Emotions are foundational in our overall well-being. They shape our relationships, affect our careers, and influence countless other areas where our clients seek support. Yet, for many of us and our clients, sometimes emotions can feel vague or ambiguous. Why? We were never taught to clearly identify our emotions and still may not have the language to articulate them. Understanding and accurately labeling the feelings we experience is crucial for mental health. If most people are unable to do this, that means we've got some work to do. But here's the great news: Emotional capacity and intelligence are measurable and learnable–we can build them just like we build muscles. This is the essential skill we'll focus on in today's podcast episode. The truth is, we are all going to face setbacks. But your emotional world–your skills, awareness, and connectedness surrounding your emotions–is one of the most vital components of your stability. To help you understand how significant our emotions are, I'll share insights from the largest study on emotional intelligence and explore the current "emotional recession" impacting us and our clients. I'll also take you through a relevant analogy to help you understand how emotions act as stabilizers and how to expand our emotional capacity—practically and powerfully. When we develop our knowledge around the power and importance of emotions–and understand what it means to truly connect with them–we can expand our capacity to navigate life. Building your emotional intelligence muscles as a coach not only allows you to show up powerfully for your clients and cultivate lasting change in their lives, but it also means you are increasing their awareness of the muscles that they need to strengthen. When we do this work—individually and collectively—we have more meaningful life experiences filled with purpose, gratitude, connection, and empathy. I can't wait to show you how this is possible in today's episode. What you'll learn:Key summary points from the State of the Heart 2024 report on emotional intelligenceThe definition of “emotional recession” and how one is currently affecting all of usWhy many people lack the awareness to understand and label their emotions accuratelyA personal story that highlights the importance of emotional skills as a stabilization toolWhat it really means to be with our emotions and how skilled coaches guide clients through this processRead the full show notes here.Connect with Molly ClaireMolly's Website: MollyClaire.ComMaster Coach Training 2026 Application Open Have a question or thoughts about the podcast? 188. Moving Clients Through Deep Emotional Resistance with Master Coach Sondra Sperry

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 35:00

Some of the most impactful moments in coaching occur when a client bumps up against resistance. Have you noticed this too?!... It can often seem like more of a barrier when our clients experience emotional resistance. However, highly skilled coaches (like my Master Coach client Sondra who you'll hear from in this week's podcast) know that resistance is actually a sign that transformation is near. As Master-level coaches, we can use this as a tool to help our clients move forward in the most powerful way. When we recognize it with curiosity and compassion, resistance becomes a powerful ally in the healing process. Not only is understanding emotional resistance important for our clients, but it's essential for us as coaches as well. In order to lead with great service and cultivate lasting change in our clients, we need to overcome the barrier of self-judgment and truly be open to a holistic approach to coaching–the importance of which becomes so much more clear when we have experienced it ourselves. In this blog (and this week's podcast episode), we'll explore how emotional resistance offers valuable insight, and how creating a safe, welcoming space allows clients to move through it with confidence and clarity. When we can master the art of navigating deep resistance we create client breakthroughs that make an impact on their lives.Effective emotional work begins with you as a coachFrom creating an effective plan of action to offering tools clients can use in daily life, there is one thing that is crucial for growth: a holistic view that not only uses mindset, but the nervous system and emotions as well. All three are essential, but here we'll focus on the deep emotional work that so many clients need in order to thrive. When we support clients in their emotional journey, one of the most powerful things we can do is meet them exactly where they are. As most highly skilled coaches already know, this isn't about changing their emotions–that attitude will most likely be met with more resistance. We must show up for our clients with acceptance so they can recognize they are in a safe place to truly feel their emotions.Often clients are conflicted and struggling with judgment of themselves when they come to us. When you, as their coach, demonstrate genuine acceptance—free from expectations or opinions about how they “should” be—they begin to trust that it's okay to show up exactly as they are. They can then let go of some of their self-judgment and start recognizing the deep work that needs to happen.Creating a safe, non-judgmental space is crucial to helping our clients move through emotional resistance. But in order to do this, we have to build that capacity within ourselves first. In Master Coach training, there are many skills and concepts that we spend time on to help us be better coaches: we learn about the nervous system, we work on tapping, and we're always talking about how we use cognitive coaching language to create safety and remove judgment. Developing these skills through knowledge is an amazing way to help your clients, but so much of the compassion we have for them comes from having done our own emotional work. How skilled coaches build trust in themselvesOne of the skills we cultivate in Master Coach training–and that I think is imperative for every human being, especially coaches–is to build the self-trust required to...

    187. Navigating Emotions: A Guide for Moms Raising Boys with Heidi Allsop

When I first began my own motherhood journey, surviving each day seemed to be the goal. Can you relate? As women, the degree to which we can feel spread thin and overwhelmed by the emotional overload of becoming a mom can seem unbearable. And yet, I've come to learn that while “survival” mode can serve us from time to time, ultimately leaning into thriving is not only possible, but an incredible opportunity to expand our ability to impact our kids. I love supporting women in my work and have a special place in my heart for motherhood. This began early in my career when I wrote, The Happy Mom Mindset, and today I'm excited to share about a conversation I had with one of my very own Master Coach training clients, Heidi Allsop, on her podcast Raising Boys, Building Men. Heidi is a mom of five boys, and her podcast provides incredible insight into the challenges (and joys) of parenting, specifically when it comes to raising boys. I'm thrilled to rebroadcast this podcast episode and share some of the tools we discussed in this blog. Personally, I'm a mom to three amazing kids–two young adult boys and a teenage girl. Not only have I coached many women through their parenting challenges, but I have experienced my own firsthand. I know what it's like to navigate boys and their teenage years and all the emotions that come with it. Because of my holistic approach to coaching, I also know how vital understanding emotions is–in general for all of us, but especially when it comes to being there for our kids. So today, we are diving into all things emotions and teenage boys–a subject that touches many moms in a unique way. Every mom experiences her teenage son differently, so when we talk about teenage boys and their emotions, this can mean a few different things. Sometimes, it's big, loud emotions that present themselves in angry outbursts–an easy emotion for teenage boys to express. On the opposite end of the spectrum are boys with a lot of emotions coming up, but they stay silent and we don't know what they're thinking. The variety and unpredictability of emotions can make navigating raising boys–or any child–as a mom so difficult. So what do we do? How do we help them learn and navigate those emotions so they can keep developing through the years and become great people? After reading this blog, you'll take away strategies to help you.Whether you're a mom or not–and whether you have boys or not– this conversation will give you incredible insights into our emotional world as human beings–something that every coach needs to be aware of.Why emotional regulation is essential for momsAs moms, we often have the idea that we must gauge the emotions of the people around us: Where are we today? Are we up? Are we down? We believe there's a certain thing that we should do depending on what mood our kids are in. We end up focusing so much on trying to be a detective about something happening outside of us, and it's not a useful way to direct our time and energy–it's anxiety-producing, and it's not the answer or the solution. A better question to ask ourselves is, where am I today? When you wake up in the morning, take the time to say, what's my temperature? How am I doing? It is essential to pay attention to how we feel and ensure we're attending to our needs. Creating practices for better emotional regulation for ourselves is the foundation we need to be there for our kids no matter what mood they're in.

    186. Why a Relationship-Based Coaching Business is the Key to Long-Term Success with Caryn Gillen

Today, we're diving deep into something I have discussed many times from a slightly different perspective. Almost every coach faces challenges when we realize that in addition to doing the work we love, we also have to run a business. The idea and practice of having a coaching business can be overwhelming, but it certainly doesn't have to be. If you want to build a coaching business that reflects your values—where deep relationships, service, and long-term sustainability are front and center—this blog is for you. It's so common to hear about the goals and strategies of other business owners and coaches and think you need to do everything they are doing. BUT, that's not true. Not even close. Everyone has different values, different gifts, and different desires. The key to the real success you are craving, is a unique business that comes out of your natural abilities and human connection. I interviewed Caryn Gillen on the podcast - she is a powerhouse. Caryn helps coaches create businesses they “don't have to recover from.” Wow, if that's not a statement, I don't know what is. She shows coaches that their businesses can work for who they are as a person and the life that they have. Your coaching business can serve your clients, you, your family, and the community you live in–and that's what you'll hear about in this blog.Caryn and I are aligned in our mission in this regard. In fact, this is exactly what called me to reach out to her for an interview. We both believe that a business built with authenticity is one that puts our clients' best interests at the forefront of what we do. I can't wait for you to read more about this here. You'll realize that you're not just building any business, you are building your business–and there are so many ways to help you make your business work for you so you can do what you love without the overwhelm. Why your coaching skills are also your sales skillsI want to highlight one beneficial idea for us to consider as coaches building our business. There are activities in our business that are quick-win activities, and then there are activities that are more for long-term growth. There's not an exact line that is differentiated, but one example is the goal of growing your email list–that will promote long-term growth. But if you're focusing all your energy on growing your list, that will probably not bring in a new client immediately. The connections you make and the discussions you engage in will be the key activities that attract your clients. When it comes to these meaningful relationships, I like to remind my Master Coaches that they are people who want to help and make a difference. We don't become coaches because we are simply “looking for a way to make money.” We begin because we love coaching and connecting with people. Since this is our focus, it's easy to think that we're just not good at sales or marketing. But caring about people–genuinely caring about them–is selling. You can build a consistent and sustainable coaching businessCaryn has been in business and been a business coach for many years. She has excellent insight into some of the best things she did when first starting and some shifts she made in order to create more sustainability in her coaching business. When Caryn became a coach 15 years ago, she charged $20 a session. She is still in touch with one of her clients who paid that price, and he has referred people to her who have paid full price now. This story emphasizes the importance of a relationship-based coaching business. Initially, Caryn was willing to say yes to anything that got her working with clients, getting a dollar through the door, and getting her...

It is so common for high-achieving women to push through despite feeling drained. We have seen this in our clients and have most likely experienced it ourselves in our careers as coaches. When high achievers feel exhausted, it's easy to think that another cup of coffee is all they need to keep going. But we know that is not the case at all, and they might actually be on the verge of burnout. We hear about burnout a lot--it's become somewhat of a buzzword in our culture. Today, we discuss what this means specifically and how it affects high-achieving women like ourselves and our clients.Burnout can be a significant issue! As someone who is ambitious and high-achieving, I understand what it's like not to see it coming. Women are used to taking on so much that we keep going without realizing the cost: their health, relationships, and long-term career success. When women ignore burnout, they often end up in survival mode–operating on autopilot, disconnected from their passion, and resenting the very work they once loved. This cycle continues because high achievers don't want to feel weak by slowing down. However, we can break this cycle–for us and our clients.Midore Takada is a trauma-informed, master-certified life coach who specializes in helping career-driven women in midlife who feel stuck, overwhelmed, and burned out, including those navigating professional exam prep while balancing demanding careers and personal responsibilities. In this episode, she offers great insights and helpful tools to understand the signs of burnout and how we can use a holistic perspective to support our clients through it.What does burnout in high-achieving women look like? For ambitious, career-driven women, burnout doesn't always look like total collapse–that's why it can be so hard to identify. When high-achieving women burn out, it is often disguised as over-functioning–they still show up, deliver results, and handle it all, but internally, they are running on fumes. As women, we can be really good at over-functioning. It's unhealthy for us, but we often do it without even realizing it. We have thoughts like, I have to do this. I have to take care of everything. I'm supposed to hold things together. We don't realize when we've crossed over into that place, which is when resentment can creep in. Instead of slowing down when this happens, women push harder and dismiss the exhaustion as just needing to manage their time better. But deep down, they start feeling disconnected from their work and become irritable, unmotivated, and emotionally drained–even if they are still achieving on the surface. The subtle signs of burnout in high-achieving womenOften, when high-achieving women experience burnout, it can feel like it came on very suddenly. There are several signs to watch for to identify burnout before you–or your client–have reached total exhaustion. Maybe you're feeling off but can't point out why. Or the work that you were once really excited about now feels draining. You have brain fog, are forgetful, and make mistakes you usually don't make. Resentment creeps in, and even small tasks feel like a burden. You overcommit without thinking–saying yes automatically, even when you're overwhelmed and emotionally numb. You get through the day instead of actually feeling present. For high-achieving women, burnout doesn't scream, I can't do this anymore, but instead, it whispers, why doesn't this feel as fulfilling as it used to? When women can recognize these signs, there are shifts they can make with the help of a coach to stop them from hitting that total burnout. Skilled coaches advocate for a high level of self-care and wellness that will help prevent the crash before it happens. Helping them shift the way they engage in the world and what they expect of themselves...

Today, we're talking about something so many of our clients struggle with: weight loss. Truly, this goes beyond losing weight–it's about guiding our clients towards figuring out how they can feel good in their bodies. How do we do this? By using a holistic approach to weight loss. When our clients focus on counting calories and following trending diets, the journey to better physical health often stays rooted in mindset. Skilled coaches know that thought work can be a great entry point, but if we only focus on the mind, we miss a huge piece of successfully helping our clients. When we can help our clients connect to their bodies and emotions, it reduces stress and overwhelm so they can make choices about what they eat instead of staying dysregulated and feeling out of control. I recently got to talk with Dr. Priyanka Venugopal, the master of Burn Stress, Lose Weight and an OB-GYN physician turned life coach. Her mission to help women feel better from head to toe–with science-based information, not fads and gimmicks–helped inspire this blog, and I can't wait for you to hear her wisdom. This blog and podcast episode center primarily around helping your clients who have a weight loss goal, but it will provide helpful strategies that will allow you to serve any of your clients better. We discuss building awareness, regulating the nervous system, and self-connections–ideas every single coach needs to have tools for in order to help our clients make the transformation they seek.Priyanka is passionate about helping women and supporting moms. Most coaches are, right? Having these roles is an amazing thing, but it can be stressful–that's why our clients come to us. They can have all the information about what would help them feel better, but it's not always easy to know what you truly need to make it happen without the help of a coach. Today, we're diving into the best strategies to help your clients connect their brains to their bodies so they can build awareness and follow through on what they need to feel good.Help your clients transform using a holistic approach to weight lossSo many people hear stories about incredible weight loss transformations, but it's easy to feel disconnected if that is a journey they have not been on yet. As coaches, we know that lasting change is possible for anyone. So how do we remove this block that our clients have and help them finally feel good in their own bodies and minds?Priyanka talked about how, when she first started receiving coaching, the idea that our thoughts create our feelings was so profound for her. Many of us have this same experience–it's a simple concept, but we don't have the awareness of it yet. Why a holistic approach to weight loss is essentialOur thoughts genuinely do influence our feelings, which is one of the many reasons why a holistic approach to weight loss (and coaching in general) is so important. As coaches, we need to look at our clients' mindsets, but it is equally important to understand where we need to address emotions that are rising in the body. This practice will help them separate their internal experience from what is happening on the outside. That separation is powerful as I help my clients attend to the imprints on their nervous systems or emotions. We could talk about this every week with our clients and ourselves, and it would be a lightbulb moment every time. It's our job to help them see that their circumstance does not have power over them so we can attend to what's going on in their mind. How to help your clients

As a coach, do you realize often enough just how valuable your work is?! In an AI-centric world where it appears that computers can solve everything, it can be easy to forget the power of human connection. When you as a coach can be present with your client, hearing them, empowering them, and guiding them to enhance their life… wow. That cannot be replaced. In this episode, we're going to explore why coaching for moms specifically is so important. Moms are handed a pretty big job right away- keeping a small human being alive! And yet, that is only the beginning. The emotional care and support that is needed to help kids develop in the best possible way is a task that requires care, conscious decisions, and plenty of support surrounding us. Something few moms know (and even few coaches understand) is that children rely on their caregivers to help them co-regulate. As a mom, your own level of emotional stability and wellness has a direct impact on your kids. (Now listen, no pressure or worry, okay?! We are all human. We are a work in progress). Having said this, too many moms are overwhelmed, exhausted and reactive. I truly believe that every mom should have a coach. Guidance and help from the right coach means more moms can learn to feel more in control of their own emotions and truly give their kids what they need. Let's face it, parenting is hard. Every single kid is different, and there is no manual to follow. That's why I'm thrilled to have one of my Master Certified Coaches Meg Kuhnle share the work she does using a holistic approach to help moms connect to themselves so they can show up better as parents. Even women (and men) who are not moms will have important takeaways. There is so much good here and everyone will be able to learn something to help you become a more highly skilled coach and better serve your clients who are parents or not. With so many moms being in a “self-sacrificing” mindset, most would think they “can't justify” a personal coach until later in life. This could not be more backwards (and yet I too have fallen prey to this type of thinking). Let's talk about why every mom needs a coach now. Starting and continuing personal growth as a woman raising kids means avoiding some of the worst mom traps and ultimately being the best possible parent. We're going to go through strategies for how to cultivate energy and understand yourself more so that even during the tough moments where emotions are high, you can still be that person that you're proud of at the end of the day–and help your clients do the same.Regulate your nervous system for a calmer homeHighly skilled coaches know how important a holistic approach is for our clients, and it's no different when we're coaching for moms. As a coach, you know the work you do is so impactful. And yet, sometimes it can be overwhelming to tackle the financial side, making it difficult for us to take our business seriously. Coaches understand emotions and people–that's where we feel comfortable and why we gravitate toward this work. I've seen time and again with thousands of coaches that the business aspect can feel like a foreign language. If it doesn't come naturally to you, you're not alone! And you're in the right place. Yes, you are a coach. And you are a business owner as well. Understanding your business and giving it your attention is essential to your success as a coach. If you're constantly worried about your finances and your business is disorganized, that affects how you show up for your clients. Running a business can feel scary and you may even feel some resistance to the idea, but trust me when I say that more certainty in this area is much closer than you think. The first step is just to commit that you will get the clarity you need in this area. The lack of business confidence is common for new coaches, but those who are further along are not exempt from this either. I've had my business for 10 years and I still have to clean up certain pieces now and then. It's okay that it's not perfect. Messy is okay too; as long as we continue to work on cleaning up and gaining clarity every step along the way. In this blog and podcast episode, you'll get direction in this area so you can be a better coach and a successful business owner.Mark J. Kohler is a CPA, an attorney, a small business expert, a bestselling author, and a podcaster with millions of downloads. Mark is experienced with bringing coaching into his business. He has hired life coaches for key people in his organization because he knows the significant impact of being more in tune with yourself. When business and coaching go hand-in-hand, the effect can be so powerful. Not only can your coaching help improve someone's business (even if you are not specifically a business coach) but your coaching will improve when you can get organized and fully accept your identity as a business owner. In this episode, we're going to go through all the steps to make this happen for you in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming–it just starts with taking the first step forward. When you can give attention to your business, it will free you up to serve your clients and accept the opportunities that are going to make you a more effective, highly skilled coach. How your business will make you a better coachWe're going to focus on five steps that will help you take action in your business. When you take the right kind of action–not actions inspired by avoidance–you are going to build your confidence as a business owner. Being both a business owner and a coach is such a powerful thing. Your reality is going to change when you can feel this empowerment instead of the overwhelm. If you have an underlying, nagging anxiety about your business, this is going to affect your ability to be present for your clients. I want you to feel like being a business owner is a superpower to help you be a better life coach. When you can make money doing what you love and are passionate about, then you can help more people and you can go into your coaching calls more confident and less stressed about the financial and logistical aspects. It's okay to feel overwhelmed–we all are sometimes. But I want you to know that the answers are there for you. You don't have to know everything right now, all you need to do

Safety is essential to healing, but you may wonder… What does that even mean? (and what in the world does that have to do with effective coaching?…)After all, we are usually physically safe during coaching, right? However, cultivating emotional safety is a foundational piece of being a highly skilled and effective coach.Safety provides a container for emotional connection and creativity to happen. This includes problem-solving creativity. When we create this space as a coach, transformational work will happen. This is how we serve our clients to their full potential. The absence of safety in coaching means a client who is stuck, spinning, rigid, frustrated and ineffective. You may not have recognized this as the cause, but trust me - these are indications that your client is not feeling safe internally. The good news is - you can begin to cultivate safety and teach them how to do the same for themselves. My conversation with Leah Davidson in this episode will help you understand the importance of coaching through the lens of emotional needs and the nervous system. That approach is what will help you create the safety needed to make coaching more effective for your clients. We'll dive deep into understanding certain pieces of the nervous system and how it affects our and our client's ability to feel safe–so you can become a more effective coach in everything you do.The ripple effect of trust and safety in coachingAs any kind of practitioner, first and foremost you have to have a level of trust and safety within the relationship with your client for anything to work. That's why cultivating trust and safety is such an important starting point in the Master Coach Training program. We need environments where our nervous system senses safety in order to create better relationships, better connections, and better growth. At the core, it comes down to knowing ourselves better and understanding our nervous system. That's when we can truly create safety within. Building a deeper understanding of the nervous systemOur nervous system tells us whether we are safe or in danger. That distinction in our body is based on past experiences, life, personality, and other factors. This is why it is so crucial that not only do you understand your own nervous system, but you help your clients understand their nervous system. The lens through which we view the world affects everything. As a coach, you could have every safety cue out there and say all the right things. But if a client is bringing the lens of danger, they are going to be looking around for that danger. It's important to know that our nervous system is shaped by thousands and thousands of experiences–and it's not always accurate. But it is always a factor in our and our client's ability to feel safe.We want to create safety in our coaching sessions to the degree that we can so our clients have the opportunity to understand how to create safety for themselves. That will play out in the areas that they're trying to change in their lives and help create a transformation.Understanding the nervous system will help you do your best workThere are so many opportunities to dive deeper into this. 180. Creating Emotional Resilience as a Coach

Emotional resilience is often misunderstood, mischaracterized, and sadly, overlooked far too often. Understanding emotional resilience (and how to cultivate it in ourselves and others) is a vital skill for coaches. Not only does this help us guide our clients through overcoming challenges, but our ability to be resilient plays a huge role in running our own businesses, managing the inevitable ups and downs that come, and even our very abilities to coach our clients well. In this episode, my conversation with Melanie Fay highlights just how important resilience is, including the implications for you personally and professionally. It's so important in fact, that it is a core element of the Master Coach Training program. During the course of the year-long program, Master Coaches-in-training develop skills, capacity, and the habits of practices that cultivate emotional resilience long term. It's one of my absolute favorite outcomes of the program. In truth, resilience allows us to show up consistently and steadily for our clients. What most people don't talk about is how much the nervous system impacts our resilience (and that of our clients too). Knowing this, and truly understanding it, means solutions for you as a coach. There are many tools to help bring the nervous system into balance. And while resilience is often associated with “toughness” or “bouncing back,” it goes far beyond that. Resilience is deeply tied to self-connection. When we can connect to ourselves enough to be with the circumstances in our lives, developing resilience becomes easier for us and for our clients.Defining resilience and its role in coachingCultivating emotional resilience–in ourselves and in our clients–is so impactful. In order to fully understand its importance, first let's clarify what resilience truly means. In the podcast episode, we talk about two key interpretations:The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. These are both valid perspectives on resilience that speak to two very different places within ourselves. There is no single path to resilience—the most important aspect is helping clients find their own way to cultivate and expand upon it.The first definition, “The capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties,” heavily relates to the nervous system. When we work with our nervous system–our embodied response to outside stimuli–we can stay more level and present. That is a crucial form of resilience. Create space for your clients to be who they areThe second definition of resilience, “the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape,” highlights another essential aspect of coaching. When we create space for our clients to process pain, emotions, and challenges, we give them the ability to get back into alignment with their true selves.Resilience is not about clinging to difficult emotions or denying them; it is about allowing thoughts and feelings to surface without identifying too closely with them. The more distance they have from the circumstances in their lives, the better able we–as highly skilled coaches–are able to create a space of observation and acceptance where the client can see what they need. This allows them to experience the greater clarity and wisdom that will help them bounce back.Self-connection is the foundation of resilienceSelf-connection is a core principle of Master Coach Training. As coaches, our central goal is to help our clients—this is the work we love, and to go even further, it's who we are as people. There are a few key things you can do as a highly skilled coach to truly prioritize your clients, and they are all connected to the holistic approach to coaching. In this episode, Brain Berneman offers great insight into understanding the integration of the work we do and the holistic nature of coaching. We talked in-depth about what that means—for you and your clients--and how to figure out what skills you need to be able to really help the people you work with so you don't miss the bigger picture of them as a whole person. The holistic approach to coaching accounts for the whole personMany clients seek coaching to improve one specific area of their life–whether it's business, relationships, or personal development. However, often what they seek improvement with externally is connected to deeper internal aspects. Mental, emotional, and physical factors all play a role in shaping our experiences, and true progress comes when these elements are integrated. Skilled coaches can use one of these areas as an entry point, and then go deeper into a client's past experiences or nervous system responses to account for what is going on with the whole person. We need to offer this holistic perspective in order to guide those that we are supporting.A holistic view creates the best environment for your clientCreating a safe and inviting environment for our clients is something that highly skilled coaches know is essential to growth. This holistic approach is what truly leads our clients to feel cared for and know that we have their best interests at heart. Embrace and practice holistic and integrative coachingCoaching is not just about surface-level strategies—it's about integrating all aspects of life to bring lasting change. By embracing a holistic approach, expanding knowledge, collaborating with other professionals, and continuously working on personal growth, coaches can provide the highest level of support for our clients. Our clients need a skilled coach who looks beyond the obvious and is willing to explore the full picture of what's holding them back. So keep learning, stay open to collaboration, and walk the path yourself so you can guide others more effectively. Every coach knows how important mindset is for cultivating change–but great coaches have the ability to expand beyond thought work. So what truly sets highly skilled coaches apart? An integrative approach that combines mindset, emotions, and the nervous system into an integrative approach that meets clients where they are. Many coaches start with thought work because it's powerful and effective. But on its own, it has limits. When clients struggle to change their thoughts, it's often because deeper emotional or nervous system patterns need attention first. In this conversation with Crystal Hansen, you'll hear how developing the skills to have this holistic approach not only improves client results—it strengthens your business by making you a more adaptable coach. After you listen to the episode, don't forget to sign up for my FREE live webinar on March 10th at noon CT! We'll go even deeper into mindset and developing a holistic perspective. The power and limits of mindset workMindset work has so many benefits–it's often the quickest path for your clients to gain awareness, take ownership, and recognize areas where a shift is needed. When your client has the understanding that they can change their mindset, they realize the control they have over their life and circumstances. This power can feel so good! But thought work is not the answer to everything–it's important to be aware of the issues this can bring up as well. If clients believe every problem can be solved by changing their thoughts, they may start blaming themselves when it doesn't work. The truth is that not every thought is controllable. The nervous system plays a major role in how we respond to situations, often outside of conscious awareness. And when a deeper emotion is influencing our thoughts, that's something we need to process–not “fix” or change. It's essential to learn how to recognize when emotional processing should take priority. Highly skilled coaches who understand both can guide clients toward meaningful, lasting change.A holistic approach sets great coaches–and their businesses–apart from the restSkilled coaches need this broader understanding of the tools they can use to truly do their service justice. None of these strategies–mindset, emotional processing, or nervous system work–are better than another. What works for one client may not work for another. Lasting change comes from knowing how to combine them to serve each individual client. A holistic approach will allow you to personalize the work you do to help them move forward in their lives–this is what will set you apart as a great coach, and help your business continue to grow. “Money” is a loaded word (and a loaded topic) for most people in one way or another. For highly skilled coaches, it can feel tricky to balance doing the work you love with achieving financial goals. This is why you often leap to action–making new offers, changing your messaging, or increasing your marketing. In reality, the path to making money is much more holistic–and it starts understanding what's in your subconscious when it comes to money.Emily June Wilcox wrote Wounds to Wealth to share her money-healing methodology and help women understand how their limiting beliefs about money are caused by deep wounds. Making more money has to start from within–if you focus your energy outward before doing the internal work, you'll get stuck in a cycle that will not foster the growth you want. Emily shares stories and strategies to help you understand the concept and impact of money wounds and set you on a journey of healing that will make your money dreams a reality. What are the different types of money wounds? Emily defines six money wounds in her book:The money shame wound. You don't feel worthy of wealth. The evil money wound. You feel that being rich is bad or wrong. The hard money wound. Money just feels hard for you!The money trust wound. You don't trust yourself when it comes to managing money. The safe money wound. You need a financial cushion to feel secure. The disappearing money wound. You feel like money is going to abandon you–here one day, gone the next. You can take the quiz to find your most prominent wound, though most people have three or four that are varying degrees of strength. How limiting beliefs about money impact coaches As a coach, your specific struggle with money will be unique, depending on what your “wound” is. This is why changing “money mindset” is not as straightforward as you might think. Two coaches could be at the exact same skill level, but one is comfortable charging much more, much sooner. Why does this come easily for some but not others? It has to do with your story and expectations around money. In the Master Coach Training program, we dive deep into certain questions to provide insight into why you aren't making the money you want: How comfortable are you making an offer? How comfortable are you charging? How comfortable are you accepting money? When you're not comfortable with those things, it's easier to focus on trying to fix all the details of your business and making adjustments. But your relationship with money is the most foundational piece. Navigating change is the only constant in life! Yet, as human beings with a human brain… we often resist. It doesn't have to be this way. In fact, with the right coach (who understands about how the brain and body work), we can move toward change in a powerful way. Often when women hit midlife, their world can slow down a bit. The biggest change we're faced with is the question of “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?”In this episode, Master midlife coach, Jackie Sawinson, offers her insights here on what midlife means for women and how to prepare to navigate the changes and unknowns we face during that time. Whether you're in midlife, you feel you're past it, or you feel you're not yet there, you'll love Jackie tips and ideas for enriching your life and your coaching practice. Why is it so hard to face change?Change is inevitable and essential for growth, but it can still be so difficult to go through. Our brains love patterns. The way we think, feel, and react are patterns that are ingrained in us. Because of this, when we start to think that we might need to change, there's resistance. It's normal to resist change mentally, physically, and emotionally because the disruption of routines and habits comes with the fear of who we are without them. The support of a coach makes a difference in midlifeWhen you are navigating both mental and physical changes in midlife, the support of a skilled coach when figuring out what is next for you is a big deal.As coaches, we know clients sometimes have to justify hiring someone to help us. But the support coaches offer is so beneficial, especially during a transitional time. With the right approach (holistic in nature), coaches create safe and accepting environments to have deep conversations and work through the challenges of change. It is so liberating to have someone to talk to someone whose job is to provide guidance and encouragement. This is why the Master Coach Training program is so focused on creating the right environment for each of your clients. Change is an amazing opportunity for growthChange doesn't negate our lives, it takes us to where we want to be. We need to change for ourselves, which then changes a lot of other things. Change is all around us every day. It's the one constant. When you remove the “weeds” of fear and anxiety that are preventing change, you make room for flowers and plants to grow in the garden that is your life. About Jackie SwainsonWhen I turned 50, everything that could happen did! And life suddenly was not what I had expected or planned. My youngest twin boys left on their missions, my husband started an addiction treatment program away from home and my son and his wife lost a new baby. I felt so alone. My family needed me, so I soldiered on, like I was “supposed” to do. But I didn't have anyone present to minister to what I needed. I turned to my faith and my mom and dad and trusted friends. I journaled everything, and did come back to the surface. But along the way I experienced all the hard emotions, had to let go of some long held beliefs about myself, and step into change. It was a long, hard, but very rewarding process. And it is not over! I took this experience and used what I learned and became a Master Certified Life Coach so that I could help smooth the transition into this phase of life.I believe every midlife woman deserves a great life filled with joy, regardless of her circumstances. My experiences have fueled my mission to help you create the changes you desire. Let's quiet the voices telling you you're too old or forgotten. Instead, we'll focus on creating

Many coaches provide their services and then send an invoice later. This can lead to needing to follow up again and again and even needing to talk about an unpaid invoice during your coaching call, which is not what you want to spend your coaching calls discussing. Switching to a payment software or link that has clients pay and then schedule a call helps to take the uncomfortable process of following up about invoices out of the equation. It keeps things clear about what has been paid and what sessions were used.Let's raise the bar in the coaching industry by providing this improved client experience. Be clear about what you offer, give your clients an easy checkout, and have a clear process that tracks your client sessions without you needing to manage to add updates.Embrace Professional Scheduling ToolsUsing an automated scheduling tool or sending a calendar invite helps improve communication with your clients and enhances the client experience. If you spend time on these little things like manually sending email reminders, it is good to ask yourself what kind of business you are creating. If you are going to create a business, make it worth your time and make it worth your client's time. When your clients hire you, you are going to scoop them up. Let them know you've got them and will take care of whatever they need.Enhance the Onboarding ProcessYour onboarding process sets the tone for your client's journey with you. As women, we often make parenting seem effortless, but it's not, not at all. There are things in our lives that we want to change and improve, maybe your co-parenting or how you show up as a mom. Perhaps you want to hit certain goals in your income, in your life, or in your health. I help people just like you implement change and growth in your life.Where do I begin? How do I start creating change? We hear more and more about the way we believe, how we think, and our mindset. It already often feels challenging to begin implementing change, and there becomes the question of what's the best way to approach it. There are many ways to approach implementing change, and you have to find the best option for you.Four Important Aspects of Implementing ChangeMindsetThe way we think about our lives creates our experiences. If we believe that we are not capable of doing a great job of raising our kids on our own, we will struggle more because we have that belief. The way we think about our life matters. We all have experiences. Our brain turns these experiences into thoughts that seem to be absolute beliefs that become mindsets. It just happens. Mindset is just one of the ways you can implement change. Making shifts in how we think, not in a rose-colored glasses way, but in ways that truly serve you and help you experience more ease in your life.Awareness and attending to emotional needsBeing aware of your emotion set or the go-to emotions that you often experience. Understanding our go-to emotions sometimes allows a starting point for implementing change and cultivating a new emotion set that will feel and serve you better.Being Aware of Your Nervous System ResponsesOur nervous system can have some pretty big responses at times. It's important to be aware of what your nervous system activation looks like. You may have some triggering experiences, and you immediately feel heightened when something happens. There is emotion there, but it is more of a triggered response where things in your body feel somewhat out of your control or very automatic. Being aware of these moments will give us a better opportunity to work towards processing these emotions.Mikki GardnerMikki is a certified life coach who helps women become loving, strong, effective co-parents and create a life full of resilience, abundance and joy after divorce.Mikki's WebsiteListen to the Original Episode HereAccess full show notes and all links

Trusting Our Intuition and reclaiming our sexualityThe female body has become fetishized, and women are shamed for their sexuality. We are taught not to live and trust our embodied knowing, intuition, and wisdom. These pieces are essential to reclaiming our sexual energy and embracing our sexuality. Fearing the Embodied KnowingIn the past, women were trade healers and medicine keepers for their communities. This inherent knowing threatened the early inception of the church, which wanted to control the body. Midwives and healers became demonized and were even hung and burned. But, there are pockets of opportunity to build self-trust in this space from which we have been taught to fear and push away.As women, we have learned to fear our own pleasure. So many women feel embarrassed by their own pleasure, both sexual and sensual. Often, this fear comes from a radical unknowing, a radical discomfort with our pain. The practice of coming home to our pleasure and embracing our sexuality has so much to do with building a capacity. Building a CapacityBuilding the capacity in the body to hold more pain and, ultimately, pleasure comes back to doing work with your nervous system. Our nervous systems are calibrated to what's familiar, even if it is unpleasant. When you tie in the longstanding ancient negativity bias, we tend to be a lot more comfortable with an amputated pleasure range. The gateway to expanding that pleasure range is through discomfort. How can we sit with and cultivate the ability to be with discomfort? How do we feel clean pain without adding the story of dirty pain? How do we become present to the beautiful, tenderizing emotion of Greif? Grief is such a portal to pleasure. A tax advisor offers strategic planning to maximize your financial success. As the end of the year approaches, there are key things you can do with your coaching business that could have a pretty big impact on the taxes you pay this year. Having a handle on your numbers and knowing how to handle tax advantages means more money in your pocket and a better quality of life. This is where the expertise of a tax advisor comes in. They will help you be smarter with all the hard work you're putting into your coaching business.Tax Advisor vs. Tax PreparerYou can go find someone to prepare your taxes. However, there is a big difference in your financial strategy between a tax preparer and a tax advisor. As a coach building your business, you wear so many hats! And there are far too many skills to learn at once. When it comes to being smart with your taxes and money, make sure to get the right help from the beginning. Tax Preparer: They will take the information that you give them and prepare and file your taxes for you.Tax Advisor: They have a conversation with you to learn about your business and spending habits. They identify things in the tax code that are allowed based on your life and business activity and give you recommendations on what to invest in.When you work with a tax advisor, you are not only looking at this year's tax return but are setting long-term financial goals and putting strategies in place. We are always conscientious about what we are spending money on, and hiring a tax advisor can seem like another expense that is a nuisance. There's great news for you! Sandy will evaluate if working together is really going to be a financial benefit before you hire her. Yes, that's right - it's a guaranteed return on the investment. Bookkeeper vs. AccountantAs you build your coaching business, you're likely tracking finances (or using a bookkeeping service to do so). Did you know that there is a significant difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant when it comes to building your financial strategy?Bookkeeper: They are trained in how to use the software that tracks your expenses. They might manage billing and payroll.Accountant: Accountants, on the other hand, use bookkeeping records to provide in-depth financial analysis. They will check for errors to make sure that your financial statements are correct and can give you strategies about cash flow and where you can cut spending. While bookkeepers lay the foundation with meticulous record-keeping, accountants build on that to guide financial decision-making.Sandy TapiaSandy Tapia is the founder of SPT Business Consulting LLC. Being aware of these moments will give us a better opportunity to work towards processing these emotions.Mikki GardnerMikki is a certified life coach who helps women become loving, strong, effective co-parents and create a life full of resilience, abundance and joy after divorce.Mikki's WebsiteListen to the Original Episode HereAccess full show notes, transcripts and all links

As I've been taking applications for Master Coach Training, I've been hearing from more than a few coaches (many of whom I love and adore), who are questioning their coaching path (and whether or not to continue. I've experienced much of what you have, more times than you might believe and I've got a message for you.Dear Coach who wants to quit,I understand how you feel.Disheartened, discouraged, tired, maybe you're just ready for a little reprieve.I've been hearing from so many of you telling me that you're really at a decision point as to whether you continue this coaching journey or not. Many of you, I know. I see you - the go-getter who did all the things to succeed, only to encounter coaches and businesses who were unethical, less than honest, maybe even downright damaging to your psyche.I see you - the hopeful enthusiast - you never let a doubt stop you from going after it! And yet, overtime, the major shifts in the Life Coach School community and the coaching industry have left you doing something you never wanted to do - questioning your path.I see you - the heart-driven coach who is struggling to charge for your coaching. You've tried everything you know to do - thought work, emotion work, “pushing past fear,” and yet, you find yourself stuck in the rut, wondering if it will ever get better.I see you, and I have a message for you today. You came into this coaching path for a reason. I don't know the reason and I won't pretend that I do. Maybe it was for the impactful lessons you would learn. Perhaps it was a phase that taught you to hold to your priorities and values, no matter what was going on around you.And for some of you, it may be that this path is meant for you now and forever and this is a moment in time that you will lean into that purpose.I've wanted to quit more times than I can count. Failed launches, unethical coaching practices that made me cringe. Life circumstances that challenged me to my core and caused me to question everything about myself and my ability. And as I look back on the worst of times within all of this, I'm thankful for the gifted coaches who have carried me through and (most importantly), helped me build the muscles that I needed to stay strong and grounded, no matter what.Because of this, I won't quit on the coaching industry. The work we have to do here is way too important and, personally, I know I am meant to be here.If (and only if) this resonates with you, give yourself some time to pause within your doubt and confusion. Journal, meditate, pray, or connect with nature to access that knowing within you.I don't know the answer for you, but I do know that your purpose is great and YOU will know. Please don't allow bad coaching, unethical practices, or anything else you've experienced at the hand of others to keep you from following the course in life that is meant for you.Believe in your gifts and abilities. Trust your path. Be courageous enough to look within to find the answer you're seeking.Much love to you!XoMolly Connect with Molly ClaireMolly's Website: MollyClaire.ComMaster Coach Training 2025 Application Open Have a question or thoughts about the podcast? I didn't realize that even though I wanted to be successful in my business and be a better coach, thought work wasn't enough. I needed more.At the beginning of Master Coach Training, my business had maybe three to four paying clients. I was having doubts; it was really hard to get clients. I am the biggest benefactor. I feel like I have become superhuman because of all the emotional work and how consistently Molly coaches.Molly provides so much support in Master Coach Training, even outside of what we learn. I asked for help with consultation sessions, and Molly provided a framework for me to apply in my consultations that has really given me specifically what I needed to really lift off.Using the framework, I can breathe and take the call wherever a client needs it, and I know what she needs because of the work from Master Coach Training.I had the opportunity to go to a few networking events and moderated a panel in L.A. as a Stanford alumni. Before Master Coach Training, I would have gone into these events focused on meeting people and getting clients. But this time around, I went in loving myself and knowing that everything I did to prepare was more than enough and that I was going to have an amazing time. I didn't need to do more, be more, or add more pressure on myself. And I had so much fun. I got four or five new consults, and after moderating the panel, people asked if I did this professionally because I was so good. On this week's episode of The Masterful Coach, Molly Claire interviews one of her Master Coach Trainees, Jackie Swainson, about her coaching experience before, during and after her time in Master Coach Training. What compelled you to want to be a part of Master Coach Training and expand your training and knowledge? The previous trainings I had been in seemed like they were only touching the surface; you could tell there was more. I didn't really have the depth I wanted to go or help clients go to. I could feel in my body that something was missing. Having struggled with anxiety for years, I knew that it wasn't just in my head, that there was a physical response, a nervous system response. I wanted to somehow connect all of the pieces together. I did a lot of research and heard your name a lot. I thought this is a woman who can really teach me something. You can read all you want, but I love being taught. So you came to Master Coach Training because you knew there was more; you could feel that some things were missing, and this was the place to get it. What is it like for you now as a coach in your sessions, having more of the skillset and having that whole-person view?I can see and hear and feel what my clients are saying, what they are telling me, and what they are meaning. It is like reading between the lines; you get this intuition, this sort of sense of where they are. And that helps me ask questions that will guide them where they may not want to go, but I can guide them gently. I can give them perspective and help them find a perspective that is different because I am looking not just at what they are telling me; I'm looking at them; I'm listening to them. I am able to help my clients get into their hearts. I am learning alongside my clients. What are the top two or three things that you've either incorporated in our coaching because of Master Coach Training or what's really enhanced your ability to really serve your clients? What I learned the most is that I can trust myself. And if I can trust myself, other people can trust me. I am building that trust and personal connection. I'm so glad to have you here because we've, we've worked together for a while now, and it's just been really fun to watch you.Grow and evolve as a coach and just your expanded abilities. And of course, we'll talk about this more and get you all up to speed on what we're talking about. But, you know, Midore, as we're diving into this conversation, I'm thinking about some of our recent case study calls where. You're bringing a client situation and you're asking questions. And it's just been so fun to see how, um, the way that you are understanding your clients and navigating the challenges that come up with them. It's almost like there is not only is there a greater skill level for you. But you have that confidence right alongside it, and you're able to see more things going on with your client more easily and more quickly, which is just really fun to have seen that all I'll come to light. So, yeah, so glad to have you here. So tell, tell my audience, um, who are you as a coach? What do you do? Who do you focus on? [00:01:38] Midore: Yeah, I am a holistic life coach, and I dedicated to empower purpose driven individual to expand their vision and achieve meaningful goals. And my focus is on helping clients deepen their self connection, manage their time and energy and establish boundaries that align with their core values. So that it transform their obstacles into opportunities for lasting change. [00:02:17] Molly: Yes. I love it. And I think, you know, as you were, as you were talking Midore, and I'm thinking about, I think this idea of being a holistic coach, a lot of people hear that word. And sometimes they think about holistic physical health. They're thinking about supplements. And I think that, That's why it's really important, I think, as we're using this word to talk about what that means. And for you, it means this whole person approach, right? That we study and master coach training. And, um, and as I was listening to, to you share what you do and thinking about some of your clients that you are working with to achieve goals, it's so evident that. You are taking the time to create that self connection with them. And you're really taking a, a big picture, look at what's lacking for them. And then you're really able to help them fill the gaps in all of those areas, which is much different than just having kind of one approach and one tool only that you can use with a client.[00:03:19] Midore: I, um, myself being in your program and really understanding what my values are. And then when I really dialed in what they are, that decision making became so Much easier than ever before and ever since I have that tool I am able to Make a decision quickly. I am able to set the boundaries better and Communicate with the loved ones so much more effectively.[00:04:02] Molly: Yeah. I love that you brought that up because, um, and in just a minute, I need to make sure to flag this in my mind as I'm, as I'm talking with all of you and having this conversation with Midore, because I want to tell you a little bit about how Midore, uh, first came to master coach training, but. Five Truths about the Life Coaching Industry in 2024Have you heard whisperings that the coaching industry is overcrowded and that the "life coaching bubble has burst?" If so, you're not the only one hearing this rumor. Today, we are going to talk about what's really going on in the industry and what you should be focusing on as a coach in 2024. The Booming Life Coaching MarketThe life coaching industry is booming! Yes, that's right. The US life coaching market was valued at $1.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to surpass $2.29 billion in 2032 (Vision research reports). Also, the industry's revenue grew from $2.85 billion in 2019 to $4.65 billion in 2022, representing a 60% increase. So why are some people concerned that it's become overcrowded, making it harder for coaches to succeed? Why are people worried that the so-called "life coaching bubble" has burst? In this post, we'll explore five truths you need to know to understand the reality of life coaching today, including a few misconceptions that are perpetuating the rumors and fears. Truth #1: Growing Demand for Personal DevelopmentThe demand for personal development services, including life coaching, is on the rise. With increased awareness around mental health, productivity, and holistic well-being, more people are seeking out life coaches. The global coaching market was valued at over $2.85 billion in 2022, according to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and has been growing steadily for years.Think of the life coaching industry as the fitness industry. As more people become conscious of their health, the demand for personal trainers increases, even though there are more trainers entering the market. Similarly, as people prioritize their emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, the need for coaches continues to grow.Truth #2: Life Coaching Specialization is ThrivingWhile the term "life coach" might seem broad and crowded, specialization is where many coaches are finding success. Coaches who focus on niche areas such as executive coaching, relationship coaching, or mindset coaching are thriving. What I love about the work I do with my own Master coaches in training is that they are able to specialize and stand out as they create a program, but they are learning the fundamentals of a well-rounded approach. When you can have an understanding of the whole person in front of you and what they need from a mindset perspective, emotion work, action strategies that work, and even the nervous system - it allows you to dive deep into your chosen specialty and truly stand out with results. According to a report by ICF, 62% of coaches now offer niche-specific services. This specialization allows coaches to differentiate themselves and serve specific client needs.Consider the medical field: while there are many general practitioners, specialists like cardiologists or neurologists can focus on a particular area and are often in high demand. Life coaching works similarly, with niche coaches standing out and finding their market.Read the full show notes and access all links

Big Coaching Myths that are keeping you from highly effective coaching. It is so important to have effective coaching. Of course, we want to help our clients, and that is why we are in the coaching business. Effective coaching also impacts your business's bottom line and is more impactful than you may have realized.Effective Coaching: Results Get ReferralsAccording to a Nielsen Trust in Advertising Report, 92% of consumers trust recommendations from friends and family over any other form of advertising. In order to grow your business, you do not need to be a master of marketing. Marketing is a very important part of the equation, but when you are providing truly effective coaching that is creating real change in your client's lives, it opens the door to more meaningful connections through referrals.Effective Coaching: Results Get RenewalsPricewaterhouseCoopers (one of the largest professional services networks in the world) conducted a global study that found that 96% of clients are likely to repeat a coaching experience if they achieved positive results. Not only does creating results for your current coaches open the door for new referrals, but when you are working with a coach and able to help make meaningful changes in one area of their business, they will likely not want to let your relationship go. They will want to continue your work together. And you get to continue to watch your coaches grow. What is Coaching Effectiveness? There are many myths about how to gauge your effectiveness as a coach, which, if you are stuck in the cycle of believing, can actually prevent you from becoming a more highly skilled coach. Here are a few of these myths and how to break free of those thoughts.Myth #1: You can't control your client's resultsTruth: You have more of an ability to influence your client's growth than you realize.A Gallup study on workplace performance shows that 70% of the variance in team engagement is directly related to the quality of the manager or coach. The more skilled you are as a coach, the more progress your clients will make. In turn, you will get more referrals and renewals.Myth #2: Every problem is a thought problemTruth: Thought-work/mindset work used in isolation can be detrimental. (link to that previous blog post)If you are only focused on thought work with a client, you are missing out on key information that will lead you to effective coaching. Being a safe and skilled coach requires you to look at the "whole person," taking into account your client's thoughts, emotions, nervous system, and behavior patterns and looking at how they all intersect. Looking at thought-work in isolation can be detrimental. Access Full Episode

Strategies coaches need to know on how to deal with difficult clients

Have you ever wondered why some clients are more difficult clients to coach? Maybe you have that one difficult client who is so resistant, and no matter what work you do with them, they just don't seem to "get it." You're not alone, and there are reasons for it! And within those reasons lie the answers. Traits of difficult clients: 1. Resistant2. Doesn't want to go deeper3. Frustrated4. Stuck in the same cyclesWhat makes a difficult client? Remember that many factors come into play when working with clients on behavior changes, mindset work, or transformations involving emotional components. Their current state is a reflection of conditioning, experiences, and behaviors that have been programmed into the nervous system to automate them. Changing behavior patterns, re-programming thought patterns, and processing emotions takes time. It also takes skill and nuance with those skills as a coach. The best way to help your clients, even those who seem "difficult," is to understand the full picture of why they are behaving/thinking/feeling the way they do with a "whole person" approach. Often, when you are working with "difficult" clients, what you're experiencing is the stress response in the nervous system. It's not that they are difficult at all, it's just that they have a body, brain, and nervous system that is working. As a coach, this is an opportunity for you to fill in the skill or knowledge gap for your client. What makes this worse… is if you think of them as " difficult," which is most likely not helping the situation. Anticipating difficulty will put you in a tighter and closed emotional space, making it more likely that you will push them in ways that aren't helpful or be closed off from the wisdom of what they really need. ResistanceWhen it comes to "resistance" with clients, while this can be one of the most frustrating things for many of my coaches, it's also the most magical thing to work through! Anytime there is resistance, there is something really important underneath it. When we can be willing to lean into the resistance and learn (with the skills to do so safely with our client), that's when we can unlock some of the things that our client needs to pay the most attention to. Before I share a story, I'll preface this by saying that a client isn't always ready (or even emotionally equipped to) lean into it. This is why the skills to understand your client and all that's coming into play for them are vital as a coach. A Case Study: My Resistant clientI had one client years ago who was particularly resistant, that could have been percieved as a difficult client. Together, we could see this pattern over and over again in our sessions. Even worse than the resistance - she was criticizing herself for it. We decided to make space for the resistance. We decided to acknowledge it in the "room" with us, and we allowed it to be okay. This was just the starting point, but as we looked at what was underneath it, this client experienced a softening of her resistance. The topics in our sessions became more relevant to what was really going on for her. And the best part was that we started to release some of the shame that kept her shut down and feeling fearful far too often. 156. How thought-work can be detrimental: What you need to know

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2024 32:36

The Dangers of a Thought-Work Only Approach in Coaching: My StoryThis week on the podcast, I'm diving deep into a topic that's close to my heart—how a thought-work only approach to coaching can be not just limiting but downright detrimental. Trust me, I don't use the word "detrimental" lightly. It's a strong term, and I'm here to unpack why I believe it's crucial to broaden our understanding of transformation beyond mere thought management. The most important message I can give to coaches about thought workTypically, I like to keep my energy positive, but today's message carries a weight that I can't ignore. Too many mindset coaches are feeling frustrated with their thoughts, emotionally activated, or caught in a cycle of self-criticism that no amount of "mind management" seems to alleviate. If you've ever sensed that something is missing in a thought-work-only approach—whether for yourself or your clients—you are sensing something important. I've been in that dark place personally and coached dozens of people who found themselves there too. I've witnessed firsthand how an overly simplistic focus on thoughts can lead to critical self-judgment and emotional distress. While it's always been a priority for me to help my clients soften that harsh internal dialogue and create safe practices, I'm speaking out now more than ever about what every coach must know. The Evolution of My UnderstandingWhile I've touched on elements of this topic in the past, this week, I'm taking a stand. If you believe that thoughts are everything when it comes to transformation, it's time to reconsider. Yes, changing your thoughts is powerful. But when we use thought work in isolation, it can also be damaging. This thought work only perspective neglects vital scientific insights about how our thoughts, emotions, and nervous systems interact. If you're feeling a bit of resistance to what I'm saying, that's okay. I understand. I once fully embraced the notion that all problems stemmed from thoughts. While I saw incredible transformations during my early coaching years, it wasn't long before I began noticing adverse effects among my clients. At first, I attributed these to a "misuse" of thought work. But the reality was more complex.Understanding the Whole Person vs. a Thought Work Only approachThe key takeaway here is simple yet profound: not all feelings arise from thoughts. Emotions have their own narratives and are often stored within our bodies, carrying important messages. The nervous system plays a crucial role in this interplay, and a "thoughts create feelings" perspective ignores that. In fact, 80% of messages travel from our bodies to our brains, not the other way around. For example, a sympathetic nervous system response can hijack your thinking, shutting down your prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain responsible for rational thought. This is why relying solely on thought work can backfire. Ignoring the emotional and physiological aspects of our experiences can heighten trauma responses and create a cycle of cognitive bypassing.Access all links and full show notes

Redefining success is an empowering process that leads to genuine fulfillment. By embracing internal journeys, focusing on intrinsic motivations, and valuing inherent worth, individuals can break free from societal pressures and achieve a more balanced and meaningful life.Redefining success begins with Unlocking ConfidenceConfidence is a cornerstone of personal and professional success, yet many struggle to define or cultivate it.Confidence and success are two words often thrown around in the world of coaching and personal development. However, their true definitions go beyond surface-level interpretations. Delving deep into these concepts can reveal profound insights and strategies essential for coaches and their clients. This blog post encapsulates a recent enlightening conversation, providing valuable takeaways for those seeking to transform their approach to confidence and success. What is True Confidence?Confidence often feels like an elusive quality that many strive to define and cultivate. Rachel Brooks says it's not just about exterior accomplishments or outward appearances. True confidence starts within.Rachel elaborates that real confidence is about sifting through life experiences to discern what serves us in the present moment. It's about validating what's inherently valuable and beautiful within oneself, something easily dismissed in the rush of daily life. The Journey WithinConfidence, like many admired traits, starts from within. This journey often involves rediscovering and nurturing an inner spark that life's challenges might have dimmed. Individuals can gradually transform their external realities by focusing on what's within. The Power of StruggleThe butterfly's struggle to escape its cocoon is a perfect analogy. This struggle is not just a hardship but a necessary process that enables the butterfly to develop strength. Similarly, life's challenges, traumas, and societal pressures shape us as individuals and can lead us to evolve into more confident and capable versions of ourselves.Redefining SuccessThe concept of success often correlates with achievements and external validation. However, we challenge you to redefine your definition of success and focus on the importance of fulfillment.Fulfillment is subjective and varies from person to person. It's an art that requires introspection and alignment with one's core values and purpose. Rather than working to acquire accolades, focus on finding genuine fulfillment in your daily activities. Redefining success by focusing on what brings you joy is part of how you can uniquely bring your gifts to your coaching clients and others.About Rachel BrooksRachel Brooks is a multi-passionate entrepreneur, speaker, author, and podcaster. Empowering Coaches Through Emotional Resiliency and Nervous System MasteryCoaches today face a unique challenge in balancing their passion for helping others with the pressures of managing a business and personal life. Emotional resiliency and nervous system regulation are vital in achieving sustainable success as a business coach and in your personal life. Understanding the Importance of Emotional Resiliency in Your Nervous SystemEmotional resiliency is more than just a buzzword; it is the foundation of effective coaching and personal development. Coaches often operate under the assumption that sheer willpower and a positive mindset can overcome any obstacle. However, emotional resiliency involves a deeper connection to oneself, recognizing and managing emotions, and building the capacity to navigate highs and lows gracefully and efficiently. The Journey from Law to CoachingMichelle transitioned from practicing law to becoming a master coach, a journey deeply influenced by her experience with burnout during the pandemic. Her story echoes the experiences of many coaches who find themselves overworked and seeking a more balanced, impactful approach to their careers. Michelle realized that serving others while neglecting her emotional and physical well-being was not sustainable. This pivotal moment led her to explore life coaching and develop a passion for helping moms regulate their nervous systems. The Role of the Nervous System in CoachingThe nervous system is crucial to how individuals experience and respond to stress. Learning to regulate the nervous system can transform personal and professional lives. Coaches and their clients often operate from a place of survival brain—a state where stress and fear dominate decision-making processes. By focusing on regulating the nervous system, individuals can create a sense of safety, leading to more effective communication, better decision-making, and overall well-being.Mirror Neurons and Emotional ConnectionMirror neurons are responsible for the subconscious imitative behavior seen in humans. For example, when a person smiles or nods, those observing are likely to mimic these actions without conscious thought. This phenomenon is particularly significant in coaching and parenting, where the emotional states of coaches and parents are mirrored and internalized by clients and children.About MichelleHey Friend, I'm Michelle. Law professor turned master life coach and podcaster with big dreams, growing kiddos, and the world's sweetest husband. I'm passionate about teaching you how to regulate your nervous system. How your coaching program can increase results, sales, and profits. Have you ever noticed that the coaching industry is like the wild-wild West?! There are no rules, and no regulations, and things can get a little out of hand to be honest. In fact, just last week I saw a coach's sales pitch that made me sick to my stomach. The promise? To heal deep emotional wounds in 90 days or less, discouraging people from doing EMDR and other therapeutic practices that are evidence-based. Listen, coaches, this DOES NOT need to be discouraging. We can see this as an opportunity to rise and make the coaching industry better. Educate yourself, Learn all you can. Be a safe and ethical coach. There are good reasons that Master Coach Training (and every coach training and program that I offer) is holistic. This means we are taking into account the “whole person” view of your client. When you can understand more about the nervous system, emotional processing, and safe cognitive coaching practices- you can be incredibly effective and hold your head high. Today's post is focused on how your unique coaching program can bring a little structure to this wild-wild west. Your program can distinguish you from the work a therapist or other mental health professional does. It can also bring clarity to your potential clients as to how you help them. Many coaches have a more “open” process and struggle to define it with a program. If this applies to you, you might be surprised at how a structured approach can be more open than you realize, while creating phenomenal results. What is a coaching program? Why is it important? How do you get started with creating it? In one of my signature offers, Create Your Killer Program (CYKP), I walk my clients through the process step-by-step of creating a unique program. Creating a program is much simpler than you may realize, but when so much is unknown, it can be overwhelming. Let's talk about 5 reasons you need a clear coaching program. Most people don't know what coaching is. “Coaching” is a catch-all term for various types of services. Consulting, business advice, emotional processing, and mindset work; are just a few categories within the coaching umbrella. While it's becoming more popular, you must assume that most people don't know what you do, and (more importantly), they don't know what it means in practical terms for them. When people feel uncertain, they won't buy. A clear, specific program with a strong marketing offer will communicate to people what results they will get from working with you. It will take what is vague and intangible, to something much more concrete. In CYKP my clients create a clear program, but also a clear marketing statement for it - it makes all the difference! When you sell coaching, you are selling nothing. Few people are looking for coaching, many people are looking for help in solving their problems. When you have a clear coaching program set, it helps you define and refine how you speak to your ideal clients. With no clear program outlined, many coaches find themselves stumbling over their words to explain to people what they do. This breeds insecurity, imposter syndrome, and a pile of regret and embarrassment after a conversation. A clear program gives you words to speak and a plan that your clients can understand. People want change and it IS possible. The fields of...

The Benefit of Client Testimonials: Capturing and Leveraging Client ResultsClient testimonials are a key component to coaching success. In the ever-evolving world of coaching, creating an impactful and successful practice requires more than just passion. It involves a strategic approach to capturing and leveraging client results. This conversation delves into actionable insights on how coaches can enhance their practice by focusing on client outcomes and continuous improvement.Embracing the Power of Client ResultsSuccessful coaching hinges on helping clients achieve tangible results. By actively showcasing these results, coaches can attract more clients and reinforce the value of their services. This process begins with a deep belief in the coaching methodologies employed. It's crucial to constantly develop and test frameworks to ensure they deliver the promised outcomes. The Importance of Client TestimonialsSome coaches might feel uncomfortable asking for testimonials, but it's a vital step in building credibility. Establishing a formal process for requesting feedback can make this easier. Coaches can gather detailed and authentic client testimonials by embedding feedback requests within the coaching timeline, particularly during high-momentum phases.Highlighting client successes through testimonials, especially those acquired informally and authentically, can add significant weight to a coach's reputation. Real-time grabs from client interactions or direct feedback provide credible, relatable proof of impact.Overcoming Common PitfallsA common misstep for new coaches is seeing the conclusion of a coaching container as the end of the relationship. Continuous engagement and nurturing relationships post-container are crucial. This includes discussing future work and potential renewals throughout the coaching period. By doing so, coaches can transform what might feel like an awkward ending into a seamless continuation of service.Building a Framework for SuccessCreating a structured coaching framework is essential. Original and proprietary methodologies set coaches apart in a crowded market. Regularly testing and refining these frameworks with real clients ensures they remain relevant and effective.Furthermore, sharing results within and outside the coaching community via newsletters, social media, and podcasts builds trust and showcases the coach's ability to drive transformations. Building a solid foundation is invaluable to your business success.Building a Solid Foundation using SEO StrategiesA solid business foundation begins with a personal brand. By being distinct and clear about who you are and the results you can deliver, you set yourself up for sustainable business success.A business foundation needsan optimized websitean engaged email listUnlike what you post on social media platforms, you have complete control over these elements, which are up to the platform's discretion. Clarity and Client ConnectionWhen you want to attract your ideal or soulmate clients, you must be extremely clear on what you provide and who you are there to help. Robyn describes these as soulmate clients - clients with whom you share a deep and meaningful connection, leading to better results and long-term relationships. Unlike the superficial connections often formed on social media, soulmate clients are those who truly understand your value and are aligned with your mission.Authenticity and DifferentiationBeing on social media can often lead to comparison and even trying to mimic others' successful strategies. You must avoid mimicking others to be authentic and connect with your soulmate clients. Your authenticity will attract your soulmate clients and differentiate you from others in your field. It also helps eliminate the feelings of doubt and imposter syndrome that often come from comparing oneself to others on social media.Trust and Mutual RespectIn discussing client relationships, Robyn emphasized the significance of mutual trust and respect. It's not enough for clients to trust you; you must also trust them to take your advice and implement your strategies. This mutual respect fosters a collaborative environment where you and your clients can thrive.SEO Strategies: A Tip from RobynEnsure that you have a photograph of yourself on your homepage, on your About page, and sprinkled throughout your website. Don't overlook your personal gifts and how impactful those are to your soulmate clients.Expanding and shifting your skillsets to best serve your clientsPart of adding to your coaching toolbox and being an impactful coach is being in tune with your client's needs. Checking in with your clients and looking for what needs to be addressed so you can bridge that gap and meet their needs is invaluable to your effectiveness as a coach. You are in this field because you believe in what you do, and you not only care about your clients but are devoted to their success.Remember to stay in tune with your clients, look for what is needed, and then find a way to bridge that gap, whether that means searching for a new modality or shifting your perspective and adding to what is already in place.Teach what you believe in and have experienced. One of the things Brenda deeply believes in is to teach what you know. When working with clients, she looks at them and her own journey and growth and asks herself, How can I learn and grow to find the right tool if I do not have the tools to support this particular client?Part of delivering the best service for your clients is your investment in their personal growth and being committed to growing so that you can help find the right tools to support them along their journey.Adding self-care tools to your coaching toolboxMost entrepreneurs have learned to work hard and hustle to get their businesses off the ground. However, it is just as important to learn self-care habits to prevent overexhaustion or burnout. Working hard is wonderful, but not when you do it at your own expense.Learning to listen to your body and when you need rest and honoring that is an invaluable skill. There is always a list of one million things that need to be done—that list never ends—but it does not all need to be fixed today. Honor when you need to rest, and you, too, just might find that you are able to have your best thinking and coaching once you are rested.Instead of asking, have I worked hard enough to rest? Ask, have I rested enough to work hard? Apply the tools you offer to clients to yourself first, and make sure you take time to rest.About Brenda LomeliBrenda Lomeli is a Master Life Coach.
