It's time to discover, learn, and play jazz piano with Andy LaViolette.Andy LaViolette is a musician and filmmaker who has co-owned his company, Mr. Magic Carpet Ride Productions (MMCRP), with his wife, Christi, since 2006. His studies in jazz guitar started in 1994 when he studied with Dr. Bob Lawrence at The Dallas School of Music up until his time at the University of North Texas (UNT) in 1998. After three years of study in the Jazz Performance program at UNT, Andy played professionally as a guitarist in an original, progressive-rock band called “Bagg” and other local Denton, Texas musicians. In 2006, Andy returned to UNT and completed his Jazz Guitar Performance degree in 2010 while he played professionally with numerous musicians including Dave Alexander's Western Swing Big Band, Willie Dees, and other local jazz musicians.It was during that time that Mr. Magic Carpet Ride Productions became a larger part of his professional life and the company evolved into specializing in multi-camera, live music recordings. After working on numerous projects with a band called, “Snarky Puppy”, the partnership culminated several hundred million views of live music films on the web and earned three Grammy awards with Andy as the Director of Photography. Mr. Magic Carpet Ride Productions has since made countless films with other notable musicians such as Charlie Hunter, David Crosby, Bokanté, Banda Magda, Forq, The Quebe Sisters, Shaun Martin, Mark Lettieri, and many others.Since 2017, Andy has worked as a Senior Video Editor, Senior Manager of Content Solutions, and Senior Manager of Content Acquisition at Shutterstock, where he works with some of the largest brands in the world through a library of commercial music, photos, footage, 3D objects, and more. Banda Magda will return to Saratoga Springs, New York when they play the Spa Little Theater at SPAC on Thursday, May 4 at 8 p.m.The group tours the world sharing their global sounds that range from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band's global background and unchained musicality. ZACH BROCK Critically acclaimed as the "pre-eminent improvising violinist of his generation," Zach Brock is an American jazz violinist and GRAMMY Award-winning member of Snarky Puppy. He has toured, recorded, and performed with artists such as Stanley Clarke, Aaron Goldberg, Wycliffe Gordon, Matt Ulery, Michelle Willis, Banda Magda, Bill Laurance, Sirintip, Phil Markowitz, Martha Redbone, and many more. Zach has also released eight solo albums and was named "Rising Star Violinist" of 2013 by Downbeat Magazine. A passionate educator, Zach has coached hundreds of musicians from workshops to conservatories worldwide. Zach remains a perennial coffee fanatic and skateboard enthusiast, and currently lives with his wife and daughters in the NYC area. Magda Giannikou is a musical and creative force! Gaining popularity with her band, Banda Magda, and touring with Snarky Puppy for years, her genius lies in her ability to create musical landscapes that paint pictures and bold universes her audiences always feel they can escape to. Oh and she sings in at least 5 languages! As a composer who dreamed of writing film scores, she listened to movie soundtracks at the age of 10 while other kids were listening to pop songs, and was always searching for music that created environments and ways to escape. Escape not from her life or family who inspired, adored and nurtured her talents, but a creative and imaginary escape where the worlds were endless in their imaginative potential. In our in depth podcast we take a peek behind her creative curtain to learn how she visualizes everything as a landscape in her mind, where words are instruments, melodies are colors, and the song is the final painting. Along with Henry Hey he co-leads the explorative, groove-oriented instrumental band Forq, which has released four albums, and he has an acoustic guitar duo project with Matt Read that released its debut Western Theatre and is preparing a second album. He is an original and current member of 3-time Grammy winning band Snarky Puppy and Grammy-nominated world music group Bokanté as well as a frequent member of Banda Magda. He has performed with Lucy Woodward, Lizz Wright, Nikka Costa, Myron Butler & Levi, and Alejandro Escovedo. He has been featured in several rock musicals, including David Bowie’s Lazarus at New York Theater Workshop (featuring Michael C. Hall) and The Rocky Horror Show at The Dallas Theater Center. Chris grew up in Austin, TX and started playing guitar and recording songs on a 4-track Tascam around age 10. At 13 he joined RedHeaded Stepchild, a western swing kid band, and started gigging around Austin and learning how to solo from bandmate and guitar prodigy Will Knaak. This interest in improvisation led to a fascination with jazz; he joined and composed for the Westlake High School jazz band, and attended the University of North Texas to study with Fred Hamilton. In 2005-2006 he played in the One O’Clock Lab Band and wrote the piece “Foe Destroyer”, which was recorded for the band's Lab 2006 album.Chris remained in the Dallas area for four years after college, co-leading the rock band Oso Closo with singer/songwriter Adrian Hulet, and studying music with Bernard Wright and other members of the Dallas R&B/jazz/Gospel scene. Oso Closo performed on stage in The Who’s Tommy at the Dallas Theater Center and released two albums. After Oso Closo broke up, Chris and fellow band member Danny Garcia joined with singer/songwriter Cade Sadler to form the rock band Foe Destroyer. Foe Destroyer created an eponymous album, toured for several years, and performed on stage in Dallas and NYC in the musical Fly By Night.In recent years Chris has expanded beyond guitar playing to focus on music arranging, mobile app building, and video editing. He writes frequently for string quartet, big band, and horn/string sections. He co-arranged a piece on the Grammy-winning album Sylva by Snarky Puppy with the Metropole Orchestra. He has transcribed and engraved sheet music for Snarky Puppy, Bill Laurance, and his own groups, and he created arrangements and MainStage sounds for the musical Bunkerville. He has created two iPhone apps: Guitar Note Atlas, which helps guitar players visualize the guitar neck, and Set App for creating and sharing set lists. And he has edited and directed music videos for Forq and the Read/McQueen guitar duo.Chris lives in Austin, TX with his wife Erin and their bunny Georgia.

Steeped in the larger-than-life sounds of big band & swing, the 11-piece ensemble performs the work of the German-born singer, composer, and conductor Joe Benjamin. March 9, 2015 by Curtis Killian Founded by Greek-born singer, film scorer and composer Magda Giannikou '08, Banda Magda deftly melds styles from samba to Greek folk to Columbian cumbia. Having studied film scoring at Berklee, Giannikou has caught the attention of everyone from Kronos Quartet to Louis C.K., even singing a duet with the comedian for his hit TV show. In 2014 Giannikou released the album Yerakina with Banda Magda, joined by fellow Berklee alumni Jordan Perlson ’04, Ignacio Hernandez ’07, Marcelo Woloski ’07, Mika Mimura ’07, Keita Ogawa ’07, and Scott Flynn ’07, and coproduced by Fab Dupont ’94. The band has been featured in Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers Series, entered the Top 10 Billboard World Music Charts, and was named one of NPR's 10 favorite World Music Albums in 2013. Having played concerts and festivals worldwide, including alongside Snarky Puppy, the band is currently on tour and in pre-production of their third album to be released in January 2016.
