As "Toad" in "American Graffiti," Charles Martin Smith took playing the school nerd to new heights. Over 50 years later, the California-born actor-director co-stars opposite Toronto actress Anwen O'Driscoll in "This Time," director Robert Vaughn's very modern road picture now streaming on Super Channel.In between, Smith has acted with a Who's Who of Hollywood, including Burt Reynold ("Fuzz"), David Niven and Don Knotts (Disney's "No Deposit, No Return"), Sean Connery and Kevin Costner ("The Untouchables"), Jeff Bridges ("Starman") and Michael Keaton and Geena Davis ("Speechless"). His TV credits range from episodes of The Brady Bunch, Room 222 and The Streets of San Francisco to  LA Law, Northern Exposure and The X-Files.  He's worked on more Canadian shows and movies than most Canadians, including "Never Cry Wolf" and Da Vinci's Inquest.  His directing credits include "Air Bud" and "The Snow Walker."And then there are the roles that got away, including one he auditioned for -- Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars."Then there are his dad and uncles -- "Golden Age" animation directors for Walter Lantz, Disney and UPA. This week, we have a very important episode*. The Untouchables is a film that we've been trying to recast for a while. The first time we tried to recast it, the movie had dropped off the streaming services 6 hours earlier. Once we found out it was available again, we pounced on the opportunity. Except…..I had water pooling in my basement (every homeowner's nightmare) and had to postpone the recording by several hours. We barely made it through the first segment or so, until I'm pretty sure Mike actually fell asleep. However, we regrouped and recorded a really fun pod last night. The movie itself is a total classic, although I was personally disappointed by the music. It happened to be nominated for the Best Music Oscar, but I still call “bullshit”, it's not good. Set at  the turn of the century, prohibition laws are driving the showdown between Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and Al Capone (Robert De Niro). Sean Connery delivers as the “beat cop who's seen everything” role. As far as those roles go, I really think this is one of them that is to be judged against all future ones. Connery crushes this (see the “that's the Chicago WAY!” and the “That endeth the lesson” speeches). There are also some surprisingly fun performances by Charles Martin Smith (who is third billed!), Billy Drago (at creepy as ever), and Patricia Clarkson, who I'm usually not a fan of, but does a great job with this role. * It's really not important at all. Brian De Palma was coming off a couple of box office disappointments when he signed on to bring David Mamet's script “The Untouchables” to life. The studio was hoping for something akin to a movie version of their old TV show but this team opted to tell a more focused story, and that is both the success and failure of this movie. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘Mamet as screenwriter' series with 1987's “The Untouchables.” We talk about what works in Mamet's script and what doesn't, and why elements aren't working the way they should. We chat about De Palma and all of the De Palma-isms that he delivers here, never one to disappoint. We look at the key actors in the film – Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith – and what they each bring to the table, particularly Connery in his Oscar-winning performance. And we touch on the technical with Ennio Morricone's score, the fantastic production design and the noirish title design. It's a film that unfortunately didn't hold up for us this go-around, despite still being able to get enjoyment from it. It's worth the watch, particularly if you haven't seen it before, so check it out then tune in!
