"Onore a queste valorose!

Fergus Butler-Gallie: Confessions of a young priest God calls into ordained ministry those who he cannot save any other way. That's what Fergus Butler-Gallie was once told. It was a tongue-in-cheek remark, nevertheless, Fergus thinks there's something in it. The 31 year-old was ordained in his mid 20s and has since enjoyed a front row seat to the peculiarities and eccentricities which make up the fabric of ordained ministry. His latest book, Touching Cloth, is a treasure trove of entertaining anecdotes and in this candid interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Fergus retells some of the stand out moments, including the time he and a group of flower arrangers were stuck in the vestibule trying to disable an exceptionally loud rape alarm. He also opens up about the difficulties he's faced within the institution of the CofE and gives his view on what the future of the Church might look like. Fergus Butler-Gallie is a priest and writer. His latest book, Touching Cloth, is a memoir on his time as a priest in Liverpool. We cover many topics relating to Fergus's life, work, and perspectives on faith and the Church of England. I also ask him what he would do with the Church of England if he had a magic wand. Fergus provides insights into life in Liverpool, discussing local culture, diversity, and the famous Liverpool accent. He argues that many stereotypes and assumptions about the city are inaccurate. We explore how Fergus's time as a minister in Liverpool impacted his faith, with Fergus sharing that it was an overall positive experience that affirmed his sense of calling. Discussing the Church of England, Fergus critiques the managerial bureaucracy and argues for decentralization and a return to an earlier model. He wants more inspiring, eccentric bishops. We discuss eccentric reverends from history that Fergus has chronicled, including a food-obsessed dean who famously ate the mummified heart of King Louis XIV. Fergus shares thoughts on the Eucharist and transubstantiation, after I suggest an analogy to actors embodying a role. We discusses how wearing a clerical collar changes how one is perceived. "Dean Buckland was dean of Westminster, which is a very high profile job in the Church of England. And he made it his mission to try and eat everything that had ever existed. So he ate mice, he ate tadpoles...And they go and say, "Oh, now we reach the most impressive thing that we have." And they're very carefully taking it out this casket. And they said, "Because you're such a privileged group of people, we're going to hand it around to all of you. And this is the mummified heart of King Louis XIV smuggled out of France at the revolution and now kept here in our private museum." And it goes around all the people. They look at it and think, "Oh, this is amazing. This is wonderful." It gets to Dean Buckland, he looks at it and he says, "I've never eaten King before." And he pops it in his mouth." We play a short game of over rated under rated and end on Fergus' life advice. Fergus rates: James Bond, the British monarchy, Afternoon tea, The House of Lords, Double decker buses , Black cabs, Pubs, and Cricket. On life advice: Fergus recommends reversing our instincts - don't take seriously what we think we should, and take seriously what we think we shouldn't. For those considering ordination, he advises prayer and cautions it's not for everyone. "There are things in life that should be taken seriously and there are things in life that should not be taken seriously. The real thing to realize is that they're the opposite way around to the way you think they are. Anything you think should be taken seriously, don't take it seriously. Anything you think should not be taken seriously, take it seriously." Transcript and video available here.

I'll admit that often times get stuck in a trap around time. That I don't have enough for the things that matter most to me. But... I also wonder... "Well isn't that the way it has to be?" Thankfully Dr. Gallie is a masterful life coach and in this episode she'll help you start to crack the code on how to shift the story around time.  Annie is a practicing physician with a passion to help high achievers stop feeling overwhelmed so they can go after what they truly desire (and have fun doing it).  One of the main obstacles that she sees her clients struggle with is lack of TIME.  She helps her clients reframe how they think about time by showing them how to create time instead of trying to “find” time amidst their busy schedules. She's also holding a workshop Sunday August 14th around how to create time during which you will learn how to: Create more time, now. Not when you buy that new calendar, but now Understand where and how you can create more time Help to manage expectations with yourself and your partner in regards to time Annie is a practicing family physician in Calgary, Alberta and a trained life coach through The Life Coach School.  She is married with two small kids and a quirky dog.  When she is not exploring with her family in the forest, you may find her making muffins (very popular in her house) or cooking with her family.  Be sure to listen to this episode and register for the event at www.galenhelpsdocs.com/marriage

And as Alok Sharma, the man presiding over it all said - ‘This is our last chance to avoid the worst effects of climate change.'

This week's guest is Gail Gallie. She's the Co-Founder of Project Everyone where she works alongside the writer and director, Richard Curtis. Project Everyone is a not-for-profit creative communications agency that creates campaigns and supports partners to raise awareness, inspire action and drive accountability for the Global Goals of the United Nations. Their mission is to accelerate progress towards a fairer world by 2030, where extreme poverty has been eradicated, climate change is properly addressed, and injustice and inequality are unacceptable. Gail's own energy is infectious. Even across a Zoom from three thousand miles away, she lifted my sense of possibility. As you'll hear, there have been phases in her career where that hasn't been the case. And, like many leaders, at times she has found herself out of sync with the organization she was running. But through her journey, she has created a life in which her leadership both reflects and empowers her as a human being. In my experience, that is all too rare. Most leaders relentlessly prioritize solving their company's problems over their own personal development. Leadership is a moving target. And if you've listened to this podcast before you'll know that great leadership requires that more than one thing be true at once. You have to care about others. And you have to care about yourself. And sometimes, not in that order.

Mr Forster and Mr Gallie take the same poem, 'Kamikaze', and explore two different ways of answering the same question. Hopefully this will show how important it is to think about multiple different ways that you would connect the poems in this section of the anthology together. In this episode, Mr Gallie argues that there are enough links between 'Kamikaze' and 'War Photographer' to make a fantastic essay. Mr Forster will be presenting an alternative argument in the next pod... Whose will be better? Along with being one of my CSU mentors, Rebecca Ruch-Gallie (R-G) has an incredible resume including acting service chief of community practice at CSU since the year 2000, the elected state delegate for the CVMA to the AVMA, the vet of the year in the state of Colorado, plus much more. Today Rebecca is here to share her ever humble knowledge on why sharing information and relying on your peers is one of the best ways to help push the profession forward. R-G works on a state and national level to mold our profession, help underserved populations and inspire the next generations of veterinarians. She believes in focusing on being in the moment with your client, using communication as the most important tool in the clinic, and supporting students to learn how to be better doctors on their own terms. R-G encourages us to take a good look at what you like about where you are at in veterinary medicine, what you don’t like, and how you can empower yourself, to find the right community for you. If you have ever been curious as to what the differences between community care and specializations really are, why telehealth and the sharing of information can be a good thing, or what it is like to set up a new department from scratch, R-G has all these answers. She is also sharing her passion for providing subsidized care for the underserved, why the restaurant industry prepared her as a veterinarian, and what qualities the CVMA board looks for when electing new members. R-G is a legend in our industry and it is a thrill to have her here today to share her communal approach to veterinary medicine and inspire us all to learn from one another. What was your favorite part of R-G’s journey? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode How primary care has evolved in practice and in teaching The changing landscape of competition in applying to vet school and words of advice What is an underserved population and what you can do to help What Rebecca said to John during his vet training that always resonated with him Differences between training as a primary care doctor versus a specific specialization   Quotes “It really emphasized teamwork for success. And I really enjoyed that piece of it, that working together, that camaraderie, of really helping each other, pulling each other up” (8:57) “You have a patient in front of you who are suffering right now, for whatever reason that might be, you need to do something that is scientifically and evidence-based to help that patient to the best of your ability” (13:46) “Most veterinarians think we can do everything, and we can’t. Nor should we.” (27:50) “The profession is so fantastic and it gives so much and I like to think it's me but it's really not, it's about all the people around me” (1:01:30)   Links Veterinary Teaching Hospital At CSU Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Find R-G on LinkedIn    Find the full show notes here  Keep up with everything Podcast A Vet Follow Podcast A Vet on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Join our free community of dedicated vet professionals looking to improve their practices and lives in our free Facebook community! In our second exploration of J. B. Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls', Mr Gallie and Mr Forster look at how class division is presented as the root of society's problems. From the comfort of the recording studio (A.K.A. Mr Forster's car), we evaluate how Priestley shows a world in which those with privilege never look down at those they could help, and instead think only of climbing further up the twin ladders of profit and status. Titanic comes up more than it should, and Mr Forster (much like a modern day Mrs Birling) mocks Mr Gallie's 'provincial' ways. But what is the relevance and meaning of the four nations context for womens writing in Ireland and Wales? What part does gender play in the interconnected histories of Wales and Ireland, and how are questions of sexual and artistic identity addressed within texts that imagine British-Irish history in gendered terms? This lecture identifies finds evidence of a feminist reimagining of archipelagic relationships by two writers: Munster novelist and playwright Una Troy, and Welsh writer Menna Gallie, born into a mining community on the western edge of the South Wales coalfields. Both Troy and Gallie wrote novels that deploy plots of female friendship to interrogate the relationship between gender and national affiliation in a four nations context.
