Mr. Lazarus discusses how this is likely not feasible, since this would mean amending the Constitution. Instead, he proposes the elimination of the "winner take all electoral votes" in those states that have this pattern. Instead, he proposes that all electoral votes be counted for whichever candidate has them. This is true only for a few states now. Emma speaks with Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his reporting from the Democratic National Convention. First, Emma runs through updates on continuing massacres in Gaza, Israel's conflict with Hezbollah, Russia's massive barrage on Ukraine, RFK's candidacy, Jack Smith's case against Trump, fascist disenfranchisement in Texas and Georgia, the UAW, Macron's refusal to name a left-wing PM, Kroger's anti-trust trial, gun violence, and labor action among Canada's freight rails, also touching on the DNC's superspreader status and Trump's attempt to set the rules for the next debate. Alex Sammon then joins, diving right into his review of the four-day-long corporate-sponsored PR convention that was the DNC, and its rejection of the most pressing critiques of the party platform from pro-Palestinian delegates. Expanding on this, Sammon walks through his experience at a self-proclaimed “Zioness” party, a pro-gressive, pro-zionist, and pro-Kamala event, including the advertised speakers (including Senate and Congressional members), none of whom showed, and its incredibly brash yet seemingly ruminative discussion of Israel (no mention of Palestine, of course). After tackling some of the major attendees that did make the event – including Mondaire Jones and Van Jones – Sammon parses through the rhetoric that dominated the event, with little discussion of campaign spending or ongoing lobbying efforts, and a whole lot of talking about how good that Biden administration was for Israel and how great it would be if that continued, often with the implication that such a continuation should not be expected. Sammon wraps up the interview by running through his major conclusions from the event, before Emma covers some major (and majorly concerning) disenfranchisement efforts coming out of Nebraska and Georgia. And in the Fun Half: Emma parses through some devastating and disturbing stories coming out of Gaza, including the effects of constant stress on Palestinian children, and Israel's lionization of the IDF's most infamous rapist. The hypocricy of the university leaders is obvious, in that they do not support freedom of speech. But it's time to recognize that we are at war. It is, for now at least, a war being conducted almost entirely inside the media world, and here's a prayer that it stays contained within those walls. But if it is, the forces of democracy need all the fighters we can find. And Stewart - who has been mad at me since 2003 and once accused me of "stealing his act" - going back to host The Daily Show at least once a week and be the Executive Producer all the other days, at least through the election, is welcomed news. For that matter, I hope it inspires Maddow - who has been mad at me since 2011 - to be on the air more often at MSNBC. Meanwhile, I have had absolutely enough of "5 Takeaways From The New Hampshire Primary." Not only is the premise hackneyed, but The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, CNN, The Hill, and Agence France Presse all used EXACTLY THAT TITLE for their versions. And all of them left out the real takeaways: Trump needed to pretend to be a human being and instead lashed out in a rage against Nikki Haley that is now continuing into a third day and last night extended to Trump threatening to "ban" from MAGA anybody who contributes to her campaign (sure - he won't take somebody else's money; his least convincing lie yet). His fuse is completely gone. He also has now claimed he defeated the sitting governor of Iowa, I guess in the primary there, and near as I can find no sitting governor of Iowa has sought the Republican presidential nomination since 1912 so maybe whatever he has, has just moved into the tertiary stage. Plus: CNN's shame. Its 10 PM the anchor - the one it preempts once a week to instead run Charles Barkley - condescendingly parroted the right wing talking point that nobody in America wants Joe Biden. She should be fired, but given her ratings, they can do something worse to her: force her to continue doing her show. B-Block (25:04) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Frank Farian, the evil genius behind "Milli Vanilli," is dead. Until I read his obituary, I had NO idea that the scam came apart when a record skipped... in BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT. NewsNation is not satisfied with you not watching it on TV. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Lauren Kirchner, investigative reporter at Consumer Reports, to discuss her recent reporting on the chemicals known as PFAS. Then, Sam's joined by Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss his recent piece entitled "Want to Stare Into the Republican Soul in 2023?". Sam kicks off the show and reacts to yet another bombshell piece of reporting from ProPublica on Samuel Alito's previously undisclosed fishing trip to Alaska with hedge fund billionaire Peter Singer. The only difference is, this one came with a prebuttal Op-Ed from Justice Alito himself in the form of a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed. Then, Lauren joins the show to discuss the multi-district lawsuit involving PFAS, the "forever chemicals" that are used for non-stick purposes like Teflon and ScotchGard, and how the lawsuit is geared towards firefighting foam that has PFAS as its main ingredients, and that it's ultimately seeped into soil and drinking water. They then go into the origin of the phrase "forever chemicals", as well as one of the more notable litigation efforts against the usage of PFAS, as was the case in Ohio involving Dupont and the Teflon manufacturer 3M that was ultimately adapted into the film "Dirty Waters." Sam asks about EPA rule-making when it comes to PFAS, what the history of that has been, and what is being done now by Biden's EPA to limit the usage of PFAS. After diving into some more of the particulars of the current multi-district lawsuit, they finally dive into the history of the development of PFAS in the 1970's, and how 3M got involved with mainstreaming it, before 3M ultimately had to reveal to the EPA that a large majority of the population has PFAS within their bloodstream due to air and consumption exposure (even newborn babies are born with PFAS in their bloodstream!). Then, Alex joins the show to discuss his recent visit to a huge car dealer conference in Texas, the insane profit margins that car dealers have experienced especially since COVID started, and how they are underrated in how singular their political influence is in electoral politics, especially in Republican politics. Alex and Sam then discuss the unique campaign finance gambits that Ron DeSantis is engaging in with his presidential campaign and his "Never Back Down" Super PAC, and whether it's really "legal" or not. Emma hosts Adrian Hon, game designer and CEO of Six to Start, to discuss his recent book You've Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All. Then, she is joined by Alex Sammon, politics writer at Slate, to discuss the recent controversy surrounding New York Governor Kathy Hochul's nomination of Judge Hector LaSalle to New York's highest court.  Emma begins by running through updates on the debt ceiling's summer showdown, election deniers overtaking the house oversight committee, and Hochul's Chief Judgeship nomination failing to make it through the state senate judiciary committee, before diving into Joe Manchin's recent appearance at the Davos economic forum as he calls out the debt ceiling while completely ignoring the biggest counterweight to government spending (taxes). Adrian Hon then joins as he dives into what “gamification” entails, with the application of game design in non-game circumstances, be it in education, fitness, labor, or whatever, creating a hyper-monitored system of achievements and failure. Parsing through the impact of the “gamification” of the world of labor, Adrian and Emma walk through the major changes we've seen alongside it, including an increased level of surveillance and performance feedback coming in the form of intra-workplace competition, and how this allows employers to set up unachievable “goals” for employees to push their labor while avoiding appropriate compensation. After a brief conversation on the relationship between the “gamification” of labor and the gig economy, Hon walks through the evolution of apps in the 2000s and early 2010s that opened up society so fully to gamification, emphasizing arbitrary achievements as proof of value in a perversion of the already corrupt meritocracy we supposedly live it. They wrap up the interview by focusing on a specific realm of “gamified” labor in the trucking industry, as they analyze how gamification and decades of dwindling labor leverage reinforced the increasing insecurity and decreasing solidarity in the workplace, and explore why these arbitrary systems of tracking achievement don't serve to increase the effectiveness of the institution it's serving. Alex Sammon and Emma then dive deep into the story behind Gov. Kathy Hochul's floundering nomination for Chief Judge of the NY Court of Appeals, walking through how he came to be her first choice, why there was immediate pushback to such a selection, and how Hochul could possibly have seen this as an important fight when it undermines not only her constituents but her own party, before wrapping up with an assessment of Hakeem Jeffries hopping on Hochul's bandwagon despite this court being the very reason his party lost control of the House. This gave him an intimate view of these centers, which have been cropping up across the US since the GOP's realization that they actually are not THAT far behind in polling with communities of color, and that just bringing around certain communities in certain states can have massive dividends, as they shift to a grassroots movement that is reminiscent of left-wing organizing that focuses on meeting community needs. Sammon then dives specifically into his experiences at the community center in Robeson, North Carolina, a historically blue district in a supposedly blue state, and how the GOP took advantage of growing racial tensions between Native and Black populations alongside an economic collapse in the wake of the NAFTA replacement, as he explores the complete swap between organizing tactics of the GOP and Democrats, as the former shifts to a ground game, with these community centers offering daily programming with a clear association to the right, whereas democrats have chosen to go after airplay in districts where myriad people have no internet access. They wrap up their discussion by touching on what this says about the complete failures of Democratic messaging under Biden. Next, Emma is joined by Joe Eskenazi in reaction to the successful recall of Chesa Boudin, San Francisco's reform-focused DA, and the complete lack of surprise around the result. Next, he looks to flesh out the dynamics that were working behind the scenes, with the wealthier enclaves of the city, alongside real estate investment and a big SF PAC, and why, no matter how important it is, following the money is not a tangible electoral tactic, just as confronting emotions with statistics (e.g. no, SF does NOT have a crime wave) is unsuccessful when the wealthy constituency believes to the heart in the antisocial behavior of the poorer communities. They wrap up the interview by diving deeper into Boudin's relationship (or lack thereof) with the SFPD, walking through the obvious refusal to work (whether a work stoppage, underperformance, or both) for his office, why this is so common in relationships between Police forces and their governing officials,  how Mayor London Breed took advantage of this and used Boudin as her scapegoat, and what the conversation around San Franciscan politics should look like moving forwards. Emma hosts Alex Sammon, staff writer at The American Prospect, to discuss his recent piece in the New Republic "IKEA's Race for the Last of Europe's Old-Growth Forest." Alex dives right into his surprisingly high-risk coverage of the rampant illegal deforestation going on in Europe's last old-growth forest in Romania, first situating his research within stories relayed to him a few years ago regarding the multiple murders of forest rangers in the region, and countless recorded assaults of folks documenting the illegal logging. Next, he and Emma jump back to 1989 and the fall of the USSR, as Romania, alongside many other countries, was opened up to neoliberalism and expansive privatization, with the Harvard University endowment jumping on the opportunity and (illegally) buying up a majority of land in the post-communist country, before selling it off to Ikea to dump the legal battles. They then accelerate to Romania's acceptance to the EU in the oughts, which provided a perfect example of the contradictions of the union when it came to deforestation, as the increased neoliberalization and bolstering of the privatized regimes ramped up the logging, while the developing environmental “pledges” centered the forest as a key ecosystem. This finally brings us to the last decade and a half, as Alex takes on the facade of regulation offered by environmental Non-Governmental Organizations in the region, and walks through the myriad steps of the supply chain, all of which helps Ikea to obscure the illicit activities along each step of the way. Of course, this is further supported by a complete lack of regulatory capacities in the forest itself – resulting in a majority of wood from the region being produced by illegal logging – and the countless stories of violence, from full murder to attempted assault, which all make cracking down on the deforestation incredibly difficult. They wrap up the interview by looking at the future of the furniture industry, as production is expected to ramp up, and Ikea completely vacating the Russian market putting even more pressure on Romania's forest. Emma also covers the incredibly devastating developments in Texas as the state begins investigating parents for providing gender-affirming care for their trans children, diving into the stories of actual trans children and their families, and the fear and anxiety that has suddenly been forced on them, before they touch on updates in Ukraine, as deaths continue to mount, and briefly explores stories of anti-war protestors in Russia and the inhumanity involved in blanket blaming citizens for the horrors of their government. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt and Brandon as they take on the incredibly unsurprising attack on Biden and the defund movement by the right, just days after Biden himself tried to do the same thing. Phil from the Chicago suburbs calls in to chat about the mineral industry and the domestic Russian politics that might be slowing down their invasion, Ron DeSantis yells at high schoolers for their PC theater, Alex from NYC talks school choice, and Brandon one-ups Ben Shapiro on pointless political analogies. It is a defensive stance against the Republicans. The Republicans, on the other hand, push their strategic goals, using whatever tactical means available.Pedro Paulo Zahluth Bastos, Political Economist at UNICAMP in Brazil, says that President Bolsonaro is setting the stage for a coup to remain in power. Borrowing from Trump's playbook, Bolsonaro is sowing doubt about Brazil's highly-prized electronic voting system, undermining confidence in the Supreme Court, democratic institutions and the media. Bolsonaro has also borrowed the Republican stance on the pandemic and vaccinations, with catastrophic results for Brazil. Overall Bolsonaro's approval ratings have sunk, but he remains popular among the poor and ever-growing evangelical movement, despite his extreme authoritarian proto-fascist politics. I discuss how the majority of the posters were POC and how it ties to the thought that POC are the most impacted by OD fees, as the glitch was an overdraft refund from the stimmy deposits of a month prior. Instead of debiting any fees back, it just credited them multiple times over. I also talk about how Bank of America never mentioned there was a glitch on social media, in a press release or in phone calls to clients. I also discuss the ramifications of spending that money that wasn't yours and how it could lead to permanent ban from banking along with potential criminal charges.
