Well hey there and hello again to ya. Welcome back to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show.  Created for You Freebies at JanLBurt.com The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises Devotional on Amazon Let's go ahead and get started. God's got good for you, and I am hopeful that this episode will remind you of that, no matter what kind of stuff life is throwing at you today.   You're listening to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show podcast, blessed to be part of the ministry of the Edifi app. That's EDIFI, and you can find it in your app store. And if the show blesses or encourages you, I'd like to formally invite you to subscribe. This is episode number 203. Today I am going to read a bunch of Bible verses to you and let the promises of God sink into your heart and also into your mind (because when the word of God gets into our mind, it literally  changes the way that we think and that, my friend, changes the way that we live). And I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to prepare you right now, before I even quote one single verse, to ready you and prepare you to believe His amazing promises to you so that you can live from here on out like they are taking place, being accomplished, in your life. Live like His promises to you are true.   Because they are! God keeps all of His promises so I want to encourage you today to live like you know He is keeping all of His promises to you. To your family. And to His people all over the world.    Okay, so let's dive into God's Word and get some encouraging news in our ears, and into our thoughts, shall we?    First let's start with some powerful and hopeful words that Jesus spoke. I am quoting the NLT for today's podcast & let's look at Mark 12:27 - Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”    Okay - this is where we are going to begin. It is so, so important to remember, when we are making the big bold decision to really, truly believe God's promises - to live a believing life - that we don't base our belief on anything other than the Lord. We don't search out something in addition to Him in order to increase our faith. We aren't mustering up more faith by trying to make ourselves have more faith. Rather, we are relying fully on Him. And we are simply deciding that we will believe what the Bible says to us. And so, this verse is just a great reminder that you don't have to make God's promises work out in your life, in your kid's lives, etc. Nope. The pressure isn't on you to make happen what God has promised. But so often we live as if the pressure is on us, somehow, to do what is impossible for us. Only God is God, and only He can keep the promises He makes. Now only you can live by faith, believing God. But you and I have no ability or power to make it happen. We cannot get it done. But what we can get done is choose to believe Him, to take Him at His word, and to abide in Him moment by moment, even while we are expecting to see His promises fulfilled.    There are actually many, many things in this life that are impossible - for mankind. For humans. For wives and for moms and for employees and so on. Humanly speaking, there is gonna be stuff that is just not possible. But not with God! Aren't these words from Jesus incredible?  Think for just a moment about what our Savior is actually saying to us. But not with God. EVERYTHING is possible with God.   So bring God into everything, then! Never intentionally leave Him out of anything. You want the God who turns the impossible into the possible  - you want that God doing all the things in your life, right?    Get a sense of Jesus, today, looking at you intently and reminding you, firmly but with great love and compassion, that it isn't about mankind's ability to make this thing fly. Because  is is God and God alone who makes everything possible.    Psalm 37:23 (NLT) says this - The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.   Okay, this is a great verse! What hope it provides! What assurance! This is quite a promise! He is promising that He will direct your steps. And guess what? You can pray this verse over your loved ones, your co-workers, your spouse, your aging parents, your neighbors. And also, pray this over yourself.    Lord, please do as You have said in Your word and direct my steps. Lord, delight in every detail of my life.   Lord, direct my steps. I know my righteousness and any godliness within me is thanks to Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit. So Father, bless me and direct each step that I take. Stop me when I am near a misstep. Thank You for this promise of Your guidance and direction over my life, from now until my last breath.    It says that He delights in every detail of our lives. So guess what that means for us? How does that relate to us living in total belief that God's promises for us are absolutely true and are being realized on the daily? Well, take every little and every big detail of your life to God in prayer. You can do that! You should do that! He cares so much - talk to Him.Talk to Him often. Like, talk to God a lot! All of the time. And remember, and keep on remembering, He delights, not tolerates or endures or notices, but delights in every detail of your life. You are not just barely tolerable. No, to the contrary, you are one in whom God takes great delight.    Oh this is a great promise. And a great prayer verse too. Quick side note here - anybody else feel kind of like we need to ramp up our praying? Just have that sense that we need to spend more time talking to the Lord, time in prayer by ourselves and maybe with others, too.  If you feel that way too, listen to the Lord as to what He is calling you to. And keep track of, write down, memorize, put in your phone verses that you can have at the ready at any moment to pray. That's just a little tip that comes in handy, having some verses saved to a note on your phone so that you can open it and start praying those verses at any time, it can be helpful to have that at hand. And maybe open that note and pray those verses rather than scroll when you have ten minutes to spare. Just a thought!  Praying God's promises is really amazing. Like, this will leave you amazed again and again. So, that's my side note. Just keep seeking to be part of whatever He is doing, where He is moving. And hey, prayer is always always a good thing, is it not?    (And maybe take a look at what it says in Habakkuk 2:3 - that is an awesome verse to start a prayer time with. I encourage you to look it up but I will read it to you from the Amplified right now - For the vision is yet for the appointed (future) time; it hurries toward the goal (or fulfillment); it will not fail. Even though it delays, wati (patiently) for it, because it will certainly come; it will not delay.)  He is always moving, and even when it seems like there is a delay, which there is at times according to the verse I just read from Habakkuk, don't lose heart. Hang your hope on the Lord who always does as He has promised, and don't unhang your hope when the wait gets long.    Okay, so this next verse is one that I think some people might feel like they just cannot seem to fully believe for themselves. Like, this isn't going to be true for me. If you've ever thought like that, let me encourage you. I am hopeful that you and I can today believe this verse for our very own situations.   Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT) says - So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.   A lot in that verse. First, God says to be strong and courageous and that sentence ends with an exclamation point. Now there weren't exactly punctuation marks in the original Hebrew, right? But the translation into modern English gives us the exclamation point so that we grasp God's meaning in this verse. The punctuation reminds us of the importance - it's to garner our attention, to make sure we're listening and reading what God has said in His word.  So - let's just do what He says to do! Be strong. Be courageous. Exclamation point. I am guessing you have one or more parts of your life right now, at this point in time, where you can apply this. So go ahead and apply it. Be strong. Be courageous. How? By resting in the Lord and knowing that He is going to keep His word.    Don't be afraid. Think on Jesus and the fear dissipates, really it does! Do not panic before them, it says. Well “them” of course refers to their enemies. Don't panic before your enemy.    And here is the reason why you don't need to be afraid, don't panic, but instead be strong and courageous. For the Lord your God WILL PERSONALLY go ahead of you.  This is profound to think about, and yet it is absolutely true.    When God says He WILL do something, He most assuredly will. You just be about the business of believing He will do all He has promised to do. Let Him be about the actual doing of it.    He will personally go ahead of you. How's that for a promise that can give you some big time faith?    And the verse ends with this - He will neither fail you nor abandon you. I'm going to say that once more - He will neither fail you nor abandon you.  He won't. That's that.   I've got a couple more verses to share with you today. And I am believing they are encouraging to you and will have you just believing by the end of this episode. If not, hey, you can listen again. Let that faith grow in you and believe more and more every single day - trust God more than the news, more than fear, more than anything. Right?   Revelation 21:4 (NLT)  - He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying of pain. All these things are gone forever.   This is such a wonderful verse for us. I'm not going to mention anything specific today - but we are living in a very tumultuous era. I'm going to say this about our current season in the history of the world: I believe we are living in the end times, the last days. And I say that based on what the Bible teaches us about how things will look in the end times. Now, many Christians will say that we have fifty or a hundred years until Jesus' return. I don't think that is possible, because it does not make sense based on what the Bible tells us the last days will be like. Let me explain what I mean - we know that in the last days no one will be able to buy or sell unless they take the mark of the beast, the mark on their hand and/or forehead. You've heard this before, I'm pretty sure. You can read about it in Revelation chapter 13, I think verses 16 through 18 specifically. A hundred years ago, was there a way for a mark to be put in your hand or in your forehead that would prevent you from buying or selling? Well, not really. How about fifty years ago? Not really. The answer is, no. It wasn't possible. How about even 25 years ago? Back in 2000? Getting closer, but the tech wasn't quite there.   So here's some food for thought. If fifty, a hundred, or even just twenty five years ago the tech wasn't ready for the mark of the beast to be implemented, and then if we just ponder the last five years or so, the changes in the tech world. It's astounding how much has changed in a handful of years. So, at the pace technology is changing and advancing, and I can tell you in my limited experience with just the podcast industry and social media, it changes so fast, a month ago things were different with some of the apps and things I use. It's quick change after quick change, all day long, right? So how does that work if we have fifty or a hundred years yet to go? Won't the tech outpace the end times at this rate? Like, we cannot fathom what technology will be capable of in fifty or a hundred years. But right now, we can fathom the mark of the beast for buying or selling, and the tech, it would work. We're right on the cusp of this being a possible and plausible reality. Since this is what we were forewarned of by Jesus Himself in the book of Revelation, is it wise to tell ourselves or to preach to others that we've got decades of quote/unquote safe time before it all happens as the Bible says? Or is it far wiser to say, hey, per the words of Jesus, we're just about to this point technology wise. It's coming, and it's not going to be in five or ten decades…because at that point, the tech would have outpaced the very word of God, the prophetic aspects of the end times, and that, we know, cannot and will not happen.    So today, this moment, is the time for you to consider Revelation 21 verse 4. Let me read it once more. Revelation 21:4 (NLT)  - He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying of pain. All these things are gone forever.   This verse is a balm for those who know Jesus. It's key. It's mission critical to remember there is a day coming when all the tears will stop. And that day is nearly here. No more death or sorrow or crying or pain. Gone forever. I don't even need to say more about this verse, this promise from Revelation, except that it is for those who know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. If you don't, you are welcome to email me at JanLBurt@outlook.com and I will reply. It's so important to know Him, not know of Him, not just attend church, but really know Him. Not talking religion here. But true relationship with the Son of God, Jesus. I really do welcome you to contact me. Totally confidential and non judgmental. Just offering Jesus and how to have Him as your best friend forever.    Last verse today - Luke 1:37 (NLT) For the word of God will never fail.   Short and sweet. Doesn't need explaining. No need for commentary. Just know that this is absolute and unchanging truth.    For the word of the Lord will never fail.   Anybody else need to know that today?   Take that thing, big and scary, and hold it up next to this verse, Luke 1:37. Does one seem bigger and one much smaller?    For the word of the Lord will - never - fail.   It won't. It just flat out will not fail. Never, no never.   Lord bless you today. I have prayed for you, all who listen to this episode, and I am going to continue to pray for you.    Live a life sold out for Jesus, believing all of His promises, and just see what God might do in and through a life lived like that.    Find me via my website JanLBurt.com and grab any one of the free items I've got on the home page-  and I have a book, a devotional, available on Amazon - The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises - with verses that have the word “WILL” in them. In this episode from the vault, Jan shares several verses from God's Word along with an important reminder that God is in the promise keeping business, and He has every intention of keeping His Word to you. Happy Listening! #FromTheVault Take the quiz "Which of God's Promises is for You?" via this LINK.         Today I am going to read a bunch of Bible verses to you and let the promises of God sink into your heart, into your mind (which changes the way that we think and that, my friend, changes the way that we live).   God keeps all of His promises so I want to encourage you today to live like you know He is keeping all of His promises to you. To your family. To your local church. To the church all around the globe.    Okay, so let's dive into God's Word and get some encouraging news in our ears, in our thoughts, shall we?    First let's start with some powerful and hopeful words that Jesus spoke. I am quoting the NLT for today's podcast & let's look at Mark 12:27 - Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. And remember, keep on remembering, He delights, not tolerates or endures or notices, but delights in every detail.    Oh this is a great promise. And a great prayer verse too.   Quick side note here - anybody else feel kind of like we are on the verge of just a huge prayer event in the West? Like people are going to start praying individually, as married couples, families, in small groups, church settings, at work, on college campuses, gathering among neighbors - online even. To pray. I have a sense this is on the horizon. If you feel that way too, listen to the Lord as to what He is calling you to do as part of that, I guess prayer movement you might call it? And keep track of, write down, memorize, put in your phone verses that you can have at the ready at any moment to pray. Praying God's promises is really amazing. Like, will leave you amazed again and again.   Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT) says - So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.   A lot in that verse. There are "stories" and then there are STORIES. My friend Daniel Mangena has a one-of-a-kind story to share with HR Hardball. Dan has seen multiple highs, and the very lowest of the lows. This is a guy who at one point was studying on how to better execute a successful suicide (that comes around minute twenty.) Now? Well, now Dan helps others realize the abundances in life of which they are worthy. Changing the inputs, changing our self-dialogue, creating habits and patterns that bring about a healthy and positive lifestyle. For many, the tragedy of this pandemic is the damage to their ability to think rationally. With a constant onslaught of negative messaging and fear-mongering from a corrupt media industry, many have succumbed and surrendered. When fear is framing your life, you lose perspective, compassion, trust, and ultimately a sound mind. We don't subscribe to that mindset at HR Hardball, and neither does Daniel Mangena - get your ears on and listen to some real conversation about mandates, vaccines, media messaging and an overly authoritarian government (not just in the US, check out Austria, Australia, France, Germany, Italy and Canada). We (you & I) are in the fight of our lives. This is episode 76 of The Burt Not Ernie Show podcast - and I am so excited because it is the week of September 30th - and that is International Podcast Day. And this little podcast is featured on Podchaser as one of the Top Christian Podcasts to listen to for International Podcast Day. How cool is that?   Today for this episode we are going to read some verses with promises that we can pray for ourselves and of course for pretty much everyone who may be on our prayer lists.  Sometimes we aren't exactly sure what to pray, how to pray, in a certain situation or for a certain person. And it's really kind of handy, or actually it's pretty important, to have some verses from the Bible sort of at the ready to pray for those people and situations. So that's the focus of these verses today.    And hey, in case nobody let you know this as of late, God truly loves you. And He truly likes you. When you spend time with Him, He actually enjoys it. You're pretty awesome. And I can say that because it's true - and it's true because God proves it to be true. Enjoy your life today. God loves you and He wants you to enjoy it - not down the road, but right here and now. Enjoy your life. You're allowed to do that, ya know!   Let's anchor our hope in the Lord to our praying by really believing His promises are true.    Romans 4:21b - … being fully persuaded that God had power to do what He had promised. (That's the second half of the verse, and I believe that is from the NLT - it's a good thing to ask ourselves if we are fully persuaded that God had the power to do what He has promised when we enter our prayer times. Do we believe it? If so, fantastic! Pray like you believe that this is true every time you come to the Lord in prayer.)   2 Kings 19:16a - Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see. (Ask Him to hear you as you stand praying. Ask Him to see you, to see your circumstances and to do a great work that glorifies Him in the midst of those circumstances.)    John 17:15 - “My prayer is not that You take them out of the world, but that You protect them from the evil one.” (Jesus did not ask the Father to take you out of this world. Sometimes we want out of it! It kinda sucks down here on earth sometimes, right? But we cannot be wanting or praying for something in direct contrast to what Jesus' revealed will is. And this verse says His will is for us not to be taken out of this world. But to be protected from the evil one. Pray as if you trust your Father to protect you from the evil one as you do His will in this world. And pray the same thing over your families and friends and workplaces and finances and health and churches and believers all around the world. Pray like this is your promise and you will find yourself far less afraid of the dirty old devil!)    Psalm 18:28b - The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Do you have any areas of your life where maybe you don't feel like you can see clearly? Any dark spots? Like those annoying floaters in our vision, ya know, but in our life? Ask your good and faithful and loving and so trustworthy God to enlighten those places. And He really will!) This verse has the word WILL in it - okay, gotta reiterate this like pretty much whenever I can. Will means will and All means all and my God don't play. He will do every single bit of what He has said that He will do.   Romans 8:31 NLT - If God is for us, who can ever be against us? (I am hopeful that on my rough days I will always remember this verse, this promise. Who is for us? Who is for me - for me?? God, that's who. God is for you. So who can ever be against us? This puts things into their proper perspective, my friend. It's all small potatoes compared to our God. Anything coming up against you is also coming against Him and there is nothing that can stand against your God. Keep your eyes on the prize always and the prize is Jesus. Keep Him as your focus and all else shrinks down to size. He is for you. Please don't ever forget that!)    And just one more verse I want to share with you today - it is from the book of Isaish. Chapter 40, verse 10 and it is from the NIV - It says: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.    That is a whopper of a promise. Combine this promise, actually a few promises here in this verse, with your praying and you are not going to end your prayer time the same as when you started. Try it and see!    Lord, thank You that no matter what, You have given me instruction not to fear, and so I will not fear. I choose faith, I shut down fear, I trust in You fully & absolutely. I will not fear because You, my God, are with me. Always with me. You will never leave me nor forsake me. So of course I do not need to fear - I am never alone, the God of heaven's armies is with me always. Thank You for this promise and for an answer to the fears that try to press in upon me. You have told me not to be dismayed, and so I will do as You have told me and will not be dismayed. Why? Because You are my God and in You is all wisdom and understanding. There is no need for dismay, thanks to You, Lord. You promise to strengthen me and to help me and to uphold me with Your righteous right hand. If I am strong in the strength that You give, is there anything that can be stronger? No! If I am helped by You, can anything ever be bigger than that help? No! Since I am upheld by Your righteous right hand, is it possible for me to be under my enemy while being upheld by You? No!   I hope you are inspired today to pray God's Word, the promises He has made to You, over every prayer request you have. I'm telling you what, things change when we pray or the devil wouldn't work so hard to keep us from prayer. Satan does not want you praying God's Word. So, get to praying it and smash your enemy under your feet.    Thanks for being here for this episode. Episode 73 - God Keeps Every One of His Promises (5 Bible Verses with Promises For You)

Everything is possible with God.”     It is so, so important to remember, when we are making the big bold decision to really, truly believe God's promises - to live a believing life - that we don't base our belief on anything outside of the Lord. We aren't mustering up more faith. We are simply deciding that we will believe what the Bible says to us. And so, this verse is just a great reminder that you don't have to make God's promises work out in your life, in your kid's lives, etc. Nope.    There are actually many, many things in this life that are impossible - for man. For humans. For wives and for moms and for employees and for church members. You want the God who makes the impossible, possible doing all the things in your life, am I right?    Get a sense of Jesus, today, looking at you intently and reminding you, firmly but with great love and compassion, that it isn't about mankind's ability to make this thing fly. Because God makes everything possible.    Psalm 37:23 (NLT) says this - The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.   Oh wow - what a verse! What hope! What assurance! This is quite a promise! He is promising that He will direct your steps. And guess what? You can pray this verse over your loved ones, your co-workers, your spouse, your aging parents, your neighbors. And also, pray this over yourself. He cares so much - talk to Him. A lot! Often. All of the time. First, God says to be strong and courageous and that sentence ends with an exclamation point. So - let's just do what He says to do! Be strong. Be courageous. Exclamation point. I am guessing you have one or more parts of your life right now, at this point in time, where you can apply this. So go ahead and apply. Be strong. Be courageous. How? By resting in the Lord and knowing in your knower that He is going to keep His word.    Don't be afraid. Think on Jesus and the fear dissipates, really it does! Do not panic before them, it says. Well “them” of course refers to their enemies. Don't panic before your enemy.    And here is the reason why you don't need to be afraid, don't panic, be strong and courageous. For the Lord your God WILL PERSONALLY go ahead of you. Boom. Mic drop. Revelation 21:4 (NLT)  - He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying of pain. All these things are gone forever.   This is such a wonderful verse for us. I'm not going to deep dive into anything specific today - but we have had quite an 18 /19 or so months, all around the world. This verse is a balm for those who know Jesus. It's key. It's mission critical to remember there is a day coming when all the tears will stop. It won't. It just will not.    Lord bless you today. I have prayed for you, all who listen to this episode, and I am going to continue to pray for you.    Live a life sold out for Jesus, a die hard for His promises, and just see what God might do in and through a life lived like that.    Find me on instagram @janlburt or on Facebook in the prayer group - Praying Through the Storm - and I have a book, a devotional, available on Amazon - The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises - with verses that have the word “WILL” in them. Welcome to Episode #69 of the Red Ink Revival Leadership Podcast. Today’s conversation is with Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, a New York Times Best Selling Author and leading professional expert in child development and parenting. Our conversation takes us into the following topics:   Tina’s backstory of becoming a professional parenting expert Attachment science and how attachment patterns develop our relationship templates for life Science’s best predictor of how well our children will turn out Defining the four attachment patterns that form how we connect in relationships The “4 Ss” that build secure attachment (safe, seen soothed and secure) Parenting unpredictability and its impact on a child’s brain The power of consistent relationship repairs in creating a child’s window of tolerance The importance of engaging our own story to know why kids can push our trigger buttons  What happens in a child’s emotional circuits when parents offer empathy and connection What the answer is in parenting a child when you don’t know what to do Fears that “I might be screwing my kids up.” How our own parenting shame spiral will compel future “flip my lid” cycles The most attuned parents will get parenting connections wrong about 70% of the time It’s never too late to repair past relationship ruptures even though the child is now an adult How to make sense of and manage parent guilt or mom guilt. Half of who our kids become is because of genetics, and the other half is because of experience and epigenetics Parents that ruminate around regrets do so because of roots in their own story and unprocessed anxieties How to be at peace from regrets that we didn’t raise our kids in church How the brain processes circuits for feeling stuck/regret versus circuits of empowerment Do we need to forgive ourselves for parenting mistakes? Using rituals and symbols to let go of the guilt and shame of parenting failures. Our history is not our destiny. How understanding our own parent’s backstories will compel compassion from us today Managing the shame and what to do when we have feelings of “not liking” or even “being disgusted” with our kids. Check out this devotional about God's promises (available on Amazon) The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises book available on Amazon   Psalm 111:2-6    Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all those who delight in Him. He has made His wonderful acts to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful and full of loving compassion. He has given food to those who fear Him (with awe-inspired reverence); He will remember His covenant forever. He has declared and made know to His people the power of His works, in giving them the heritage of the nations.   Splendid and majestic is His work. Okay, so here we are faced with the hard truth about everything God does - His works are splendid (think on that for a second - splendid - what does that word bring to mind?)   He wants us to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that His works are splendid - and majestic - and He has works to do in our lives, promises to keep to us, that will be splendid and majestic. Part of not missing out on those amazing moments includes believing Him for those moments before they actually happen and also reminding ourselves (and remind other people of this too) that God's work in our life is splendid and majestic.   The definition of righteousness is: the quality of being morally right - free from guilt - excellent - virtuous - it really does mean to be right. God is always, always right. Period. Not comma, but period. He is always morally right. He never feels guilt over what He does or how He goes about fulfilling His perfect will because He is always morally right, and so cannot do the wrong thin.   His works are always excellent and virtuous. That is how He is working in your life. That is your promise from Psalm 111. Count on it!   God is ever mindful of His covenant.    He has made promises to you, and the way God makes a promise is to make a covenant. Like a legal agreement, in modern terms. It's solemn and it's binding. Kind of like a compact (anybody remember learning about the Mayflower Compact? They weren't getting off of that itty bitty 25 foot wide, 106 foot long boat until they had all agreed to keep the compact. That's what God is saying. You should know that's how He views His words to you, His promises to you. They mean so much to Him, and He really wants you to know that the reason His promises mean so much to Him is because YOU mean so much to Him.    The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises book available on Amazon   If you would like to join the online prayer group on Facebook, here is the link (request to join and we'll get you added to the group right away!) https://www.facebook.com/groups/627249051525444

My job as the leadership hacker is to hack into the minds, experiences, habits and learning of great leaders, C-Suite executives, authors and development experts so that I can assist you developing your understanding and awareness of leadership. I am Steve Rush and I am your host today. I am the author of Leadership Cake. I am a transformation consultant and leadership coach. I cannot wait to start sharing all things leadership with you. On today's show, we have Govert Van Sandwijk. He is the managing partner of Time to Grow Global. He is also the author of The Power of Professional Closeness, before we get to speak with Govert. It is The Leadership Hacker News.   The Leadership Hacker News Steve Rush: We reported on the last show that folk were using toilet roll to increase the fun factor in the face of adversity. That is no different this week, David Faulkner, who's a florist from Blossom's events in Truman, Arkansas, has created bouquets of loo roll to put a smile on the face of his customers. These arrangements are in response to the limited supply caused by the global pandemic at the moment. David tells us each bouquet comes with a dozen deluxe toilet rolls, fully customizable. David told GMA, We just want to lighten the mood. Well, I say, good on you, David. In other news, researchers have shown that if we ask ourselves these six questions I am about to share with you, it will improve our self-care and self-care right now is incredibly important not only to us, but to those that we lead to, here is the six questions. Number 1. What am I grateful for today?   Number 2: Whom I am checking on, or connecting with today?   Number 3: What expectations of normal life, I am letting go today?   Number 4: Am I getting fresh air today?   Number 5: How I am moving my body or exercising today?   Number 6: What contribution am I making to others today?   Six great questions that will improve our self-care and as leader's resilience and well-being start with us engaging the body and the mind, the first step in clarity for leaders be the fittest leader you can be. That has been the Leadership Hacker News. If you have any news insights, let us know through our social media sites.   Start of Interview Steve Rush: I am joined today. By best-selling author of The Power of Professional Closeness. Founding Partner of Time To Go Global. Who has had assignments, in over 50 countries already. So truly is an international leadership development coach, Govert Van Sandwijk. Welcome to the show Govert. Govert Van Sandwijk: Nice to be here, Steve. It is a pleasure and an honour. Steve Rush: So you started your journey, not in a traditional business sense, but coming from a neurological background. You started your journey, right. As genius psychologist? So tell us how you ended up from genius psychologist to international leadership development coach. Govert Van Sandwijk: Okay, I will go further. Let's say the comeback journey and I can talk hours about this now. Actually, when I was just from university, the market for, you know, psychologists or this kind of background was really limited. Basically I found myself at the opportunity to have a job as a junior psychologist with the firm that was doing some work for the judiciary system. And basically, the task was to assess whether or not a suspected criminal was suffering of any kind of ontology, and basically, that was my first job out of the university. And one of the things actually, when I got into it is that I found it was super, super difficult to kind of maintain a more distant position in trying to do an assessment based on objective data and facts while all the time my gut was telling me something else. I kind of just started to become a little bit of a problem back then where I found and I really kind of got the meaning of it much later in my career. But at that moment I found, hey, there's so much going on emotionally with me when I do this work, but I'm not able to use these emotions and to use these feelings about what I'm seeing, what I'm observing, etc. Because I am always being told, you know, you have to maintain your distance. And this was basically the mantra as well that we learned in a UNI. Created kind of attention and a feeling where I thought I am not doing my job in the best possible way, and that led me to think, okay, then probably this is not for me, you know. I went on to the next job where essentially I stepped into the headhunters game, so to speak, where I could use my psychological knowledge. But I started to learn more about, let's say, a business context, which was a huge step for me. And also super interesting because as a recruiter or a headhunter back then, you have to learn a lot about a certain organization or a certain business in the shortest possible time. So you get to know a lot of different businesses and maybe on a pretty superficial level, but still you get to see in a lot of different kitchens, and basically that got me hooked, really hooked on, let's say, the organizational life and organizational practice as an area to work in. Steve Rush: There is a massive shift there isn't there between being in a psychological role where you're faced with lots of emotions that you haven't express? Conversely, then moving into a role where you reliant on that gut feel and using that intuition and emotion, can you recall a time where that really played out for you? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, to be honest, I remember this very distinct moment and I was sitting in this…I think it was an old nunnery converted into a, you know, a place where they had young criminals, let's say between 18 and 22. It was not a prison, but it was somewhere in between, like a holding, and I was interviewing I was assessing this guy, and he must have been three years or four years younger than I was at back at that moment. The guy was suspected of pretty heinous things involving kids, and for me, this was kind of a turning point, and I was really young, to have kids myself. I just had father, my first daughter, well, first daughter, my daughter. But that moment for me, that really is the example where I felt I am really not able to do my job without properly listening to my emotions as well, and I felt at that moment, this is not the place for me, so I have to do something. So basically it was a fleeing of a certain situation that kind of let me start to look around me again, and then I ended up into the recruitment classic practice. But I wasn't that aware at that moment kind of the awareness about what was happening, that came much later. Steve Rush: When was it you found first relying on that kind of professional closeness that you've come to create as almost your own now? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, that is a good question. The emotions, of course, you know, really working with the emotions that came actually in the job right after because, you know, you look at people's resumes. You look at their backgrounds. You talk to them and you know a lot about your client's context as well. Then there is only so far that you can really kind of tick boxes on. While a lot of it is also relying actually on all your senses in terms of yeah, will this person be a right fit for this context? So then, you need to start to sense and to listen to your emotions, which was completely different I would say from before when the mission was, you know, use all the instruments and then maybe afterwards try to listen to your emotions as well. But the awareness, the real awareness about this, actually I think that started to develop pretty late, actually, after I started my own firm, which was probably five or six years later when I was 32. In the meanwhile, I have progressed from this recruiting firm to a Consulting Company, where I was leading the assessment centre practice, and at some point, they asked me, hey, do you want to become partner with our firm? And that was for me to triggering moment to say, okay, if you guys think I can become a partner in this firm, maybe it's time for me to consider to become partner of my own firm. I am 32, so I am young enough. If it all blows up within a year, I will have a huge experience to learn from, and then I can just pick up where I left off and I will find a job. Basically, that never happens, and now we are, I think what it is, 18 years almost down the line. I am still super happy with that start back then, when I was 32. Steve Rush: And super busy, of course, if folk were listening around the whole concept of professional closeness, how would you describe that to somebody you would never really experienced? The whole philosophy of professional closeness before. Govert Van Sandwijk: For me, professional closeness, first of all, it is a sort of a concept, but it's also really a lot like a mind-set. The concept or the mind-set itself in terms of what it really is, for me still maturing, but what I think helps is by looking at the opposites, first of all, and this is a well describes concept, which is called professional distance. You know, doctors, lawyers, a lot of people in professional roles, they get this mantra of you need to stay objective, meaning don't let you let your emotions get the best of you, don't get drawn in. Don't feel basically I mean, to a certain extent, I can completely understand this, but my learning of these last 20 years is, is that your emotions. What you feel is not only making you able to connect better to the people around you and that you work with, but it also serves as a, let's say, a prehistoric radar for things that might be happening all around, but you're not yet 100 percent aware. So listening to these emotions, using them, and leveraging them in order for creating better workplace relationships, having a better sense of what is happening in your contexts. Yeah, for me it has become, let's say what I describe, the power of professional closeness and as a leader this starts with, let's say, really, really daring to start to listen to those emotions, but also start to show those emotions and opening up to the people that is closest around you. Steve Rush: I love the whole principle of prehistoric radar because we all have the same kind of brain that has evolved over the last fifty thousand years. Some parts of evolved a little more than others, right, but we this tool to use, don't we. How do you use the kind of psychology background to help you understand how different parts of the brainwork and how the decision-making process is impacted by that with your clients. Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, I love the question and to be honest, when I was studying psychology back, let's say this is over 25 years ago. So back then, when it came to neuroscience, neuroscience was much less evolved than it is right now. We didn't have that much less factual background on how the brain works and how that translates into behaviour and how psychology, which is, you know, the study of studying the mind, but not necessarily from a biological perspective. So how did came together, I think is only something that started to really, evolve over the last 10 years. To be honest, I started to read up on it a lot and started to become fascinated by the fact that now we start to understand our brain. A lot of those old school and old fashion psychological concepts start to make sense. Some others, you know. Absolutely not anymore, but nowadays, the knowledge we have is at the level that we can also use it to monitor our own behaviours, to use it in the boardroom, to use it when leading. I think, you know, having this background or having this knowledge, it is an obligation to spread that knowledge as well from a leadership perspective, when we are doing our type of work. Steve Rush: In your experience Govert, of working with executives and leaders, how much value would you put on them understanding their own behaviours from a neurological perspective? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, I talk about this in the book quit a lot. I think for me it is a cornerstone that should be, you know, if that would be a university or a school of leadership, like like a proper MBA, something like that. Then I think neuroscience and what it means would be one of the cornerstones, because really understanding trigger points, the unconscious behaviours, the defensiveness, how the different parts of the brain work together and how this translates into your own behaviour. I think that is an invaluable insight for everybody useful to be honest. I think it is one of the most valuable lessons that you can learn and it helps, of course, also to understand what is it that I can actually try to steer and to control and what is it that I need to kind of monitor and to react to. Steve Rush: If I was a leader of a team or a line manager and I was really struggling to create that professional closeness, the, you know, getting that connectivity and understanding my team at a much deeper level. What, strategies would you share with me, that might be helpful to make that happen? Govert Van Sandwijk: Well, first of all, I think the first thing is the acknowledgement of saying, okay, if you are leading a team, let's say as a manager, you always have a responsibility or a mission or an assignment or a task. What I always think is the first thing is understand that your task, your mission or your assignment is not actually the mission itself, but it is making sure you create a team that is able to perform or delivered that mission. That is the first task, so it is all about human interactions and it is all about having everybody be at their best. Also working together towards that same mission. For you as a manager, your first responsibility should be looking at the people instead of looking at what is my mission. That is the first awareness I think needs to have before you can even start to think about developing anything that comes close to professional closeness. Second of all, I think once you have this awareness you need to start to be able to understand your own behaviour triggers or peculiarities in terms of your reactions. Once you understand that, I think the third thing is show the people around you who you really are. To kind of take off your office face or your mask and show the people around you who you really are, because once they start to see, you know, you as a human being instead of as a manager with an assignment and a role and a status, then you have the right starting point in place. Then afterwards, I think there is a lot of different things that you might be able to do, but that depends also on the context. So there's tons of strategies and tips, so it comes down to daring to be you in front of your team. Steve Rush: And I guess that also creates the more you give of yourself, the more people are likely to reciprocate, aren't they? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, and that I think is the most important thing. It is really leading by example, you know, creating these conversations that have a certain depth and openness, which for me does not mean that you have to always be sharing your deepest secrets, but you have to be willing to share your real doubts about the things that you are doing and experiencing. And that can be about the professional context, but, you know, once you're in that place where you can really say, hey, you know, we are coming across this challenge and I've never done it. I am really unsure on how to attack this, so I need the help of all you guys. You know, once you are really, really kind of letting go of this idiotic idea that as a manager, you need to know everything. You need to have all the answers and you can start to work from that place. I think you already have made a big shift. Steve Rush: That sounds great, thank you Govert and in me, kind of get into a little bit more about you over the past few weeks and months. It is fair to say you have done quite a lot of research around the whole kind of getting smart people together. It is often referred to as collective intelligence, and you did some research that says really just getting smart people together is just not enough. What would be the reason for that? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, this was something kind of struck me while I was doing the research on Book, and I was thinking, of course, you know. You know, what is the point of professional closeness in a business context? It is about creating a better atmosphere and also about creating better results for the company, right. I started to look into this concept of collective intelligence, and basically it says, first of all, if you have a bunch of really, really highly intelligent individuals and you put them into a room and they start to work together, this is not guaranteeing that you will have the most collectively intelligence team. And a collectively intelligent team is a team that is able to respond and react, and let's say be informed of all the challenges that they are facing. It is really the flexibility and the adaptiveness of the team to be functioning on a high performing level all the time, no method to call. What I found out actually is that there is three indicators being described as well in the book by Thomas Malone, which is called Super Minds. Number one, it is social perceptiveness, basically social perceptiveness and the ability of the members of the team or the members of the group to read the emotions of others that are in that team. So being aware of the emotions of others in the team while you are working and while you are working together, which is the first indicator, and so if that is not there or if that's, let's say not there enough. You will never be able to tap into all those highly intelligence people because it will be still a fragmented bunch of very smart people together. The second part is the degree of equality in participation, which basically comes down to if you have one or two people hogging the conversation all the time. This means that all the time, other people are basically not contributing to the conversation and not letting their brains work at the same problem as well, that was number two. Then number three, as I think is the most interesting one, and also from the perspective that we've just had, the International Women's Day, it is actually the number of women in the group.  It has been shown that the higher the number of women in the group, the higher its collective intelligence. To be honest, it is a bit of a combination of the first two factors, because women are a little bit more than men are generally more socially perceptive, and they are also less likely to harbour a conversation because they normally are already a little bit more about having everybody participate. I think it is very interesting if you look to these three points and you look, for instance, at your management team or your board. What is it that you see, how are we doing on those three indicators? Do we really see what is going on the faces of others? Do we monitor and do we see their emotions? Are we making sure that everybody has an equal say and that everybody is contributing? And in the end, are the women in the team, and of course, this is just the basic prerequisites. Well, it is a very, very strong starting point. Steve Rush: It is really interesting, actually, because in my experience of having led board facilitation exercises and activities and coached executive teams where I see more diverse boards, I, you know, diverse in sexual orientation, in gender, and in thinking actually, the less group think, you also get right. Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, the less group think, the more you need to really join forces and look at the situation at hand and trying to solve it in the optimal way, the best possible way given the circumstances, which is something else than letting your egos prevail, and I think that diversity in any sense will help a lot. Then again, diversity only is not enough, you have to also be willing as a leader to see, okay, are we using that diversity? You know. If it is still, you know, the most diverse group but it is only a couple of people who is doing the talking all the time. Then you are still stuck in not using everybody to their best. Steve Rush: You are right, and I think it's incumbent on us all as leaders however large or small our team is, is to just be aware and notice whether or not we have got full participation and unlocking that opportunity to have a broader conversations. Govert, at this point of the show, we can ask our guests to share some of their top leadership hacks, so what would be your top leadership hacks? You could share with our listeners. Govert Van Sandwijk: That is actually great timing for the question because the first one connects back to what we have been talking about just now. If you are a leader, a team leader or a CEO, it does not really matter. And you are leading your meeting or your bi weekly meeting and you're looking at the team and you're thinking somewhere in the back of your mind is this voice that is saying, hey, what a passive bunch. Once you hear this thought, you should be aware that probably you are doing too much talking. I have seen this over and over again. If you hear this, what a passive bunch in your minds, you need to sit down, zip it and really create space for others to start participating. That is for sure, my first act. Steve Rush: What would be your next hack? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, the next one I would say it is actually connected to daring to listen to your gut feeling in a very literal sense. So let's say you're doing something and suddenly you start to get this turning feeling in your stomach and it makes you feel really, really uncomfortable, and your primary impulsive reaction would be I want to get rid of this discomfort. The heck I would say if you start to feel something like this. Train yourself to endure this discomfort, and to use this discomfort as an indicator. Of, hey, what is happening might be something new, so actually, it is super good because we want to innovate, so we are entering into a space that triggers me to become uncomfortable, but this is great because it really is an indicator that we are doing something new? But it can also be an indicator of that you are experiencing something that you don't want to do, but still might be the best thing to do for the company or for a given situation. I think always listen to your gut feeling and to endure it instead of to, you know, get rid of it right away.  Steve Rush: And I did some research when I concluded my book, actually, and research suggests that your got feelings is about four out of five times, right. Because it scans those unconscious thoughts and memories that we all kind of had for many, many years, right? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, I absolutely agree. Steve Rush: We ask our guests to think about hacks that they have learned from times in the past where things have not worked out so well. Perhaps what they screwed up or they have been disadvantaged. Have you got anything that you could share with our listeners, which would be your hack to attack? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, so the hack to attack for me is basically be always prepared for the worst and be prepared emotionally. The first time that I kind of really, really experienced this in a bad way. The company was a couple of years old and then we had been working internationally on a huge assignment and we had like I think two and a half or three hundred thousand euros, which was in the pipeline of being paid. And at some points the company said we have compliance issues and we need to stop every single payment until we have figured it out or if something is wrong, you can forget about the money. This situation really kind of stopped, but what I learned from it is really to prepare yourself when something like that happens that actually you cannot really anticipate. Make sure that you train yourself to not be blown out of the water emotionally, because if you train yourself to be prepared emotionally and that you can handle, hey, yes, this is bad, but this means that I need to start acting in a different way. And instead of allowing myself to sit in these negative emotion of feeling victim to the situation, that is for me one of the biggest things and whether you are a leader, an entrepreneur or whatever. Make sure you are always prepared emotionally for the worst. Steve Rush: It sounds academically dead easy, does not it, to get prepared emotionally, but how physically can I do that. What would be the one or two things that would help me train to get myself prepared emotionally? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, I think that is a great question, and it comes back to one of my hacks, actually. It is basically once something small, let's say surprising and not so nice happens, and when you start to have this emotional reaction, really use those moments to feel what is happening inside of your body to make a note of it mentally and really, write it down. So what do I experience? What do I feel? Look at the contexts and see at that exact same moment what helps you to calm down or to mitigate that feeling? And if you do that quite a lot of times in situations where the stakes are not so high, you basically train yourself to react in a certain way. Then when something happens, when the stakes are really high, you have I would say a coping making mechanism already installed that will prepare you for when that situation really happens. Steve Rush: Got it, so it is about setting down some tactile foundations, really, that unconsciously you create over time. Govert Van Sandwijk: Exactly, absolutely. Steve Rush: Super. Last question for you today is. If you were able to do a bit of time travel, go back to when you were 21 and bump in to your 21-year-old self. What will be the one bit of advice that you would give Govert then? Govert Van Sandwijk: This is very much about my own journey. So what I would say to my 20-year-old self, I would say, hey Govert, don't rush into responsibilities. Use the time that you have right now to learn about cultures, to learn about social skills, to look around you, to learn about the world, but don't rush into responsibilities, trying to be, let's say, trying to live the adult life. Use this time right now when you actually don't have a lot of things to think about, when your backpack is relatively empty. Steve Rush: It is great advice, thank you Govert. Folks probably listening to you speak, and we have mentioned your book, The Power of Professional Closeness. How can they find that a little bit more about the work that you are doing at the moment? Govert Van Sandwijk: Yeah, I would say always good to take a look at our website, which is a timetogrowglobal.com and if you want to check out the book, just hop on over to Amazon - The Power of Professional Closeness - Govert Van Sandwijk and it's available. Read about it in the reviews to see if it is something for you, and of course, I will be happy to help if anybody wants to reach out directly. Steve Rush: And we will also put a link in our show notes to make sure that people listening to this can go straight away. Click on those links as well Govert. Thank you for spending some time with us today. It has been delightful talking with you. Govert Van Sandwijk: It was it was a great pleasure, and I am really happy to be part of, you know, your first five or 10 shows and I will be looking forward to have the podcast will evolve over time.  Steve Rush: Thanks Govert. This week on the show, I’m exploring the 4 pillars of joy: Inspiration, Mindfulness, Action, and Fun. If you’ve been listening awhile, you know that I think of joy as a wayfinding emotion. I have seen joy dance with people, reach out for people, even when they are in their darkest times or most difficult times. Joy can look like a tiny inkling of hope, a little nudge to call a friend or a doctor; joy looks like that second in your life, like several guests and so many of my clients have sited - that you know that there is “more” to your life than whatever your current crappy circumstances are. That you know you want more, desire more, that you personally are meant for more than what you’re experiencing right now.   This week we’ll look at one of the quotes that inspired my show, and I’m going deeper with it around HOW to find more joy. What I’ve seen in the fact that joy is a choice is that there’s more to it. Joy can be lived out in multiple ways. I see that there are patterns in how I’ve danced with joy in my life, and how I’ve seen joy be jump started in other people’s lives. That part is fascinating. I’m focusing on my favorite four patterns today, the ones I’ve started calling the four tenets or four pillars of joy. The four pillars are: 1. Inspiration 2. Mindfulness 3. Action 4. The focus of mindfulness creates the stability of emotion. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is not as much of my mindfulness as it should be, but I am aware of it and when I do it, it is helpful. I use counting more than breathing. And the power of the logic of the numbers to steady my thoughts back down. Suggested Resources Book: The Myth of Multitasking: How Doing It All Gets Nothing Done by Dave Crenshaw Book: The Power of Focus by Jack Canfield and Les Hewitt App: My Calendar People are addicted to apps and they believe that having the next new phone or new app is going to make them productive. In fact, it is not the app, but how you use it; what the underlying principals are. Bullying Story I've got two stories and they're both related. I grew up as somebody who, at least I feel, was bullied quite a bit. Part of that is the personality. Part of that is that I grew up in an environment at home where I was subject to a lot of emotional and verbal abuse, constantly, and so I did a lot of things at school which were ways to get attention and ways to get people to like me that were just not normal. And so it put a target on my back and it was really hard for me to deal with. What I gained from that personally was empathy for others. I really strongly dislike when I see others getting judged or diminished because they are different. Bring that to just last week. My son is twelve and is just starting Junior High. All of us who have been through that experience know how difficult that can be. He's a really good kid and he's also really sensitive. I said to him, Straton, I want to tell you something that I wish someone had told me going into Junior High. I said, 'You are going to see kids doing things that are rude, they're going to say things to you that are not nice. What I want you to understand is, they are all just trying to figure it out. They don't know what's right and what's wrong. They don't even know what kind of a person they want to be yet. So when you see that, don't take it personally. It's so easy to think, oh, they're picking on me. But instead, just say, that's somebody just trying to figure it out, and just go, there it is. Just be nice to them and move on, because my experience is, those same people who acted like that, the majority of them, ten to twenty years from now, they regret the way that they acted, or they completely forget about it and they become people who are well-adjusted, nice, kind adults.  And so, my perspective is, we need not take that personally when those kinds of things happen. That's just part of other people going through the process of learning and growing. I had it happen to me this week. I had somebody send me a nasty message about my book. The initial reaction is to personalize it and say, I'm going to be offended by this. But what I did was, I flipped it around. I thought, what if I said that to him in the workplace. Usually I don't respond to this, but for some reason I decided to respond. And so I said to him, 'Imagine if I came into your workplace and I said that to you, over your shoulder. Can you feel how ugly that moment would be? And If I saw someone say that to you, I would tell them to stop. Because I believe in you. As a human being, you should not be treated like that. So if people are treating you like that, I'm sorry that that's happening. I think a lot of times, if people lash out like that, they're doing that because other people are treating them that way or because they feel insecure about their life. So the approach I tried to take as an adult, is to turn it around and say, I support you; I care about you.
