How do you sell someone a product they don't know they need?  When Sheri Chaney Jones launched her impact management platform, most of her customers didn't even know what impact management was. A few years later, it's become an industry standard. Sheri is a renowned social entrepreneur and impact measurement expert. With over two decades of experience, she has transformed the efficacy of nonprofits and government organizations through data-driven strategies. As the founder of Measurement Resources Company and SureImpact, she's dedicated to enhancing social sector performance. Sheri is also an author, professor, and advocate for women's equity, holding degrees from Central Michigan University and The Ohio State University.  Create Your Own Category  As a consultant, Sheri's job was to build impact measurement frameworks to help nonprofit organizations understand the effectiveness of their programs. She worked with each client to determine which data to collect and how to collect it, but the process was very manual. She started searching for software that would keep that information at their fingertips, and when she couldn't find it, she created it. When Sheri launched SureImpact in 2020, it was the first impact management platform on the market–a term that no one else was using, but her competitors have since rebranded to include.  From Service Provider to Software Company In Sheri's consulting business, she knew how to do every job. Launching SureImpact was a new challenge because she didn't know how to code software. While she's still the CEO, she had to learn how to pitch angel investors, find the right team, and report to a board. As the first software of its kind, SureImpact has done a lot of market education. In 2020, most nonprofits didn't account for impact measurement in their budget because they didn't know it was possible.  In the early stages, Sheri hesitated to leverage her personal brand and network. As a tech CEO, she didn't think personal branding was as relevant as it had been to her consulting company. But she realized it was her experience that inspired SureImpact–and that if she wanted to break into the market, she needed to share her story.  Now, Sheri leverages her platform through speaking engagements, blogs, webinars, and even a book: Impact & Excellence: Data-Driven Strategies for Aligning Mission, Culture, and Performance in Nonprofit and Government Organizations.  As a result, SureImpact has increased new customers by 50%.  Enjoy this episode with founder Sheri Chaney Jones… Soundbytes 8:58-9:15 “When we went talk about branding, when we went to market in 2020, we called ourselves the first impact management platform on the market. And what's been fascinating is, since launching, some of our largest competitors have rebranded themselves as an impact management platform.”  14:23-14:36 “So prior to even launching, launching true impact, I had been traveling, speaking at conferences, talking about how to create these data driven, high performing cultures. And so we've just leveraged that platform I'd already had.” 19:59-20:39 “If I write and start with a place of gratitude and start my day with writing everything I'm grateful for, and then maybe my wishes or my prayers. Then once I get through that laundry list of stuff, what's so interesting is a new level of inspiration will show up, and I'll start writing in the third person, which is so fun. It's so fun when my journaling takes that shift where I'm writing to myself, and it's almost like my inner self, or the self that has that wisdom or intuition is guiding me and telling me what to do.” Quotes “I've always been fascinated by using data to predict performance.” “For entrepreneurs and businesses, we have some pretty common metrics we use. But these non-profits and social sector organizations have to add another layer of metrics to the conversation: are they changing lives and changing circumstances?” “I didn't find the product on the market that was solving the problem that I thought needed to be solved. So we built a product for the future.” Links mentioned in this episode: SureImpact website: https://www.sureimpact.com/  Measurement Resources Company: https://measurementresourcesco.com/  Connect with Sheri on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sherichaneyjones/

This changed dramatically during a second visit in 2017, when my friend Hama showed me the real Singapore – its lively food scenes, natural beauty, and bustling sights. These experiences, combined with several return trips, gradually transformed my view of Singapore from a mere travel hub to a city full of hidden gems and conveniences. The pivotal moment in my expat journey came during a casual conversation with my friend Christian in 2019. Mulling over the challenges of startup life in Germany, he suggested moving to Singapore. This idea, initially laughed off, soon took root. I reached out to an agency for help in setting up my consulting company. The process was smooth, and soon I was not only a business owner but also an employment pass holder in Singapore. The onset of COVID-19 in early 2020, coinciding with my move, led to an unexpected immersion in Singaporean life. The lockdown, though challenging for many, turned out to be a transformative and grounding period for me, solidifying my connection to this dynamic city. So here I am, embracing my life in Singapore with my fiancée, Nat, and diving into various projects, including this podcast. If you're curious about moving here or need business advice, feel free to reach out. Stay tuned for future episodes where I'll delve into the practical aspects of relocating and setting up life in Singapore.

The Business of You with Rachel Gogos

In April 2020, when the rest of the world was shutting down, Madhav Srinath was gearing up to launch his company.  With a Bachelor's in Industrial Engineering and a Master's of Science in Computer Science, Madhav brought his background together to found NexusLeap: an analytics consulting company that specializes in equipping companies with scalable decision-making tools, helping them become more efficient and cost-effective. Madhav has deep technical expertise in data warehousing, business intelligence, and cloud application management. Before founding NexusLeap, he served on Microsoft's advisory board for their Artificial Intelligence product offerings in the cloud and has held several analytics leadership positions in consulting and product companies.  What started as a one-man show has turned into a successful company that not only survived the pandemic, but has grown tremendously since.  Turning Tough Times into Opportunity Before founding NexusLeap, Madhav was working as a sought-after consultant and helping a friend with fundraising for his Virtual Reality company. When Covid hit in early 2020 and the rest of the world hunkered down, Madhav decided to use it as an opportunity to get ahead. When a client came to him for help solving a complex problem, he jumped at the chance. What started out as a solo consultancy grew quickly into NexusLeap. Madhav freely admits that there may have been better times to launch a company – but with support from his wife (who joined the company a year later as their full-time COO), he was able to build solid foundations.  NexusLeap made the most of uncertain economic times to help their clients come out the other side stronger than ever. Since then, they've grown steadily year over year. The Power of “And” Madhav is a firm believer in the power of differentiating your brand based on “and's”. It's not enough to be good at one thing; for a powerful differentiator, you need to bring multiple specialties together.  For example, NexusLeap builds technical infrastructure and collaborates with business functions. Lots of companies build tech infrastructure, but it's marrying the two together that makes NexusLeap so unique. Madhav knew that in most companies, the tech and business teams were siloed. He wanted to find a way to facilitate collaboration between the two. NexusLeap helps companies bridge that gap, so that their entire organization speaks the same language and is driven by the same incentives. Leveraging Your Personal Brand to Grow Your Business Although NexusLeap started out as Madhav's personal brand, the current priority is growing the company brand so that it can stand independently. As a respected name in the industry, Madhav uses his personal platform to help his network learn more about the company. As a startup founder, Madhav wears a lot of different hats. Spending dedicated time on marketing and brand identity tends to take away from other areas of the business, which is why he prefers to let it happen organically. When Madhav posts to LinkedIn, for example, it's to share client results or how proud he is of his team's work. He encourages all of his employees to do the same. And since they've spent time building long-term relationships with every team member, the result is that NexusLeap effortlessly attracts new clients and talent. They've built a brand that's known for resilience, excellence, and loyalty. If you're trying to grow your business's brand visibility, think about what values you want to portray through your content. Enjoy this episode with CEO and Founder Madhav Srinath…  Quotes “From a differentiation standpoint, I always believe in the power of ‘and's'. If I'm good at building cloud infrastructure, that's great but there are a lot of people that are good at that. But what is the and? If I'm good a building cloud infrastructure and collaborating with business functions, all of a sudden there's this really dangerous combination that very people can compete with.” “I think what we do really well is it's not one or the other, it's one and the other.” “There were probably better times. But it's one of those things, when you create a surface area for luck, when you see the opportunity and you're able to do it…you have to go for it without thinking about it too much logically.” “Companies are led by business problems, that's what strings them along. The value is had by solving that business problem. Technology generally enables those problems to be solved, but companies have such a hard time bridging that gap.” “As we grow, I see more and more of my team members filling in those gaps I left behind. As a human being, there are weaknesses I have in addition to my strengths. So it's cool to see my team members fill in those gaps and make the brand bigger and bigger.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the NexusLeap Website: https://nexusleap.com/ Connect with Madhav Srinath on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/madhavsrinath/

In today's Quick Fire Friday episode, Michael interviews Daniel Sih, the Founder & CEO of Spacemakers. He's based in Hobart, Tasmania in Australia. Daniel is a strategic planner and productivity consultant and has been writing and speaking about productivity for a long time. He's also a physiotherapist, an accredited CliftonStrength coach, and an award-winning author of the book “Spacemaker: How to Unplug, Unwind and Think Clearly in the Digital Age and had won the Australian Business Book Award in  2021 for Best Personal Development Book, and has been shortlisted for Myriad Award. His productivity group focuses on helping busy leaders, managers, and business owners to make space for more important things, especially in the heavily technology-driven world. In the heavily technology-driven world of marketing, where digital distraction can easily distract and overwhelm many leaders, managers, and business owners, thus, taking away all their time and space from more important things like personal well-being, family, and relationships which can result in poor health, relationships, and unproductivity, Daniel's productivity group can help provide a lot of research-backed reasons why we need space, how to make space, and to implement that as busy leaders, managers, and business owners. One thing Daniel recommends to small business owners is to start thinking about their relationship with the online world, self-reflecting if their relationship with the online world is maybe codependent or somewhat unhealthy and needs to be changed. So look at your habits. Where technology is adding to your life and your business. And where is it distracting from the life I want to live? From there, you can start to implement a series of simple habits to recapture the type of humanity you want to live.  This Cast Covers:  Daniel's insight about making space in digital distraction. Observation in the last five years and accelerating to post-covid about how leaders are smashed for time and space in their life. Shares about space's importance and how the overuse of technology can take us away from more important things. Asserts that making space and having a work-life balance will result in success in many aspects. Recommends two skill sets that can help overcome problems concerning space and work-life balance. Relates effective email management to the whole space-making methodology. Encourages self-reflection regarding habits, particularly around technology. The risks of the patterns and behaviors of digital overuse in many areas. Helpful practical examples of practices to create space and work-life balance. His mission for his business, Particle 41, is to be an agile software consultancy with a passion for persistence, communication and inspired product development. He also emphasizes the importance of balancing business goals with family responsibilities.  The conversation is about a software development company that provides software development services to businesses of all types and sizes. They employ teams of software engineers, data scientists, data engineers, and DevOps specialists to help solve their customers' software problems. As an example, they worked with a manufacturing company to build a mobile app and industry tool to measure the thickness of the coating applied to parts they were producing. This allowed the company to reduce waste and improve their manufacturing process by providing them with reports of the readings from the mobile environment.  The conversation was about the journey of a coder and the experiences he had throughout his career in software development. He started out by talking about how he had worked with a consultancy to build a kids' toys commerce platform, and then went on to start an online travel company, which made $70 million in annual travel. He also talked about how he worked on a vertical ad network, and the challenges of dealing with the VC market. Finally, he mentioned how the business had eventually fizzled out and ran its course. Summary: An undeniable paradigm shift taking place lies in the move towards self sufficiency. This is a major component of the rural lifestyle, and Aaron Clarey comes on the show to talk about some of the things he noticed when transitioning out of urban life in his move to South Dakota. Aaron describes many of these changes as psychological. Leaving a big city means getting used to a slower pace of living, with less hustle and bustle and establishments that shut down earlier. He has found himself less concerned with the US/global economy, and has an interesting perspective on these things in relation to his life in a rural community. Tune in for more insight. Highlights: -There are paradigm shifts taking place, and a major trend taking place is the move towards self sufficiency -Many people experience a shock when they go to less urbanized areas -Aaron has adapted to the rural lifestyle, having lived in South Dakota for a while now -One of the biggest adjustments is going from the hustle and bustle of traffic and constant activity to the slower life or rural communities. It's a psychological adaptation -Establishments have fewer employees, and thus close down earlier -Higher end amenities are few and far between -There is a greater sense of community in more rural areas, which comes with heightened accountability—but this is good thing -Aaron feels somewhat divorced with the US/global economy, but this comes from his job. He considers himself a contrarian investor -Aaron is also a minimalist; he doesn't have many expenses -It's good to pay attention to politics and economics, but responding with anger doesn't accomplish anything. -Accept what you do and do not control, and don't let the negative things that aren't in your control bring you down Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Captain Capitalism Aaron's Consulting Company

It's based on the premise that a director is a storyteller 24/7 and must be aware of the “truth” that he or she experiences in life in order to be able to reproduce it on the big screen. Through a series of hands-on exercises and practical experiences, the reader develops the “directorial senses” in order to be able to tell a story in the most effective way.Enjoy my conversation with Simone Bartesaghi.
