Tune in here to this Thursday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking with North Carolina State Senator, Brad Overcash, about the Raise the Age bill, whether or not Governor Cooper will veto the bill and how the bill will impact Carolinians. At this time criminals will exploit the law by having 16 and 17 year-olds commit serious crimes on their behalf because they know that these kids will receive lighter sentences. This bill is intended to cut down on these instances and hopefully incentivize these young people to think twice before they commit these serious felonies. Later in the show Brett is joined by Scott Hamilton from the WBT Newsroom to discuss seeing a B-17 bomber at the York County airport for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. “S” is for Seabrook, Whitemarsh Benjamin (1793-1855). Governor. As a member of the most radical political factions in the state, Seabrook urged Carolinians to prepare for secession and the military defense of the state and its institutions.
Have you ever wondered how South Carolinians paid for goods and services before the advent of the U.S. dollar? The pound sterling formed the basis of their accounts until the 1790s, but the economic realities of frontier life obliged early Carolinians to embrace monetary tools and strategies that deviated from British traditions. For more than a century, inhabitants of the Palmetto State used foreign coins, paper bills, promissory notes, and sophisticated credit schemes that fueled upward mobility and set the stage for the financial systems we use today.
In the United States, we're required by law to file our tax returns, and the IRS depends upon our honest reporting. It's been several years since North Carolina lawmakers enacted, and then were forced by public opinion to repeal, HB2 – the infamous bathroom bill. The first bottled bbq sauce, first reverse flow bbq, the first time the word Barbecue was even written in the United States even…? GA BBQ is a large part of the bbq enjoyed across the USA. Why not celebrate it? Ed Reilly thought that with the amount of bbq history in Georgia it's high time Georgians had a seat at the bbq table. After all the research it seems like bbq tables were started in Georgia anyways…. We chatted about the holiday and the history it stands for, it's definitely something you'll want to keep bookmarked. Especially since Carolinians can't decide what they are doing, Texas is all about brisket since the 50-60s, not sure where Missouri got their bbq super powers. Georgia really should be part of the conversation. Here's hoping Ed can get this to be a national holiday too one day so we can get a day off to BBQ. I think we can all agree that's a good idea… Join Georgia in celebrating Georgia Barbecue Day this and every March 25th.
Seacoast Summerville Campus Pastor Roy Jacques opens up about personal struggles with his weight. In High School, he was a State Champion Baseball player for the James Island Trojans. As an adult, he has struggled with his physical health. His main foe? A food addiction. With two of his close friends, pastors Jeff Leinberger and Joey Svendsen, the three discuss whether Roy is "living in sin," given his lack of self-care. Roy lets us in on his up-and-down journey of finding healthier life habits and losing weight, then giving way to complacency. He talks about the impact his weight has on his confidence, his lack of success with accountability, and whether he considers this struggle "his Thorn" (2 Corinthians 12:17). In turn, Jeff shares his lifestyle of being physically in great shape, but for all the wrong reasons. At the top of the episode, founding Pastor Greg Surratt shares his thoughts on various topics, including his wish for palmetto bugs and Carolinians to "live together peacefully." Hurricane Ian is making landfall Wednesday in Florida before continuing across the state. The storm will reemerge into the Atlantic Ocean waters off the East Coast. This will allow Ian, then expected to be a tropical storm, to make a second landfall somewhere along the Georgia or South Carolina coast Friday. The biggest threat from Ian in the Carolinas will be flooding, with rainfall amounts between 6 and 8 inches and storm surge upward of 3 feet along the coast. The storm could also produce an isolated number of tornadoes. Following a potential second landfall Friday, the storm will push inland where it will weaken into a tropical depression. Impacts from the storm are still expected across all of North Carolina and South Carolina from the remnants of this storm. Localized flash flooding is the greatest threat for many Carolinians. Campaign 1996For me it was the campaign of my lifetime. No race ever equaled the life altering impact of that year in my life. This was the year that I got to see up-close two of the political figures I most admired, Senator Bob Dole of Kansas and Strom Thurmond. The South Carolina Presidential Primary turned out to be the most important of all the primaries that year as Bob Dole was in a fight for his political Presidential survival and two Governors and Strom Thurmond stepped in to help him win it. Then that same organization stepped up to insure that Strom Thurmond was re-elected to a 8th term. I was a tiny little cog as a volunteer and College Republican Chairman at Lander University in Greenwood S.C. and after graduating I helped out in my hometown of Myrtle Beach. I had been around politics all my life but it was 1996 that I got to be right there, for the first time, at the feet of two of the political figures I most admired as they campaigned across South Carolina, first in the upstate for Dole and then for Thurmond in the Low Country. In the Thurmond race there really was only one issue and that was the Senator's age. National publications were trying to cast doubt on the Senator's mental fitness ( a totally bogus charge, I was there and the man was amazing) , the Democrats from Washington D.C. had recruited a billionaire member of the Springs Mills family, a huge textile company, in Elliot Close, and finally there had begun an influx of new residents into the state that were not as familiar with Thurmond's actual record of constituent service as the native Carolinians had been. If ever Senator Thurmond appeared to be vulnerable in his 74 year career, this was it. But D.C. just did not know S.C. as well as it thought it did. Thurmond put together an incredible team to shore up his political defenses. He had two governors, Carroll Campbell and David Beasley working on his behalf, arguably one of the best Republican Party Chairmen in the nation in Henry McMaster working for him, and three legendary political campaign people working on his behalf in Manager Tony Denny, and consultants Cindy Carter Thompson and a very young Robert Cahaly (The Trafalgar Group) all on the team. Not only that, he had the State's Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler and its Speaker of the House David Wilkins on Board and Myrtle Beach's famous State Representative Mark Kelly all working overtime to insure Thurmond won. And let's not forget, the two day - 10 county nonstop bus trip across the state, known as "The Thurmondator Bus Tour" where Strom Thurmond himself barnstormed the state, courthouse to courthouse, festival to festival, just like a campaign of old. Elliot Close did not know what hit him. This episode is that story and you will be able to relive as much of it as I was able to save. By the time this show is over you will be quoting the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, "I feel Good!!!" As Mr. Brown makes an appearance to help Senator Thurmond celebrate this final election victory to capstone his incredible life and career. ** I wish to acknowledge the fine work of WIS TV 10, SC ETV, and CNN for their news broadcasts that we used in putting these three podcasts together, much of which was aired over a three day period when the senator passed away. Rival claims to the land of South Carolina sparked hostility between England and Spain that shaped the first 78 years of the colony's existence. The English considered Floridians to be jealous rivals, while the Spanish saw Carolinians as habitual trespassers. Spain held a better claim to the contested territory, but British colonists eventually won the land by force.

"G" is for Gaillard, John (1765-1826). U.S. senator. A native South Carolinian, Gaillard went to England with his family during the American Revolution. He studied law, but opted to return to South Carolina and become a planter. From 1794-1804 he represented St. Stephen’s Parish in the General Assembly—as state representative and senator. In 1804 the legislature elected him U.S. Senator and he served continuously until his death. Politically, he was a Democratic-Republican and supporter of the Jefferson and Madison administrations. Following the War of 1812, however, he followed other Carolinians in retreating toward a more states’-rights position on such matters as the tariff. In an era of controversy, John Gaillard was one of the few national political figures that appeared to his colleagues in the U.S. Senate to be above the fray—a statesman.
"F" is for the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina [1669-1698]. Part Constitution and part promotional tract, the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina comprised a much-revised document that the Lords Proprietors created to govern their New World province. Among the guiding principles of the constitutions were that landownership was the bedrock of society and that Carolina’s government should avoid creating a "numerous democracy." The proprietors’ insistence on provisions for considerable religious liberty was innovative. From 1669 to 1698 the proprietors promulgated four amended versions of their unalterable Fundamental Constitutions, each of which was shorter and granted more political concessions to the Carolinians than its predecessor. The final version of the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina was issued in April 1698 and debated off and on for several years in the Commons House of Assembly, but was never accepted by the colonists.
"M" is for Medal of Honor Recipients. Approved by Congress in 1862, the Medal of Honor is America's highest award for military valor. The first native son to receive the award was Ernest A. Garlington of Newberry for "distinguished gallantry" at the Battle of Wounded Knee in 1892. Eight South Carolinians were awarded the medal during World War I. During World War II, five Carolinians were awarded the medal. During the Korean War, three of the four men were presented the honor posthumously. Seven Carolinians were awarded the medal during America's involvement in Vietnam, including the last medal presented during that conflict. All together, thirty native sons of South Carolina have been awarded the medal for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" above that of their comrades in arms—one third of them made the supreme sacrifice.

A crew of Californians and Carolinians converge on Oregon’s Rogue River during the peak of summer. “Summer Road Trip Part 1: Going Rogue” is the first part of the adventure. This episode is a quick snapshot of the first 2,000 miles of driving in a mechanically challenged van full of kayaks and surfing gear. The crux comes early in Topeka, Kansas. During the episode introduction, Russell and I discuss bike riding with friends on the Upper Davidson River and the controversy surrounding the skipping of rocks in a place that is home to hellbender salamanders. He quickly loses interest after I tell him that we can’t touch the microphone. We agree to call a Pisgah National Forest Ranger to ask about the rock skipping. Producer Notes: I hope to release episodes on a regular basis. At least twice a month. Weekly? So, I am trying a new format that will make it easier for me to publish Adventure Airwaves. The first two episodes - as short as they are - took a long time to make. Russell is a good co-host but he doesn’t help with production, writing, editing, graphics, or all the Internet stuff. To speed up the process, I created Episode 3 from previous recordings while on a two hour flight (a self imposed time limit). On Episode 4, the story was kept short and perhaps pointless. I did my best to ad-lib an introduction (with Russell’s help) and used the first take. I hope you enjoy this summertime snap-shot. For 21,609 young African American men who called North Carolina home, the First World War meant leaving families and familiar Tar Heel communities. The military service and sacrifice of those tens of thousands of black North Carolinians, however, are not well known among historians or the public. Their contributions, individually and collectively, have been generally ignored, simplistically rendered, represented by only a few, hidden away in disparate and scattered sources, or carried to the grave without articulation or preservation. The war’s centennial offers an opportunity to examine that void and to highlight the collective service black North Carolinians rendered. Janet G. Hudson is a historian, two-time winner of the Stephen L. Dalton Distinguished Teacher Award, and author of the prize-winning book, Entangled by White Supremacy: Reform in World War I-era South Carolina. Her project, Black Soldiers Mattered, is an online digital humanities project that explores African American soldiers from North Carolina who served in World War I. It can be found at http://blacksoldiersmattered.com.

Military Men and Women Matter with John Falkenbury: Have you ever wondered how service men and women adapt and grow from service troubles? Or if there was some way you can help to do something that could benefit their lives? Well today we have the president of the North Carolina USO with us, Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel John Falkenbury. He is going to talk with us about what the USO does and how they help our military overcome struggles they are faced with. John currently lives in the Charlotte area and travels at least once a week to their state office in Raleigh. He is a third generation career military with his grandfather, father and brother also serving. His family has a history of serving during times of peace and war. In 1999, John retired from the Army to take over a family business. Their family business was a nursing home. It was a change of pace for him but definitely the right thing to do. When 9-11 occurred, he felt an urge to volunteer and go back. He had several good friends telling him that he was doing exactly what he needed to be doing at that time. He was currently telling his army story and the military story on radios and television in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas. John heard about how the North Carolina USO was undergoing some changes and their need for a president. He applied and was offered the job in 2009. The North Carolina USO is the oldest operating USO in the world because of their Camp Lejeune center. In 2003 that was their only remaining center in the state. Since then they have opened nine more centers and a mobile unit. They are one of the few, besides the National USO, that has a mobile unit. All of their funding comes from within the state from the generosity of Carolinians. The USO, as a whole, has been serving wounded and hurting service members consistently for 75 years now. It is much bigger than entertainment and airport lounges. Many people associate the USO with those things. Their national mission is to connect service members with their family, home and nation. They fill the gap where the military services can’t fulfill. They have multiple programs that help a service member when they enter into the service, during their time of serving, exiting the service and after they have served. The USO works hand in hand with the military. They don’t replicate services because that isn’t a good use of their funds. They will continue to do the airport lounges, the home comings, the send offs, as well as reading bedtime stories to children but more importantly, they have to be there for the resiliency programs, the transition phases and the multitude of other programs they offer. The USO has an amazing honor support team. If a service member is killed overseas, the team ensures they are treated with respect on their way back home. They make sure the plane is there waiting to receive the casket and the Honor Guard is there to escort the member to their final resting place. If someone is traveling throughout the country, the USO network activates. They communicate between each other to help with the travel making sure nobody is alone. Among many other things, the North Carolina USO will focus on a service member and their spouse during the time of separation from the military. They will teach them how to build their resumes, dress for success and will do mock interviews. Their goal is to not only educate the service member on getting a job but to also educate the corporate world. One thing they do around the state is hold HR Summits for companies. They want these companies to know the military culture, the rank structure, awards, things that aren’t appropriate to say or ask a military member. They will also offer job fairs to help the member get connected with companies that are looking to hire. The North Carolina USO really goes above and beyond to help our service members transition into a civilian lifestyle. The North Carolina USO has many programs such as the resiliency program and the reset program. The resiliency program teaches techniques of how to overcome negative self-talk. Negative self-talk can lead to much heavier internal conflicts. The reset program has a resiliency part to it and adds in life skills to incorporate into the home life. Stephen has had the honor of speaking at both programs. When Stephen was at his first resiliency program, he spoke for about 30 minutes. He had a young man come up to him afterwards and said that he really connected with Stephen’s story. That young man also shared that he was planning on taking his own life that night but had changed his mind. The Journey Principles has a goal to help reduce military suicide by 10%. We have locked arms in multiple ways with the North Carolina USO. And each time our relationship gets stronger. In September we are partnering with them to host an event called Light Up the Darkness. The goal of this event is to raise awareness and funds to continue serving service members and their families. John talks about the greatest struggle in the military with active service members. He says it is operational tempo and declining resources. One of the first things to get cut in the military is the family resources. That is where the USO fills the gap. They are here to help not only the service member but also their family. As a nation we owe a debt of gratitude to these service members. We have been in a war for 13 plus years now and 98-99% of the American citizens have not been directly affected by it. There is currently 1%, or less, that is serving in the military. And they continue to do so freely and without reservation. We should be proud of our men and women serving for the country. There are many ways that you can help this amazing organization! They are always accepting donations either online or via mail. 92 cents of every dollar goes towards these amazing programs John tells us about. But money is not the only way someone can help. Giving your time is also a great way to contribute towards their cause. The heart of their volunteers is what keeps this organization going. And one more way you can help the USO is by donating items. For example a company just came into the USO lounge at the Raleigh airport and redecorated. It helps make these service members feel more at home. You can get in contact with the North Carolina USO through their website, uso-nc.org or through Twitter and Facebook. All the centers across the state also have their own Facebook page. We know that today’s podcast was a little different than most of our others. But we sincerely hope you enjoyed hearing about this great organization and how they help our military overcome their struggles. The USO is truly an amazing organization that has passion and dedication to helping and serving the ones who so selflessly serve us. Please like, share and comment if you enjoyed the show. Also continue to send in your questions and comments to us, feedback@journeyprinciples.com. Until next time, be sure to follow us on Facebook, Stephen Scoggins The Journey Principles, and on Twitter, Stephen_scoggin. We look forward to seeing you again on the next Journey Principles!
