is needed in our hearts in order for us to navigate the life of faith and particularly in the times that we live in we have to be those that can hold on resiliently and rigidly onto onto the Word of God and say that we know what he said and we know what he would do and we will not be knocked sideways or blown around by everything that happens to us or everything that can come or everything that might undermine our faith we say know that we know that we know the God who we have believed so what Paul said didn't he I know who I have believed and I'm persuaded that he is able that's nothing to do with feelings that's nothing to do with what might happen tomorrow that's to do with what we know what we know deep in our hearts what we've been persuaded and what we've come to the settled realization about that God is good and faithful in Romans it tells us the story about Abraham Abraham they said he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead and yet against all hope in hope believed and so became the father of many nations he faced facts and yet still believed can we face facts and still believe still hold on still choose faith still choose joy still choose that overcoming attitude to endure confusion and loss and hold firmly to what we know about God always challenged by the the accounts in the book of Acts about people like Silas and Paul when they were whipped and they were flogged and they were they were thrown in a dungeon and they were locked in stocks and there was there was there was nothing good about their situation and yet they were able to respond with joy they were able to respond with worship because they knew that they're God they they knew who they had believed and were persuaded in every way that he was good that he was faithful and that he would do what he had promised and that whatever happened to their lives God's promises would stand and that's the situation that we have and that's the the type of people that God is wanting to build in us we need to be tough we need to be tough people tough for tough in our faith tough in our resilience tough in our ability to hold on to the word of God and you don't need me to tell you that life has its own curveballs it has its own challenges it has unexpected twists and turns the question is will we stand when those things come will we know that God's promise is not undermined it's not set aside it's not forgotten but it stands in our lives secondly our relationship with God is his idea and not ours God appeared to Abraham and didn't just speak but gave him his name I am El Shaddai God Almighty that's a real big deal for someone fought for God to come to Abraham and reveal his name not just say you know give me sacrifices give me worship give me loyalty give me give me your stuff give me all those things he's actually I'm going to give you my name I'm going to give you my presence I'm going to give you my who I am could be reticent about using our first and English people can be can't we we're a bit more relaxed here you know I I am Nick or whatever you know but in in tradition we we don't like to keep our powder dry a little bit who we are we we we're a little bit more formal Americans are very relaxed about it all but giving our name it's a bit like the lifting of the veil this is who I am it reveals something about ourselves all the local tribes had their gods that they offered sacrifices to but he was God Almighty drawing closes and this is who I am I'm going to give myself to you Abraham through no for no reason except that I'm choosing to do it and the Bible is a story of how God has revealed himself to us and his intention to be known by us we think we hold ourselves back who think I'm not good enough I'm not strong enough I'm not faith filled enough I'm not you know I don't think I can really aspire to a relationship with God and yet we find God has actually come to us and revealed himself to us of his own volition and his own choice I am El Shaddai God Almighty God's idea to have a friendship with you not yours so when you think I don't know if I could be a very good friend of God go say well I'm being your friend I want to be a friend with you and yet we disqualify ourselves when it is actually God who has approached us God who has revealed himself to us God who has gone before us and lavished us with mercy and grace you look at yourself and you say well who am I that God should know me that you know that I could I could even think maybe I'm just on the edges I'll look just like Zacchaeus in the tree and he was he didn't even qualify himself he didn't want to introduce himself to Jesus he just wanted to see what was going on and so he climbed up like a spectator in life and looking down just to see if he could benefit from just seeing what Jesus was doing with his real friends and in the middle of it all Jesus looked up pointed at him and called in my name and says Zacchaeus come down because I'm coming to your house I'm coming to your house not would you like to come to my house I'm coming to yours he's very bold Jesus wasn't he wasn't very English I'm coming round get the kettle on that's the position of security we're in we are safe we are secure we are blessed because our blessing is from God to us not the other way around that he comes to us and he says I am God almighty of all the people to introduce themselves to us God almighty makes himself known to us made himself known to Abraham thirdly God is God and we are not sounds obvious doesn't it but it's easy to forget God is God and we are not verse three at this Abraham fell face down on the ground God spoke to him and Abraham didn't speak back he fell face down on the ground and God said to him this is my covenant with you and explained the terms of the covenant God has come to us and he's announced himself to us and his desire to have a relationship with us but it doesn't sort of put us on a unequal as somebody once said he's God almighty not God almighty so there he comes so close and there's such an opportunity for us but yet there was something in the revelation that Abraham received that caused him not to just say all right God let's have a chat he got down on his face on the ground and then God spoke to him and there's something about that relationship that we need to I think that was reflected in some of the songs that we chose this morning the the power and the glory and the majesty of who God is is so vital for us in our relationship with him because we have we're invited into a beautiful relationship with him we're invited into his promises we're invited into his blessing but we have to remember who we are and who he is and we have and there must be always that dynamic of worship between us you know we have that thing people will say well when I see God I'm going to have a word with him and I'm going to I'm going to ask him a few questions I'm going to sit him down and he's going to answer me these things we think well okay we'll see how that works out because there is a difference there is a difference between God and us there's a difference between the eternal and the flesh there's a difference and we have to know it and we have to respond to it we are free in our relationship with God but we have to know who he is he is God and we are not Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and from that time they decided we're going to decide now what's good and you find it now don't you people will say well if God is going to say this and if God is going to say that then you won't find me worshiping him I couldn't worship a God like that there are even people that will that will assert that what God has said is evil or wrong or not progressive or not modern enough or whatever it is and we have to understand that whatever we think we are not the judges of God and Abraham fell down on his face and then God spoke to him that was the position from which God spoke to him and there is that in our hearts where we have to know that we are we are who we are before God in order that God might speak to us we are not God God is God Simon Peter when he had interacted with Jesus he knew who Jesus was they were friends together they'd done all sorts of things together but when there was a revelation about who Jesus was who this was standing in front of him he said go away from me Lord because I'm a sinful man Isaiah when he saw God himself he said woe to me because I am a man of unclean lips and I live amongst the people of unclean lips there is a conviction that comes just by being in the presence of God and we need to be prepared for that and ready for that because that is the reality of what it means to be worshipers a revival of worship that will turn us inside out and put us down on our faces it challenges the natural arrogance of our hearts as we come to terms with what it means I am God Almighty and that immediately affects the way that we interact and the way that we relate with God thirdly or fourthly or fifthly I can't remember how many we've done three thank you God changes our names or changes names and he changes outcomes he changes the labels that are put upon our lives Abram's name was changed from Abram exalted father to Abraham father of many after 25 years things were beginning to happen at long last God said this time next year you will have a son and I'm changing your name from Abram to Abraham exalted father to father of men it's a good label Abram was a good name not a bad name and he said there's a change of gear now we are we are moving from from from one position to another where we are looking at the eternal blessing with the eternal promise this son you thought you'd worked it out Isaac each male was born and all of that but then none of that is gonna is gonna is gonna affect the eternal promise but it's Isaac who will be the source of the blessing and so Abraham's name was changed to accommodate the word over his life and future names and labels matter and names and labels can keep us rooted in the past or they can build faith for the future and our understanding and then there's so many things that we might it might be our actual name came across a child in our sad situation in our time in Zambia and when we asked the child's name we were told it was rubbish that was that was the name of the child and and it was such a such a terrible you know it's almost like something you throw away and yet and so people of faith and I think the family came to faith as well and they decided to change the name of the child to blessings or gift gift that's what it was gift not something but you know those simple things like that matter our names your name might mean something it might it might not is something that parents do these days a lot more than they used to do look into the meanings of names and what it all means on sort of want to our aspirations and our expectations our hopes for our children so we'll let's encompass it in a name I think Nicholas means great leader or something look it up later but we can label ourselves in our in our hearts and our emotions we can say well this is just what I am this is who I am this is what I've always been this is what I'll always be it's interesting how they stick isn't it I was fascinating you know the Jesus had had supper in the home of a man called Simon the leper he was someone who'd been healed but he was he's still carried that that label but there are things from our things from our past things from our our understanding of ourselves things from our upbringing that shape our expectation of what we can be and what God can do in our lives and God himself comes to right at the beginning of history comes to Abram says I'm going to change your name to Abram because I know that names matter and know that labels matter and and it's true of us today that there is so much that can can be encompassed in the labels that are placed upon us whoever controls the labels controls the outcome and we need to hear what God is calling us not what we call ourselves he would come to Gideon in the Old Testament while he was hiding away threshing wheat in a wine press an impossible thing to do and he said the Lord is with you mighty warrior and he looked out and he said I'm anything but a mighty warrior but that was what was spoken over him Jesus would change Simon's name I tell you you are now Peter and on this rock I'll build my church so much that is carried in the in the names that we that we have and very often we look back and we judge ourselves and we shape ourselves and we make the the Abram was limited by the by his imagination in terms of what he understood of himself and God was coming in and saying no I'm going to stretch your imagination and God wants to stretch our imagination about what is possible about what grace can mean in our lives about what transformation can look like you know we talk the message of transformation but we don't often really grab hold of what it means to be transformed from the inside out that we we have a gospel of transformation but we really expect to be the same we year after year after year and yet there is an opportunity and I know there are people in here that could give testimony after testimony of how God has transformed them from one place to another but we want to see that multiplied over and over again and one of the things that will be the key to that is if we are prepared to change the labels over our lives and our expectations over what can happen even the good things there are many good things many transitions that we go through in life from one good thing to another and yet it's that previous good thing that can hold us back whether it's a a life change of direction or change of employment retirement whatever it is there can be all of that and we can we can we can fail to really step into the fullness of all that's ahead of us because we we're pulled back a little bit by what we what we hear from the past God changes labels and finally the promises of God are not attached to our feelings we rely on our feelings very much for our encouragement don't we we encourage ourselves if we feel good all is good we feel good God is in heaven if we feel bad maybe years we're not sure other promises still standing other promises are strong when we feel bad as when we feel good and God was establishing here with Abraham an eternal unconditional covenant he changed his name and then he gave him an enduring mark he didn't say you know just just remember this you just tell tell people he said actually what we're going to do is give you quite a radical mark of circumcision to remind him and everyone of the promise Erica spoke about the signs of the covenant about the rainbow and the starry night and how Abraham had nine thousand starry nights to consider the promise of God and nothing that ever happened to him in his life was ever going to remove those stars from the heaven it doesn't matter you know and with it there was desolation all around him he could still look up and those stars would be there to remind him and God gives us marks that remind us that actually these promises are outside of ourselves they're outside of our circumstances are outside of whatever might happen to us and they are deep and permanent God came to him spelled out that he was going to become a father and it was Sarah his wife who would give birth and he laughed in disbelief this is Abraham the father of faith by the way who got all his credit all his righteousness credited to him for faith his first response was to laugh and and as I was preparing this I remember that song by Michael Cobb they called him laughter I won't sing it to you before he came after the father had made an impossible promise come true the birth of a baby to a hopeless old lady no offense to the to Sarah on there but just amazing what God can do but Abraham his his human response was to laugh how can this be it's impossible but then from that laughter he got himself together he took a deep breath and he stepped forward and he did what God had told him to do he did the circumcision he made the mark on his body and everybody else's all the other male bodies that were there to remind them of the of the nature of the covenant he set aside all his feelings and he acted on God's word he chose to believe he chose to put things into action he chose to to mark himself permanently in order that he would always remember what God had said and every generation after would remember what God had said because there needs to be those things in our lives we need to be those those moments where we take a decision to say actually we're not I don't even care what's going to happen tomorrow I don't even care what's happening to me at the moment I am going to choose to believe in the goodness and the permanence of the promises of God as we look forward as individuals as we look forward as a church and we consider all that God is going to do we choose to believe in the promises of God so excited and it's encouraging when we hear the hundred thousand pounds has come in and we think oh well maybe we got it right after all that's not what we're thinking or what we should be thinking you know that's a relief few they actually know that's what we that's actually what we expect because God has placed something in our hearts and promised us things that we are now seeing the unfolding of and so therefore we will continue to see the unfolding and we will continue to see and we will see God establish things in this community and in this church that even we won't even see the fulfillment of there'll be others that will come after us because we believe in the promises of God it's not down to you know did did we get it right did we get it wrong what do we feel today or how you know how's it going how was the how was the feeling at the prayer day what do people think we don't take focus groups to decide whether the promises of God are still valid they are there but perhaps our response when we consider what God has said is to laugh and we have to be those that will then stand up and take action and make decisions and allow ourselves to be marked by the promises of God not just moved by the promises of God let's not allow it would only just be a moved emotionally into a into a into faith but we want to be marked forever to say we are people who have staked everything on the promises of God and as we come to communion don't want to take away from what James said he's going to say but as we come to communion it's that that is so important it's that it's that it's not an emotional process it's not something that we go through and we we try to find the emotions for communion but it's actually a physical thing to remind us that these promises stand forever that this covenant stands forever remember God's word stands no matter what time has passed he wants us to choose faith in him regardless of what has happened or is happening or will happen he has chosen to come to us and open a relationship with us not the other way around God is God and you are not I am not God has things to say about you your life your future that are different to what others have said or you've said about yourself and we need to listen to him and what he says and it may be difficult to believe God or to trust him but you can choose to do it you can determine to put your trust in him every day for the rest of your life and be marked forever as a believer in Christ and as a believer in God not just while things are running well but forever forever and ever and ever and on into eternity amen God bless you

On the second day of Rosh Hashanah each year we read chapter 22 of Genesis, the Binding of Isaac episode. Abraham is instructed to take his beloved son Isaac and offer him as a sacrifice atop Mount Moriah. Abraham does as told, only to be stopped at the very last moment. In this very special Parsha podcast episode, we explore three dimensions of this iconic event. We try to go deep and deeper as is our mandate. We begin by addressing the three times that people are described as walking together; we proceed by suggesting a new approach to the call of the angel, "Abraham, Abraham;" and we end with the curious overlap between Abraham's Binding of Isaac and Adam's banishment from the Garden. This is an episode that you will really enjoy.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –This Parsha Podcast is dedicated in loving memory and leilui nishmas David Gedaliah ben Efraim, the unforgettable David Genecov, of blessed memory, whose first yartzeit falls out this Thursday, the day that this podcast is being released.

Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Matthew 1:1-16,18-23 A genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham: Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, Tamar being their mother, Perez was the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon was the father of Boaz, Rahab being his mother, Boaz was the father of Obed, Ruth being his mother, Obed was the father of Jesse; and Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Azariah, Azariah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah; and Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the deportation to Babylon took place. After the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob; and Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ. This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph; being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.'
Day 165 Today's Reading: Galatians 3 The letter to the Galatians is a call back to reintroducing the simplicity of the gospel message. It's so simple that the formula has not been changed for five thousand years. And Galatians 3 tells us something epic and answers a question I have been asked many times: how did the Old Testament people become believers or Christians? How did those in Genesis through Malachi have a relationship with God? This may surprise you, but there's no better New Testament letter to answer this than the book of Galatians. Paul says this: Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. (Galatians 3:6-9) These words are incredible. Paul associates so many New Testament salvation words with Abraham: Abraham believed; reckoned to him as righteous; God preached the gospel to Abraham; and finally called the believer. Wow! This sounds like a Christian from the book of Acts not someone from 2000 BC, from the book of Genesis. Abraham the believer is a great name for the Old Testament patriarch. How did an Old Testament person become a Christian? Simple. The same way we do. They were called upon to believe God—just as the book of Romans tells us that belief in God makes us righteous, or reckoned. I love that word. Reckoned is a word Paul uses for the result of belief. The word means to impute. To make it even simpler, it is to put into an account. It's like watching a spy movie and the characters are electronically sending huge sums of money to a Cayman Island account. This is what happens to those who believe in God: God sends righteousness to your account. Righteousness is not from stringing together a bunch of obedient successes and good days in being a Christian. Righteousness is imputed, reckoned, sent to our account, like to a Cayman Island offshore account. It's something huge . . . righteousness. All because we do one thing: believe in God. That's the gospel of the New Testament and that was the gospel of the Old Testament, which Abraham had preached to him. Jonathan Whitefield was preaching to coal miners in England, and he asked a man, “What do you believe?” “Well, I believe the same as the church,” the man said. “And what does the church believe?” “Well, they believe the same as me.” Seeing he was getting nowhere, Whitefield said, “And what is it that you both believe?” “Well, I suppose the same thing.” That's elusive belief. The question we should ask is, what did Abraham believe? I think Hebrews 11:6 tells us: “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” The writer of Hebrews says that we must believe that He is. That means Abraham believed all that God disclosed about Himself. That God is exactly who He said He is. Why is that important? First, it's not making up things about God's character but believing what He reveals. And for Abraham, it started with “God is one, not many,” like the polytheistic cultures he was surrounded by. Abraham did what Martin Luther King Jr. expressed: “Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Apologist Ravi Zacharias said: “We have a right to believe whatever we want, but not everything we believe is right.” As time progressed all the way to the book of Galatians, it still holds true that we
Day 121 Today's Reading: Romans 4 Romans 4 is just as much a faith chapter as is Hebrews 11, which gets called the hall of faith. Romans 4 gives us a ground level look of the steps of faith of the father of faith, Abraham. Paul shows us a specific situation Abraham had to walk out in faith and how he did it. And then Paul encourages us to “follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham” (verse 12). Let me take you to the dead of winter in the Midwest. Overnight a foot of snow has fallen, and today, you have to trudge through that snow as you walk to the train or bus. In that much snow, you don't step in fresh snow, you step in steps—the footprints of people who went before you. They left a track that makes it a bit easier for you to negotiate the terrain. The easiest way to walk then is to put your feet where feet have been. Step in their steps and it makes the journey easier. So let's look for those steps that Abraham already laid for us, and step in his steps. Let's first refresh our memories about the story that underlies Abraham's steps of faith. God promised Abraham and Sarah, his wife, a baby. The problem: he was one hundred years old and she was ninety. I'm not a doctor, but I think this is a problem . . . unless you have an even bigger God involved in the situation. And Abraham did. What steps did Abraham leave for us to walk in? First, faith doesn't ignore the raw and discouraging facts that are staring us in the face. Real faith is able to look at what really exists. This is the kind of faith Abraham had: “Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb” (Romans 4:19). Abraham contemplated. That means he looked at the facts carefully and with great deliberation, looking at every possibility, leaving nothing out. Here is what Abraham knew to be the facts: In regards to himself, at one hundred years old, his body was as good as dead. Regarding his wife, Sarah, at ninety years old, her womb was dead. Smith Wigglesworth once said, “I am not moved by what I see. I am moved only by what I believe.” Faith looks at the situation and faces it. And Abraham's situation looked impossible. Second, faith finds good footing in God's Word. I have a Bible that puts in capital letters any Old Testament passage quoted in the New Testament. In verses 17 and 18, that happens twice. It is Abraham going back to what God told him. The two times the capital letters are used are God speaking to Abraham: (As it is written, “A father of many natIons I have made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” As it was written about Abraham, “A father of many nations I have made you.” That is future. But in the present, he was father of no one. You can be honest about what the situation looks like. But you then must find yourself speaking more about what God says to your situation in the Word of God. Staying close to God's Word will help you speak into future instead of complaining about your present circumstances. Fill your mouth with what He promised, His Word. Finally, the God you believe in will determine your faith level. There is a biblical phrase used many times about Abraham: “Abraham believed God.” It is used all over the Bible—from Genesis to Romans, Galatians to James. But what makes the phrase valid is that there is another phrase associated with Abraham in the Bible just like this one. It's in 2 Chronicles, Isaiah, and James. And I think it has something to do with the first phrase. The second phrase determined his faith

I say, if you're corsetry His body and dressed, and two, they laid him down and Josephs to the streets. 6 (13m 39s): You buy Haffey stone. 6 (15m 27s): In robes of why the blazing shall Pierce. The hand-eye will ride among the same. My gaze transfixed on Jesus. 7 (17m 55s): We are so grateful. So grateful for sunshine and overwhelmed by your goodness. Every time we do an outdoor service, you just make things happen for us. Thank you, God, that you are in charge of the weather and overseeing all things in life for God. And so we just invite your presence. Lord, we invite you to eat to us, to continue to move among us. God, every person's in a different season of life, dealing with different challenges and struggles. And as we've gathered, Lord, you've got the capacity and the desire to speak to each of us, to minister, to each of us. 7 (18m 39s): And so we invite you to do that and just a powerful and profound way. Do what only you can do work supernaturally in every soul gathered Lord, we prayed. We are so thankful for your love. So, so thankful for your goodness. We bless you Lord in Jesus name. Amen. Hey man, he is raised in say seated. He is risen. He is risen. Indeed remain standing. And we're going to read from Matthew 28 drinks. Yes, sorry. Please stay on Matthew 28 verses one through seven. It says this early on Sunday morning as the new day was dawning Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. 7 (19m 23s): Suddenly there was a great earthquake for an angel of the Lord, came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone and sat on it. His face shown like lightning and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid. He said, I know you're looking for Jesus. Who was crucified. He isn't here. He is risen from the dead, just as he said, what happened? He has risen from the dead just as he said, what happened? 7 (20m 4s): Come, come see where his body was lying. And now go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead. And he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you? The angel said, don't be afraid. He has risen from the dead. Amen. Amen. Turn and greet somebody. And we will come right back in just a moment. Say hello to your neighbor. We'll come right back. 7 (21m 10s): Alrighty, come on back. Come on back. I'm going to met somebody new today. Somebody, anybody being in a brand new. Good, good, good. That's the idea. Welcome. So I've got a joke to kick us off here as we kind of get things rolling again. I'm told that everybody loves my jokes. And so here we go. Did you hear, did you hear about the Jewish guy who sold his family tomb? His wife was furious with him. This family tomb had been in the family for generations and she assumed rightfully so that she would be buried there, that her husband would be buried there. 7 (21m 51s): And that generations following would be buried there. So she asked him, who did you sell the family tomb to? She said, he said, well, it was this guy named Jesus, but he told me that he only needed it for three days. That's as good as it gets research. Sorry guys, we're talking about hope today. Hope resurrected in order for something to be resurrected, someone or something to be resurrected. And obviously it has to be dead first. So when we talk about hope being resurrected, we're talking about something that has been dead, a person, a plan, a purpose, something has died. 7 (22m 38s): And we're here today to talk about the resurrection power of the Lord, Jesus Christ. As we talk about the resurrection of the person of the Lord, Jesus Christ, the historic person, Jesus Christ. We're also talking about the resurrection of the hope that he is. He is the hope of the world. He is absolutely the hope of the world. So we're talking about Jesus, who is our hope being resurrected from the dead, but we're also talking about the hope we can experience in light of the reality of Christ's resurrection. So hope is a noun and a verb. We have hope and we exercise hope. 7 (23m 19s): We have hope in the person and the work of the Lord, Jesus Christ. And we exercise hope. We put our hope in him. Those who know the Lord, we already have hope. And for those of you who are here today, and you don't know Jesus, if you're here, just kind of checking things out, you can know Jesus, you can choose hope today. Have you ever felt hopeless in your life? I felt that times, maybe my earliest memory of feeling hopeless was in 1980, in 1980, I was 11 years old and we were visiting friends in Ventura. And on the day that we were supposed to leave to come back to this area, my mom sent me off for a quart of milk at the storm. 7 (24m 5s): And so I go to the store. I find my way there. I get the milk and I've got a terrible sense of direction. So I come out the wrong door and I had the wrong direction. And I spend the next 12 hours looking for the place that I'm supposed to be returning to. The street that I was looking for was Amherst. The street that I thought I needed to be heading toward was I, I thought I was heading toward Ash. So if you look on a map, Ash street in Amhurst and Ventura is about four and a half miles apart. So I spent the day wandering, looking for the wrong place. I was looking for the wrong streets. 7 (24m 48s): And when did it occur to me that I could probably find my way back by remembering the store that I had gone to initially I began to have some hope. So I began to ask the question to people around me, Hey, how do you get to this market? I can't remember the name of the market now, but I began to ask, how do I get back to this market? And they said, are you sure you want to go to that market? That's like way across town. I said, no, that is that's the spot I need to get back to that market. And so over time I made my way back to the markets. And from there made my way to my friend's house, where we were staying. And 12 hours later, I made it home. And, but I was completely hopeless until I realized the direction that I needed to head. 7 (25m 32s): And once I had that direction, I just felt revitalized in my hope. And I, I knew that I was moving in the right direction and I knew eventually I would make it back to the place I started. How is hope resurrected in our lives? I believe hope is resurrected in our lives. And we have clarity about the direction of our lives when we're lacking clarity about the direction of our lives. We lack hope. We're not sure what tomorrow brings. We're not sure how to move forward. We're not sure who we are and what we're supposed to be about in this life. Especially given these last two years with COVID, it kind of wrecked the world and we're all kind of wondering and scratching our heads and trying to figure out how does this thing end. 7 (26m 14s): And here we are two years into it. And we're grateful that we can gather as a church, the people of God, people in the community on Easter service. But, but we, we, we, we needed in the midst of all that, to know somehow that this was going to come to an animal. We're so grateful that it's kind of wrapping up hope resurrected when Jesus was born and lives and was crucified and buried in that tomb, his followers were utterly hopeless. They had given everything away, they've sold everything. They had abandoned everything so that they might follow Jesus. 7 (26m 57s): Jesus would call them on the shores of the sea of Galilee. And they would say he was a common follow me. I will make you fishers of men. Like I'm going to change your whole life. Like, I don't want you to focus on what you've been focusing on up to this point. I want you to follow me and I will change your life. And even though Jesus had told them, listen, I'm going to die. And then on the third day, I will be resurrected. When it, it actually happened. His people were confused and lost and even angry. I would imagine. And just distraught at the reality that this Jesus that they gave everything for and were following for three years was dead. 7 (27m 40s): He was crucified unjustly, so and wrapped and put into a tomb. I mean, that's pretty final, right? It's, it's pretty final unless we're talking about God, unless we're talking about God. If we're talking about God, then nothing is final until God says it is final. When, when Jesus came out of that grave, hope was restored when they saw him. And the scripture says that 500 plus people saw him after his resurrection. It's a historical fact that Jesus resurrected from the dead, his disciples, his followers held on to that reality of that truth and gave their lives for the reality of that truth. 7 (28m 24s): They would not buckle. They would not change course because they knew that their savior had been resurrected from the dead. And so they gave their lives so that others might hear that message. Maybe you're here today and you don't know Jesus. Maybe you've never heard a gospel presentation. The gospel presentation is just Jesus. This is it's. This Jesus loves you. God, God lavish you. He's absolutely in love with you. And he wants to forgive your sins and welcome you into his family. He wants to bless your life and challenge you to follow him all the days of your life. I often say it like this. 7 (29m 5s): It's God has made it incredibly easy to walk in new life with him as a believer, as a follower of the Lord, Jesus Christ. But it's the hardest thing you'll ever do. As you follow him, the very, the rest of your life, his grace is a free gift, but walking after him is the hardest thing that you will ever have to do. But it's the thing in life that makes everything in life worthwhile. Maybe you're here today and you don't know who Jesus is. The good news is that you can know him and he wants to know you and he wants to come into your life. But who is this? Jesus let's understand first. 7 (29m 46s): Who is this? Jesus? Well, most people are familiar with the name. Jesus few people truly know who he is and knowing Jesus identity and his mission are important because there are ramifications that are eternal connected to what we know and what we believe about Jesus. The ramifications are eternal. It doesn't just touch this life. Although it touches this life, it touches all of eternity. So the best source of information about Jesus is in the Bible. And the Bible tells us that Jesus is God. 7 (30m 26s): He is not a God. He is the God. Someone say that Jesus was a good teacher. And I would agree with you, but he wasn't just a good teacher. He was the teacher, the very best teacher. He was a rabbi, but he wasn't just a rabbi. He was the eternal God. The magnificent one who has been there since, before the foundation of the earth. He's eternal. He's eternal. He's certainly not just to clear some things up. He's not the new age. Jesus. They just have a different perspective. New agers don't believe that Jesus has God all mighty. And the second person of the Trinity, rather new agers reduce Jesus to a mere man who attained spiritual enlightenment through a cultic activity and involvements new age G new agers reduce Jesus. 7 (31m 18s): And number him among the so-called masters. Like the Buddha who offer a way to offer a way. But Jesus said in John 14, six, he said, I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father except through me. So Jesus is not just a way. And if we think he's a way, then we're missing the point all together. He is actually the only way to the father. So he's not a Buddha. He's not an enlightened wan. He's not an enlightened master. He is God, some have said, he's a good man, but he's not just a good man. And honestly, he's probably not a good man. If we don't believe what he says about himself, if we don't believe that he is God and he is claiming to be God, then he's probably a lunatic. 7 (32m 4s): So we got to figure out what we believe about Jesus. He is God. And that's who he claims to be. He's fully God and fully man in the incarnation. He is not at all. He is here. This, he is not at all the spirit brother of Lucifer. That's not, that's not who Jesus is. You never married. And he never fathered children. He just never did those things. We need to read. The scripture. Charles Spurgeon wrote discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It's knowing the difference between rights and almost right. So we need to open up the scripture and understand who this Jesus is because it's the Jesus that we celebrate on Easter is the Jesus that we celebrate at Christmas. It's the Jesus. 7 (32m 45s): This Jesus, you came into the world so that we might have new life. He is eternal. He existed before his physical birth. And even before time began, he is the creator of everything that exists. He is the perfect reflection of the invisible God we see in Colossians one 15 through 17. It says Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is Supreme over all creation for through him. God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we cannot see such as Thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world, everything was created through him and for him. 7 (33m 32s): He existed before anything else. And he holds listen. He holds all creation together. Jesus is God. Jesus is the eternal king of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is God. He has the power to forgive sins. And his followers worshiped him. He, he is worthy of worship. Think about, think about this. The all-powerful eternal son of God, coming to earth as an infant. Imagine him lying in a manger, built with trees that he created. Imagine him under the stars that he created in flung into space. 7 (34m 17s): He's reduced to an infant child so that he might come and that we might know him and be saved through him. Scripture makes it clear that he was no ordinary baby. He's the savior of the world. The Bible declares that there's only one way to eternal life. And that is through faith in Jesus Christ. As savior acts four 12 says this salvation is found in no one else for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Jesus was given so that we might be saved. 7 (34m 57s): God is working in the world today. And I'm so thankful that idea, that reality should give us hope that he's Supreme over all things in the earth. He is working in the earth and he's always been working in the earth. He is working to bring us to himself by faith. Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen. It's the assurance of things we can not see. Hebrews 12 two says this through their faith. The people in days of old earned a good reputation through their faith, the people have days of older and a good reputation. So let's talk about a couple of people from days old. 7 (35m 37s): We're going to talk about Abraham and Sarah for a few minutes. So there's a guy in the Bible named Abraham and his wife's name is Sarah. When Abraham was 75 years old, the Lord made a promise to him at 75. The Lord said to him, this in Genesis 12 two, I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous. And you will be a blessing to others. So Abraham is like, okay, but there's a problem, Lord. There's a problem. It's all about impossible. You see I'm an old man. And my wife is barren. She can't have children. 7 (36m 19s): So it's an impossible word from the Lord. But listen, nothing is impossible with God. And when he declares something to be true, it will come to pass again. Abram's wife was barren. She wasn't able to have children. So where with this, where this nation come from, we read in Romans four 18. It says even when there was no reason for hope, have you been there even like, there was no reason for hope. Abraham kept hoping, believing that he would become the father of many nations for God had said to him, that was good enough for Abraham. God had said to him, that's how many descendants you will have. 7 (37m 2s): God's promise of children. Resurrected is hope. Because up to this point, 75 years old, he's got no descendants, nothing that a nation could be built around or be established through. He's got no descendants before then because of their age and inability to have children, they had no hope of children of a future, especially that type of future. But because they chose to believe God, they chose against all odds. They chose to believe God, their hope was resurrected. So number one hope is resurrected. When we choose to believe God against all odds, hope is resurrected. 7 (37m 45s): When we choose to believe God against all odds, where do you need to believe God against all odds in your life? Maybe you're up against a physical infirmity. That seems impossible. Maybe you're in a relationship that seems like it's going to and, and, and not well, where do you need the Lord to speak a word, a promise to you from his word, where do you need to be built up? Where do you need your hope resurrected? I've watched God heal people against all odds. We've seen it happen over and over again. I've watched God restore marriages against all odds. 7 (38m 26s): We've seen it happen over and over again. I graduated from college and grad school against all odds. If you know me, that's a miracle, right? That's a supernatural miracle, but it happened by God's grace. I've been married for 32 years to the same woman. That's a miracle. Again. If you know me, you know, that's a miracle. That's just, that should not have happened. I pastored the same church for 19 years against all odds. And we've watched God do wonderful and supernatural things. Hey Abraham, he waited 25 years for God's promised to come to pass. It's a long time. Sometimes we're in this waiting season where we we've heard something, we felt the Lord leading. 7 (39m 9s): We know that God has spoken and directed, but we've been in a season of waiting. This is God's emo. And he's what he does. He, he speaks and in the waiting, he builds us up in our faith. He challenges us to believe and to continue to hope in him and Romans four 19, it says, and Abraham's faith did not weaken. Even though at about a hundred years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead. And so was Sarah's womb. So now he's not 75, he's a hundred and still nothing, but he never wavered. He continued to believe God. 7 (39m 49s): Abraham kept believing God against all odds. Verse 20 says Abraham never wavered in believing God's promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger. Isn't that amazing? His faith grew stronger. And in this, he brought glory to God. Listen, if you wait in your season of waiting and believe God and allow your faith to grow stronger, you will, you will enjoy life more. You will honor the Lord. You will glorify God. And then you will get to see God do what he told you he would do. So open up the scripture and find out what the Lord has told you. 7 (40m 29s): He will do. And we're going to be talking about some of the promises of God here in just a moment. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises. Verse 21. Are you, are you fully convinced? I think we, we need to get there. As people, as believers, we need to be fully convinced that God is who he said. He, he is that Jesus is who he said he is. And that he is going to do what he said he would do. We needed to be fully convinced how hope is resurrected when we choose, we have to choose to believe God against all odds. And so it's not easy. It's not an easy thing to do, but by God's grace, if we, as we continue to look to him and believe him and put our faith in him, hope is resurrected. 7 (41m 10s): Hope is resurrected. When we choose to believe God against all odds. Number two hope is resurrected. And when we, when we keep our eyes on God and on his promises, I, I noticed in my life that when there's problems, that's where I'm focused. Like I'm, I'm focused on the problems instead of the one who can bring the solution to the problem we were thinking about this service. We've been thinking about it for months, planning on it for months and, and inevitably, no matter what is happening in the weather, there's always rain like right around, right around the time that we're supposed to gather as a church outside the, you know, the one time a year that we gather outside. And so yesterday or Friday, when I'm writing this portion of my message, it was Friday at 1:29 PM. 7 (41m 56s): And I'm looking at the weather for Saturday because we got out here early yesterday and spent the day setting up and there was a 60% chance of rain. And so we thought, well, we're just going to go for it. And we're just going to pray. And we're just going to believe that God will bring out the sun and part the clouds and allow us to meet. And that's precisely what he has done. We've we believed God and looked to him as the, whether he's the weatherman. He can change the weather. He can do whatever it is that he wants to do. Friday 1 29, 60% chance of rain yesterday. So there's rain in the, in the early, early morning hours, and then we're setting up and then it starts to sprinkle on us. And we're like, you know what? 7 (42m 36s): It doesn't matter. We're just going to keep going. We're just going to keep going. And by God's grace, we set it up. And here we are. The temptation again, is to get our eyes on the problem, the obstacle, the battle, the, the need in front of us. We, we focus on that when we really need to get our eyes on God, who is able to bring solutions for all of those things, we were worried about the weather. We, we didn't get a promise. We didn't get a promise from the Lord that the weather would be good, but we sense that this was the right direction for us. And so we moved in that direction. We believe God not having a promise that the weather would be good, but believing that if God has called us out here, then he would make it plausible for us to have an outdoor service. 7 (43m 23s): So we moved forward. He trusted God for good weather, listen and believing. God doesn't mean we don't have doubts. It means we move forward despite our doubts, because we're all filled with doubt at different times. Like we're hearing something, we're reading the scripture, we're trying to move forward, but we've got doubts and fears and anxieties. So faith having hope is it doesn't mean we don't experience those things, but we have the grace and the strength to move forward. In spite of those things, hope is resurrected. Hope is resurrected. When we choose to believe God against all odds. Number one, number two hope is resurrected. When we keep our eyes on God and on his promises. Now let's look at some of God's promises to people of faith. 7 (44m 8s): Romans 4 22 says. And because of Abraham's faith, God counted him as righteous to be righteous, just means to be in right. Standing with God is not a good idea to like be in right standing with the creator and the judge of the universe and be like, I want to be in right standing with him. But I know in my own ability, in my own strength, in my own works, I can never get there. But by God's grace, he's imputed righteousness to those who believe. And so because of God and his goodness and not because of me and my goodness, because God, in his goodness, not because of you in your goodness, he will impure righteousness. When we believe because of Abraham Abraham's faith, God counted him as righteous. 7 (44m 49s): So again, to be righteous, it's just to be in right standing with God. And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn't just for Abraham's benefit. It was recorded for our benefit to assuring us that God will also count us righteous. If we believe in him, the one who raised Jesus, our Lord from the dead. So, so what are we believing about God? Is it a belief that brings us humbly to a place of acknowledging our need for salvation, for the forgiveness of sins? What are we believing about Jesus? And are we believing in the right Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible. It's important that we understand Jesus from the context of the scripture that we have opened up the Bible and understand Jesus in light of scripture, Romans 4 25 says he, Jesus, he, Jesus was handed over to die because of our sins. 7 (45m 41s): And he was raised to life to make us right with God Romans five one, therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight, there's that word? Righteousness. Therefore, since we've been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God. So that is a promise. That's one of the promises that we can have as followers of the Lord. Jesus Christ. We can have peace. Now, if you've lived at all with any part of your life without peace, you w you really understand and value peace. A few years ago, I was really struggling with a lack of peace and I couldn't figure out what was going on in my life. I was, I just couldn't get happy. I couldn't get satisfied. He couldn't get fulfilled in, in any arena, Amy, any area of my life, I wanted to quit the ministry. 7 (46m 22s): I wanted to just do anything, but do what I was doing. I was just so unhappy. So my wife, with all of her wisdom, she said, Hey, do you have this symptom? And this symptom and this symptom and this symptom. And she went down a list of symptoms that she had downloaded from the internet. And I didn't realize, I thought, man, you've been paying close attention to my life. You know exactly what I'm going through. She said, no, these are just symptoms of depression. She said, I think you're depressed. I'm like, yeah, I think you're right. And so with some therapy and some prayer and some I'm medicated by the way. 7 (47m 4s): So little medication never hurt anybody, but I was able to get back to a place where I could put the full weight of my trust in God and believe him, there was something chemically going on in me. That was hindering me from doing that. So through the wisdom of my wife and doctors, I began to discover what was going on in and by God's grace, by God's grace. The hope of God, the peace of God, the grace of God just began to flow through my life. Once again, therefore, since we've been made right in God's sight, we've been made righteous by faith. We have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 7 (47m 44s): Listen, I don't care how many meds you're on. If you don't know Jesus as your Lord, you'll never have peace meds. Don't equal peace. It might be meds. Plus Jesus equals peace in my case, but you need Jesus. That's the, you need Jesus. And God is faithful to meet you and, and fill you with hope and to fill you with peace because of our faith. Christ has brought us into a place of undeserved privilege. That's another promise undeserved privilege. What does that look like? Well, we've been saved by his grace and adopted into his family when we, by faith, trust him. So we get actually adopted into his family. That's undeserved privilege where kids of the king, where we now stand and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory. 7 (48m 29s): We understand where we're going. When it's all said and done, those are some of the promises of God. So number one, hope is resurrected. When we choose to believe God, it gets to all odds. Number two hope is resurrected. When we keep our eyes on God and on his promises. And number three, as we get ready to wrap up here, hope is resurrected. When we believe we are made right with God, by faith, maybe you're hearing you're wrestling. Cause you know, you're not right with God. If you will believe by faith and put your trust in God, you can have that sense of security. That sense of peace. That sense of joy, knowing that you're made right with God, Jesus was born. He lived, he died in resin, resurrected from the dead. 7 (49m 10s): So we might have new life so that we might be right with God so that we might have peace so that we can confidently enjoy fully, look forward to sharing God's glory. Whatever has you feeling hopeless God by his grace and goodness can resurrect your hope. Choose to believe God against all odds. Keep your eyes on God. And his promises believe that you can be made right with God by faith. No matter what you've done, no matter what you have done. If you, if you do these things, God will resurrect your hope. When Jesus died and was buried, his followers lost all hope. 7 (49m 54s): When Jesus resurrected, he restored their hope, their purpose and their joy. When I was lost as an 11 year old boy, my hope was restored. When I finally remembered where I needed to go, Jesus is calling you home. He's calling us home. What will you do with that invitation? That opportunity? Well, I want you to go ahead and stand and I'm going to pray you. And as we get ready to wrap up the service with some more prayer and song, I just want to invite you to do something with this invitation to receive the grace and the mercy of the Lord. 7 (50m 41s): Jesus Christ. Maybe you've heard the message over and over again. Maybe you've heard it here. You've heard it. Other places. Maybe you've been told the message, the gospel that Jesus loves you, that he died for you. That you might have new life in him. If you're here today and you want to say yes to Jesus, I just want you to pray this prayer and the quietness of your heart. You say, Jesus, I need you. Jesus. I welcome you into my life. Lord. I want you to be Lord and king and ruler of my life. I need you to forgive my sins. I need you to come into my life. And as you by faith, declare that prayer to the Lord, God hears. 7 (51m 22s): And he responds. He welcomes you into his family and he gives you new purpose for your life. It gives you new purpose, new identity, and he calls you like he called the original 12 common and follow me. That means you're gonna look at your life completely different from now on. You're going to be looking at your life through the lens, this lens. I'm a follower of the Lord. Jesus Christ in my life is for him. If you've done that today, at some point after the service, if you've given your life to the Lord today, at some point after the service, I'm going to direct you over to the baptism tent. Not so that you can get baptized necessarily, but we've got a, we've got a new believers bag of information for you. 7 (52m 5s): But if you like to get baptized, as Jeremy said earlier, we've got t-shirts and shorts and towels that you can have, and we'll baptize you over there. So as we wrap up this part of the service, the band will be leading us. The band will be leading us. And as the band is leading us in worship, we're going to begin to assemble over there for those who want to be baptized and so make your way over there. And then the baptism will actually be on the screen as well. So Lord, with that, we just invite you. We invite you. We invite your presence. We thank you, Lord. We thank you for your goodness. Thank you for what you're doing. Lord in Jesus name. 7 (52m 47s): If you would like to receive prayer, there's, there'd be people over there ready to pray for you as well. People who love Jesus and who will love on you. So if you'd like to get prayer, receive a new believers pack. If you like to get baptized, head over there as we sing this last song. Amen. Let's worship. 9 (53m 7s): Let's sing this together. 6 (54m 42s): Yeah. Strange. His name is one It's a dome that you hoppy trouble. Hold your head up high. Don't feel the Big guys. 6 (55m 24s): 2 (1h 0m 12s): We To the Virgin came though. to that stone was moved forward for the land who was Yes, we magnify Jesus. 2 (1h 13m 46s): This song is a thousand hot and 9 (1h 14m 2s): Thank you Jesus so much for just a beautiful Easter Sunday morning, Lord. Thank you that you are saving us. Thank you that you sent your son Jesus to die a horrible death on the cross so that we could be right with you so we can have forgiveness of our sins. Lord, thank you for the resurrection. Thank you. That you're resurrecting hope in us today. And I just pray that as we go, would you just, would you just do that in, in hearts and minds today? Lord, in our communities and our families, Lord, would you be resurrecting hope where there might not be any? So we thank you for all this in Jesus name, we pray. Amen. 11 (1h 14m 47s): All right. Thank you all for joining us today. Happy Easter. Before you go, we have a for birth to four year olds and five to 10 year olds over here to your left. So be sure to head over there. Abraham pleaded with God to allow the blessing to go to Ismael first, but God refused and so Abraham agreed and blessed Isaac…
One can never fully understand Abraham at all without seeing him not only encountering the gospel but encountering Jesus himself.Abraham: The faith of Abraham is the basis for our faith today. To study Abraham is to study the life of faith. James refers to Abraham as “God's friend” a title used of no one else in Scripture. In this four – week series, Dr. Neufeld unpacks the significance of Abraham's life of faith and its importance in laying a foundation for Gods people to follow.
