From surfboard to snowboard to board of directors, Quantum Loophole's CEO Josh Snowhorn has always been able to catch the next wave. Join this highly entertaining Nomad Futurist podcast to hear the story of a passionate industry leader, innovator and sports enthusiast who finds exciting synergies that keep him at the forefront of the critical infrastructure industry. Snowhorn grew up as a scion of the successful Neiman Marcus family and the happy child of highly educated parents who lived a hippie lifestyle. Nevertheless, Snowhorn was the black sheep of the family, eschewing Harvard for his passions for surfing and snowboarding which he subsidized by photographing tourists. Through a surfing contact he got involved in doing retrofits for telecom hotels which in turn gave him enough experience to land a job at Terremark, a Miami based real estate company that was involved in constructing data centers during the early dotcom era. “I recognized very quickly that Terremark was going to be something magical. I had this amazing opportunity to really make something of myself and I knew that I had it in my DNA to achieve things.” Snowhorn, who considers himself to be a proud nerd, soon became an expert in interconnection and peering and was responsible for extraordinary growth at the company. He also founded the Global Peering Forum. “I was responsible for peering and interconnection and cross connects and the Global Peering Forum and all that at the same time, driving massive transactional business to the company. I approached it from a sense of friendship and camaraderie in the industry. The people I sold to were really my friends and they trusted me.” After eleven years at Terremark, Snowhorn went on to work for CyrusOne where he grew revenue 23% year-on-year. Snowhorn's latest enterprise, Quantum Loophole, is focused on addressing the scalability, connectivity, and cost-efficiency challenges of today's large-scale deployments. “I looked at the elements that we needed in our industry; land, energy, water, and fiber. Those are essentials… that ecosystem just needs to be supported with mass scale facilities. That's what we're hoping to do…find the phase one perfect location, and then scale that out around the country and become a wholesaler to the wholesalers.” Quantum Loophole is currently developing a first-of-its kind 2,100-acre data center campus in Frederick, Maryland that supports Northern Virginia's data center alley. Snowhorn is a committed futurist. He has an aversion to thinking inside the box and is constantly encouraging his team: “I want you to forget about what you did in the past. That doesn't mean a thing. I want you to think about the future.…if we shape our business that way, we're going to be ahead of everybody.” Snowhorn's enthusiasm and generosity of spirit have been key to his success in sales and business development, and with regards to the next generation, he is clearly committed to paying it forward. “When I meet the kids coming into our industry who don't go to college, a lot of them dropped out of high school, and I watch how they're trying to succeed in the networking industry, I can't wait to give them an opportunity.” Josh Snowhorn is Founder & CEO of Quantum Loophole, Inc. which offers a rapid platform delivery for land, power, connectivity, and scale to support the needs of hyperscalers, enterprises and colocation providers. Snowhorn values approachability, accessibility, collaboration, innovation, and growth. These qualities guided Snowhorn's leadership in the interconnection industry over the last 20 years and building over $10B of value along the way. He has pretty much seen and done it all through key founding and executive positions at Terremark, Verizon (NYSE: VZ), Cincinnati Bell, and CyrusOne (Nasdaq: CONE). Josh founded the Global Peering Forum, the annual meeting for the Internet...

In this episode, we are joined by Dave “Laundromat Millionaire” Menz sharing how his humble beginnings did not stop him from being successful as we discuss the topic from Poverty to Prospering. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Hear how Dave Menz went from selling candy in school to a millionaire. Discover how Dave was able to make his business stand out and grow. Learn how sacrifice can pay off in business. Episode Highlights Who Is Dave Menz Dave shares that his family had very humble beginnings, which caused him to face several struggles growing up. He also shared that as a child in order to purchase snacks or treats, he and his siblings had to learn to be resourceful. He also shared that from a tender age in life, he developed an entrepreneurial spirit that has led him to where he is today. How Did Dave Begin? Dave shares that, growing up, he learned to survive on the bare minimum. That propelled him to start little business ventures such as mowing lawns and re-selling candy in school. He shared that as a youngster, he was stubborn and believed that he too could be successful and achieve the freedom and independence that came with entrepreneurship. He says that he was not encouraged to pursue entrepreneurship by his family but that didn't stop him from going after his goal. After having a regular 9-5 job for 13 years, learning valuable skills for business, and climbing the corporate ladder, Dave had an epiphany. He realized that he still wanted to be an entrepreneur and started working towards having his own business. The Business After making cutbacks in his personal and family life, Dave bought a laundromat, and through thorough research and commitment, he was able to learn the Laundromat business. He also shares that in his initial introduction he learned that people within the industry did not respect the laundromat business and its owners. Dave decided that he had to operate differently than other persons in the laundromat industry to make and be the change he wanted to see. Dave shared that he spent a lot of time and money reinvesting in his business and its operations. He has been able to expand and turn it into a million-dollar business. Dave's difference in approach to the laundromat business has opened many doors for him financially. He has since published a book and offers coaching to other persons in the industry so that they too can be successful in their business. Valuable Advice Dave says some of the most valuable lessons he has learned are that you should not allow other people to limit you, you should not do anything illegal or unethical and that delayed gratification will bring success. 3 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “If you want something in life you better go figure out a way to earn it.” “There are no limitations on what I can accomplish.” “Don't let others tell you what you can and can't do; don't let others put limitations on you.” About Dave Menz Dave grew up in poverty and overcame superhero-like obstacles. His story, revealed in his debut book, Laundromat Millionaire – The Grit to Elevate an Industry' is a life and a business journey that doesn't stop at rags to riches. It begins with a stubborn and obsessive mission to be a business owner with a tenacious and genuine purpose to help others to do the same. Dave teaches the principles of relentless studying of the greats to be great and knowing that even if an industry – like laundry – isn't sexy, you can make it so. His initial foray into business ownership was a side hustle alongside his corporate gig with Cincinnati Bell. He found his first business on Craigslist. Once he owned it, he overhauled it from struggling, losing money and outdated, to one that was a valuable proposition to serve as a vital community asset.

How do you revitalize a declining municipality? Katie Meyer, Executive Director of Renaissance Covington, is on the front lines of this challenge in Covington, Kentucky. Her city’s downtown shares a similar story to many others. An incredible historic infrastructure still stands, albeit empty. Over the years, their downtown has lost a lot of loss in small business and population, but she’s working hard to preserve it before it’s too late. Her approach of choice? Smart city initiatives. That’s where our second guest comes in. Mike Grogan, Director of Mobile Strategy and Product Marketing at Cincinnati Bell, has partnered with RC to not only connect the downtown area with wifi, but collect data insights to improve strategy. The biggest challenge Katie used to face with the revitalization efforts was proving the return on investment. Answering questions like, how many people did it attract or how did it influence business growth in the district? The new data would helped them clearly answer those questions and more.

Then transportation reporter Hannah Sparling joins to talk about the embattled streetcar in light of discouraging new numbers and Cincinnati Bell threatening to pull their name off the trains.

You can try not to make your podcast episodes about Pokemon Go right now... but your podcast is DEFINITELY going to end up being about Pokemon Go. So why resist? Does it matter that Steph hasn't played it yet? No! Does it matter that Josh is only Level 10? No. Does it matter that she watched the wrong episode and was ready to talk about the mystery of the death of Asa Phelps over the fact that Steamed Hams is more of an Albany expression? No! When we come back after long breaks we come back strong and nothing matters except making sure the world knows just how bad a service provider Cincinnati Bell is. You hear that Cincinnati Bell? You're on our Poo Poo Platter of the Week!
