Writer, programmer, and tech consultant Alex Reisner joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about his recent Atlantic articles on Books3, a massive data set that includes hundreds of thousands of pirated e-books, and that Meta and other companies have used to train generative AI. Reisner explains how he extracted book names and titles from long strings of text in Books3 to create a searchable database, and why not finding yourself in the database doesn't mean your work is safe. He also reflects on the dangers of metaphorical language in discussing AI, what he's heard from legal experts, what publishers are and aren't doing, and how piracy has shifted from benefiting individuals to helping corporations profit. In 1918, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and naturalist writer John Burroughs took one of many long distance road trips together. The combination of their unique forms of genius, especially when viewed against the backdrop of WWI and the Influenza pandemic, makes it possible to see just how critical their curiosity was to every form of success they achieved. In this episode of The Sourcing Hero podcast, Host Kelly Barner welcomes Wes Davis. Wes has a Ph.D. in English Literature from Princeton University and taught at Yale for nearly a decade. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and The Nation. Wes is also the author of multiple books, one of which is the recently released ‘American Journey: On the Road with Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and John Burroughs' - and that book will be the focus of our conversation today. In this interview, Wes talks about some of the unique characteristics of these consequential historical figures and sheds light on how we can learn from their mindset today: Why the ability of Ford and Edison to thrive in the industrial and natural worlds was part of their collective genius How unique and changeable the social and business landscape was in the early 20th century Whether Ford, Firestone, and Edison were, in fact, Sourcing Heroes in their own right

“For men like Ford, Firestone, and Edison, whose success in the world had given them access to any thing they might want, these impressions [of the great Smoky Mountains] had a value beyond calculation.” American Journey, p. 276 In 1918, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and naturalist John Burroughs took a long road trip in the eastern United States. They slept under the stars, cooked outside, and made their way through the countryside, meeting people, investigating curiosities, and deepening their friendships as they went. That story, and the events leading up to and following after it, serve as the focus for American Journey: On the Road with Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and John Burroughs, a new book by Wes Davis. In this episode of Dial P, Kelly Barner shares her impressions from American Journey: Just enough of the story of this journey and the friendships formed on it to provide context Observations about how business and society have changed in the 105 years since Ford, Firestone, Edison, and Burroughs took to the road Inspiration to look at things a little differently by maintaining a balance of innovation and time in nature Links: Kelly Barner on LinkedIn Dial P for Procurement on AOP

Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Wes Davis joins us to provide some definitions, insights, and perspectives on HVAC Codes and Standards from his role as Director of Technical Services at ACCA - The AirConditioning Contractors of America. We dig into details of the ANSI/RESNET/ACCA Standard 310, The Standard for Grading the Installation of HVAC Systems, published in June 2020. The 310 standard was written mainly to help builders earn RESNET HERS credit for installing AND commissioning residential HVAC systems. RESNET HERS scores are given to new construction homes for a host of benefits described here: https://www.hersindex.com/know-your-homes-hers-index-score/hers-index-understanding-the-hers-score/ Yet, the 310 standard, like the other ACCA standards, manuals, and publications (see links below), allows any technician or contractor to quickly assimilate industry and institutional knowledge from all the stakeholders that built, reviewed, and commented on the publications. This is a terrific way to build a better business. We also touch on the vast array of other member benefits avail at ACCA, like MIX groups, advocacy, forums, and technical support. Some of the most important moments in the lives of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison weren't their inventions or business successes. It was their road trips through the most remote, rustic parts of America. Between 1916 and 1924, Ford, Edison, Harvey Firestone went on a number of camping trips. Calling themselves the Vagabonds, they set up campsites, took photographs, and fixed cars themselves. They were also joined by famous naturalist John Burroughs, an elderly writer with a large white beard who looked like a gold prospector. The relationship began in 1913 between Burroughs, then 75, and Ford, nearly 50, and enjoying a banner year for the Model T. Both men were influenced by the writing of Ralph Waldo Emerson, but they disagreed about the role of the automobile in American life.To Ford's chagrin, Burroughs wrote in an article in Atlantic Monthly that the automobile “was going to kill the appreciation of nature”; Ford believed it would open up facets of America that most people could not access. In response, Ford sent Burroughs a new Model T, which indeed changed the old naturalist's life by prompting him to set out on wide-ranging road trips beyond his Hudson River homestead. Meanwhile, Ford and Edison, who had both “imbibed” the rural values of the Midwest, and Firestone, “the head of the largest tire manufacturing concern in the country,” were long-standing friends, busy plotting numerous new business ventures.Their road trips became increasingly ambitious to San Francisco, the Adirondacks of New York, and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Davis chronicles the memorable road trip of summer 1918, when the fast friends—who held wildly different views about the impending war—drove from the Allegheny range through West Virginia and into the “rustic magic of the Great Smoky Mountains,” all in the spirit of curiosity and exploration. To discuss these journeys, and the long-lasting impact it had on Ford, Edison, and 20th-century America, is today's guest Wes Davis, author of “American Journey: On the Road with Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Burroughs.”This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

Wes Davis On Ford And Edison Road Trips by The Watchdog
In 1913, an unlikely friendship blossomed between Henry Ford and famed naturalist John Burroughs. When their mutual interest in Ralph Waldo Emerson led them to set out in one of Ford's Model Ts to explore the Transcendentalist's New England, the trip would prove to be the first of many excursions that would take Ford and Burroughs, together with an enthusiastic Thomas Edison, across America. These travels profoundly influenced the way Ford, Edison, and Burroughs viewed the world, nudging their work in new directions through a transformative decade in American history. Join us when, Wes Davis re-creates these landmark adventures in American Journey on this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large.

We are witnessing exponentially rapid changes in technological advancement which recall the dawn of the industrial age when newly harnessed electricity first lit up our houses and the assembly line sent Model Ts motoring down your street and out into the countryside to points heretofore unseen.During this period, the two men most responsible for these wonders drove off together with our nation's foremost naturalist to seek adventure and wrestle with the practical and theoretical challenges faced when agrarian societies broke way to usher in the marvels of innovation. The road trips were winding and intricate and they wove through New York State, New England, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and points beyond. And when Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and John Burroughs rolled into your town in 1918 it must have felt like you were suddenly in the presence of The Beatles and Thor God of Thunder. These extensive camping treks were among the first American road trips, during a time when diners, motels and roadside assistance were not yet in existance. Good thing Tom and Henry were so handy with a wrench and a cylinder head. These epic trips are chronicled in Wes Davis's new book, American Journey: On The Road With Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Burroughs.Wes tells us how Ford began his career working for Edison's company, why Ford sent John Burroughs a free car and how the threesome first decided to take their conversations on the road. He also describes how their travel, conversations and friendship informed and influenced each of their world views and trajectories. We talk about their obsession with studying plant life, appreciating the power of moving water and stopping at abandoned mills to better understand how to find the tools and ingredients of invention within our natural world. We also address the gordian knot of Ford's altruism and antisemitism. Did his hateful published words encourage the fascism which led to the Holocaust? Wes says that the dark side of Ford's personality almost pulled him away from the project but that he approached the problem from Burroughs' point of view which was to push back and study the complexities of human nature.Plus, comedian Dylan Brody joins us to talk about his unique brand of smart, delibertate comedy, how story-telling can lead to social change and his new solo show opening at The Hollywood Improv Lab, 'Thinking Allowed', over a decade in the making.Path Points of Interest:Wes DavisAmerican Journey: On The Road With Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and John Burroughs by Wes DavisWes Davis on AmazonDylan BrodyThinking Allowed at The Lab on 6/20Dylan Brody on IMDBDylan Brody on YouTubeDylan Brody on TwitterDylan Brody Linktree

“You can expect what you inspect.” -W. Edwards Deming Which “appliance” in a house usually consumes the most energy? Which “appliance” in a house is constructed from multiple components that have never run before they are assembled on site? Wouldn't it be great if a terrific installation of said “appliance” gained you some HERS points? (Forgive my relative misuse of the word appliance – I needed to get your attention.) We are joined today by Wes Davis (Director of Technical Services at ACCA) and Scott Doyle (Technical Director at RESNET) to learn more about the first voluntary standard for additional rated features – Standard 310, Grading the Installation of HVAC Systems. While the standard was just published in June 2020, you can jump back to RESTALK Episode 20 to hear more about the early days of the development of this standard. While HVAC defaults can be used in a rating, builders will be excited to learn that in some cases up to an additional six (6) points may be available for an HVAC system installation rated according to Standard 310. The standard evaluates five (5) key aspects of an HVAC system: Design Review, Total Duct Leakage, Blower Fan Airflow, Blower Fan Watt Draw and Proper Refrigerant Charge. There are usually a couple options for evaluation of each aspect. Each aspect can get a Grade 1,2, or 3, which of course affects the final system grade. Raters can expand their skills in this important area by taking part in the free 4.5-hour training program followed by a field practical assessment. You can get more background on or review a copy of the standard 310 at the links below: https://www.resnet.us/wp-content/uploads/ANSIRESNETACCA_310-2020_v7.1.pdf https://www.resnet.us/raters/hvac-310-grading/ https://www.resnet.us/wp-content/uploads/DRAFT_RESNET_Std310HVACGrading_infographic_v01.pdf RESTalk: To the RESNET community, we hear you and want to engage. Wes Davis speaks on his experience with evangelism in this generation.
A crew of Californians and Carolinians converge on Oregon’s Rogue River during the peak of summer. “Summer Road Trip Part 1: Going Rogue” is the first part of the adventure. This episode is a quick snapshot of the first 2,000 miles of driving in a mechanically challenged van full of kayaks and surfing gear. The crux comes early in Topeka, Kansas. During the episode introduction, Russell and I discuss bike riding with friends on the Upper Davidson River and the controversy surrounding the skipping of rocks in a place that is home to hellbender salamanders. He quickly loses interest after I tell him that we can’t touch the microphone. We agree to call a Pisgah National Forest Ranger to ask about the rock skipping. Producer Notes: I hope to release episodes on a regular basis. At least twice a month. Weekly? So, I am trying a new format that will make it easier for me to publish Adventure Airwaves. The first two episodes - as short as they are - took a long time to make. Russell is a good co-host but he doesn’t help with production, writing, editing, graphics, or all the Internet stuff. To speed up the process, I created Episode 3 from previous recordings while on a two hour flight (a self imposed time limit). On Episode 4, the story was kept short and perhaps pointless. I did my best to ad-lib an introduction (with Russell’s help) and used the first take. I hope you enjoy this summertime snap-shot. In an era of two-hour Nose ascents and El Capitan Free Solos here is a story about two middle-aged friends who climbed an intermediate route and it took all day. In fact, this story isn’t about climbing in as much as it is about life itself. The crux comes early when a drunk stranger poses a question, makes a prediction, and then walks away. This story relates to anybody who has ever wondered if they would spend their silver years camping alone. Author’s Note: The East Buttress is technically part of El Capitan but it makes up the shoulder of the formation. Therefore, if you climb the East Buttress of El Cap the only folks who will say that you climbed “El Capitan” will be your parents. Unless your parents are rock climbers. In this story, the protagonist urinates on a belay tree covered in ants and is subsequently punished by Mother Nature. The protagonist must have felt that he was not in a position to hold it or move. I am sure he regrets it now and would never do that again. The moral - Don’t whizz at the belay because it disrespects the other beings - like rock climbers and ants. To read about this route from the legend, please see the article titled John Long’s Favorite 5.10.
