Gaslit Nation
What Does Russia Want with Puerto Rico?

Gaslit Nation

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2024 69:45

Russia's transnational crime syndicate uses our own weaknesses against us, to entrench their weaponized corruption. Take, for instance, the Act 22 tax loophole that lets rich Americans buy up land in Puerto Rico to avoid paying any money in federal taxes. It's called “trickle down theory,” but the locals call it gentrification and tax dodging. So why is RT (Russia Today) latching on to a grassroots campaign to close the Act 22 tax loophole threatening to turn Puerto Rico into a dangerous money-laundering vipers den, with no affordable housing? Could it be that Russia is trying to stop this movement by discrediting it?   Ringing the alarm on how the Act 22 tax loophole jeopardizes Puerto Rico's sovereignty and U.S. national security are Nomiki Konst, an activist and filmmaker, and Federico de Jesús, a public affairs consultant. They joined forces in Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria to launch "Losing Puerto Rico," a documentary-in-progress and movement by the same name against the Act 22 tax loophole. Konst, a longtime ally of Senator Bernie Sanders, chosen by Sanders to work on the unity commission for the DNC following the 2016 election, cut her teeth as an investigative journalist under Wayne Barrett, the first reporter to warn us about Trump. De Jesús, who helped lead Hispanic outreach in campaigns for President Barack Obama and Senator Harry Reid, focuses on human rights issues in Puerto Rico. They explain what's at stake with the Act 22 tax loophole, why Russia may have taken an interest, and their urgent advice for Biden on how to defeat Trump in the 2024 election, including how to win back Hispanic voters who have been trending Republican.    This week's bonus show, available to subscribers at the Truth-teller level or higher on Patreon, features the recording of the Gaslit Nation Make Art Workshop: The Business Side of Things, alongside the transcript. He spent 8 years touring the world with Ellie Goulding and also held down the low-end in Kyle Minogue's band for a year. He is often cited in lists of the world's greatest-tone alchemists such as Tim Lefebvre, Janik Gwizdala, and Steve Lawson. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

This week’s guest is Teddy Kumpel. Teddy is an amazing guitar player who lives in Brooklyn. He’s worked with people like Joe Jackson (he been in his touring band for the last few years), Rickie Lee Jones, Phil Lesh, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw, and a ton of other folks. He also has played on soundtracks to movies well all love like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and he’s also a great engineer.Teddy and I became friends sometime back 2013. He had this cool weekly residency at Rockwood Music Hall between 2011 and 2018 where he did this thing called the Loopestra. Basically, it was Teddy, his guitar, his voice and some looping equipment and he’d have a different rhythm section every week. There were no rehearsals. The idea was just to play. It was awesome to hear great bass players like Tim Lefebvre, Andy Hess, James Genus, Jonathan Maron, Fima Ephron, and great drummers like Aaron Comess, Shawn Pelton, Jojo Mayer, Aaron Steel, Josh Dion do their thing in the context of Teddy’s Loopestra.I had the honor of doing 2 of them. Many of those gigs are on YouTube. It’s a goldmine of stuff to check out.Teddy and I spoke a couple of weeks ago and here’s how our conversation went.

Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

In episode 8, I speak to Tim Lefebvre.Tim is one of my favorite bass players. Shit, chances are, he’s probably one of your favorite bass players.Throughout his wide-ranging career, Tim Lefebvre has amassed a reputation for being one of the world’s most innovative bassists. The Foxboro-native’s creative playing style is an addictive blend of jazz improvisation, rock undertones, and electronic grooves that can be heard on his appearances on over 150 recordings, ranging from Grammy award-winning albums such as David Bowie’s Blackstar to the soundtracks of classic films such as The Departed. From 2013 to 2018, Lefebvre was the bassist of the dynamic blues rock ensemble Tedeschi Trucks Band, and he can be heard on their three most recent releases, Let Me Get By (2016), Live From The Fox Oakland (2017), and Signs (2019). Before joining the group, he worked with artists such as Uri Caine, Chris Botti, and Leni Stern. Now based in Los Angeles, Lefebvre is currently the bassist for numerous groups, most notably with jazz-fusion guitarist Wayne Krantz, improvisational free-jazz group Whose Hat Is This?, and his Blackstar bandmate Donny McCaslin. He has recently performed with Chris Potter, Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Empire of the Sun, Carole King, Ben Platt, Knower, and Matisyahu as well. Lefebvre is also the producer for a diverse range of projects, which includes singer-songwriter Rachel Eckroth’s album When It Falls (2018). Through all of these experiences over the past two decades, Lefebvre has constantly expanded his musical artistry, discovering new sounds for the bass guitar and influencing a generation of musicians along the way.

Things are sounding good here in the studio and I’m excited to get some music back out into the world. It’s been six years since I released any proper records and they were both EP’s. But lemme tell you, it’s been a journey. I won’t talk too much about it now because I’m still finishing up the tracks and have to stay focused, but it feels like the right time. But you know, trying to go out as a so-called “artist” can be quite daunting even after you’ve given yourself permission to do it. Some might say that’s where our troubles begin: in identifying ourselves as “artists” with all the baggage that term implies in our creative landscape. But the workaround is to let yourself define what the word means to you. For example, in the music business, “Artist”, “Composer” and “Musician” are three distinct roles. Separate jobs. But you can be all three. I hate it though, when people dodge the distinctions and start to call us “creatives”. That’s a lazy poaching of an Ad industry term. The reality for most of us is that we have a demon inside of us that won’t let us rest until we find expression for something new, original and of our own making.Call yourself what you want, but don’t let that part of you fall asleep for too long.Which brings me to our guest of the hour. I’m a cello guy, and I’d like to reassure you non-cello people that we don’t get too deep into the weeds here. Fear not!One thing that happens though - if you really grab the cello and commit to it - is that you realize it’s just a giant doorway into music. There are so many possibilities that the instrument will offer an imaginative player and it really demands a lot of discipline from us. It definitely does not play itself, though you can get that impression when watching a truly great player. The thing about Artyom, though - and this is why I wanted to talk to him on the show - is that he incorporates a deep knowledge of music with a capital M. He is definitely not confined to the standard view of what the cello can or should do. He’s blazing a trail through the modern instrumental landscape and all kinds of important players are taking note. He tours with Melody Gardot as an integral band member. He gigs around LA with the coolest and most forward-thinking players on the scene, folks like Mark De Clive-Lowe, Kamasi Washington, Flying Lotus, Tim Lefebvre and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. He just went to play on the Blue Note cruise, man!So he’s totally made it out of the cello crab-bucket, and that’s a thing we all can get behind. I’m super privileged to present my interview with the fantastic and fascinating Artyom Manukyan. As always, if you like the show, please tell a friend and help us spread the word. Emily Zuzik's career in the performing arts is a study in diversification. At varying times, she can call herself a singer, songwriter, guitarist, actress and model - and she has had success at each of these related-but-distinct pursuits. Zuzik has released several records of her own music that range in style from a Sheryl Crow-esque rootsy-rock vibe to a hip-hopping blend of Aimee Mann, Alanis Morissette and Beck. Her vocals have been heard on NBC, WB Interactive and she has collaborated with Moby and sung with Blue Man Group. Her newest project is an EP of electronic music called Angelenos created with Tim Lefebvre that is reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan-fronted Massive Attack. No matter the genre, it's Zuzik's dynamic voice that ties it all together, ranging from a sweet melody to a sultry sneer in a matter of beats. Zuzik somehow even found her way onto a book cover; you can see her likeness wearing a bikini and wielding a spear gun on the cover of a now-out-of-print Penguin Paperback edition of James Bond's Thunderball. As if all these accomplishments weren't enough, Zuzik proudly bears the self-appointed title of 'Rocker Mom,' which means that aside from following her muse and sharing her gifts as a musician, she has the most important job of all. Because anyone who knows anything about moms knows that it's a 24/365 gig.

By Curtis Killian | February 10, 2016 When Donny McCasslin '88 and his jazz quartet were enlisted by David Bowie H'99 to record as the backing band for what became his 25th and final album Blackstar, stylized as ★, the Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer and bandleader was ready for the moment. "David encouraged us to try anything and everything that we heard," McCaslin says on the three weeks he spent working with Bowie and his longtime producer Tony Visconti early last year, recordingmostly live with his group (keyboardist Jason Lindner, drummer Mark Guiliana and bassist Tim Lefebvre). "He said something to me in the beginning like, Donny, I don’t know what’s gonna happen with this but let’s just have some fun." A fixture of the New York Jazz scene for nearly thirty years, McCaslin has worked as bandleader and as sideman for the likes of Steps Ahead, Maria Schneider Orchestra and professor fellow alumnus Gary Burton '62, who he began touring with his senior year. "Being at Berklee and thrust into this world where the boundaries of music or styles were pretty fluid, that was really a great experience to help me to broaden my musical language," McCaslin says, a dexterity clearly displayed through his various contributions on Blackstar as musician, bandleader and orchestrator. "I’m grateful to have been able to be in that space for a prolonged amount of time in relation to the jazz world," McCaslin says. "The joy on David’s face when we would have that take and felt it, everybody was feeling that it was the take and seeing the joy on his face was very moving to me. It was beautiful." In this episode of Life After Berklee, just weeks after the album's release and shock of Bowie's death, McCaslin shares insight into the recording process and how he and his jazz quartet from New York City became David Bowie’s final backing band. https://www.berklee.edu/news/podcast-donny-mccaslin-88-david-bowie

Rudder's new album is called Matorning (Nineteen-Eight Records, 2009). These four musicians are incredibly busy in the jazz and pop worlds, but they've found the time to create a hip-shaking, brain-stimulating musical hybrid that some critics have said is in a genre all by itself.
