Turner is currently the co-founder and co-CEO of the Body Freedom Project which was formed to realize a world free from body discrimination. Turner is also the founder of the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) which she successfully merged with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) in 2018 after 10 years of running BEDA's day-to-day operations and programming. A highlight of Turner's work with BEDA was the inclusion of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual's 5th Edition (DSM-5), published in 2013. Prior to this diagnostic addition, those struggling with the most common and underdiagnosed eating disorder had little hope of being recognized much less accessing treatment and insurance coverage. One of the most forward-thinking and pivotal programs created by Turner and the board of directors of BEDA was Weight Stigma Awareness Week which continues under The Body Freedom Project. This powerful event held every September is critical to the awareness and education necessary to eliminate the weight stigma and discrimination that impedes access to quality healthcare, employment, housing and the basic dignity of not being bullied, harassed or stigmatized based on body shape and size.   There is nothing safe about catalyzing the much needed changes we need in our world today.   Speaking your truth feels loaded right now. I'm not talking about speaking your truth as a way to say whatever you feel whenever and wherever.   I'm talking about the deep knowing inside of you that is you without the armor, the spin. The you that doesn't absorb the projections onto you from the world.   The pull to dim what you know to be true as a protective response is real.   Sitting on the fence is a protective response. It also keeps you small and led by the burdens of fear.   I have been rumbling with this truth in my own writing and speaking, noticing the years of protecting internally that push me to placate and keep things vague when there is a lot to lose or a chance to get hurt.   The more I unburden the hurts I have held for so long, the more my capacity to move through the vulnerability of leading from my truth and speaking my truth increases.   Sure, leading from your truth is scary... especially In a world that cancels and criticizes in a heartbeat.   My guest today knows a lot about the challenges and costs of leading from your truth.   With 25 years of experience, Chevese Turner is an internationally recognized eating disorders, weight discrimination and social justice activist who founded the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) in 2008.   Chevese is dedicated to moving beyond the current dominant weight-focused paradigm in public health and healthcare delivery to one that is weight inclusive, promotes well-being free from weight stigma and discrimination, and views our understanding of the social determinants of health as an important way forward for individuals who find themselves at the intersection of oppressions and repeated denial of healthcare based on their body size, color, ethnicity, age, gender, socio-economic status, etc.   This is a conversation about so much more than food and body issues. It is about coming home to your truth. It's about healing from your pain and the traumas of betrayal and constantly being misunderstood. It is about courageous leadership.   Listen to the full episode to hear: Chevese's insights on the pace of change The pain many feel because they are misunderstood and devalued because of the body they inhabit—and the responsibility that all leaders have to ensure this doesn't happen The essential importance of not censoring yourself so you can show up in your truth   Learn more about Chevese Turner: Follow Chevese on Instagram Follow BEDA on Facebook   Learn more about Rebecca: rebeccaching.com Work With Rebecca Sign up for the Weekly Rumble Email   Resources from this episode: Brené Brown

The recovery process is not linear, but rather like a spiral. As we begin our journey of recovery around the spiral we meet many layers of life experiences that trigger disordered eating and body hatred behaviors. Even though we are once again doing these behaviors, we are not at the same starting point in the spiral. As we take each experience and use it as a building block in our healing, we move ourselves along the spiral. When we are consciously working on our recovery, every experience teaches us, giving us more strength and wisdom. Eventually we develop more effective coping tools to deal with these life experiences and the  disorder eating and body hatred behaviors are no longer necessary.   Chevese Turner is the founder and former CEO of the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) which merged with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) in 2018. As part of NEDA’s executive leadership team, she developed the organization’s key policy initiatives and strategy, and directs its partnerships, programming and communications programs. Turner currently is working as a consultant guiding advocacy organizations and corporations in the mental health space to make their environments and policies discrimination-free for higher weight individuals. Not all therapists are good. Not all therapists have the advanced training necessary to help you as an individual or as a couple. Not all therapists have your best interests in mind.  If you are contemplating divorce, want to work on past trauma, or work on your relationship, you need a good therapist to guide you. So, how do you find a good therapist? That’s the topic of this week’s episode.  If you’re a member of my Facebook group, then Katie’s name is probably familiar to you. She’s a member of the group, is an incredible asset and I am so grateful to have her voice there, as well as in this podcast episode.  “Going into therapy with the wrong person is not going to help you,” says Katie. My loves, this is so true. But choosing the right one most certainly will.   Show Highlights The many layers of how to go about picking a therapist (6:08) Tips for researching your therapist options including how to research finding a good couples therapist (16:29) EFT: Emotionally Focused Therapy takes the understanding of attachment theory and applies it to how we come together and fall apart in our relationships (18:02) Everybody has dysfunction and we all can choose to (or not to) deal with it. The more we put work into healing our attachment injuries the more value we are going to get from our relationships (21:30) Schema therapy - what it is and how it helps change your relational behavioral patterns (19:46) In looking for a couple’s therapist, you should be looking for someone who has experience in several advanced therapies (27:00) Who should NOT be in couple’s therapy:  active abuse or addiction by someone who is not willing to address and work through it (27:55) When therapists act in dual roles (individually and as a couple’s therapist) (28:09) Trust your gut! If you don’t feel like a therapist is the right fit for you, they’re probably not. (33:36) Trauma bonds: the theory of trauma bonding and  how they can lead you to repeat old abusive habits (38:15) Learn More About Katie: Katie Thompson LPC, CEDS is a psychotherapist in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. Finding her niche (non-diet/HAES) and a supportive practice after gaining her first role and feeling uncomfortable practicing from an incompatible paradigm. Mixed-messages in the standard paradigm (weight-centred) and how the non-diet/HAES approach aligned with personal and professional values. Importance of validating a client’s experience and how the non-diet approach “provides an alternative for clients to partner with their bodies instead of constantly trying to battle their bodies”. Understanding the human experience; the behavioural similarities between those diagnosed with an eating disorder and those non-diagnosed and need for strengthened training programmes.   Importance of broadening eating disorders/disorder eating screening and assessment perspectives. Working with Anna Lutz, colleague, mentor and friend, to develop workshops for BEDA and NEDA on ‘Age Appropriate Nutrition Education’ based on child development and developmentally appropriate principles. Current nutrition education programs at schools; their abstract and flawed design and suggestions for improvements. Our cultures concern for ‘the health/moral crisis’, weight bias and fat phobia and how it moves us away from holistic health. Her new exciting project – watch this space!   About Katherine: Katherine is a registered dietitian/nutritionist from Salt Lake City, Utah who provides nutrition therapy for eating disorders, intuitive eating, chronic dieting, weight concerns, and family and childhood feeding dynamics. Her therapeutic approach adopts non-diet principles consistent with the Intuitive Eating and HAES® models. Katherine, along with her friend and colleague Anna Lutz, developed and facilitated workshops on ‘Age Appropriate Nutrition Education’ based on child development and developmentally appropriate principles for the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) and National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) conferences last year (2017). When the Netflix Original 'To the Bone' was released many helping professionals who work with people with eating disorders were not too happy. The primary complaint was concern that (once again) stereotypes for eating disorders would be reinforced by centering the story around a very thin white woman. See here: How Current Eating Disorder Discourse Fails The LGBTQ Community. And How We Can Change That To the Bone: creating eating disorder awareness or doing harm As An Eating Disorder Therapist, I’m Worried After Seeing Netflix’s ‘To The Bone’ Why We Need More ‘Hunger’ And Less ‘To The Bone’ I sat down with Chevese Turner, founder of the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) to discuss the myths and misconceptions about who gets eating disorders (we all do) and how we can all do better to identify and help those struggling find recovery. It’s pretty tricky because many people with weight concerns show up to diet programs and weight loss centers when they could have an eating disorder. In this episode we also discuss the appropriateness of using the word “fat” as as descriptor, why we need to acknowledge our privileges, and the story for how Binge Eating Disorder became acknowledged as it’s own eating disorder. (hint: weight stigma and diet culture are major reasons why BED is under diagnosed and treated today). Tune in and let me know what you think by leaving a rating or review. Download Episode! Hey there, lovely radicals... podcast ahead! This week, on the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast, it’s my pleasure to talk to Chevese Turner from the Washington DC area. Chevese is the woman who almost 9 years ago founded the Binge Eating Disorder Association (BEDA) in June 2008, recognizing the need for an organization to advocate on behalf of individuals affected by Binge Eating Disorder (BED), as well as the providers who treat them. Turner’s well-rounded career in the health care, pharmaceutical, political and non-profit arenas, as well as her many leadership roles within these fields, prepared her to launch BEDA, the only organization specifically suited to support individuals and treatment professionals managing BED. Today, you’ll hear Chevese talk about: – How old she was when she lost the innocent, joyful, and non-judgmental attitude towards her own body – What drove her to start searching for, stealing and hoarding food – What every type of binging behavior stems from – How her mother related to food and weight – Why denial about unhealed past wounds always leads to us passing along the same pain (we can not outrun our own shadow) – Why those old painful memories are often the ones that leave the deepest imprint on our soul – Why we often treat ourselves the way we have been treated as children – Why food (restricting/dieting, or overeating) is so commonly used to try to escape difficult emotions – How we can start to make sense of our own behavior around food – Why there is no need to be ashamed for recognizing those behaviors for what they are – How shame and weight-bias affect a person’s physical and mental health – Why all the advice she got actually only perpetuated her eating disorder – Why she never really knew what she liked/what her hobbies were – Why she immediately regretted having lap band surgery – What is commonly misunderstood with Binge Eating Disorder (BED) – Why, at the root, anorexia and BED are much more alike as they outwardly seem – Why our society is too quick to categorize people, instead of listening to the person in question first – How terribly effective diet-culture and its constant messages and images really is, and why it is important to be aware of how all of that seeps into our subconscious and colors our own judgment – What she wants us all to know about our bodies – Why bariatric surgery is often done solely for profit, and why there’s so little information about the dangers and the long-term effects of it – The medical ramifications of our society’s belief that "healthy" looks a certain way – How she reacted when she first heard that her Binge Eating Disorder was only to be treated effectively by nourishment – How many years she wasted by being stuck in the diet-cycle, and having little mental space for anything that would have really sparked her interest – Why so many body-obsessed women have no idea who they really are outside of dieting – What led her to found BEDA, and how wonderfully that organization developed – What BEDA is about and what they are actively working on – Why it is important for all of us to resist any sort of weight-stigmatization, and to speak up against it... ... Lucy Lauer, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 26 years’ experience as a Registered Dietitian. She specializes in helping people navigate the rough waters of disordered eating to achieve a healthier life and relationship with food. She has experience with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Nocturnal Eating Disorder, and the range of dysfunctional eating patterns that cause distress but may not have a diagnostic label.   In 35 years of practice, Lucy has treated disordered eating from both a nutritional and psychological perspective. She has presented workshops at the local, state and national level on many aspects of disordered eating for psychologists and counselors, physicians, dietitians, parents and teachers. She established and facilitated the Space Coast Eating Disorders Professional Consortium from 2009-2011, and supervises Florida Tech Psychology students in a special practicum focused on Eating Disorder treatment.    She participates regularly in continuing education programs and has had over 60 hours of specialized training in ED treatment in the last 3 years alone. Specific topics have included ACT and other evidence-based interventions, medical complications, trauma impact, co-occurring disorders (substance abuse, self-injury, etc), assessment for appropriate level of care, body image, art and other expressive therapies, and using a team approach to treatment. She has also been invited to site visits at residential treatment centers in South Florida and Colorado.        What are the various types of eating disorders? Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder   Since eating disorders have a direct impact on physical health as well, tell us a bit about the team approach to treatment when collaborating with Registered Nutritionists, Physicians, etc... The gold standard of ED treatment involves a team of clinicians working together. The team consists of a mental health counselor or psychologist, Registered Dietitian (RD), primary care physician, and if needed, a psychiatrist. In an out-patient setting, it is usually the mental health clinician who coordinates care by communicating with other team members re. treatment goals, progress toward goals, and psychoeducation, as needed. The RD monitors weight, food intake and specific food-related issues and may also help set exercise goals. Medical parameters such as labs, EKGs and bone-density are ordered by the PCP and shared with other team members as markers for progress. When all team members are not under the same roof (which is usually the case), communication is done through phone calls, written assessments and updates and occasionally, face-to-face team meetings. If the client is a minor, the parents are also part of the team and are included in treatment planning, progress updates and psychoeducation so they can more effectively support their child’s recovery.    Many people with an eating disorder have a fear of recovery.  Talk a bit about this and how a clinician can work with someone resistant about recovering from their eating disorder. An eating disorder is experienced as a life-raft in the rough sea of uncertainty that is a normal part of life. Despite the fact that eating disorders are deadly and create enormous physical and psychological pain, they also serve important functions such as protection from intrusion, a sense of control when life feels chaotic, a way to make complex issues seem more manageable and many others. In order to help a person let go of this safety net, the clinician has to help them:  1) recognize the costs to other valued parts of their lives such as relationships, energy & concentration for other persuits; 2) Identify the functions of the ED and Develop other ways to address those. This often requires practicing acceptance of the inherent uncertainty of life, imperfection of themselves and others, and the messiness of living in a human body with all of its flaws and limitations. Sometimes, cognitive growth and recovery cannot take place until weight and nutritional balance is restored and this takes education, support, encouragement and a leap of faith on the part of the client.    I know you facilitate a wonderful group for people with an eating disorder.  Tell us a bit about that group and how it's different from individual therapy? Our 8-week eating disorder therapy group employs a combination of mindfulness practice, self-compassion and some elements of ACT (acceptance & Commitment Therapy), which helps people identify personal values that the ED has robbed them of. There is a lot of discussion about perfectionism, fear of failure, body hatred, habitual responses to difficult emotions and practice slowing down and experimenting with alternative perspectives and behaviors. Much of the benefit from the group comes from the common experiences of the members who usually feel alien and outside of “normal” human connections. ED is a very isolating illness and it is progressive, so over the years, people feel more and more alone and ashamed of the disorder in addition to all the other things about themselves they already hate.     Where can clinicians go for more information, trainings, certifications, etc... My favorite resources are programs presented by The Renfrew Center & the Eating Recover Center, both of which have residential treatment facilities in several US cities and do a lot of research, outreach and education. There are some very useful websites with loads of info, too. I’ve attached a list of resources we turn to on a regular basis.
