In 1975, “Pampered Menial” was released to 5-star critical ratings. It was not a commercial success. However, in the years since, it has become a gem, possibly one of the greatest albums of the 70's!  David Surkamp's surreal 4-octave voice has been compared to Robert Plant.  Matched with Siegfried Carver's violin and Steve Scorfina's guitar, it creates a stunning work of art – intricate and majestic with guts and delicacy in equal measure. With this episode, we want to open more ears to an amazing piece of symphonic rock/metal. Our “Album you must hear before you Die” is 1974's “Crime of the Century” by Supertramp.  Produced by Ken Scott of Bowie fame, this album is where their sound came together as a kind of Pink Floyd-lite. Nach zwei gefloppten Alben, konnte Supertramp nur mit finanzieller Hilfe noch ein weiteres Album aufnehmen. Und das brachte dann endlich die Wende für Supertramp. Die ersten beiden Alben, die Supertramp veröffentlicht haben, waren wenig erfolgreich. Kam "Supertramp" immerhin noch auf Platz 158 in den Billboard 200 (USA), hat sich der Nachfolger "Indelibly Stamped" in keiner Hitparade blicken lassen. Die Karriere von Supertramp stand daher schon am Anfang vor dem Ende. Aber Roger Hodgson, Rick Davis und nicht zuletzt auch ihr Financier, der niederländische Industrielle Stanley August Miesegaes, glaubten weiter an eine Zukunft der Band. Kevin Currie, Frank Farrell und Dave Winthrop wurden ausgetauscht. Für sie kamen John Helliwell, der vor seiner Zeit als Rockstar als Saxophonist in Stripclubs musiziert hatte, Bob Siebenberg (auch bekannt als Bob C. Benberg), der in einer „Pub-Rock“-Band getrommelt hat und Dougie Thomson. Er hatte vorher schon ein paar Mal Bass bei Supertramp gespielt und wurde nun zum festen Mitglied.  Die erste Single in dieser Besetzung war "Land Ho". Der Song wurde zwar auch kein Hit, aber der neue Klang war nicht zu überhören. Während der ersten Schaffensphase haben die beiden Band-Chefs Rick Davis und Roger Hodgson noch gemeinsam Lieder geschrieben. Das änderten sie bei der Arbeit an "Crime Of The Century". Jeder schrieb und arbeitete für sich alleine an den Stücken, erst im Studio wurden die Kompositionen dann mit der Band "erarbeitet". Das führte dazu, dass beide ihre großen Stärken ausspielen konnten. Roger Hodgson, ein Meister der hitverdächtigen Melodien, immer irgendwie melancholisch, aber immer auf den Punkt. Rick Davis‘ Lieder hatten dagegen immer eine leise Ironie und etwas mehr "Rockfeeling". Mit dieser Mischung wurden Supertramp zu einer der erfolgreichsten Bands der Siebziger Jahre und nicht ganz zu Unrecht werden sie in ihrer Gegensätzlichkeit auch mit einem anderen Songschreiber-Duo verglichen: John Lennon und Paul McCartney.  „Crime Of The Century“ wird musikalisch und kommerziell der Durchbruch für Supertramp. Platz 4 in Großbritannien, in Deutschland Platz 5 und in den USA immerhin auch Top 40. Die erste ausgekoppelte Single, "Dreamer" kommt sogar in Neuseeland in die Charts und der Titel entwickelt sich zu einem der Supertramp-Klassiker. Diesen Titel hatte Roger Hodgson schon im Alter von 19 Jahren geschrieben und ihn für dieses Album aus dem Archiv geholt. Nur die Fans in den USA spielten nicht ganz mit, ihnen gefiel die B-Seite besser, das von Rick Davies geschriebene "Bloody Well Right".  Seit erscheinen des Albums sind Supertramp Superstars. Sie werden daran gemessen. Diesem Druck halten sie, zumindest in den folgenden acht Jahren, Stand. Kaum ein Album ohne Hitsingle und auf ihren Tourneen werden Supertramp gefeiert.   Auch die Produktion und der Klang des Albums setzen Maßstäbe. Bueno, pues superada ya la parte más dura de la crisis energética en 1974, a finales de este año y ya en 1975 aparecieron algunas figuras de gran peso en los siguientes años y, algunas, para quedarse incluso en las siguientes décadas. Supertramp fue una de ellas. The Logical Song Supertramp se formó en 1969 liderado por el músico Rick Davies. La primera formación de Supertramp estaba integrada por Roger Hodgson, Richard Palmer y Robert Millar y publicó un álbum homónimo dominado por el rock progresivo de escaso éxito comercial, o sea, que no se jalaron una rosca. A éste le siguió un segundo trabajo, Indelibly Stamped, que tuvo la misma repercusión, o sea, ninguna. Con estas expectativas el grupo se remodeló saliendo Palmer y Millar que fueron sustituidos por otros músicos, que no citamos porque duraron poco. A causa del escaso éxito inicial, Davies y Hodgson crearon una nueva formación con nuevos músicos: Dougie Thomson, John Helliwell y Bob Siebenberg, y sus nuevos trabajos incluyeron un sonido más orientado al pop y con un importante participación del piano y del saxofón. El primer álbum de esta formación, Crime of the Century, favoreció el auge comercial de Supertramp, consolidado con sencillos como «Dreamer»… … o como este otro «Bloody Well Right». CRIME OF THE CENTURY by Supertramp Rob brings us Supertramp — with their commercial breakthrough, Crime of the Century, their third studio album. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson rebuilt the group after their first two unsuccessful albums, adding Bob C. Benburg on drums, Dougie Thomson on bass, and John Helliwell as their woodwinds player. Although not a concept album, Crime of the Century loosely follows themes involving loneliness, struggles with conformity, and mental struggles. This album benefits from the very different styles and personalities of Davies and Hodgson, and the tracks have stood the test of time. Join us as we highlight this album and the hits of September 1974. School After a soft start with harmonica and kids playing on the playground, this song builds through wistful Hodgson-led lyrics into a jam session with piano and marimba. Bloody Well Right Rick Davies takes the lead vocals and shows his keyboard chops on a jazz organ lead-in. Probably one of Rob's all time favorite songs. Crime of the Century This title track was the piece that the band felt was the strongest song on the album. The lyrics are self-reflective, where the instigators of the crime of the century are "you and me." Dreamer Who can forget this biggest hit from the album? This song was composed by Roger Hodgson at the age of 19. Hodgson and Davies swap vocal duties, with Hodgson taking the high harmonies. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "The Rockford Files" James Garner played a down and out detective in this TV series that started in September of 74 and lasted through 1980. STAFF PICKS: Elton John - The Bitch is Back Brian's staff pick highlights this song from Elton John's album Caribou. The title comes from Bernie Taupin's wife's description of Elton John's moodiness. Although a popular song, it's title was controversial, and kept it from getting as much airplay as it otherwise might. The Raspberries - Starting Over Bruce's pick is from the Cleveland, Ohio group's final album. The Raspberries were influenced by The Beatles and The Who, and you can hear great harmonies in their songs. Reunion - LIFE IS A ROCK (But the Radio Rolled Me) Wayne brings us this pick, featuring a fast monotone lyric summary of the artists on the radio at the time. Gino Vanelli - People Gotta Move Rob's staff pick has an R&B crossover feel. French Canadian Gino Vanelli was one of the first Caucasian musicians to perform on Soul Train.
