Zack Snyder first pitched the idea Seven Samurai in Space when he was in college. In 2012, he pitched it to Kathleen Kennedy as his way of “fixing” Star Wars. Sorry for this one being a little late! Had some personal stuff come up that threw me off. Next week we'll be posting an episode to keep up with the schedule. Still having no answers, the group's only hope is to wait for Kashan to recover from his wounds while also keeping him safe from Tabian's reach. But at the end of the day there may not be any of the answers they want as they confront the headmaster directly... Cursed Canvases blamed for the deaths of their owners, portraits whose inhabitants have a habit of leaving the frames, and even one that was said to possess the artist to paint itself. Today on The Odder, we are talking about cursed and haunted paintings and what happened to the poor souls that owned them. In October 2008, Chris Sanders was asked to take over a troublesome film with a March 2010 release date. He immediately called his old co-director Dean Deblois. Somehow, despite everything we've ever discussed on this podcast, the film they made is good. How To Train Your Dragon is the opposite of almost every film we've covered before - an instant classic that pushed the animation form and made bold calls on a tight deadline, and actually stuck the landing. But to understand how it pulled that off, we need to cover early Dreamworks, renaissance Disney, and a little picture book called The Big Bear Aircraft Company. With the immediate trouble in Albrenn behind them, it is time for Fennel to return to the Artificer Guild in Gaelrith. Seven years after Rogue One, Gareth Edwards is back with his new film The Creator, an original science fiction blockbuster about robots, AI and true love. The film has been surrounded by breathless reporting of its $86 million budget, the $4000 camera it was shot on and the future of blockbuster filmmaking - but, like most film reporting, the truth is far more complicated than the headlines. And it's oddly fitting for a film about AI to have its human artists so quickly erased. In 2006, more than a year before the Writers Strike, twelve producers of America's Next Top Model walked off their job to demand a new contract: as Writers protected by the Writers Guild of America. The production company refused to bargain with the WGA, worried it would set a dangerous precedent by giving Reality TV producers higher wages, residuals and writer credits. The WGA, on the other hand, were determined to set that precedent. The Top Model Strike was a disaster. Reality TV was one of the most complicated issues during the 07/08 Writers Strike - because while the WGA demanded blanket coverage of Reality TV Writers, the TV Networks denied reality TV even had writers and filled their schedules with non-union reality TV shows to ride out the strike. And while the WGA had failed to unionise Reality TV workers, the Director's Guild of America had already been moderately successful, and weren't asking for it in their next contract - making them a much easier group for the studios to negotiate with. On a dark summer night on the set of American Graffiti, Ron Howard asked George Lucas what film he wanted to do next. Lucas was shy with details, but he said it was sort of a Buck Rogers film with Stanley Kubrick special effects, but really, really fast. Both Howard and Lucas would go onto wildly successful directorial careers, but while George Lucas was stuck in a galaxy far far away, Howard became a journeyman, directing all styles, genres and budgets. When Solo: A Star Wars Story needed a steady pair of hands to take over and get the now director-less film onto screens in just 11 months, Howard was one of the few directors with the experience, technical skill and clout to pull it off. Howard's version of Solo was always going to be a compromise. But by picture lock, very little of anyone's vision remained. Join us for the breakneck conclusion of Going Solo. In December 2016, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released into the world. With six weeks of reshoots, a painfully short edit, an unexpected election and a new composer after the first one dropped out due to "scheduling issues", the film was finally finished - the day before its premiere. But was it successful? And more importantly, was it political? In this final episode of Going Rogue, we look at Rogue One's release, and legacy, and the new life it's about to take in Andor. Rogue One has now fascinated and captivated me for longer than every person who worked on it (expect John Knoll) - but why? What is it the film that haunts my every waking hour? I saw it in IMAX yesterday and I finally clocked Tony Gilroy's cameo. Did you know Tony Gilroy has a cameo in Rogue One? It's just his voice but he's the Rebel traffic controller who asks for their callsign and when Bodhi's like "... Rogue One?" it's Gilroy who says "Rogue One? There is no Rogue One?!" and honestly what a choice to make for the cameo. Gareth Edwards launches the Tantive V and saves the rebellion. Gilroy says "There is no Rogue One". In 2013, Gareth Edwards pretended he was going to get lunch, and instead went to a meeting with Kiri Hart at Lucasfilm. He was one of a handful of promising young directors who'd been handpicked to direct a new Star Wars film, off the strength of his low-budget debut Monsters. Edwards was offered Destroyer of Worlds, originally pitched by VFX legend and Edwards's personal hero, John Knoll. Gary Whitta went into his meeting at Lucasfilm surprised to be considered for a film project at all, but his ideas hit the right note, naming basically every major influence Knoll had listed in his pitch. Whitta would write the first draft and come up with the film's title, Rogue One, before being replaced by Chris Weitz, Oscar nominated writer and noted Boba Fett hater. In the middle of all of this was Colin Goudie, an editor hired twelve months before Rogue One even started shooting, tasked with making the film out of other films. Welcome to the messy, contradictory world of Rogue One's script. Our intrepid group of adventurers have been through a lot since they’ve entered the Echo Forest, but their journey has come to its end. It’s time to gather their gear, come up with a plan, and lead an assault on Bo’Ko’Ko, the goblin capital, and home to Haversack’s bugbear master, who they’ve been hired to kill. Can they break into Bo’Ko’Ko and face down an empire? Can they give Haversack the fight, and the closure he needs? Previously, the group accepted a job from a goblin named Haversack to kill his former master, who dwelled deep in the Echo Forest. Last we left our friends they had just accepted a job from a goblin named Haversack, who was willing to pay the group to kill his ex-master deep in the Echo Forest. The problem is, the Echo Forest is named as such for it’s piercing ringing, which drives anyone who stays within it mad. The group’s Forged needed a way to protect their hearing, and so they turned to a local ritualist named Lexter to help them through arcane means. He was willing to do so, in exchange for a favor at a later date. We return now as the group finds a way to kill time while Lexter works his ways... Previously, the World Walkers found themselves before the presence of an ancient elemental named Narmul in hopes of saving their guide, Tompkins. However, before it would help, it sought to understand them. It asked a series of questions, but it was Roborto who perhaps received the most difficult question of all. Would he join with Narmul, leave his friends behind and sacrifice himself, in order to help the waking and dreaming worlds in ways he could never imagine while chained to his body. And then… some asshole cut the episode off before anyone could get an answer. Well, don’t worry. Questions will be answered. Even the biggest question of all... In 1921, a Methodist minister in Birmingham, Alabama, shot and killed a Catholic priest in broad daylight in front of witnesses. The resulting murder trial was a sensation because it featured so many elements of intolerance including Southern racism, anti-Catholicism, and xenophobia. This is the story of the murder of Father John Coyle. February 15 Ever Mindful The Lord hath been mindful of us: he will bless us. (Psalm 115:12) I can set my seal to that first sentence. Cannot you? Yes, Jehovah has thought of us, provided for us, comforted us, delivered us, and guided us. In all the movements of His providence He has been mindful of us, never overlooking our mean affairs. His mind has been full of us—that is the other form of the word mindful. This has been the case all along and without a single break. At special times, however, we have more distinctly seen this mindfulness, and we would recall them at this hour with overflowing gratitude. Yes, yes, "the Lord hath been mindful of us." The next sentence is a logical inference from the former one. Since God is unchangeable, He will continue to be mindful of us in the future as He has been in the past; and His mindfulness is tantamount to blessing us. But we have here not only the conclusion of reason but the declaration of inspiration; we have it on the Holy Ghost's authority—"He will bless us." This means great things and unsearchable. The very indistinctness of the promise indicates its infinite reach. He will bless us after His own divine manner, and that forever and ever, Therefore, let us each say, "Bless the Lord, O my soul!"
