Which three composers tore up the rule book and changed music forever? Joanna and Stephen begin this episode with the cold-blooded murderer, Carlo Gesualdo - a dreadful man who composed sacred music. Known for plundering the depths of emotion in his madrigals, Gesualdo's 'word-paintings' broke the 16th century Venosan equivalent of the internet. We also discover how Beethoven reimagined the symphony and explore Stravinsky's daring new experiments in rhythm and orchestration.
A granular de/reconstruction of two late madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613), who murdered his wife and her lover "in flagranti". Soundtrack for a live performance with the actor Markus Hering, premiered at the Basilika Sonntagberg on October 28, 2023. Commissioned by the festival Klangraum Waidhofen. https://essl.at/works/gesualdo-fragmente.html
DESCENDING INTO THE SHORT DAYS OF THE DARK SEASON, once again we seek music that portrays human emotions at their most vulnerable: music of pathos, loss and remembrance. These are some of our most powerful and deeply affecting feelings, and they require music that touches the depths of our souls. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a special program of sacred choral, vocal and instrumental music for the dark season, from longtime guest producer ELLEN HOLMES called LAMENTO 2. A lament is a cathartic song or poem expressing grief or mourning: a recognition of the ultimate sadness of mortality. Many of the oldest and most enduring poems in human history have been laments; they're found in the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Hindu Vedas, and in ancient Near Eastern religious texts, including the Old Testament. We'll feature selections extending across 500 years of western classical music, by JOSQUIN DES PREZ, CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI, CARLO GESUALDO, DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE, ANTONIO VIVALDI, GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL, JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH, LILY BOULANGER, RALPH LAURIDSEN, LISA GERRARD, STELLAMARA, LES NOUVELLES POLYPHONIES CORSES, and MAX RICHTER. 25-rių metų amžiaus amerikietis Robertas Craftas (1923-2015) ketino atlikti Igorio Stravinskio muziką ir susidraugavo su kompozitoriumi, kone ketvirčiui amžiaus tapdamas jo sekretoriumi.
Who doesn't like true crime? According to totally accurate information we see on Instagram, bingeing on true crime means you might be a psychopath. We say binge away. In our opionin someone who brutally murders his wife and her lover upon discovering them in flagrante delicto is more of a psychopath than your run of the mill 20-40 year old modern era woman (or man) with a Netflix account.Carlo Gesualdo is not a household name by any means, but his music has managed to stand the test of time. It's somewhat mind boggling how much of a footnote his crime is in the story of his life. October equals spooky season and for the Fritz Boyz that means even more spooky season themed episodes are on the way. Enjoy!

Katy Brand talks to Michael Berkeley about obsession, opera, brass bands and juggling her career as a comedian, actor, novelist and screenwriter. On television, Katy Brand's Big Ass Comedy Show ran for three series and won her a British Comedy Award, and she has appeared in everything from Peep Show to Midsomer Murders. Her stand-up shows at the Edinburgh Festival have been highly acclaimed, and she is a regular on BBC Radio comedy and drama. Katy has starred in musicals such as West Side Story and Everyone's Talking About Jamie; and she has written plays and screenplays – her feature film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, starring Emma Thompson, premiered at the recent Sundance Festival and will be on our cinema screens this autumn. Katy tells Michael about her childhood experience as an extra at the Royal Opera House; her grandfather, the trumpet player and brass band conductor Geoffrey Brand; and her passion for the madrigals of the 17th-century Italian composer Carlo Gesualdo. And she describes the obsessions that dominated her early life, which have provided rich material for her books and comedy shows: her conversion to born-again Christianity as a teenager and her ongoing passion for the films Dirty Dancing and Mary Poppins. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3

Happy Halloween! Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa was a mysterious man who was haunted by the crimes committed in his youth. His position as prince held him above the law, and he abused his power, isolating himself from the world with only his music to comfort him. This episode contains depictions of the gruesome murders of Don Fabrizio Carafa, Duke of Andria and Donna Maria d'Avalos. Finally, as we wave farewell to the English summer, Any Other Business has a familiarly sporting air…
A&E debuts its life of Biggie Smalls at last, and my Mark And Sarah Talk About Songs co-host, Mark Blankenship, has a few thoughts on Jay-Z, versification, and whether it matters that the film spends only a few minutes on Christopher Wallace's murder. Then we take a detour into the Werner-Herzog weird with a German-TV docu on Italian madrigal composer and melodramatic murderer Carlo Gesualdo. Please watch Death For Five Voices and discuss it with us in the forums, because we feel like we're having all the strokes when a ghostly re-enactor whips out a boombox.
