Matchday 1, our first set of episodes of the African Five-a-side podcast, takes a look at African football's most influential politicians. Before we name the five most important politicians in African football history, we will draw up a list of honorable mentions. The father of Nigerian nationalism, Nnamdi Azikiwe, is the first name on the team sheet. In this episode, we dissect how he used the media and his own sports club to galvanize support for Nigerian independence during the goodwill tours of 1941 and 1942.Algeria's first president, Ahmed Ben Bella, takes up a seat next to Azikiwe. Ben Bella was a footballer in his local city of Maghnia prior to the Second World War. When the war broke out, Ben Bella was stationed in Marseille. Prior to heavy fighting, he displayed his skills at the military base. His performances earned him a cameo with Chateau-Gombert and Olympique de Marseille.Muammar Gaddafi is the final man on the bench. Although he wasn't the biggest football fan, there can be no denying that he understood how to instrumentalize football to serve his own political machinations. Professional sport was banned during the first years of his reign, and it only returned under certain conditions. According to legend, in his inaugural address during the opening ceremony of the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations, Gaddafi finished his speech curtly: “Now, I leave you with your stupid game.”So that's the eclectic group of fellows that make the bench of our first Five-a-side team.

As global attention turns to France's intricate involvement in African affairs, Abayomi Azikiwe's forthcoming interview with Detroit is Different provides a captivating insight into the historical and contemporary dynamics underpinning France's presence in Africa. A seasoned analyst and the mind behind the Pan African News Wire, Azikiwe delves into the complex relationship between France and its former African colonies, shedding light on the motivations driving France's actions on the continent. Detroit is Different's feature meticulously traces the roots of France's colonial history, a legacy that remarkably stretches across continents and centuries, even encompassing the city of Detroit in the United States. Azikiwe unveils the intricate connection between colonial undertakings and contemporary conflicts, highlighting how this history reverberates in the present day. Central to the discussion is France's insatiable thirst for African resources, an exploitative trend that dates back to colonial times. Former French president Jacques Chirac "without Africa, France will slide down into the rank of a third [world] power," March of 2008. French President François Mitterand "Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century," 1957. The interview brings into sharp focus the recent developments in Niger, a West African nation currently at the forefront of conflict with France. The suspension of Niger's constitution and the dissolution of institutions following a military coup underscore the nation's determination to assert its autonomy over its abundant natural resources, particularly its significant uranium reserves, ranked seventh largest globally. This valuable radioactive metal serves as a cornerstone for various industries, including nuclear energy, cancer treatment, naval propulsion, and weaponry. Azikiwe exposes the historical narrative behind Niger's natural resource industry, revealing how French corporations have dominated this sector, leaving the nation's government with only minority holdings. The struggle for self-determination in Niger represents a wider sentiment across other West African nations once colonized by France, as they rally behind Niger's bid to break free from neo-colonial shackles. As the interview unfolds, Azikiwe's expertise navigates the nuanced layers of France's engagement in Africa, encapsulating not only the historical context but also the contemporary complexities surrounding economic exploitation and political autonomy. This preview only scratches the surface of the profound insights that Detroit is Different's conversation with Abayomi Azikiwe promises to unveil, offering a platform to understand the intricate web of power, resources, and history woven between France and its African counterparts. A 32-year-old drug trafficker based in Liberia, Maduabuchi Chinedu, has been arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).Maduabuchi was arrested with 9.30 kilograms of cocaine worth over N2.7 billion in street value. The suspect, who hails from Obaha Okigwe village, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo state, lives in Liberia where he works as a miner. He was arrested during an inward joint search of Ethiopian Airlines flight 911 at the Abuja airport on Wednesday with 9.30kg cocaine with each pellet wrapped in candies wraps and concealed in his luggage.During his preliminary interview, Maduabuchi stated he left Nigeria in 2018 to settle in Liberia where he now has a residence permit. Notwithstanding, He argued that economic pressure and the need to raise money to treat his mother for an eye problem led him to seek help from a friend in Liberia.According to him, the friend introduced him to another friend based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia who eventually gave him the drug to deliver in Abuja for a fee of N1 million.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, babyyyyyyyy. It’s the lucky thirteenth episode of the DSA Podcast, starring your pals Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe. To celebrate, the power trio ripped into some of the most important topics of the day including Jeff Bezos delivering packages to the moon, raccoon roommates, fighting a cat, Alec Baldwin sightings, and more. The outro music is “True Romance” by Tiger Army.
Azikiwe is finally back from his travels all around North America, so it’s time for another installment of everybody’s favorite podcast within the podcast, the DSA Podcast (Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe). With the remake of “Pet Sematary” dropping this week, we thought it only appropriate to do a comprehensive review of the original film that is now 30 years old. We also learn a lot about different types of domestic pet breeds! Fuck it all, baby! The outro music is “Pet Sematary” by Ramones.
With partial federal government shutdown over, the Humor and the Abject furlough comes to an end. We’re kicking off 2019 with the 11th episode of the podcast within the podcast, the DSA Podcast, which stands for Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe. Get yourself into the groove of reopened national parks, a funded TSA, and federal I-9 work verifications courtesy of a conversation blossoming with 2019 predictions, Stephen King lore, the hottest Ja Rule takes, over-participation in contemporary art exhibitions, and getting kicked out of bars. The outro music is “Am I Evil?” by Extreme Animals.
Humor and the Abject is taking a little holiday break, but to celebrate the end of 2018, it’s episode 10 of the podcast within the podcast, The DSA Podcast (Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe). On this Christmas-themed episode, the comrades discuss their holiday plans, recent encounters with cinema, a super obscure book about Jesus that Darice has, screaming tips, the upcoming season of True Detective, and they even do a little bit of radio theater for your listening pleasure. The outro song is “Silver Bells” by Twisted Sister. See you in 2019.
Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe are back for another podcast-within-the-podcast, and this time they’re talking about cheese—and animals! The outro music is “Cheese Roll Call” from Pinky and the Brain.
The DSA Podcast is back and bicoastal! If you count the Gulf of Mexico as one of the two coasts, that is. Your trusted hosts—Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe—are back after a brief hiatus to bring you all the hottest takes on things that have almost no impact on your everyday life. And it’s the introduction of a brand new game never before played on the pod. The outro music is “Jumpers” by Sleater-Kinney.

Seven is God’s number, and the seventh episode of the DSA Podcasts is positively divine. This time around, Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe have another pointless conversation, this time regarding Hawaii’s Big Island, bogs, the Hamptons, wedding DJs, people who get fired from their jobs because of social media, Bernard Sanders, The Wing, regional museums, container vendor Storables, the Vietnam War, how House ripped off Becker, and Tinder. The outro song is “Harrison Bergeron” by Snapcase.
Happy Knife Month, screedlers! On this episode of the DSA Podcast, Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe got together to talk about their shared love of knives, and further covered topics as diverse as parental sex, what’s in the fucking news, why Thomas J Gamble is a style icon, Mystic River, the greatest breakups of 2013, astrological signs, True Detective, Eminem’s sobriety, Darcie’s recent hangout with the Greenpoint police, Cartman impressions, and brrrrrup-a-ting-wah! The outro music is “Carpe Diem” by Nerve Agents.
We've UNLOCKED the latest episode of The DSA Podcast (Darcie, Sean, and Azikiwe), the podcast within the podcast, usually only available to our Drip subscribers. On this very public episode, we discussed Darcie's new dog psychic, explored the lyricism of the Mars Volta and At the Drive-in, learned about what Azikiwe's been eating, and staged a heated debate on the politics surrounding parental leave. To hear all other DSA episodes, subscribe on Drip! The outro music is the first four minutes of the thirty-two minute Mars Volta song "Cassandra Gemini." LMAO.
To celebrate my big birthday, artistic and curatorial duo Loney Abrams and Johnny Stanish stopped by and talked about the history of their alternative exhibition platform, Hotel Art. We discussed the project’s formation, its various nontraditional installations, the recent construction of a shed-as-gallery in their backyard, finding primary audiences online, working with established and emerging artists, whether or not experimental physical gallery spaces have any future in New York, and the value of advocating for a presentation model that can be practiced by practically anyone regardless of their geographical location. We also caught up on their recent collaborative studio projects that are engaging ideas about genetic modifications in humans and the complicated future that these scientific breakthroughs present to the public. I made them play a new game called “What is the Critical Question This Sculpture is Posing?” and they were like okay at it, but rudely pointed out that these were just jokes I came up with that were too long to tweet. Subscribe to Humor and the Abject on Drip: https://d.rip/humorandtheabject In another exclusive episode for our Drip subscribers, Darcie Wilder and Azikiwe Mohammed dropped by to talk about the stupid amount of media that each of us has been consuming now that it’s winter. We learned that Azikiwe once had a treehouse, that Darcie spent her entire freshman year of undergrad without speaking to her dorm roommate, Sean’s history with DVDs of the Notre Dame Marching Band, our favorite and our most-despised karaoke jams, the occult origins of the television program “House,” which mainstream sitcoms are better than okay, why UCB moving onto Darcie’s block means that improv is (actually) all around, and why everyone is the Unabomber.
TEASER: Full episode available to Drip subscribers... Friends of the podcast Darcie Wilder and Azikiwe Mohammed came by this week to record the first of an ongoing, Drip-exclusive project: The DSA Podcast. I assigned watching “Jim & Andy” to everyone and we talked about it a little bit but mostly focused on people sucking dick while their man plays 2K, that time Fugazi covered “Red Red Wine” live, a steampunk event that Azikiwe attended, white rap music of the early aughts, getting addicted to nose spray, the millennial whoop, Darcie’s new tattoo, Holocaust documentaries, how tiny James Lipton is, and a whole lot more. This episode is 100% sponsored by the lovely subscribers to our respective Drip profiles. Join, or die. Subscribe to Humor and the Abject on Drip for the full episode: https://d.rip/humorandtheabject

“I don't think that situation is going to be resolved anytime soon. The French went in, nearly two years ago. They were claiming that their operation would only be for a few months and in fact now it's approaching two years. So, I don't think that they really have a good grasp on what is going on inside the country… I think the actual wealth of that nation is significant in terms of the overall West Africa region.” -Abayomi Azikiwe This week returns listeners to the West African nation of Mali. In early 2012, the Tuareg people led a revolt against the Malian government with the intent of seizing control of the Northeastern region known as the Azawad. [1] In March 2012, the Malian President, Amadou Toumani Touré, was ousted in a military coup, reportedly due to his poor handling of the situation. [2] The following month, The Tuareg dominated National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in alliance with the extremist Islamist group Ansar Dine, succeeded in wresting Azawad from Malian government control and declared it an independent State. [3] Over the summer months however, the MNLA lost control of much of Azawad to the Islamist groups. [4][5] Following appeals for help from the Malian government, France sent forces down to secure the territory. They have maintained a force presence ever since. While Mali may have fallen off the mainstream media radar over the past two years, talks between the Tuareg rebels and the US-backed Malian government have been ongoing. The most recent round of talks in Algiers ended without a peace deal, stemming manly from the failure of the Malian government to comply with demands from the Tuareg groups for more autonomy in Azawad. With these developments, along with the recent announcement of more IMF loan guarantees to the Malian government, this week's Global Research News Hour takes a closer look at the dynamics shaping the West African country with three guests. Abayomi Azikiwe is Editor of Pan-African NewsWire. He has written extensively on the topic of Western, particularly US, involvement in the African continent, and the principally foreign interests being served by the US troop presence there. Azikiwe looks at Mali in a geo-strategic context. John Schertow is the Winnipeg-based Editor and founder of Intercontinental Cry, an on-line magazine dedicated to reporting and chronicling Indigenous resistance struggles around the world.
