I'd Rather Be Reading

Sometimes in life we get the chance to experience a mountaintop moment, and that's exactly what happened when I chatted with the brilliant Geneen Roth this week. Geneen wrote the landmark book Women, Food, and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything, which came out in 2010, nearly 15 years ago. A huge fan of this groundbreaking work? None other than Oprah Winfrey, so if it's good enough for Oprah, it's good enough for me. At its core, one of the central messages in Women, Food, and God is this: we often eat to fill a void or a hole for something other than food. Anytime we eat when we're not physically hungry — so, think emotional eating — we are hungry for something other than food. We are seeking nourishment from food to fill a lack of nourishment in another area of our lives. The good news, as Geneen and I discuss in today's episode? This is fixable! I am living proof, as I used to struggle with this but don't to the same degree anymore. I will probably always struggle with this to an extent, but reading Geneen's book (which I cried while reading!) ushered in a new chapter of my life where my issues with food didn't run the show. Geneen has candidly admitted that she has had food issues in the past, too, going back to age five or six. Her first diet began when she was just 11. I relate to this so much, as it was the same story for me. If you have ever eaten to fulfill an unmet need elsewhere, this conversation is for you. We must ask ourselves, Geneen writes, “What do I really want?” One's relationship with food is often directly correlated to one's relationship with themselves, and food is a mirror for how well we feel nourished in our lives. Today, Geneen helps us take the first step with an intention to heal a poor relationship with food; talks to us about why diet and restriction are not the answer to solving this issue; and shares what she's learned after the massive global reception to this book. This is by no means the only book Geneen has written, but Women, Food, and God is what we're zooming in on today. In fact, Geneen has written 10 books, and I was excited to hear her say on this episode that she's working on a new book! In addition to Women, Food, and God, Geneen has also written This Messy Magnificent Life, When Food Is Love, Breaking Free from Emotional Eating, Lost and Found, and many others. Over the past 40 years, she has helped thousands of people through her workshops and retreats and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, and The View. Geneen's books were some of the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that transcend food, weight, and body image. She believes, as I do, that the way to transform our relationship with food and our body is to be kind to ourselves, not punishing. Take a listen to our conversation. For women, one of the biggest battles we fight is with the size of our bodies. Parents, media and society as a whole have conditioned us to believe that our bodies are wrong. Cue the deep-rooted lack of kindness towards ourselves, the spiral of suffering, the fraught relationship with food, and an endless pursuit of physical perfection. Every food choice we make - whether it's healthy or unhealthy - is run by our relationship with ourselves. Each bite falls into one of two categories. We're either confirming that we're not enough or we're affirming that we are enough. We might not even know it, but how we eat and what we eat goes back to the painful conclusions we made about ourselves in our formative years. What is the gateway to form a loving relationship with ourselves and food? How do we start befriending our bodies instead of battling them? In this episode, we're joined by multiple New York Times bestselling author, Geneen Roth. We talk about how to change our relationship with food by going back to where it all began. One's relationship with food is an outpicturing or expression of how you feel about yourself. -Geneen Roth   Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The battle between food and self One's relationship with food is an expression of how you feel about yourself. What are the food rules we're following without even realizing we're following them? What are they connected to?  -How to stop holding ourselves to awful standards  As women, we're taught to evaluate ourselves from the outside. How do we start with our inner landscape instead? -When you're present, nothing is wrong Resistance to what's happening right now creates suffering. How can the question “If I had orchestrated this, what would I have wanted to learn” help us?    Guest Bio Geneen Roth is the author of ten books, including her newest, This Messy Magnificent Life, and New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love, Lost and Found, and Women Food and God, as well as The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It. She lives in California with charms of hummingbirds; her husband Matt; and Izzy the fabulous, eating-disordered dog. Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight and body image. Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food, our body, and so much more in our life is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves -- instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. In this beautifully enlightening episode, we are joined by Geneen Roth, a woman whose life work revolves around transforming our relationship with food, body, and self. Her journey is a powerful testament to the healing potential within us all, as she shares her deep insights and personal experiences.Geneen Roth began her path driven by a lifelong struggle with food and body image. From the age of six, she felt a sense of not being enough, believing herself to be too fat. This self-perception led to a series of extreme diets and eating disorders, including anorexia and addiction to amphetamines. Despite reaching dangerously low weights, the self-loathing persisted. This cycle of gaining and losing weight continued until a pivotal moment when she realized that dieting was not the solution but part of the problem. It was then she chose to stop dieting and started to trust her body, leading to a significant shift in her life and work.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSTrust Your Body: Geneen's journey teaches us the importance of trusting our bodies and listening to their needs. Instead of imposing strict diets and restrictions, we should tune into our body's natural signals of hunger and fullness, allowing ourselves to eat mindfully and with kindness.Examine Your Beliefs: A key element in Geneen's transformation was examining and challenging the deeply rooted beliefs she held about herself. She encourages us to explore the underlying reasons for our eating habits, understanding that our relationship with food often mirrors our self-beliefs and emotional states.Practice Kindness and Tenderness: Geneen emphasizes the necessity of treating ourselves with kindness and tenderness, especially when dealing with food. This includes being gentle with ourselves when we slip up and recognizing that self-criticism only perpetuates the cycle of negative behavior.Geneen's work highlights the importance of understanding the cultural and familial influences on our body image and eating habits. She speaks of the early messages we receive from parents, media, and society that shape our self-perception and behaviors. In her own life, her mother's fears and criticisms about weight deeply impacted her, leading to years of struggle. She now helps others recognize and break free from these inherited beliefs. One of the most profound insights Geneen offers is the recognition that our struggles with food are often a gateway to deeper spiritual and emotional issues. She describes food as a Rorschach test that reveals our underlying beliefs about ourselves. By examining what we eat and why, we can uncover the emotional triggers and false beliefs driving our behavior. For those facing unsupportive environments, whether family, culture, or workplace, Geneen's advice is to stand firm in what you know is true for yourself. Change often requires courage and the willingness to be different, but ultimately, it is about taking responsibility for your own well-being and happiness.Geneen also provides practical tips for approaching food and eating. She encourages mindful eating practices such as paying attention to hunger signals, choosing food that genuinely nourishes the body, and creating a pleasant, focused eating environment. These practices help develop a healthier relationship with food and support emotional and physical well-being.In our conversation, Geneen's wisdom and warmth shine through. She shares that understanding and healing our relationship with food is not just about changing eating habits but about discovering who we truly are and what we genuinely need. This journey is deeply personal and spiritual, leading us to greater self-awareness and love.Geneen Roth's message is one of hope and transformation. Her story and teachings remind us that we have the power to change our relationship with food and, in doing so, transform our lives. By embracing kindness, self-awareness, and authenticity, we can find true peace and joy within ourselves. Please enjoy my conversation with Geneen Roth.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Already early on in her life Geneen had a relationship and appreciation of the natural beauty, and she also often slept outside, and would be transfixed by the starry night sky and the milky way. Geneen became a systems engineer in Silicon Valley. But seeing the stress at work, just seemed meaningless to her, and she realised that she couldn't stay, and instead went for a bit of a walk about to wild places. She then lived in a tipi for a year and worked as a river-guide in Jackson Hole, by The Yellowstone National Park, and she felt like she really came alive there. She realised that we can live with so much less. And she loved the experience of getting close to the cold, the other creatures and the night sky. We speak about how she observed how every animal and being has its place and its purpose in nature, and that everything fits in perfectly in this web of reciprocity, so she wondered what our human role would be in this eco system? what is unique about the human in the eco-system? Geneen is fascinated by our human capacity to imagine what doesn't exist. Other forms of life don't imagine things that have no relation to anything they haven't experienced. We furthermore have this capacity to create the things we imagine. This imagination is both our gift and our place of unconsciousness, says Geneen. She also believes that something is happening to our consciousness at this moment in time. There is a way in which the intelligence of this planet is trying to reach us through our generative human imagination, she says, and it seems to be expressing through poetry and other creative arts. F.ex. like Thomas Berry's book The dream of the earth or James Hillman's: A psyche the size of earth. She also speaks about how earth based people have an understanding that everything is cyclical, but that we now understand that there is also a linear development going on. This idea also comes from Brian Swimme, cosmologist, who says that one of the dynamics is chaos and disruption, but there is also another principle of greater and greater coherence. Geneen also mentions Teilhard de Chardin in speaking about how the greater the complexity, the greater the consciousness or the more encompassing it can become. And she sees the psychedelic renaissance in plant medicines as a sign of changes to the collective consciousness. Geneen also speaks about how having access to our imagination, being able to imagine the possibility that everything is alive, and has its own longings and awareness, that this opens a gateway in our consciousness, it enlarges it. And she says that the other than human world responds to our appreciation. She says that our ancestors knew that we have to give gratitude and offerings to the natural world, and we can recover that mind and enact as if our world is holy and sacred, and this is something for each and everyone of us to do - it changes us, and it changes our community She mentions Howard Thurman, and how he says: do not ask what the world needs, but what brings you alive, because that is what the world wants - your aliveness You can find Geneen Marie Haugens offerings here: www.animas.org And these are links to some of her articles: Council of the Wild Gods - Kosmos Journal It's All Unceded Land | Geneen Marie Haugen Homo imaginans: The Imagining Earth – Kosmos Journal Wild Imagination, by Geneen Marie Haugen | Parabola Essay And my website is: www.duritaholm.com

Geneen Marie-Haugen explores an emerging dimension of the human/Earth relationship – a relationship in which the human capacity for imagination is an essential component of planetary ecology. We’ll consider the possibility that our manner of approaching the wilder Others make a difference – both reawakening the older mind in us that knows the animate nature of the world, as well as re-enlivening the wilder Others themselves. “A practice of celebrating the wild Earth and cosmos – like other practices – holds the possibility of re-shaping consciousness; the more our thoughts, words and gestures are intertwined with the beings among whom we abide, the more the world pulses with life, the more we hear the exuberantly singing Earth, and perhaps even the songs of starlight.” –Geneen Marie Haugen from her essay, “Thomas Berry And The Evocation Of Participatory Consciousness,” which appears in Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth.Dr. Geneen Marie Haugen grew up a little wild, with a run-amok imagination. As a guide to the intertwined mysteries of nature and psyche, she delights in multidimensional listening and in offering perceptive questions, ceremonies, escapades, and reflections that help expand a sense of our own possibilities as individuals (and as a species) and deepen our experience of participation with an intelligent, animate Earth/Cosmos. Her writing has appeared in many anthologies and journals, including Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth; Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth; Written River; Parabola Journal; Kosmos Journal; Ecopsychology; and The Artist’s Field Guide to Greater Yellowstone. A former tipi-dweller and whitewater river guide, she now lives amidst the creatures and features of southern Utah’s sandstone labyrinth. She is exploring the awakening of what she calls “planetary imagination,” and the possible emergence of a new mode of the human that she has called Homo imaginans. She is committed to the world-transforming potential of the human imagination in collaboration with the Earth community. To know more about Geneen’s work visit https://animas.org or see her offering this spring at Esalen.Support the show (https://www.natureevolutionaries.com/donations)

Health Begins With Mom Podcast | For The Woman Who Is Done Surviving And Is Ready To Thrive As A Woman, Wife And A Mother

Hey mama, Today on the show I share a beautiful piece from a book called Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth. I think this book must be passed on from mother to daughter!  Every woman must read this book so that she establishes a healthy relationship with food and God.  You'll hear me read a story from one of her retreats and how women heal their life long battles with food, body image problems, insecurities, overeating, undereating, binging, using food as comfort, and other self-destructive patterns we all do. What God has got to do with it? In short, everything. It will make more sense after you listen. The road to healing is messy, however embracing the messiness in what you have to be willing to go through in order to get to where you want to go. This work is hard and it requires time, but it is so worth it. This is your life's work! There is no benefit to you or to your family in dwelling on or commiserating how bad your life is and how hard it is for you to step out and do something about it. As far as I know, all that matters is your will. Everything else will unfold for you. Just trust the process. I want to hear from you! Do you resonate with Geneen's message? Find me over at IG and share your thoughts with me @healthbeginswithmom (if you're not on IG, you're welcome to email me dorit@healtbbeginswithmom.com) Looking forward to hearing back from you! Geneen has been teaching and writing about conscious eating and living for the past 30 years. Her most recent book is This Messy Magnificent Life: A Field Guide. Through keen observation, reflection, and some very funny asides, her work guides us to see our compulsions and self-sabotaging habits through more curious and self-compassionate eyes. It also helps us see the bigger picture of what we are doing here in the first place, and what we want to do with, as she says, "the breaths we have left." In Part 1, Geneen and Pilar covered all sorts of ground. Here, in Part 2, they pick up where they left off, talking about appetites, aging, beauty, creativity, mortality, and more. Geneen also shares a few of what she calls her "touchstones" — simple strategies for getting grounded, for warding off anxiety, and for evolving your own viewpoints. Welcome to episode thirty-seven of the Honest Mamas Podcast! Today, we speak to Geneen Roth about her new book; This Messy Magnificent Life: A Field Guide and how to be more present in your own life. Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight, and body image. Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food, our body, and so much more in our life is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves—instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. Geneen’s work has now expanded to explore the territory beneath the culture we’ve built. After years of teaching workshops on weight, food, and money, Roth realized that there was a connection between these issues that held her students captive in their anxiety, lack, and discontent. Seeing herself as much a student as a guide, Roth uses revelations from her own life—both the horrific and comic—to examine this connection. Out of her own past struggles with feeling as if she would never fit into her own skin, much less in the world around her, Roth tackles how we can move beyond our pasts and build a life that reflects our singularity. Geneen Roth is the author of ten books, including the just-released This Messy Magnificent Life and New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love, Lost and Found, and Women Food and God, as well as The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It. Over the past thirty years, she has worked with thousands of people in her groundbreaking workshops and retreats and has appeared on numerous national shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, the Today show, Good Morning America, and The View. She lives in California with charms of hummingbirds; her husband Matt; and Izzy the fabulous, eating-disordered dog.   What you’ll hear in this episode How Geneen began her path of working with food Why Geneen believes dieting doesn’t work The issues that women have with boundaries The need for mothers to take care of themselves so they can look after others better Better ways to guide our children to eating healthier foods Why we should be wary of constantly setting ourselves goals to achieve The meaning behind the chapter “The Ghost Children” How small changes within a family can have a bigger & wider social impact   Resources https://geneenroth.com https://retreats.geneenroth.com

Martha Beck guest co-hosts in this radical conversation with legendary author Geneen Roth, which aired on Easter Sunday, 2018. Whether you celebrate the holiday or not, imagine this. Chocolate eggs. Jelly Beans. Ham. A little Hawaiian bread with your butter. Or, a LOT of Hawaiian bread with your butter… plus gravy. I mean you’ve tried that, right? Gravybutter? Good God. My point: do you ever wish you could finally attain peace over your weight and what you eat? This episode won’t be sending the food police to your door—no worries!—but it may bring some much-prayed-for relief. I know it has for me, as you’ll hear. These women—Geneen and Martha—are walking, talking, living proof of the magic of transformation, in a wildly abundant and crazy fun kind of way. The three of us have what just might be the radical conversation you’ve been wanting. Because let’s face it; everything you thought was going to fix things hasn’t so far. Perfect timing, I figured, for a holiday about mercy and freedom and rising and angels. Ya? I heard of Geneen’s work years ago, back when book angel Oprah Winfrey shared her awe of this woman’s writing with the world. Geneen was one of the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight, and body image. And Lord, can she write. Her words are poetic. Hypnotic. Delicious, all on their own. Food for thought and the soul. As the author of TEN titles, including the just-released THIS MESSY MAGNIFICENT LIFE (Scribner), and The New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love; Women Food and God, and Lost and Found (about losing all of her money to Bernie Madoff)—Geneen is PROLIFIC. With lots to say about healthy ways to get our books completed, and how to live peacefully as a writer, teacher, and sane citizen in an insane world. Bestselling author Martha—who is in her 17th year as an O, The Oprah Magazine columnist (can you imagine making all those deadlines?!)—is pretty smart about that stuff, too. Can I get an Amen? I know you’re going to love Geneen as much as I do. One of her superpowers, for the past 30+ years, is helping people find freedom at her weight, food, and money retreats and seminars. Rather than pushing away the “crazy” things we do, Geneen’s work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense. The way to transform our relationship with food, our body, and so much more, is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves—instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. Ahhhh. Told ya. Church. And modern society made a lot of women think that being thin is and should be the end goal. However, my guest, Geneen Roth says that losing weight doesn't necessarily mean it is good for us. In this episode, she will explain why we must delve into the root cause to make peace with food. The Desire To Be Thin Like most women today, Geneen Roth was obsessed with being thin. As young as 11 years old, she was made to believe that her worth depended on her weight. Trying out every diet and diet pills, Geneen Roth used to be on an endless search for the best way to lose weight. She was a compulsive eater. It was likewise her coping mechanism whenever she was troubled or stressed. Consequently, Geneen Roth was blind-sided that she was at peace with food. "I defined myself by the size of my thighs and belly. At a very young age until my late twenties, I was constantly on radical diets and diet pills," shared Geneen Roth. Downward Spiral When Geneen Roth started gaining weight from all the food she was eating, she decided it was time to lose weight. You'd think by this period she was at peace with food, right? Wrong. It became worse. On a downward spiral, Geneen Roth jogged 4 miles a day. She also thought that if she could just eat a total of 150 calories a day, it would make her lose weight faster. And it did. However, dropping down to 80 pounds was certainly not a healthy weight. Not knowing how to find peace with food, Geneen Roth eventually became suicidal. There just seemed to be no way out from her anorexic state. She harbored feelings of guilt for not being "good enough," and was ashamed of being overweight. Rising From the Ashes During her period of soul-searching, Geneen Roth came across a book. According to her, that book opened up her eyes to find her real worth. After being burdened so many years battling low self-esteem, Geneen Roth slowly healed and eventually found peace with food. "Sometimes, when we lose weight, we still feel like crap," Geneen Roth said. "Because whenever we think that something out there is going to fix something in the inside of us, we're always disappointed." Ultimately, Geneen Roth could finally say she found peace with food only when she embraced her true self. Realizing the unhealthy mindset of being dependent on others for love and validation made Geneen Roth able to heal from anorexia. Paying It Forward Now that she has healed from anorexia, Geneen Roth embarked on a mission to help others who were in the same situation as she was years ago. Helping others get into the right mindset ultimately results in being at peace with food. "I teach people how to disengage. Individuals who are struggling with food, often feel like they're not supposed to sit down," explains Geneen Roth. "Hence, disengaging from that voice is very important." Being In The Present Having the right mindset spells a big difference on the road to finding peace with food. Food neither has to be feared or shunned. According to Geneen Roth, once you learn to listen to your body and love yourself more, your relationship with food gets better. Consequently, it's all about accepting yourself and that women are not built the same way. While it is essential to keep your weight at a healthy level, it should not dictate your self-worth. "I have discovered that most people aren't present most of the time. Because we're always thinking about the next thing," said Geneen Roth. "Sometimes being aware of your right hand and feeling the life force in it can help you come back to your body. It's a great way to be alive." Make Peace With Food Workshop Geneen Roth has an excellent workshop coming up next month. The Make Peace With Food workshop will show you tips and tricks on how you can attain your natural weight. Furthermore, the workshop will empower you to practice a healthy relationship with food and be more mindful of what your body is saying. Divided into three segments --- Vitality, Radiance and Weight Loss, Geneen Roth's workshop is the complete package to a better you! "We eat the way we live. Lucy Lauer, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 26 years’ experience as a Registered Dietitian. She specializes in helping people navigate the rough waters of disordered eating to achieve a healthier life and relationship with food. She has experience with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Nocturnal Eating Disorder, and the range of dysfunctional eating patterns that cause distress but may not have a diagnostic label.   In 35 years of practice, Lucy has treated disordered eating from both a nutritional and psychological perspective. She has presented workshops at the local, state and national level on many aspects of disordered eating for psychologists and counselors, physicians, dietitians, parents and teachers. She established and facilitated the Space Coast Eating Disorders Professional Consortium from 2009-2011, and supervises Florida Tech Psychology students in a special practicum focused on Eating Disorder treatment.    She participates regularly in continuing education programs and has had over 60 hours of specialized training in ED treatment in the last 3 years alone. Specific topics have included ACT and other evidence-based interventions, medical complications, trauma impact, co-occurring disorders (substance abuse, self-injury, etc), assessment for appropriate level of care, body image, art and other expressive therapies, and using a team approach to treatment. She has also been invited to site visits at residential treatment centers in South Florida and Colorado.        What are the various types of eating disorders? Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder   Since eating disorders have a direct impact on physical health as well, tell us a bit about the team approach to treatment when collaborating with Registered Nutritionists, Physicians, etc... The gold standard of ED treatment involves a team of clinicians working together. The team consists of a mental health counselor or psychologist, Registered Dietitian (RD), primary care physician, and if needed, a psychiatrist. In an out-patient setting, it is usually the mental health clinician who coordinates care by communicating with other team members re. treatment goals, progress toward goals, and psychoeducation, as needed. The RD monitors weight, food intake and specific food-related issues and may also help set exercise goals. Medical parameters such as labs, EKGs and bone-density are ordered by the PCP and shared with other team members as markers for progress. When all team members are not under the same roof (which is usually the case), communication is done through phone calls, written assessments and updates and occasionally, face-to-face team meetings. If the client is a minor, the parents are also part of the team and are included in treatment planning, progress updates and psychoeducation so they can more effectively support their child’s recovery.    Many people with an eating disorder have a fear of recovery.  Talk a bit about this and how a clinician can work with someone resistant about recovering from their eating disorder. An eating disorder is experienced as a life-raft in the rough sea of uncertainty that is a normal part of life. Despite the fact that eating disorders are deadly and create enormous physical and psychological pain, they also serve important functions such as protection from intrusion, a sense of control when life feels chaotic, a way to make complex issues seem more manageable and many others. In order to help a person let go of this safety net, the clinician has to help them:  1) recognize the costs to other valued parts of their lives such as relationships, energy & concentration for other persuits; 2) Identify the functions of the ED and Develop other ways to address those. This often requires practicing acceptance of the inherent uncertainty of life, imperfection of themselves and others, and the messiness of living in a human body with all of its flaws and limitations. Sometimes, cognitive growth and recovery cannot take place until weight and nutritional balance is restored and this takes education, support, encouragement and a leap of faith on the part of the client.    I know you facilitate a wonderful group for people with an eating disorder.  Tell us a bit about that group and how it's different from individual therapy? Our 8-week eating disorder therapy group employs a combination of mindfulness practice, self-compassion and some elements of ACT (acceptance & Commitment Therapy), which helps people identify personal values that the ED has robbed them of. There is a lot of discussion about perfectionism, fear of failure, body hatred, habitual responses to difficult emotions and practice slowing down and experimenting with alternative perspectives and behaviors. Much of the benefit from the group comes from the common experiences of the members who usually feel alien and outside of “normal” human connections. ED is a very isolating illness and it is progressive, so over the years, people feel more and more alone and ashamed of the disorder in addition to all the other things about themselves they already hate.     Where can clinicians go for more information, trainings, certifications, etc... My favorite resources are programs presented by The Renfrew Center & the Eating Recover Center, both of which have residential treatment facilities in several US cities and do a lot of research, outreach and education. There are some very useful websites with loads of info, too. I’ve attached a list of resources we turn to on a regular basis. Rev. Patrick continues his discussion of Geneen Roth's book Women Food and God. In the chapter entitled "Married to Amazement", Geneen concludes that the mind is mad. But once we accept the madness, we can pay attention to what isn't mad. And this is one of the main purposes of meditation. To focus upon what isn't mad. Why meditate? Our incessantly thinking mind is useful when we need to conceptualize, plan, and theorize. But, when we depend on our mind to guide our inner lives, we're lost. So the practice of meditation gradually brings our inner guidance closer, so that we can recognize it clearly when we need it the most.
