The story so far: After getting trapped in a well in the middle of the woods without cell service, the boys stumble on a secret underground bunker labeled "Moleman's Movie Hole" decorated and stocked like an 80s VHS rental store. After discovering a magic box with a button that can materialize any item (while simultaneously killing someone in the world), having Eric die and then come back to life, and finally meeting Moleman himself, they are now just looking for any normalcy they can find trapped underground. The boys sit down for family movie night and decide to watch something with some real Hollywood class: The Monster of Camp Sunshine, a nudie cutie from 1964! When Jarrett J. Krosoczka was in high school, he was part of a program that sent students to be counselors at a camp for seriously ill kids and their families. Going into it, Jarrett was worried: Wouldn't it be depressing, to be around kids facing such a serious struggle? Wouldn't it be grim? But instead of the shadow of death, Jarrett found something else at Camp Sunshine: the hope and determination that gets people through the most troubled of times. Now, in his follow-up to the National Book Award finalist "Hey, Kiddo," Jarrett brings readers back to Camp Sunshine so we can meet the campers and fellow counselors who changed the course of his life.

If you've ever been to summer camp, or wish you had gotten the chance to go, you'll love hearing author and illustrator Jarrett J. Krosoczka talk with host Suzanne McCabe about his latest graphic memoir. It's called Sunshine: How One Camp Taught Me About Life, Death, and Hope. Camp Sunshine is not just any camp. It's a place in Maine where seriously ill kids and their families get the opportunity to just be themselves and enjoy campfire stories, wilderness activities, and the company of others who also are facing extraordinary challenges. During his senior year of high school in Worcester, Massachusetts, Jarrett signed up to be a counselor at Camp Sunshine. While he looked forward to the experience, he didn't quite know what to expect. He didn't know that it would change his life forever. Sunshine, which is published by Scholastic Graphix, is the recipient of the 2023 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, among other honors. Jarrett is also the author of the award-winning graphic memoir, Hey Kiddo!, and the wildly-popular Lunch Lady graphic novel series. I've never seen anything quite like the Monster of Camp Sunshine. On paper it makes some sort of sense, but the execution is so outrageous that it feels like my brain is melting every time I watch it. What really baffles me more than anything else is that to this day, it seems like nobody knows who made it!

The Fast Casual Nation Podcast offers exclusive interviews with experts ranging from top chefs and brand makers to executives and restaurants who work in one of the fastest-growing segments of the restaurant industry. In this episode, I chat with the chief executive officer of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Charles Watson. Watson, a veteran franchise professional, worked for several hospitality companies including Intercontinental Hotels Group and US Franchise Systems. We talk about his early introduction to the business as a boy, standing on a tub in his dad's restaurant doing dishes. Watson says, “I started at about nine standing on a bus tub in my dad's restaurant washing dishes. My dad described the dishwasher as the race car which was supposed to make it more attractive to me as a nine year old and I guess it.” Tropical Smoothie Cafe is about who they are as a brand and it is about the people, Watson says when I ask about brand strategy. “It's about us as a corporate support center, it's even more importantly about our franchisees who deliver our products and services to guests every day and when we think about that and we think about our culture we start with two words, inspire better. It's our belief at Tropical Smoothie Cafe that what we do every day matters.” Watson talks about their thirteen year partnership with Camp Sunshine. It is a retreat in Maine that offers support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through stages of a child's illness. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has raised close to $8 million over the years. At a recent franchisee convention, the brand announced the new national charity partnership with No Kid Hungry. The nonprofit helps nearly 12 million kids in America who are living in hunger. Watson says about the partnership, “And to think that we live in this country and we're blessed with so much and that there's still kids out there that are hungry every day, especially right now especially in the summer right? when school is out of session so through the partnership we really think Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations around the country will be able to really drive this partnership.” To hear about Tropical Smoothie Cafe's loyalty program and the brand's roll out for 2022 listen to this episode of Fast Casual Nation on Apple Podcasts.
Mica Loewy, a Social Worker in the pediatric oncology department at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, sat down with Chris and Christy to share about the work she does to help patients and their families through such a challenging time. Mica explains the role a Social Worker plays on the medical team for the patient and family—providing support and referring to resources particular to a family's needs. This includes helping parents with FMLA and financial aid forms, and making sure families are aware of the financial assistance, secondary insurance, etc. available to them, as well as programs and retreats offered by organizations like Lighthouse and Camp Sunshine. She also explains how having an established relationship with families can help with hard decisions, including end-of-life situations. Mica shares some of the misconceptions people have about Social Workers, and the difference between Child Life Specialists and Social Workers. She closes by encouraging families currently on the journey of childhood cancer to reach out to their Social Worker—especially if a long time has passed since connecting—and find out what resources might be a good fit at this particular point in their journey.

At a time that many of us feel there is less to celebrate than usual, today’s guest reminds us that despite the challenges there is so much good! Even better, he shares tips so you can see it for yourself. Jarrett J. Krosoczka, New York Times-bestselling author/illustrator behind the wildly popular Lunch Lady and Jedi Academy series, wrote the graphic memoir Hey, Kiddo that moved me profoundly. In it, he shares about the gift of his grandparents, who raised him because of his mother’s heroin addict. Today’s conversation will remind you that what you’ve weathered does not have to hinder your opportunity to live a better, bigger, bolder life now. SHOW NOTES: At 3 years old, Jarrett began being raised by his maternal grandparents while his mother was battling a heroin addiction. As the son of immigrants, Jarrett’s grandfather taught his children their lineage and the importance of hard work. Pandora’s Box: As a child, Jarrett used sketching as a way to process his unique situation yet it was when his wife was pregnant with their first child that talk therapy helped him better understand his past. “My grandfather once said I was sickeningly well-behaved as a kid. Part of that was fear losing stability.” Hey, Kiddo: In Jarrett’s award-winning young adult memoir, he candidly shares his unconventional childhood, the nightmares that haunted him and how drawing became his outlet to express himself. In 2012, Jarrett openly shared about his childhood for the first time publicly during a TED Talk. This allowed him to find the balance of sharing his story, hearing other’s stories and self-care to prepare him to write Hey, Kiddo. Watch his TED Talk here. In the audio-version of Hey, Kiddo, the influential teachers in Jarrett’s life voiced their parts of the story. While working at Camp Sunshine, a family camp for critically and terminally ill children, Jarrett was inspired to create more tender stories for a younger audience. Jarrett’s second graphic novel Sunshine will be published in 2021 and details the life-changing story of a Camp Sunshine camper + the profound impact it had on his life. Raising compassionate kids: “As parents, we lead by example. We suspect our kids aren’t paying attention but they will remember the way we behaved more so than the way we talked.” Two-year process: Receiving dozens of rejection letters from publishers, Jarrett figured they favored his illustrations over his writing. Every week, he’d send new artwork to publishers which led to a publishing deal for his first book Good Night, Monkey Boy. In his wildly successful Lunch Lady series, Jarrett highlights the often-overlooked and underappreciated workforce of those serving children. Get Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s book Hey, Kiddo here. Pre-order Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s second graphic novel Sunshine here. Learn more about Jarrett J. Krosoczka here. JEREMY + ADRIENNE CAMP'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Jeff took the time to stay up late and join us for a night of comedy as our Visiting Professor. Seriously, this man should be on stage. He was quick with the one-liners, ribbed our Headmaster like a pro (we all do), and laughed hard along with the rest of the faculty. Megan is a MMJ patient and since this is the #420 episode wanted a twist on the importance of this drug known as Cannabis and how its properties are beneficial for people like Megan who suffer from what is classified as MS an invisible illness. When Megan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007, she turned to her doctors and modern medicine to help her manage her condition, but after years of failing to find the right thing for her body and her disease, she found she was a shell of the person she once was and that the quality of her life had diminished drastically. The drugs she was taking for her MS were doing more harm than good, her chronic pain was off the charts and the mom of three that used to run 6-8 miles daily could barely make it around the block to walk the family dog. Shifting to a natural based protocol has truly been life altering for Megan and she is extremely motivated to share what she has learned with others. She and her husband purchased a 5 acre piece of property in Washington state and are working to open Camp Sunshine, which will provide educational classes and instruction on growing and using cannabis and hemp, along with hosting cannabis friendly events and festivals. This drug has such a powerful and beneficial impact on the people who need it so lets make the world pro cannabis and less prescribed.

Georgia receiver J.J. Holloman was dismissed from the Bulldogs last week after a domestic violence issue. What will this mean for a team already thin at receiver after losing four of its top pass catchers off last year's team? Who will be the guys to step up? Will Demetris Robertson now be the guy? Will a freshman step in and shine? Will it be a running back? A grad transfer? A lot of questions will be asked of the Bulldogs going into the season and we answer them for you. Also: Claxton drafted, price of Georgia-Oregon tickets and the Bulldogs head to Camp Sunshine.

Cancer and fun aren't two words that normally go together. And for children with cancer, a diagnosis seems to rapidly speed up the aging process. One day you have no worries, and the next day you're fighting cancer. But for Camp Sunshine, one thing doesn't change: a kid is still a kid. And they should have just as must joy in their lives as any other child. The story of Camp Sunshine is one of hope, but also of inspiration and will to make lives better, even in bad situations. Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness. Camp Sunshine goes above and beyond giving kids with cancer a wonderful place to play and be free. They offer year-round programs, which allow children with cancer and their families to share similar experiences and to participate in activities that promote normal childhood development as they cope with the challenges of childhood cancer. They are the only program in the nation that has year-round offers, while not only serving children but also their families. The program is free of charge to families and includes on-site medical and psychosocial support. Camp Sunshine was recognized by GreatNonprofits as a 2017 Top-Rated Organization. So Ken and I were the beginning Break My Fall. Soon, the key club trip to Camp Sunshine rolled around and Eric and I began talking seriously about music and he auditioned. He blew our minds and we moved our equipment to his house when Mike called us out of the blue. I had originally requested him for the band but he was at the time in another group. They broke up and he was free as a bird, so he wondered if he could still audition, he did and he blew us away. We rehearsed and rehearsed and rehearsed and played our first gig on a boat for my mothers birthday. We wrote some originals and got the amazing chance to play the main stage of the Worcester Palladium in a battle of the bands. We recorded a live demo and decided we really needed something to complete our sound. We started scouting for a lead vocalist and a mutual friend Ryse auditioned, we had seen her once or twice and were friends of her solo acoustic act. In a crowded house of friends, Ryse grabbed a mic and jammed with us, she got the job and we got our sound. So here we are, and we're here to stay, we're Break My Fall http://www.myspace.com/br3akmyfa11 www.wscafm.org fantalkwscafm@gmail.com
Poker star Phil Laak shattered the endurance record by playing 115 hours of poker at the Bellagio from Wednesday June 2 through Monday June 7. I spoke with him as the clock ticked down to 115 hours, nearly two days longer than the prior 72 hour record set in 2004. It's a weird chat but keep in mind the guy was up for five days. He finished up $6,766, which he'll split with Camp Sunshine, a camp for ill children and their families in Maine.
