For the forty-sixth episode of the Integral Stage Author Series, Layman sits down to talk with John H. Buchanan about his new autobiographical and philosophical meditation on process thought, death, psychedelics, and the journey from addiction to sobriety and meaningful living. John H. Buchanan received his master's degree in humanistic/transpersonal psychology from West Georgia College and his doctorate from the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory University. He has been trained and certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner by Stan and Christina Grof. His book, "Processing Reality: Finding Meaning in Death, Psychedelics, and Sobriety", based upon his continuing interests in process philosophy and transpersonal psychology, was published in the fall of 2022. In this episode, Kyle interviews John H. Buchanan, Ph.D.: certified Holotropic Breathwork practitioner; contributing co-editor for Rethinking Consciousness: Extraordinary Challenges for Contemporary Science; and author of the new book, Processing Reality: Finding Meaning in Death, Psychedelics, and Sobriety. Recorded shortly after a week-long philosophy and breathwork conference which they both attended, they mostly dig into the challenging philosophical concepts of Alfred North Whitehead: how everything is made up of a feeling; how everything is relational and we all feel each other's experiences; how Whitehead defined occasions and how moments of experience are accessing the totality of the past; and how neurology and the mind-brain interaction impacts human experience. This analysis leads to a lot of questions: Is the past constantly present, in that it is an active influencer on all our actions? When we relive a past event, where does that live in our minds vs. bodies? Are we tapping into a universal storehouse of past events, or are we tapping into past lives (or into others past lives)? When we sense that someone is looking at us, what is that? He also discusses his realization that the experiential element of non-ordinary states of consciousness was the most important; his entry point into breathwork; why breathwork creates a perfect atmosphere for conversation; reincarnation and the idea of being reincarnated into other dimensions; the concept of objective immortality and how ripple effects from a single moment continue onward; and the fallacy of misplaced concreteness and psychoid experiences: Are they real beyond our psyche? In this episode of I Thought You'd Like to Know, Dr. Stacy Trasancos presents for the Institute for Theological Encounter with Science and Technology on Assessing Contemporary Science in the Light of Faith. (January 15, 2022)Today we hear, “Follow the science!” People use that idiom as if to say that science is the path to all truth and that if we follow where science leads, we will never be led astray. But science doesn't work like that. The Catholic Church has a long history, codified in Genesis and professed still in our Creed, that science is the study of the handiwork of God. Science is a search for truth, but it must be guided by the light of faith. Dr. Trasancos tells about her efforts to reunite contemporary science back with theology and philosophy in a more mature way than the Middle Ages when science was first born of Christianity. To authentically follow science in the light of faith will be the way to true progress in technology that benefits humanity, both in this world and the one to come.https://faithscience.org/theology-of-science/

Hello all, welcome to this new episode of Elva's Monologue.   Since we are in February, which is traditionally the month of love because of the V Day, why not talk about love? Of course, LOVE is a big topic.  Like everyone else, I have been fascinated by it - its nature, its power and its mystery.  Often we think of love as romantic love (which can be either beautiful or heart-breaking like in the move “Love, Actually”), or as our love of chocolate or as that deep bonding between parents and children. Although I am not an expert in love, in this monologue I would like to share three key aspects of LOVE, I personally find enlightening and empowering, and curious to hear your view on them.  Ancient Wisdom of Love  From the beloved Sufi poet Rumi to the yogi master Yogananda, love transcends our human need to love and be loved.  Rather, love serves as a bridge between the mortal body and the immortal soul.  The concept of love, as I understand, is the root of all positive emotions such as loving kindness, compassion and gratitude. However, what I have learned and what has surprised me is that even negative emotions such as fear also stemmed from love, as fear is the lack of love.  Fear is like darkness – darkness lacks intrinsic substance, and it is merely devoid of light.  Contemporary Neurochemistry of Love  As a lover (no punt intended!) of neuroscience, love can also be explained neuro-chemically. For example, Oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone” plays an important role in intimacy, social bonding and reproduction. It helps us relate to others, creating trust, closeness in relationships, and it can be triggered by eye contact or cuddles. A new mother's oxytocin levels (breastfeeding) is well-known to affect the bond she makes with her baby; however recent research also shows that caring for infants also stimulates the release of oxytocin in fathers, making them not just better fathers but happier human beings.  Elva's Meditation Insight - Love as a State of Being  Yet, my personal take on love was inspired by the Chinese character for love - 愛,which is pronounced as the English word “I”. This insight came to me during one of my deepest meditations that love = 愛 = I, meaning that love is the very being of I and of ourselves.  Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy some of my take on "LOVE", and if you have any comments, pls feel free to message me!  To learn more about Rumi (the great Sufi poet) : https://www.britannica.com/biography/Rumi  To learn more about Yogananda: https://www.yogananda-srf.org/  To learn more about Oxytocin: https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/basics/oxytocin

Some may simply think of alchemy as the attempt to change base metals into gold. A few may know that, with this art, people attempted to produce the elixir of life which could heal any illness and extend the drinker's longevity. However, it is often romanticised as the mystical (if confused) early roots of modern science, or conflated with other branches of knowledge like chemistry, ritual magic, and herbalism. The art of alchemy, however, was distinct. A discipline composed of theories and practices which shared the goal of producing the philosopher's stone. With roots in antiquity, the art flourished in the early medieval Arabic world before being brought to Europe in the high middle ages. In this episode we begin to discuss this complex art, and how it made sense to medieval scholars, given how they understood the world to work.References and further readings: Bartlett, Robert. Dr. Fortin explores man’s natural inclination toward fatherhood, as well as the salience of the Thomistic teaching regarding Natural Law and Eternal Law with respect to the role of fatherhood. Dr. Fortin elucidates the generative power of the Cross, as well as the relational validity of espousal and sonship to fatherhood. Dr. Timothy Fortin and Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis consider how the call to the priesthood is ultimately reconciled with the natural and supernatural call to fatherhood which is planted deeply within each man’s heart. Jawel, zal Laurens beargumenteren. Veel kijkplezier. So what is the reason for this? How has the current process incentivized the publication of studies that may not be the best reflection of the truth? And what can we do about it? Turns out, there is a lot we can do about it! THIS ARTICLE IS CURRENTLY OPEN ACCESS SO FOLLOW THE LINK TO READ IT! The Weak Spots in Contemporary Science (and How to Fix Them). Wicherts JM.
