Dr. Graham Brayshaw, from the Animal Humane Society explains why the Dog Flu is impacting shelters around the state.
The history of the Animal Humane Society offers a jaw-dropping glimpse into Minneapolis life in the late 1800s. This was a time when horses struggled to pull loads up Lowry Hill and dogs at the pound were drowned in the Mississippi River. As part of a national movement, the humane society formed to prosecute cruelty to animals — and they prosecuted cruelty to children too. Investigating hundreds of cases, humane agents became the state's first social workers and probation officers. This story traces Minnesota's relationship to animals, from the workhorse era to the pandemic-puppy era. This week we talk to Dr. Kelly Gehlhaus who works in shelter medicine in Minnesota. We talk about her international studies, shelter medicine and navigating the challenges this brings for patients and their owners. We dive into finding your niche and what makes each veterinary professional individual. Dr. Kelly Gehlhaus attended the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, graduating in 2015. Upon graduation, she moved to Utah on a whim to begin her veterinary career in small animal clinical practice at a low-cost, high-volume clinic, where she was first introduced to the spectrum of care concept. After years in Utah, her partner, a fellow vet and Dick Vet graduate, obtained a veterinary pathology residency at the University of Minnesota. A year into their life in Minnesota, and amidst a pandemic, she joined the veterinary team at Animal Humane Society's community clinic, where she is now the Managing Clinic Veterinarian. At AHS, she played a pivotal role in piloting the Community Medicine Rotation with the University of Minnesota. Her special interests are animal behaviour, internal medicine, hospice care, and strengthening the human-animal bond through veterinary medicine. She is also the mother of five fur children (three dogs and two cats) and a small human child. One of her dogs is a recent impulse adoption, and so happens to be a blind pit bull puppy! Although life and work keep her very busy, she enjoys taking time to draw and paint, go for long runs, and is an avid equestrian. One of her passion projects is breaking down breed stigmas and volunteering for the most amazing organization, known as 'My Pitbull is Family', which runs the North Minneapolis Pet Resource Center. Everything a pet parent needs to know about giving dogs and cats a proper introduction for a healthy and pet-friendly home. How to introduce Dogs and CatsCartoons of our beloved past have done an excellent job manipulating the masses to believe that dogs and cats are destined to fight until the end of time. So when your kids can't agree on which animal to have as a pet – a cat or a dog – your next move is to figure out which types will coexist better than others.Whether you're bringing home a new dog or a new cat, it's essential to make the necessary adjustments to accommodate both pets. Let's say you've chosen a puppy to take home. Ensure that you've relocated your cat's bowl to a place that's out of reach to your new puppy. If you have some extra time before your pets meet, make changes to the cat's environment gradually. Now let's reverse it, you've selected a kitty, and she's ready to see her new playground. In the same way, as we've noted, prepare an elevated spot for your new kitty to eat & linger while she familiarizes herself with your home. This strategic positioning is both for your cat's protection and an effective way to allow the kitty to follow her curiosity when she's comfortable and begin to explore her new domain. Being sensitive to your dog or cat's stresses provides a smoother transition and a more stress-free union between canine and feline.A Home Sweet Pet-Friendly HomeDog and cat playing together on the couchAs soon as you've made it home, provide separate spaces for each animal and prevent contact for at least 3-4 days or until the newest furry family member has received necessary vaccinations, a comprehensive checkup, and been cleared of any potential illness. That's right; even your animals need to be quarantined! This room should be secure and include any required comforts for either animal. This list can consist of a scratch post, water, food, toys, multiple levels, and hiding places, to name a few of the necessary amenities. Place a few items that smell like your dog in your cat's quarters and a thing or two of your kitty in your puppy's space; in this way, they'll become accustomed to each other before their initial meeting. The mission here is to grant both animals the time and space to come to terms with their newest neighbor at a distance before they're able to cross paths formally.Another useful technique is brought to you by the Animal Humane Society. The AHS recommends that you feed both animals on either side of a closed-door; that way, both animals associate each other's presence with something pleasant like meal times! Each day move the bowls closer to the door until each pet can calmly snack close to the other. Clue in your pooper scooper service team so that they're also on board to bridge the gap between kitty and pup. Don't underestimate the power of commands and treats while training your cat and dog to play nice.Face Time for Dogs and CatsAt this point, if the cat and dog have managed to coexist peacefully, allow each other the courtesy of a quiet meal. Then it is time for some facial recognition! The idea here is to separate spaces between your cat and dog to one another by gradually increasing exposure. One of the key ways to accomplish this is to designate rooms for each animal. Only allow viewing during specific times. Keep each room suited to each animal's needs. Remain familiar with risks such as the cat's ability to squeeze through tight spaces or the dog's jumping gates. The intention here is to allow a chance for familiarity without allowing access just yet. Have treats readily available to reward good behavior. Keep a leash or toys nearby to redirect attention and limit any negative scenarios from playing out! The more they're familiar with one another, the more they're comfortable coexisting. Although they may not be best friends yet, both animals will be on the way to forming a harmonious relationship. It's important that their new friendship is based on their mutual love of treats, toys, and tummy tickles!Ultimately if these pointers don't prove effective, reach out to a professional trainer or your vet. Avoid using punishment; it can aggravate an already tense situation and prolong the process. Positively reinforcing the relationship as it develops will allow for a smoother transition.
Overall, 33% of U.S. adults have a will, according to Caring.com's 2021 wills and estate planning survey. Meanwhile, 27.5% of Black Americans have one, up from 25.9% in 2020. According to legalzoom.com Estate Planning Statistics, “the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number of people who have created a will or estate plan, but most Americans still remain without.” Some might consider this a state of emergency, but for those in fundraising and planning professions, it is an opportunity. Episode description: Lisa Whalen, PhD, is the author of Stable Weight: A Memoir of Horses, Hunger, and Hope. Her writing has also appeared in An Introvert in an Extrovert World, The Simpsons' Beloved Springfield, Introvert, Dear, and Adanna, among other publications. Lisa teaches writing and literature at North Hennepin Community College and is an equestrian and volunteer for the Animal Humane Society. In this episode of Peace Meal, Lisa describes two key components of her eating disorder recovery: writing and horseback riding. Underscoring the multifaceted nature of the healing process, she reflects on how writing and riding each offered unique lessons for her mind and body. Writing, she explains, supported and extended her therapy lessons, while riding provided a space to put the lessons into practice. Lisa introduces us to a few of the horses that served as mentors throughout her recovery, highlighting the lessons they could teach us all about staying present, taking up space, and being imperfect. She then translates how these and other recovery “nuggets”—the wisdom learned from horses, writing, and therapy—continue to serve her life and career. We cover: The mental health benefits of writing, even if we never share our writing with others What horses can teach us about taking up space and owning our imperfections The power of body language in both animals and people How traits like perfectionism, high sensitivity, and introversion can be harnessed for good Why recovery—like all growth and learning—is best taken one step at a time In Lisa's words: On the therapeutic role of horses: “For me, riding horses felt like a therapy practicum… I learned all this stuff while I was in therapy, and the horses were forcing me to practice it over and over.” On embracing imperfection: “There's no end to the learning. There's no perfect. You're always working toward it, but it's never a standard because the horses aren't perfect—and they don't care if they're perfect or not.” On the support of therapy: “It started off for me as a safe space. It was this place I could go and I could talk about all the worst stuff about myself and there was no judgment. She was only rooting for me. She only wanted me to succeed and to be happy and healthy, and she had the tools and the skills to help me do it.” Learn more about Lisa on her website and follow her on social media @LisaIrishWhalen. This podcast series is an ever-advancing learning journey that broadens the mind and changes the way we view working with dogs. Counter Conditioning is an evidence based method, proven to change behaviors grounded in aggression and anxiety. How we have adapted counter conditioning to address aggression and anxiety in dogs has taken some interesting turns. Billie refers to the advice provided by the American Kennel Club and the Animal Humane Society, trainers/behaviourists, and her own research based on hundreds of clients per year for decades to dive deep into what exactly counter conditioning is and why it is effective - or not. This episode also explains what evidence based and scientifically proven methods are. This is the first part of a 2 part series in the 3rd Season. Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing. Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences. Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.References:The information in this episode is taken from the following sites. Dr. Graham Brayshaw, a 2004 graduate of Texas A&M’s veterinary school, is both the chief veterinarian and the director of animal services for the Animal Humane Society (AHS), an organization based in the twin cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Dr. Brayshaw’s interest in animal welfare and community cats began when he did a rotation through local shelters in vet school, and in 2012, he accepted a role at AHS. AHS took in over 23,000 animals last year, including 11,000 cats (which includes some cats transported from partner agencies). The agency has a 96% placement rate and runs an active community cats program, along with a low-cost veterinary care program. Stacy and Dr. Brayshaw talk about how community cat management differs in a part of the country where frigid winter temperatures make life outside even more difficult for cats, and how this affects programs like return to field (RTF). They also discuss how AHS’s community cat program got started, and how they learned that running a targeted TNR program is not always as easy as identifying an area with a large human population, or even an area where most of your shelter intakes come from. As AHS has moved on from the initial years of their community cat program, TNR has become less of a focus, and instead they are spending more time and energy on RTF and on building relationships with members of community who are already working with cats, like caretakers and rescuers.
