#047 - Today we are talking to Aaron Stewart, the owner and Head Chef of MexiQ, an Oakland Mexican BBQ establishment that blends the flavors of his East Oakland Black and Hispanic childhood neighborhood.  Chef Aaron's career went somewhat in reverse.  He just happened to get a job at a restaurant working for a fine dining chef where he got trained on see and repeat - 1) show you how to do something, 2) tell you what to do, and 3) repeat that process again. He got his first break working at a fast-paced restaurant, under a highly trained celebrity chef and ultimately became Sous Chef.  Then, Aaron decided to go to culinary school at Laney and that is where everything changed.“I walked in being a little big headed because I had been cooking in restaurants for a couple years now. You know, I'm fine dining all these things and then to get in there and everything kind of slowed down.  It kind of sucked in the beginning, but it kind of humbled me because I was a see and repeat chef at that time.”Culinary school gave Aaron the idea to start his own business - he was tired of working for others. He worked on the menu for 2 years.  But his fiance, Leida, gave him the courage.  He may still be working on that menu had she not told him to stop BS'ing and just get out there. “I don't know what you're waiting on? You got the menu, what are you waiting on? And she is a business owner herself, so it was like, you know, she's coming from experience.”He started doing pop-ups in his parents driveway.  He was blown away by the reception - he was extremely proud of the mix of people from East Oakland to Walnut Creek sitting in his driveway enjoying his food and talking.  He especially loves how those relationships have blossomed.“this is somebody who just walked into my driveway to buy some food and now I'm at their kids' birthday parties and stuff.  Just things you wouldn't imagine, the people you meet, that's probably what I'm most proud of.”Be sure to listen until the end to hear how one guy came to the popup and told him his rice was better than his grandma's, then came back the following week with his grandma.

Aaron has followed his passion for art and has been involved in a number of hit films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Civil War, Tomb Raider, Thor Ragnarok and Logan as well as many others. Not only that, he's tried his hand at Shaolin martial arts, had videos shown to Barack Obama and done a load of travelling. If you want to hear more, what are you waiting for? Press play and enjoy! Our fabulous friend Aaron Stewart has a passion for all things design and has worked most of his career in the home category. Growing up in rural Kansas, little Aaron would pour over the pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar dreaming of a big city life. Fast forward, he started his first company, Sové New York, a luxury bedding line whilst he was a junior in college with literally $4 in his bank account and within 3 years grew his business into a million dollar brand. When 9/11 hit and the world turned upside down he had to rethink owning his own company. With a brand-new BFA in Home Products Development from FIT, Aaron was hired as a designer for Martha Stewart Living. He then became Creative Director of luxury bedding company Sferra and later returned to Martha as VP of Product Development and Design. After 19 years of torturous NYC winters, Aaron convinced his husband, Fernando, that they should move back to Fernando's hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they launched an award-winning home store and interior design firm Stewart-Rodriguez. Paradise isn't always perfect and balmy Island life presents its own challenges, surviving Hurricane Maria and reviving their business only to face the global pandemic proved yet another opportunity for creative success and Portococo was born! Reinventing and reimagining sanitizer in a stylish, sustainable way.

When babies start learning to walk we praise them immensely for the fact that they are trying whether or not they are succeeding. We praise them for the effort. Serial entrepreneur, Aaron Stewart, joins me on the show today to discuss the significance of praising the effort our employees and those around us are making. As we grow older, we get so caught up in reaching our goals that we forget to enjoy the journey and pat ourselves on the back for the continued effort we are putting in. While achieving certain outcomes are crucial to any business or in hitting any goal, we cannot disregard the fact that the effort being put in is more important. Constant effort results in an amazing outcome, just be patient!

Myths about marriage seem to die very hard. We take comfort in some of these myths because to do so may be easier to than to face reality in a marriage. However, embracing myths may damage a married union in the end. Three myths of marriage that can be harmful include "if it's right, it will be easy," "if you love me, you will change," and "all my needs should be met by my spouse." Our human condition and our desire for sincere relationship make us want us to believe these myths. However, what we really need is a life-transforming relationship with God. If we are first changed by the love of God, then with His help, marriages can also be transformed. This Week, Heath Hollensbe, Aaron Stewart and Jill Hamilton discuss.
