In this episode, Jason caps off our impromptu Peter Cushing triple feature with a unique selection from the vaults of Hammer Films. So join us as we check out Night Creatures (also known as Captain Clegg) from 1962. Marvel alongside us as we enjoy an action packed Cushing character and ponder over the plot being one of the ur-text for Scooby Doo style plotlines. But before all that, our mini-book club continues, plus both hosts have a buffet of new watches to geek out over, including some high praise from Dustin for, of all things, a new Marvel animation project. For HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST, our loaded celebration of horror, we will always make room for the thrills and chills of Hammer movies. Each Wednesday in October is “Hammer Horror Humpdays” and we're tracking some Oliver Reed films. Today's discussion is like a mystery/adventure/horror hybrid. Horror in a more classical sense as we go back to the late 18th century in the wake of the death of a notorious pirate. The township prospers but nobody goes to the marsh at night because it is haunted by skeletal phantoms that have scared at least one man to death. Seems strange so the British navy has come to investigate what they suspect is war-time bootlegging by the town Priest and his co-horts. Unfortunately for the Priest, these officers have brought a ghost from the past in tow. We're talking “NIGHT CREATURES” (or “Captain Clegg” if you're nasty) from 1962 directed by Peter Graham Scott and starring the great Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed, Patrick Allen & Milton Reid. An enjoyable, if troubling, movie in some ways but we got our own spin on what went on with the story before the story. Peter Cushing is pretty great in this and is, underhandedly, the biggest villain. They're all villains, truly. Nostalgia for Old Black Friday is a sad thing… But what isn't sad is our autumnal discussion about all things improv rap, Apple, weird Hulu commercials, post-Halloween watches, BeWAUGHnd Fest, and our feature conversation on A24's highest grossing horror film to date, TALK TO ME. Hey everyone, Karen from the Planet 8 Podcast is back, and I've roped her into talking with me about another Hammer film! This one isn't as highly regarded as the last one we covered, but I enjoy it quite a bit, as my favorite Hammer actor Peter Cushing is front and center, plus it hits my nostalgia button as well! There is a great cast and a lot of swashbuckling fun to be had, so pop in your earbuds and let us walk you through the Romney Marsh! As usual, if you'd like to leave any feedback for the show, you can do so through email at Magazinesandmonsters@gmail.com or to me on Twitter @Billyd_licious or on the show's FB or Tumblr pages (just search Magazines and Monsters). You can find Karen on Twitter @walker_km and on the Planet 8 Podcast! And please consider donating to the GoFundMe set up to help Larry and his family (click the link here). Hello! And welcome to the fifth episode of Hammer House of Podcast, where Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and L.M. Myles (Verity!) discuss, in order of UK release, every horror movie made by Hammer Film Productions between 1955 and 1976, from The Quatermass Xperiment to To the Devil… A Daughter. Technically, maybe, Captain Clegg may not be a horror movie, but it does have Peter Cushing in it, and a scary marsh, and skeletons on skeletal horses...which sounds quite horror-ish but that's merely a cunning ruse in the first five minutes to suggest it might be a horror. And the first two minutes is a cunning to ruse to suggest it might be a pirate movie. It is neither of these things. Rather tis a charming tale of 18th century village life very rudely interrupted by some soldiers who have issues with reasonably priced fine wines. For shame.
Today Ken welcomes author, artist, and personal hero Stephen Bissette to the show. Ken and Steve discuss Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Medic, Davey Crocket phases, Disney Halloween, Donald Duck, witches, Green Acres, Mr. Peepers, Dick Van Dyke Show, Elizabeth Montgomery, TV Guide covers, the 1950s, Dr. Syn The Scarecrow, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Jeff Goldblum as Ichabod Crane, Dick Smith's Dorian Gray, David Suskind, Secret Agent Man, Patrick MacGoohan, Captain Clegg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mr. Boogedy, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Red Skelton's Halloween episodes, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff's crossdressing role on Honey West, Star Trek Halloween, Famous Monsters, Make Room for Daddy, having a pumpkin stuck on your head, scary Cheetah masks, raising hell with teens, Night of the Living Dead, Dusk til dawn Drive-In marathons, Twilight Zone marathons and why John Carpenter's Halloween is still the best Halloween media.
