Brainy: 14:50 Behind the Redwood Curtain: 26:21 What We're Learning from our Knitting Catherine is inches away from finishing her Metalouse shawl by Stephen West https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/metalouse. She used Woolemeise and Canon Dyeworks yarns. She is looking for a pattern for a sweater as her next project. Margaret didn't experience much learning but enjoyed a lot of satisfaction knitting her basic top down, heel flap socks using Online sock yarn in a multiple of colors: blue, grey, orange, yellow and pink. Although she has her own modifications, she basically follows Ann Budd's 6 stitches per inch sock. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/6-stitches-per-inch-sock. Margaret also applied several patches in old socks that were wearing thing. Brainy Thing: Catherine reports on studies that show the link with biodiversity in nature with human happiness. Finished Objects Erica The shawl!!!! Erica was so excited to finish her Half Pi Shawl. In Episode 1 she was swatching for this shawl! Erica has knit a few small shawls, but really wanted a really nice big shawl! She switched between Signature Needle Arts and Chiaogoo circular needles. Erica does love her Signature Needle Arts needles, but found the join on these difficult once the shawl got large and heavy. Erica would love to hear listeners tips for knitting from center pull balls. Do you knit from the center or the outside? Michelle Michelle has been going through some of her older hand spun yarn and setting the twist in it. She was particularly bad about wet setting a couple years ago and the wash is helping refresh the yarn as well. Some was balled up already so it had to be put back into skeins. She finally got the opportunity to use this beautiful Amish style swift that was made by a friend of her Mom's and gifted to Michelle. Works in Progress Michelle Michelle skirted and washed the fleeces she got from shearing day at Queso Cabeza farm. They are taking a long time to dry out in her garage in the cold weather. Erica Erica seems to have taken Michelle's spinning mojo, oops! Erica is back to spinning the Organic Polwarth in the Fractured Dawn colourway from Crafty Jax. Erica purchased 3 braids and decided to spin a 3 ply yarn. Fractured Dawn is a random colourway so each braid starts with a different color. So Erica split each braid into 3 carefully put each split into a ball, then put all 3 balls from the same braid in a bag together. Erica is spinning a single from braid one, then braid two, then braid three and will start over again to make up for not being able to randomize the singles when plying to help distribute any variance in the singles spinning. Erica is prepping the drawloom for her next warp. This will be a 4" warp sett at 60 epi (2/dent in a 30 epi reed). She is using the last of the Treenway Silks Bordello color yarn from her previous project. This will be woven into trim to use for her husband's garb, and probably some for herself too. Socks Erica currently has socks on the needle for everyone in her family! She is extending her previous sock study by trying toe up socks again and testing out different short row methods. She has cast on the second sock for Oli's second pair of socks. For this sock she used the toe up Ann Budd short row toe method. She cast on the first sock for TJ's second pair of socks. For TJ's sock Erica tried out the toe up German short row. Erica thinks TJ, yet again, picked the best color of all of us. Erica also cast on for her second pair of socks using the toe up wedge toe, which she was the very first type of toe construction she tried and did not initially fall in love with this method. She is enjoying testing out new methods and looking forward to finally settling on a method that she really likes. Finally, Erica bought the book Knitting Magic and plans to knit a Weasley Jumper for each member of her family. She started with TJ's jumper that is in Harrisville Highland Black and he chose Periwinkle for the contrasting color for his initial.

Finished objects: Michelle finished her Waffa bird. Erica finished the toe up socks (pictured below with TJ's thumbs up of approval). The toe up socks were knit in fingering weight yarn from Gynx Yarn, who is no longer dyeing. Erica also finished 1 of her the cuff down socks for TJ, but it did not receive a thumbs up and has now been frogged to be socks for herself! These socks were being knit in worsted weight yarn on 3.25 mm needles. Now that they have been frogged Erica has started a new pair of cuff down socks for herself! Michelle checked the drum carder out from the library again and finished carding two fleeces. The first is the llama fleece that she recently skirted. It was just too soft to send to the mill. She wishes you could feel how soft it is and really looks forward to spinning it. Michelle also finished carding an Icelandic fleece. As she was carding the fleece, she kept an eye out for nice locks to use in needle felting. She is planning to dye some of them. The locks from the same fleece are both straight and really curly depending where on the sheep they were. Both will work well for beards or hair. A jackpot of curls! The carded fleece ready to spin: Erica has finished combo plied yarns of the Lakeside colourway (below under works in progress on the left) and the Artic Berries colourway (below under Works in Progress on the right) with the Fractured Dawn colourway. Erica has cast on 2 new pairs of socks, a pair of fingering weight socks for TJ, since he did not like the worsted weight yarn on his feet and socks for herself out of the yummy worsted weight yarn. She is using Ann Budd's class on BluPrint to learn new heel and toe knitting techniques. Erica hopes to really feel like a true sock knitter someday! Erica has spun singles of the Lakeside Colourway (left), part of the Wool N Spinning Finn Breed and Colour Study. She has also spun singles of the Artic Berries colourway (right) for the same study. She is focusing on spinning up Lakeside and plans to make a 3 ply yarn in an attempt to keep the original colourway fairly pure. Giveaway winner! Thank you Kay for your comments on our Episode 9 post on FB. Michelle will be giving you some yarn to use in your crochet projects! We hope other listeners will comment on future posts, we really look forward to having more of a 2 way conversation with our listeners! Podcasts: Erica recently listened to the Power Purls podcast series on "Taming Your Time". She learned a lot from this podcast and is working on scheduling some actual downtime for herself! Erica also found the Ewe University podcast on lighting for crafting. She recommends this episode for those who are interested in further discussion of this topic!

Sweater fit, math for pattern modifications, and a way to help sheep farmers impacted by California wildfires add to the usual project updates in this episode. Join the Ewes for all this and more! For full show notes with links and pictures, go to twoewesfiberadventures.com Marsha's projects are her combo spin and a linen tee. The combo spin is almost finished and the yarn is really beautiful. She has selected a simple cardigan pattern and will talk more about that when she is ready to cast on. The yarn has a significant amount of silk in it and the feel is really luscious. The Summer Fjord linen tee is being bound off during the show. It is knit from Fibra Natura 100% linen yarn. Marsha had a mistake that she repaired by dropping about 5-6 stitches back a few inches and then reknitting only those stitches from the row. She has photos of the repair process on her project page in Ravelry. Kelly has three finished projects, including the Bobble Sheep pillow that she finished awhile ago, but forgot to talk about. A more recently finished pillow is the Clover, Bee, and Revery pattern. It has a fabric backing sewn on and two wooden bee buttons as a pillow back closure. This pillow has inspired her to make the Such is the Quality of Bees blanket out of the same yarn and using a doubleknit technique so that the front and back of the blanket both have the bee and rabbit pattern on them. Kelly also finished another pair of argyle socks. The yarn is sport weight, but knit up at the same stitch gauge as the socks she made from fingering weight yarn before. Marsha discusses a listener question about the math required to change a pattern when using a different gauge yarn. Another listener recommended Ann Budd's book, The Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns and The Knitter's Handy Book of Top Down Sweaters. Marsha also recommended the Craftsy class by Amy Herzog, Sweater Modifications for a Custom Fit. There are additional Craftsy classes on yarn substitution and sweater fit by Kellie Nuss and Sally Melville that look interesting. Marsha is also interested in taking a class called Sizing Knitwear Patterns by Faina Golberstein, who is also a math professor. Kelly discussed the impact of the California wildfires on sheep farmers and ranchers. One farm in particular--owned by Sally Fox, creator of Foxfibre colored cotton--was threatened by the County Fire. Her property escaped damage, but she shared the story of evacuation on Instagram and that made Kelly think about the financial impact even when the property is spared. Sally's company is Vreseis and it is dedicated to sustainable cotton production. She sells cotton yarn and fiber, merino yarn and fiber, cloth, and wheat flour--all from her farm. With a purchase from her shop or a click of her donation button you can assist with the additional expenses of the recent fire threat and do your part for World Fleece! Take some time to look at her website and read the story of her cotton-growing journey. In this episode, the girls talk deciding on a sweater size to knit. Susie chokes on alpaca fluff, and Danie is never gonna give up her sock. Miscellaneous mentions in the topic segment include the Twist Collective article on sweater ease and fitting, Susie's Hiro, and Ann Budd's gauge formula. Stuff & Things Thank you to Erin of Remade By Hand Designs for sending her new pattern Coloresque Wrap and Greg of Unraveling with Greg and Joey podcast (KnittingDaddy on Rav) for sending his new pattern Thundertwist. Susie's new pattern Endless Maze Socks will be released this week. Keep an eye on her Instagram feed for the announcement. Events Cori, one of the two Knit Cahoots behind Minnesota 52, will be at Imagiknit on September 25th for a book signing 4pm-5:30pm and then talking all about sweaters and making them fit 6pm-9pm. Also at Imagiknit, the girls will be having a pop-up on October 8th 1pm-4pm. Finished Projects Susie finished her second Roughlock Falls Shawl and it's uh-wow! Current Projects Danie worked a bunch on her Cattails and on her Downpour Socks. Susie worked on her Georgetown. She also cast on an Aviatrix hat out of Hikoo by skacel Sueño and a plain self-striping sock out of Coloring Book Yarns in the Winter Remix Hexi colorway.
Episode 19 - /16/17 It’s nice to be back. Thanks for your patience with my 2-week hiatus. I was only expecting to be away 1 week but sometimes life gets in the way. This weeks segments include FOs, Wips, Wearables, an extended Pattern Stalking segment in which we’ll discuss finding patterns that fit you, and On the Road as always this will be in 30 minutes or less. Warning, there’s also a brief history lesson on what an Acadian actually is. FOs I have 2! 2nd Hamilknit Hat by Emily of the Knitting Butterflies podcast Purple Hitchhiker by Martina Behm Wips Pink silk hitchhiker by Martina Behm (strichmick) for MiL for Christmas Empire Top by Lily Go for me, out of discontinued cotton/bamboo blend Picoboo by Frogtree Yarns – need to finish it by the 20th for Stash Dash! Only 1 sleeve to go, I can do this Triyang Shawl by Lee Meredith – haven’t done much on this, but I have done some and as the Knitmore’s say if I work on more than 1 stitch it gets listed here. Wearables Thoughts by Joji Locatelli made in Araucania’s Yumbrel Mommy’s Tunic in Juniper Moon Farm’s Neve Stash Birdie’s Knits Gradient Kit in colorway Denim for Days, pretty much every shade of bluejeans you can imagine, 400 yards total, 8 skeins of 50 yards each Try it On Room at SSK – what I learned/Pattern Stalking Preface by saying every pattern I mention is linked in the show notes I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but I learned this by trying on over a dozen hand-knit sweaters: What your eye likes may not be what fits you best. Let me repeat – WHAT YOUR EYE LIKES MAY NOT BE WHAT FITS YOU BEST For example, the Hitofude cardigan emphasizes your bust. It looks great on everyone with average busts, no matter what size your waist or hips because the unusual shape hides those to some degree. But if you have a large bust it’s like wearing a highlighter saying “look at my boobs”. Another popular top was Breathing Space – it looked great on lots of body shape, BUT, where the horizontal lines fell on your bust really changed the appearance. Bustier women liked it better having the diagaonal lines start as written, at the bust line, because it de-emphasized a large chest. Small/medium size busted women liked it to fall below the bust because the horizontal stripes helped balance their bust with their hips. Ann Budd’s skirt – never thought I’d want a knitted skirt, but the four sizes she brought looked good on everyone. And I mean EVERYONE, from the skinniest to the widest person the A-line cur flattered every single body shape I saw try it on Secret Garden Tank by Melissa Wehrle – the hidden lace panel at the back gives it a very flattering A-line Hitofude by Hiroko Fukatsu – want to knit this again after losing my first at an airport last year :( Vitamin D Cardigan - by Heidi Kirrmaier similar shape to Hitofude but hangs a little more straight up and down so you don’t get the bob-highlighting effect quite as much Hoodie Shawl Cardigan – Susanne Sommer – way more colors than I normally wear in one garment, but it looked great on me so maybe it’s time to branch out in my color choices Alice in Wonderland by Justyna Lorkowska – more fitted than I normally wear in a knitted garment but I was surprised how good it looked on me Dark and Stormy by Thea Coleman - I usually avoide shawl collars, but this one looked good on a lot of people with a lot of body shapes On the Road Spent a week in Nova Scotia, Canada visiting cousins. So nice, we hadn’t been back in nearly 3 years. Also, you need to visit Le Village Historique Acadien. In addition to great family history (for me, at least) there’s great examples of knitting and spinning from around the year 1900 and the food is AMAZING. I’m still wondering where that tradition went because I have no memories of my grandmere doing any knitting beyond functional knitting, such as dishcloths. Quilting, on the other hand, has a beautiful and celebrated history in the area and local quilt displays are a definite must-see! Warning, there’s also a brief history lesson on what an Acadian actually is. Here's a graphic of the Acadian Expulsion that I mentioned from the brand-new memorial, which shows where the Acadians were shipped off to.
Episode 14 – 6/22/17 Segments this week include Wips, Knitting Fail, Out and About, On the Run, In the Garden Recording late this week because family was up visiting. Wips Lots and lots! Had car trouble and a few doctor’s appointments which means I had some extra knitting time. Hitchhiker 1 – green Valley Yarns Greylock, 100% cashmere. About 85% complete. Can’t work a full point with the cashmere because it’s getting wider with each point, but getting a little done every day Hitchhiker 4 – purple Cascade Ultra Pima Fine 100% cotton about 25% complete. Bringing this one as purse knitting – even knitting on an exercise bike while warming up at physical therapy Stella Maris Shawl – gradient kit from Birdie’s Knits in the Ocean View colorway. Reached Chart 4 and color 6 of 8. Might not run out of yarn after all! 2nd Hamilknit Hat – husband’s coworker asked me to knit her one after seeing mine. She is lovely and knitworthy, so I’m about 40% done with it. And – bonus – I brought it into to Boston last Friday and she tried it on and it fit well! More on Boston later. Mommy’s Tunic – I started the cable band weeks ago but put it down to get other stuff done. Picked it up again this week and am about 75% done. Planning on finishing it tomorrow and picking up stitches for the bodice this weekend. Knitting Fail Twice in the last week I’ve had to unravel/frog the Stella Maris shawl. First time was last Saturday at knitting group. I dropped a stitch while chating with a former Nashville resident about my upcoming SSK trip and didn’t notice until the next row. Had to frog 3 rows. Got that back, was on the next-to-last row of Chart 4 and realized I’d dropped a stitch the row before. I spent 30 minutes trying to re-work it without frogging, because my last lifeline was the end of Chart 3. But no. Couldn’t quite do it. So I frogged rows 82-92. Argh! I’m back up to row 87 now and since the rows are so big I’m putting a lifeline in after every other RS row. I am not frogging 10 rows again – especially when there are only 98 rows, I was SOOOOOO close to finishing! Out and About Sail Boston! We went into Boston last Friday and saw many of the tall ships in town for the Sail Boston event. We started at the Aquarium (had to sneak in one last visit before our membership expired), visited my husband at his office, then walked the waterfront to see all the ships in South Boston. We even walked all the way to the huge Navy ship at Fort Point – if you know Boston, the USS Whidby Island was at the point north east of the cruise ship terminal. Yeah, my feet hurt a lot after all those miles. And yes, my PT wasn’t terribly thrilled with me. Upcoming events: I’ll be heading to Cape Cod to visit my parents for the 4th of July and checking out one of my favorite knitting stores, A Great Yarn in Chatham MA. It’s actually a yarn shop and book store. Be still my beating heart, it’s a perfect combination! I’ll be attending SSK retreat by The Knit Girllls in Nashville, TN July 20-23. Very excited! I’ve never been to a knitting retreat before and I am seriously looking forward to some relaxation, classes with Ann Budd and Lee Meredith, and lots of knitting and barbecue. In August I’ll be heading up to Nova Scotia, Canada to visit family. My Great Aunt is 103 and we haven’t been up to visit since she turned 100. Definitely time to go back and introduce Thing 2 to his cousins. On the Run I walked at least 7 miles in Boston last Friday, much to my physical therapist’s chagrin. But it did give us some important info. I’ve been an extreme overpronator my whole life, which means when I walk my ankles roll inward. With all the extra mobility and strengthening I suddenly found myself supinating – or having my ankles roll outward! So I’m testing walking around without my orthotic inserts and so far so good. Keep your fingers crossed. I would be so happy to be able to buy shoes and not worry about inserts any more. In the Garden Our first berries have ripened! We had about a dozen gooseberries. If you’ve never had a gooseberry, they’re hard to explain. They’re round and sort of greenish purple and make GREAT jam because they’re super sour. Eating them raw is an acquired taste but I grew up eating them at my grandparent’s place up in Nova Scotia. Homemade gooseberry jam is amazing. Our blueberries are getting close to ripening and we have tons of tiny raspberries on our bushes. After the drought of the past 2 years it is so nice to have a glut of berries again. Tomato plants on the deck have literally doubled in size this week what with all the sun. Maybe we’ll finally get some veggie garden crops soon too – all the cold rain last month stunted everything.
In this episode we talk about the Strungalong retreat that Kim attended where she got the opportunity to interview Ann Budd, and we talk about our knitting Howlers. I hope you enjoy the episode, happy knitting. You can find our show notes on our blog here!

Off The Needles Alpaca sox mini socks: reinforced heel, but the slipped stitches are placed in WS, not in RS as usual. Don't think it makes a difference, but interesting. I've been MLing exclusively when I knit socks, and I usually convert DPN patterns into ML. I never move my stitches around, but I realize something. Usually the toe on cuff down socks have 8 sts left before kitchenering, and in all my previous socks, The graft is placed horizontally. Only in the socks that I knit for Timothy using Ann Budd's recipe did I realize that if I move stitches around so the 4 paired decreases face each other, I get a toe that looks sturdier. It's very hard to describe intelligently >.

This week's episode has been sponsored by: New this week: Cascade Eco Alpaca, and dyed colors of Pure Alpaca, new certified Free Trade yarns from Frog Tree Alpaca, including the new Picaboo, bamboo, pima cotton, and Green Line DK and Worsted merino from Lorna's Laces. Administrative: (00:30) Knit's up has moved to Libsyn. If you're having problems updating your feeds, find our tutorial here. On the Needles: (2:00) Gigi is making good progress on her On the Vine scarf. Jasmin cast on a sock to chase away her bad knitting mojo. She is using the Abstract Fibers "Supersock" in Newport. (Jasmin and Gigi will be reviewing this yarn in a later podcast.) Jasmin also discusses working with the square knitting needles. Jasmin suggests that LYSes should have "tester" needles so that knitters can try them. (Jasmin refers to the Addi Turbo interchangeable review episode.) Gigi is working on the Par Five sock out of the brown Malabrigo Sock. Jasmin tries to understand golf. Gigi describes golf as "banhoff". The Knit(more)-A-Long! Jasmin's: Katarina (by CocoKnits), in Tess Yarns' Silk and Merino. (Jasmin is knitting hers in one piece, as opposed to the way that the pattern is written. She talks about how she blocked her Twist.) Jasmin is knitting this at a tighter gauge than is recommended in the pattern (Jasmin is knitting it at 5 sts/6 rows per inch) because she disagrees with both the math in the pattern, the schematic, and the gauge of the recommended yarn. Gigi's: Carli (by CocoKnits) in Malabrigo worsted, Burgundy. Gigi is matching gauge and knitting the pattern as it is written, thus far. They talk about substituting yarns and the need to occasionally recalculate a pattern. They also discuss picking colors. Mother Knows Best: (30:24) Gigi and Jasmin discuss warm weather knits; they LOVE the Tess Yarns' Microfiber Ribbon. Some of Jasmin's favorite patterns include the ribbed turtleneck (by Jill Ramos), the chevron ribbed tank by Ann Budd, and the perfect periwinkle turtleneck tube vest from Fitted Knits. Jasmin seals the end of the ribbon with Fray-Check, talks about the best way to wind it, Straw into Gold: (42:13) Jasmin is still spinning Talullah, she wants to knit something with cables (like Mariah). Jasmin talks about "swatching" your spinning. Jasmin is going to use her Maggie mini skein-winder to make tiny test skeins. Reviews: (46:10) They review the Malabrigo sock yarn. Four Knitmore thumbs up! They also review the Leslie Wind cable needle necklace. (Video tutorials can be found here.) Jasmin loved it, Gigi didn't.
This week we will have our second installment of author interviews. With us for Episode 16 is the delightful Ann Budd. A master knitter, author of numerous books and former editor of Interweave Knits... Ann has done it all! Ann's latest book is a comprehensive look at sock construction, gauge, design and execution.
I meet Ann Budd, former editor of Interweave Knits and talk about her projects, Grand Plan patterns, and KnitScene magazine.
