Welcome back to Beautiful Inside. Today, I'm chatting with the fabulous Jodie Matthews, founder of ashaya. Now, this episode is extra special as it ties into Menopause Awareness Month, which is something I've personally been navigating as I enter perimenopause. I've had physical symptoms—from anxiety to gastrointestinal issues—that I didn't even realise were related to peri! I've known Jodie for years from when she was heading up MAC Cosmetics and she has always been someone who leads with passion and purpose. I caught up with her recently and was really inspired by how she has approached this new phase in her life and I wanted to get a different perspective for dealing with peri and menopause. In this episode, she opens up about the struggles she faced, and how those personal experiences drove her to start ashaya—a brand that's all about supporting women through every stage of life. From the mental health side to physical transformations, we dive deep into how we can all navigate these changes with knowledge, compassion, and a bit of humour. And because we love to spoil our Beautiful Inside community, we're partnering with ashaya for a fabulous giveaway. Stay tuned for details on our Instagram account. Whether you're in the midst of your own perimenopause journey, or just want to be better prepared for what's ahead, this conversation is a must-watch. Have you ever heard of sunglasses made out of your packet of chips? Here's the man who's made that a reality for the first time ever globally by launching Without by Ashaya, a waste management company looking to empower waste pickers in India by turning trash into treasure. Anish Malpani tells me how these sunglasses are made to show the world what is possible if waste gets recycled in the right way. He talks to me about his journey from being a Dubai kid to pursuing finance in the US and coming back to India. His journey of becoming an entrepreneur, investing years in research, dealing with ambiguity, and taking calculated risks is nothing short of great and this week he is all set to feature on Shark Tank as well. From giving financial advice to social enterprise entrepreneurs in Guatemala, to becoming one himself, Anish Malpani's journey has been rewarding, not just to the waste-pickers in India, but to the planet. A former finance professional left his lucrative job in New York to start ‘Ashaya,' a social enterprise that helps increase the value of waste though deep tech solutions. One such solution is their brand ‘WITHOUT,' that provides sunglasses made from recycled plastic packets. Join us as we explore Anish's story of finding unique solutions to several problems we face today by tapping into the potential of waste.
In this episode, I invited Anish Malpani - Founder of Ashaya, a non profit organization that functions with a simple vision : 'To recycle the worst kind of plastic waste while empowering waste pickers'. Multi-layered plastics (also known as MLP) is one of the hardest plastics to recycle. It continues to overburden our landfills. Destroys marine life when discarded in the oceans. Recycling MLP is tough, so much so that no one wants to invest their time & money to do it. Anish - saw that as an opportunity. An opportunity to solve a really difficult problem. Ashaya set up a lab in Pune and through a LOT (really a lot!) of research and continuous testing + iterations, they've developed the technology to recycle MLP. I had an amazing time talking to Anish about his journey & about the impact Ashaya is creating, all the while going through an introspection myself. We spoke about a range of topics on this episode like: (00:00): Making sunglasses from a packet of chips – LIKE WHAAAT? (02:21): Why are other people NOT recycling multi-layered plastics (MLP)? What's the hold up? (04:28): Why would you pay a premium to buy MLP when you can get it for free? Anish convinces the Finance geek within me as to why! (08:56): MAJOR TURNAROUND: Transition from a guy climbing the corporate ladder a guy focused on creating maximum impact. (23:47): Zeroing in on the niche to get into in the impact space. (35:20): When did the action begin? How do you FUNDAMENTALLY increase the value of waste? (44:56): BUILDING THE TECH: To recycle something that is impossible to recycle. (51:10): Other value-added products in the pipeline from recycled MLP. (53:56): Did Anish ever feel like calling it quits & throwing in the towel? (59:00): WASTE PICKERS: Lives that Ashaya is touching [and substantially changing] (1:11:53): Is the GoI providing any subsidies for developments in the waste management space? (1:15:38): EXPANSION PLANS: How does the long-term game look like for Ashaya? (1:20:02): The story behind the name & introducing a D2C brand called ‘Without' Have you tried their sunglasses that are made out from a packet of chips? If not - grab them here

That being said, it’s sometimes fun to see how far you can push the limits. Also, it’s often nice to have an assortment of different power levels, so that you can play in any pod, and maybe also great if it’s the end of the evening, and you don’t quite have time for a longer game. A deck that brushes up against cEDH. Maybe a 1-or-2 holds barred instead of no holds barred? A deck that tries to be super powerful, while remaining just shy of cEDH. Disclaimer: Neither Zack nor Ryan are cEDH experts, so we may get some of this wrong, but we think it’s a useful framework for a discussion What is a “High Powered Deck”? This might be a way to intentionally restrain yourself, and as we know restrictions can breed creativity Cheap Interaction Most decks play some of this already, example: Swords to Plowshares Stuff like Winter Orb and Armageddon, or wheels + Hullbreacher/Narset, Parter of Veils Stax pieces Stuff like Aven Mindcensor or Dranith Magistrate Hate Bears I think you can include some of the above in any of the variations of Pick 2, although you always want to make sure you’re having the Rule 0 discussion, especially if going the Stax route! cEDH is built upon a few different pillars. The 3 we just mentioned are probably some of the most important. Here are some others Fast Mana/Tutors/Combo: Pick 2 I thought it might be fun for us to power rank the different variations on the fly, so listed in no particular order are Fast Mana + Tutors Fast Mana + Combo Tutors + Combo Which to choose? Fast Mana + Combo This seems like one of the more difficult builds to pull off. You’ll want to have lots of different redundant combos, because without tutors, you may not see all the right pieces Lots of card draw to help you assemble your combo pieces Also, self mill can be a way to “virtually draw” a lot of cards if you have lots of ways to recur things from your graveyard Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Phyrexian Devourer Niv-Mizzet (Parun or Firemind) + Curiosity Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host This might also include a deck that has a single card combo with the Commander This would be a deck that tutors for answers to specific board states, it doesn’t tutor for combo pieces. Sometimes a deck may want to include a lot of fast mana if the “Mana Value” of the Commander is medium to high. Some of my first Commander decks were this way, with a TON of tutors, and lots of mana rocks/dorks, and just general good stuff, or cards that had high synergy with the Commander. This is the type of deck where you really restrict yourself from playing any combos, and you get super sad when you accidentally find a combo. Fast Mana + Tutors I think this one depends on where you draw the line for “Fast Mana”. Does Sol Ring Count? Signets? Normal Commander Ramp? This one might be the closest to cEDH, especially depending on how cheap the combo pieces are (Think Thassa’s Oracle + Demonic Consultation) I think most players will allow for normal commander ramp in this category. Personally, I think Tutors and Combo should be the strongest of the options, but in my experience it’s not always worked out. I think the density of combos and tutors you are running factors in here as well. If you’re running like one combo and two ways to tutor it, you’re probably going to have a rough time. Tutors + Combo Zack Yawgmoth has tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Grim, Recurring Insight, Doomsday) and combos. Aetherfux/Bolas’ Citadel/Divining Top. The only “fast mana” I run is Sol Ring, etc. Thrasios / Tormod has combos, but no form of fast mana or tutoring. I’ve considered making this sultai and adding tutors. I just brewed Samut, Voice of Dissent after watching Joe Johnson play his version on “I Hate Your Deck” Normally, I pull back quite a bit on cards I include in a deck. For example, Survival of the Fittest and/or Worldy Tutor would probably be quite good in my Ashaya, Soul of the Wild deck, but I chose not to include them. I decided I really wanted to go all-out on the Samut deck, so it’s got all kinds of nice cards in it. I intentionally avoided combos, so no Kikki-Jikki + Felidar Sovereign. This deck falls into the “Fast Mana + Tutors” permutation I’ve got Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter as mentioned above My Winota, Joiner of Forces is close to cEDH, but mostly just in how quickly it can win. It’s got a decent amount of Fast Mana, and has so many token generators, that it consistently has a lot of creatures to attack and get Winota triggers with that it feels “combo-y” Emry has “Fast Mana + Combo” Ryan Let’s see if any of our decks fall into this category! Let’s talk about what the different variations might look like Main Topic - High Powered Decks Summary - We hope you found this an interesting way to think about decks on the more powerful side of the EDH spectrum.Do you have any builds that fit squarely into one of the 3 variations we outlined? For some folks it’s almost a thought experiment. We’re interested in figuring out what exactly pushes us over the edge, to turn one of those thought experiments into reality. I used to do this all the time, when I was a kid, scrawling notes/decklists into the margins of notes I was taking in class. This is one of the coolest things about Magic, the fact that there’s so much meta knowledge to explore. Also, having access to card databases, and the internet, in our pockets really makes this easy I totally did this too. I remember building shells of decks and just thinking about cards to fill other slots. I had a notebook and everything. I actually do both of these! I wonder how many folks out there do both? Is it like a 50/50 split, or do most folks out there build one way like 90% of the time? Let us know on Social Media! I do both as well. I’ll get something laid out online and then once i have all the cards in front of me I build the deck and it’s never exactly the same. There’s something that makes this feel like old-school Magic, where you just kinda build with what you have I just go through good stuff boxes and look for things, ie my kenrith deck. We’ve even talked about “Found Decks” on the show before. Conversely, some people don’t even actually brew until they have all the cards in front of them. I’ve definitely done this both ways What percentage of decks that you brew do you actually build in paper? I think it might be interesting to see who out there are the dreamers/brewers. I know for me this varies wildly over time, and depends on my mood/life situation. Is it when a new Commander gets previewed during preview season? Is it when you read an article, listen to a podcast, or watch a youtube video? Do you sometimes just flip through cards, and get inspiration? Did you get inspired while playing a game of commander? Maybe it’s been so many months since you last built a deck? Maybe you get inspired while taking one of your old decks apart? A fever dream late at night? Got 50$ burning a hole in your pocket? Or maybe you got a giftcard to your LGS? Maybe you need some content for your podcast? We wanted to explore what exactly it takes for us to go over the threshold, and physically build a new deck in paper Maybe some folks have a lot more time, because they are stuck at home? The economy has been hit really hard, so maybe folks don’t have the resources to buy cards for new decks Tangent: How many new physical paper card players do you think we’ve gotten during the pandemic? Ryan’s New Decks Winota, Joiner of Forces Inspired by an episode that we recorded: “Decks outside our comfort zone - ep 49” I think this one was born out of playing on Arena, or rather, that’s the final thing that nudged me over the edge. Rielle, the Everwise Inspired by an article by (@blairwitchgreen) https://articles.starcitygames.com/premium/commander-top-10-ashaya-soul-of-the-wild/ Ashaya, Soul of the Wild Braid-drazi Build from the ashes of emry Brokkos just wasn’t doing it for me. Kinnan Infect Zack’s New Decks I thought it might be interesting to talk about what got us to build each of the decks we’ve built during the pandemic. Ryan Sisay Shrines Mina and Denn Gruul Planeswalkers Moist Naya Omnath Greven, Predator Captain Zack Decks we brewed but didn’t build: Ryan’s Stable Decks Gonti, Lord of Luxury Inspired by playing against someone (Henry Stukenborg) Inspired by a random thought: “Could I build a mono-red, OPC deck? Which commander would I use? Grenzo exists?!?! Let’s do this!” Grenzo, Havoc Raiser Definitely inspired by preview season (and my love for the morph mechanic) Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer Inspired by watching Jumbo Commander content Braids, Conjurer Adept Inspired by art, had lots of Chandras in the deck Article about Planeswalker Uniqueness rule going away (August 28, 2017) https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/ixalan-mechanics Original built in 2015, the deck got a shot in the arm mid 2017 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage Niv-Mizzet Built in the fall of 2018 when Guilds of Ravnica came out. It started as a fun spell slinger brawl deck, but when I realized the potential in full on EDH I built it and the rest is history. Built in the fall of 2019 after m20 came out. Inspired by my Muldrotha found deck that had a lot of cool etb effects and my love of landfall. Yarock Built in June 2019 when Modern Horizons came out. I’ve always been all about phyrexia, so i figured I’d build it for fun. Also my first mono colored deck. Yawgmoth Built earlier this year around Jan or Feb I had always wanted to build a five color commander. When I built it, I used only what I had which were “good stuff boxes” and ended up packing it full of cards that didn’t really fit elsewhere. Now it’s kind of the junk draw of my collection. Kenrith There are other decks, but they are currently being revamped. Zack’s Stable Decks Might also be interesting to go through each deck in our stables, to see what pushed us over the edge to build them Is it harder to get motivated to build a deck during a pandemic? Biding your time - I tried to play Yarok to set up a play for the next turn, but the board got wiped. If I had waited two turns I could have played Palichron and Yarok in the same turn to get infinite mana to Villainous Wealth. Zack Gets It Together We always find it interesting to reflect inwards, and see what is truly motivating our choices. Do folks out there enjoy episodes like this? How many decks have you physically built during the pandemic? What percentage of decks that you brew see the light of day? Summary Main Topic - What does it take for YOU to build a deck? Read Ashaya https://articles.starcitygames.com/premium/commander-top-10-ashaya-soul-of-the-wild/ I was inspired to build this by an article Bennie Smith wrote for Star City games (@blairwitchgreen) Disclaimer: My list is very much untuned. I’ve played it exactly once, and haven’t made any changes to it. https://scryfall.com/@greenegeek/decks/2594bc20-fa13-4abf-80c0-d4f37d7957c8 My list: I have a mono-colored deck of every other color and had been toying around with the idea of a mono-green deck, my previous thought had been a Pir, Imaginative Rascal, Super Friends deck. So, I was pretty much primed to build a mono-green deck. I had Titania, Protector of Argoth, and it was good, but people didn’t much like playing against it (and it was pretty linear). I also had a Yeva, Nature’s Herald deck (because OF COURSE I did). It was fine too, pretty much a good stuff deck, but I didn’t really enjoy playing it that much. I have been wanting to build a mono-green deck for some time now. Let’s talk for a few minutes about how awesome mono-colored decks are. So much room for utility lands! I’m running 7 Utility lands that do NOT tap for green. Restrictions breed creativity. There’s just a lot of things you can’t do in a mono-colored deck (although Green is one of the better ones I think). Lots of basics, and lots of ways to fetch basics! Ashaya does something new/unique. I remember when the card was spoiled, people were like “Yeah, now I don’t care about my opponents playing Cyclonic Rift.” I remembered agreeing with that point, but also noting that they probably just wouldn’t play it, or would deal with Ashaya first. I hadn’t thought about the other side of this coin, but we’ll get to that later. It’s really fun just thinking about all of the crazy things you can do in this deck, and imagining all of your creatures as lands. Why is this deck awesome/something listeners would want to play? Average CMC 3.56 (I might try to bring this down some) 8 Mythic 44 Rare 18 Uncommon 7 Common --- 37 Creatures 1 Planeswalker 8 Artifacts 5 Enchantments 5 Instants 4 Sorceries 39 Lands Stats Greater Good (Oh man this card was NUTS when I played the deck. Along with Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar) Return of the Wildspeaker Great Henge Guardian Project Rishkar’s Expertise Beast Whisperer Card Draw Early creatures are super good because they give you a chance to “setup” for the turn when you play your Commander. Arbor Elf Beanstalk Giant Wood Elves Harvest Season - Imagine the MCL of having 3 early creatures, say Wall of Blossoms, Wood Elves, and Elvish Reclaimer out. Casting your Commander on Turn 4 (thanks Wood Elves!) and then tapping your 3 creatures to cast Harvest Season, and fetching up 3 Lands. I’m not sure this card is great in here (Might be better in a token deck), but I’ve always wanted to try it out. Green Sun’s Zenith to go get Dryad Arbor (This was great with Guardian Project in play!) Ramp Magus of the Candelabra Untapping lands (especially more than one at a time) Oblivion Stone Boompile Sword of Feast and Famine Take advantage of all your creatures being lands (this is the other side of the Cyclonic Rift, that I hadn’t considered, running these in your deck, and being proactive with the effect) Titania, Protector of Argoth - Hard to wrath if this AND your commander are out. Gaea’s Liege - I’ve always loved this card, and you can do some broken stuff with it and Leyweaver Sylvan Safekeeper is a creature sac outlet in this deck. It’s super good in here! Sylvan Advocate is a 2 mana 4 / 5 that double anthems your whole team! Quirion Ranger - Imagine Bouncing your Eternal Witness to Untap your Gaea’s Liege. Or your Wall of Blossoms to untap your Ulvenwald Tracker Scryb Ranger Temur Sabertooth Reusing Enters the Battlefield triggers Cloning your creatures with Vesuva! I did the fun thing, I cast Ulvenwald Hydra, got a Vesuva to copy the Hydra, and then with the hydra-copy, fetched up Reliquary tower (because I had Greater Good in play) Fun stuff So what do you think about this deck? Does it sound fun? Are there any spicy cards you would include? Let us know! Summary Main Topic - Ashaya, Soul of the Wild Keep it Social! While Aziz and Ashaya host a livestream every week going through ASOIAF chapter by chapter, I will be uploading a weekly companion podcast exploring all the notes there just wasn't time to get to on the live stream. It's been an absolute please helping Aziz and Ashaya analyse the early Game of Thrones chapters, but sometimes there is just too much. So whenever there are too many of my notes to fit in, here the Isle of Faces is to help out. This week, in part 3 of the re-read, I go through the extra notes for the following chapters: Tyrion I Jon II Daenerys II Eddard II Tyrion II Catelyn III & Sansa I Check out History of Westeros for the live streams and main analysis, plus how to get involved with the Flick community: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guXacEX1_sQ

Despite its nefarious subtitle, this week's episode of The Comics Alternative is all-age friendly! In it you'll hear Andy and Derek discuss the shapely offerings in the May Previews catalog. They highlight the various sexy solicits from Dark Horse (Smoke/Ashes, The Best of Milligan and McCarthy, Sin Titulo, and Gamma), curvaceous tomes from DC/Vertigo (Batman '66, Collider, Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril, and The Unwritten: Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice), come-hither titles from IDW (The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror, Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction!, Doctor Who, Series III, Vol. 2: The Eye of Ashaya), drool-inducing images from Image Comics (Satellite Sam, Ghoster, Sheltered, Kafka, and Masks and Mobsters), alluring visuals from Abrams (Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales, Vol. 3: The Donner Dinner Party), exotic bodies of work from Action Lab Entertainment (Molly Danger and Skyward), bodacious books from Boom! Studios (Day Men, Adventure Time: Summer Special, and Adventure Time: Candy Capers), provocative forms from Conundrum Press (Paul Joins the Scouts), voluptuous offerings from Fantagraphics (Child of Tomorrow! and Other Stories, VIP: The Mad World of Virgil Partch, and The Daniel Clowes Reader), seductive stuff from First Second (The Death of Haggard West, Genius, and Templar), inviting packages from Improper Books (Porcelain: A Gothic Fairy Tale), arousing entertainment from Oni Press (Stumptown, Vol 2, and The Strangers), and titillating titles from Top Shelf (Monster on the Hill and God Is Disappointed in You). The Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics then go off on a tangent involving racy manga, erotic art, and Internet porn. And they're not proud of that fact. How did they reach this low point? You'll have to listen to the podcast and learn that answer for yourself!
