This week on the podcast, Dane sits down with Sejal Thakkar, Chief Civility Officer, Chief Culture Officer, and keynote speaker. Today, Dane and Sejal explore how creating a culture of civility in the workplace is a crucial part of working well as a team, what microaggressions are and how they show up in the workplace, and her framework for correcting these behaviors through “calling someone in.” She shares how her framework encourages employees to share the responsibility and resolve issues collaboratively at the ground level, instead of bringing it up the chain to their supervisor or HR. Finally, she talks through how psychological safety at work can create a stronger, more effective team. This is a great conversation to combat the growing trend of incivility in the workplace.Key Takeaways:00:00 Introduction to the Future of Teamwork Podcast02:09 Sejal's Journey from Defense Attorney to Civility Advocate03:51 Understanding and Addressing Incivility10:27 The Role of Microaggressions in Workplace Incivility19:30 The Civility Action Plan (CAP) Framework24:49 Frustrations with Anti-Harassment Training25:30 Drawing Parallels with the Safety Industry26:32 Introducing the Civility Action Plan27:20 Importance of Alignment in Civility29:12 Promotion and Continuous Learning31:11 Implementing Psychological Safety32:28 Encouraging Collaborative Conflict Resolution42:23 The Role of AI in Promoting Civility44:15 Concluding Thoughts and Call to Action Psychological safety at work doesn't mean that everybody is nice to each other all the time. I also recently became the Chief Culture Officer for a venture studio called Nobody Studios. I got into this work because I saw a need for better education around workplace conflict and civility. I grew up in Chicago in the 80s as the only Indian family in an Italian neighborhood, and so I experienced a lot of racism and bullying. I decided early on that I wanted to be a lawyer so that I could help other people who were experiencing bias and discrimination. However, I ended up representing managers who were accused of hurting other people. Through this work, I learned a lot about unconscious bias and its impact on our lives. I decided to share my knowledge on the.In this episode, you will learn the following:1. The importance of bystander intervention training in addressing workplace conflict2. [00:01:24] - Doug Thompson is joined by TEDx speaker Sejal Thakkar for the latest episode of the Doug Thompson Podcast. The episode hasn't been published yet, but it's finally being recorded. It's the fourth or fifth time Doug and Sejal had to move things around because of illness or work.[00:02:00] - Sejal moved to the Bay Area in 2000. She's a full-time mother. She was a lawyer for a number of years. In 2017, she started her own company, Train Extra, which she provides workshops to companies all over the globe. Recently, she was hired as the chief culture officer at Nobody Studios in Southern California.[00:03:58] - Nobody Studios is hiring a chief culture officer and chief civility officer to improve workplace culture. The CEO. Nobody studios saw her work on Black Lives Matter and Colbert and offered her the position. She will work with the leadership team to create the culture strategy.[00:08:24] - In her Ted Talk, she talks about how to create a workplace where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Her focus is on diversity and how to help people navigate through differences in the workplace. She's done harassment training and DEI training. Her work is talking to individuals and helping them understand their rights and responsibilities.[00:11:11] - As an immigrant kid growing up in a suburb of Chicago. She was bullied and harassed. She was suspended from school and used his words to fight back. Her father told his family that she was going to be a lawyer. She wanted to challenge the status quo and attend law school.[00:13:40] - In her first TEDx Talk, she talks about the power of unconscious bias and how it can be overcome. She came up with an acronym, the HAT acronym, to help people understand their own biases. She also shares some science behind what unconscious bias is and why it's so important. The Platinum Rule is an acronym for thinking about what is it that this person would want? How do I want to treat this person based on what they want, not what I'm looking to do. Sejal was bullied and harassed by kids that were Italian when he was a child. Sejal uses an online tool called the Implicit Association Test to help people identify their unconscious biases. It took years to get you into this place, and you have to carve new neural pathways to think differently with this. It's not an overnight fix. There are studies and tools that help us go do these things. It takes a lot of work, but it's worth it.[00:23:40] - Next project is with Ovations, which is a company that's coming out of Nobody Studios'. Venture Studio. It's an online virtual talent platform. She wants to be able to go in for 15 minutes every month and build long-term relationships with event planners.[00:25:47] - In the panic. Doug helped talked Sejal off the edge of the cliff doing a Ted Talk, and then he sent the script back to her, and she totally redid it. He's glad that he sort of unstuck her a little bit. She had this huge panic.[00:26:24] - Sejal's son was in the audience when she gave a TEDx Talk. Sejal revamped her script to focus more on the impact of his story and less on the fluffiness of the previous version of the script. Sejal believes that if he can positively impact one person to get them to change or think differently, her job as a speaker is done.[00:30:04] - In her second TEDx talk, she talks about the power of exclusion and how people can move past it. In the first part of the talk, she used the acronym POWER. The P in Power is for pain, the W is willing and the E is for energy.Other episodes you'll enjoy:[Insert 3 past episodes with links] Connect with me:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedougthompson/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Doug-Thompson-Podcast-110928150634768YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz2qwXN-yIHHUiX4Y-e5mwQTwitter: https://twitter.com/thedougthompsonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thedougthompson/Sejal Thakkar is on a mission to educate and empower people to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Sejal Thakkar, founder and Chief Civility Officer of TrainXtra. As Sejal grew up in a suburb of Chicago, Sejal fought hatred and discrimination on a regular basis. She refused to allow ignorance, insensitivity, and the bullying conduct of others to impact her inner “ninja”. Armed with the knowledge she gained from these experiences, Sejal teaches that harassment will not stop on its own – it's up to all of us to be part of the fight to stop workplace harassment. We cannot be complacent bystanders and expect our workplace cultures to change by themselves. Sejal passionately transforms the workplace and education settings into places of civility by empowering others to be a part of the solution. Her goal is to empower the creation of a positive workspace. Conversations with Extraordinary People A monthly FB Live/podcast based on my book The Magical Guide to Bliss. Future of work podcaster Dan Smolen says that the time has come for healing an emotionally distressed workforce. Gallup's latest workforce study is out, and it indicates that workers across the globe are suffering. And Jim Clifton, the Chairman and CEO of Gallup, minces no words: “What if the next global crisis is a mental health pandemic? It is here now.” Gallup concludes that the global workforce is enduring a second pandemic. People who work suffer mental and emotional distress at alarming rates: Nearly half of North American workers (48 percent) worry. More than half of female workers (53 percent) express worry versus 43 percent of male workers, and; 57 percent of North American workers endure stress. Of these, 62 percent of female workers are affected (versus 52 percent of male workers). What is more, 80 percent of workers worldwide disengaged from the work that they do. In North America, the share of suffering workers is 66 percent. However, professional talent in the US and Canada expressed disengagement several years before the pandemic happened. Meantime, SHRM published workplace insights that are equally jarring. All told, SHRM estimates that 64 percent of the workforce suffers from disengagement. And that share of suffering aligns with Gallup's 66 percent finding. Stress and worry cause great suffering. And we know that people who mastered work from anywhere reject a return to commuting long hours and distances to the co-location. Healing an emotionally distressed workforce is in everyone's best interests. Work should not make people sick. And hiring managers must embrace new strategies and arrangements that help their team members thrive. Rowena Hennigan at RoRemote adds important perspective to this topic, here: Ways to integrate mental health awareness into remote working Also in this episode: Fostering a civil workplace is key to the future of work. Civility gets people closer to good mental health. As a self-described Chief Civility Officer, Sejal Thakkar applies her legal expertise and personal experience with discrimination to help civilize workplaces. Civility helps professionals of all backgrounds and cultures feel supported in their work. It also spares companies from lawsuits, low talent retention rates, and billions of dollars in lost revenue. Sejal Thakkar is on a mission to educate and empower others to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. She is a former employment law attorney, a TEDx speaker, and the founder and Chief Civility Officer at TrainXtra, where she helps her clients create positive, safe, and respectful workplaces through customized training and coaching. She also recently joined Nobody Studios as Chief Culture Officer. Barry O'Reilly welcomes her on this week's Unlearned Podcast to share her story of unlearning how to shift her own biases and beliefs. Check Your Biases It's difficult to acknowledge your biases because they often portray a vision of you that is the opposite of what you believe of yourself. Sejal had to check her own biases in order to do her job as an attorney, representing persons accused of discrimination and harassment. “I had to do a lot of my own inner work to recognize my own bias so that I can do my job because there's no way that I can represent people unless I checked my own biases,” she remarks. Our biases often stem from our experiences, and they don't make us bad people. The key is to slow down and recognize when we're letting our unconscious biases affect our decisions and use strategies to combat them. She has changed her language: she no longer refers to them as biases, but beliefs. She shares an online tool listeners can use to discover their unconscious beliefs. She also advises leaders to have an accountability partner who will tell them honestly if they're letting unconscious beliefs influence their decisions. Unlearning Preconceived Notions Practice active listening, Sejal advises, and you'll start picking up on your own preconceptions and judgments. Barry reminds listeners that we're all programmed to have automatic responses in some situations. However, we can reprogram our brains once we become aware of our negative hidden beliefs. He and Sejal discuss their own blind spots and the importance of being humble and willing to learn and grow. “I've spent my whole life up to this point learning, and now the rest of life is unlearning,” Sejal comments. It's about taking small steps in the right direction; eventually “everything else will start to roll”. “The ability to adapt is so powerful,” Barry agrees; “...just do small steps and learn your way through it.” Where Culture Starts “Your culture starts the moment you hire the first person,” Sejal tells her clients. Building a healthy, respectful, and diverse culture means maximizing the skills, talents, and contributions of every employee. You have to know what your employees want: ask them and listen to their feedback. “If you're too afraid to know about what problems are going on, how can you fix them?” she argues. Nurture an environment where people feel safe to speak up so that you can deal with problems before they become a lawsuit. Looking Ahead Sejal is excited about being part of Nobody Studios and helping to build the company culture from the ground up. “The key is the learning is never gonna stop,” she tells Barry, “so I'm excited about the fact that I get to learn about and challenge myself in ways that I never have.” Read full show notes at Barry O'Reilly.com Resources Sejal Thakkar on LinkedIn | Twitter Implicit Association Test

At the heart of civility is respect. Respect and dignity are essential for psychological safety, especially when others have diverse experiences and viewpoints. Civility is not about complacency or placating. It's not about denying or pushing away strong feelings that can emerge when conflict emerges. It's about temporarily suspending our alarm bells for a period of time so we can do the hard work of “climbing the empathy wall” to better understand the deep stories behind those we see as “the other.”Sejal girl.jpgIn this podcast, I interview Sejal Thakkar, an employment lawyer whose family immigrated from India.
