This week Gramophone's Editor Martin Cullingford is joined by Owain Park, conductor, composer and founding director of The Gesualdo Six to explore the ensemble's new album, 'Morning Star', a programme of music for the feast of Epiphany, released by Hyperion Records.
Which three composers tore up the rule book and changed music forever? Joanna and Stephen begin this episode with the cold-blooded murderer, Carlo Gesualdo - a dreadful man who composed sacred music. Known for plundering the depths of emotion in his madrigals, Gesualdo's 'word-paintings' broke the 16th century Venosan equivalent of the internet. We also discover how Beethoven reimagined the symphony and explore Stravinsky's daring new experiments in rhythm and orchestration.
A granular de/reconstruction of two late madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613), who murdered his wife and her lover "in flagranti". Welcome to Episode 1289 in which Marc Millon interviews Silvia Fonzone of the Fonzone Winery in Irpinia. More about the Fonzone Winery: The Fonzone Caccese estate is located in Paternopoli, one of the seventeen municipalities of the Taurasi DOCG area, in the province of Avellino. The company boasts over twelve hectares of Aglianico, out of which the following wines are produced: Mattoda' Irpinia DOC Campi Taurasini and Scorzagalline Taurasi DOCG Riserva made with the grapes coming from the highest portion of the vineyard. Furthermore, the vineyards of Falanghina, destined for the production of the Irpinia Falanghina DOC Le Mattine, complete the vineyard area of the estate. The hill where the company estate extends, just outside the town, is located in the “Campi Taurasini” sub-area, and is surrounded by the municipalities of Villamaina, Castelfranci and Gesualdo, whose castle was inhabited by a branch of the Caccese family, from 1856 to 1980. The vineyards extend on both sides of the hill, benefiting from multiple exposures and an altitude ranging from 360 m to 430 m / above sea level. The hill includes both clayey – calcareous soils and looser textured soils, of clear sedimentary origin, and is surrounded by the Fredane and Ifalco streams, which clearly influence the microclimate of the entire area. Furthermore, given the proximity to Vesuvius as the crow flies, the first two layers of the soil have volcanic dust, deposit of the eruptions that took place over the centuries.

Owain Park of Gesualdo Six joins us to discuss the origins of the ensemble. We chat about the many traditions for a vocal consort, from the sacred elements associated with a cappella music to the members' conventional training as pianists and organists and backgrounds working at cathedrals. We talk about their recent pandemic-inspired projects recording Héloïse Werner's Coronasolfège and their new(ish) podcast, G6. We speak a bit about their composition competition, and the typical challenges associated with composing for an a cappella ensemble. The Gesualdo Six is an award-winning British vocal ensemble comprising some of the UK's finest consort singers, directed by Owain Park. Praised for their imaginative programming and impeccable blend, the ensemble formed in 2014 for a performance of Gesualdo's Tenebrae Responsories in Cambridge and has gone on to perform at numerous major festivals across the UK, Europe, North America and Australia. Notable highlights include a concert as part of the distinguished Deutschlandradio Debut Series, debut at Wigmore Hall in 2021, and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, London Mozart Players, Luxmuralis, William Barton and Matilda Lloyd. The ensemble integrates educational work into its activities, regularly holding workshops for young musicians and composers. The Gesualdo Six has curated two Composition Competitions, with the 2019 edition attracting entries from over three hundred composers around the world. A&E debuts its life of Biggie Smalls at last, and my Mark And Sarah Talk About Songs co-host, Mark Blankenship, has a few thoughts on Jay-Z, versification, and whether it matters that the film spends only a few minutes on Christopher Wallace's murder. Then we take a detour into the Werner-Herzog weird with a German-TV docu on Italian madrigal composer and melodramatic murderer Carlo Gesualdo. Please watch Death For Five Voices and discuss it with us in the forums, because we feel like we're having all the strokes when a ghostly re-enactor whips out a boombox.
