Episode 117: Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party (1985) - Part 2 After a brief interruption to record an "emergency episode," Brian and Sarah return to their examination of the 1985 Oingo Boingo album Dead Man's Party. This classic release just celebrated its 35th anniversary, and our hosts are ready to continue the festivities by flipping the record over to Side Two and talking about the five tracks found there. Side Two features two singles, one of which has the distinction of attaining the highest position on the Billboard chart in the band's history. The other single took on a life of its own a few years later, in the country of Brazil! Track-by-Track, continued As the hosts talk about the songs on Side Two, they reveal even more songs on this album that have made their way into American movies and television shows. They also mention some movies that don't have any obvious connections to Oingo Boingo, such as the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the 1944 film Going My Way, starring Bing Crosby! Brian and Sarah also discuss one video they both love, and one video which one of them likes better than the other, and which Danny Elfman hates! Side Two: Stay Fool's Paradise Help Me Same Man I Was Before Weird Science Extra Credit: For extra credit, each host has selected an additional Boingo-related song to briefly discuss. Sarah's choice is a brand-new release, and Brian's choice is from the same recording sessions as Dead Man's Party. Happy Take Your Medicine Final Review and Rating With the extra credit section complete, all that's left is for Brian and Sarah to present their final evaluations and ratings for the album. Given the imagery on the album cover, perhaps they should have changed their rating symbol for this album to grinning skulls instead of record adpaters! Episode 115: Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party (1985) - Part 1 A few weeks ago, Sarah suggested that we discuss Oingo Boingo's amazing 1985 album "Dead Man's Party" in episode #115 as it would be released right around Halloween. That turned out to be an even better idea than she realized! Why? Because this episode is hitting your podcast app-of-choice exactly 35 years to the day that Boingo's fourth LP first appeared on record store shelves! Happy Birthday, DMP!! The show starts with a discussion of how the band's multi-talented leader Danny Elfman discovered his love of and skill with music. We trace his development through his post-high school wandering days, his time in the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, the big switch over to just Oingo Boingo, and then his career in the genre of film scoring. From there, we learn about the many musicians who make up this fantastic group, the artists responsible for the quirky and attractive album cover, and we go in-depth into the four songs that appear on the record's first side. Along the way, we touch on a seemingly random Boingo/Bond connection, the first thing Brian spent his money on after moving into his college dorm, versatile character actor Neal McDonough, a song which heralded the release of the film "The Sixth Sense", and the premiere of the PRP Q&A. It's an epic Halloween installment of PRP and we hope you enjoy it!! When the full moon starts to climb, we'll all sing out... it's time to talk about the best stop-motion animated Halloween/Christmas movie musical ever made! Hee hee hee hee heeee! Tim Burton and Danny Elfman's maniacal miniature-musical The Nightmare Before Christmas was unusual when it came out in 1993 and, despite the fact that it went on to became a beloved Disney classic, is still unusual today. The centerpiece ensemble song "Making Christmas," during which the well-meaning but hopeless denizens of Halloween Town attempt to craft their own kind of creepy Christmas, is a crucial turning point for the film, both narratively and musically. In this episode, Kirk takes a closer look at what makes "Making Christmas" tick, from its densely interwoven character motifs to its ever-shifting orchestration to its earth-shaking contrabass woodwinds. Band/Artist: Danny Elfman and the Halloween Town Cast Album: The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, 1993 Composed by: Danny Elfman Listen/Buy: Apple Music | Amazon | Spotify ------ ALSO FEATURED: Various other songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, 1993 "The Simpsons Theme" by Danny Elfman, 1989 "Dead Man's Party" and "Weird Science" by Danny Elfman/Oingo Boingo from Dead Man's Party, 1985 "Dies Irae" performed by the monks of the Abbey of Notre Dame "Theme from The Shining" by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind, 1980 "The Carol of the Bells" by Mykola Leontovych, 1914, with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky, as conducted by John Williams on the soundtrack from Home Alone ------ Update 10/31: After I published this episode on the 30th, several listeners wrote in to tell me about the Dies Irae, a 13th century Gregorian death chant that also shares the first four notes of the "Making Christmas" motif and has turned up in a TON of movies besides. I wasn't familiar with the Dies Irae (I know!), so I've updated the episode to include a mention of it. You'll have to redownload the episode if you want to hear that version. You can also watch a great Vox explainer video about the Dies Irae here: https://www.vox.com/videos/2019/9/16/20868789/creepy-melody-movies-catholic-chant-lion-king-shining - Kirk ------ NEW MUSIC VIDEO! Join us for Dead Man's Party, the episode where all the characters forget how they felt about Buffy a day ago and no one remembers what Buffy dealt with last season. It is also the episode where Buffy is alarmingly mum about her time away, even the parts that aren't about a life trauma, like being trapped in a hell dimension where people aged really fast. It is weird that in Buffy's world that ISN'T the most traumatic thing that happened to her that summer. Dan is back for the Dead Man's Party and to explain why Pat is the WORST kind of person imaginable.
Michael Poley has never seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But for whatever reason all his friends are fanatics. In this podcast, he watches a TV show about kids in high school with his best friends from high school. 20 years later. In this episode, we discuss only the most important things, such as: • Does your family deal with emotions by eating? • What is Pat & Joyce fan fiction like? • Is Joyce a ghost that can't exist outside the house? • Do you do regular things? In this week’s game of “who is the actual worst” we get a little argumentative about the first to episodes of Season 3! (Hint: It’s still probably Xander) Buffy returns home from a summer vacation spent in a Season 1 episode of Angel, while her friends have been teaming up to keep the streets safe from 6 out of 10 vampires. Anger and passive aggressiveness ensue, but there’s nothing like a good zombie invasion to cut the tension, amiright?

The ultimate metaphor of not burying things is handled in this episode in which the dead rise, we also meet the show's scariest villain to date. Bob and Chelsea discuss.

So, life got in the way of the podcast a little bit these last two weeks but we are back to give you your regularly scheduled dose of Buffy. This week we talk house parties, Joyce's parenting skills, and zombies with return guest Joey from the Podmax Podcast. Check em out. http://podmaxpodcast.libsyn.com/
This week we REALLY start to get into the nitty gritty! The episode is like a case study in how not to deal with emotional stress and interpersonal issues. Join our gang at the zombie infested hootenanny where it all comes to a head! Thanks for listening!
Michaela and David party on with Buffy's third season "Dead Man's Party". Our intrepid hosts quickly get distracted and stop talking about the actual episode, preferring instead to relate anecdotes and delve into the deep world of French Buffy forums. Fear not though, there's still plenty of discussion about both fashion and hair. Contact Us: bienvenue.hellmouth@gmail.com
In this episode literally everyone is a dick to Buffy. Seems like people aren't cool with Buff taking a self-carecation and feel that it's as good excuse as any to take their latent issues out on her. Luckily, we have Seawitchling with us again to give proper attitude back to the Scooby Gang - who obviously need a good dose of snark leveled back at them.
What are your feelings on brie, Gentle Listeners? Because your Babes are getting political! In this episode we discuss everything from Cranberries to empanadas, and go in hard on Joyce and her self-righteous mom bullshit. There's a real deficit of sympathy going on in Sunnydale this week, and not everyone makes it out alive! Watch out for backstabbing rants, Patches the cat, and Zombiiiies, Zombiiies, Zooooombi-i-iiiiees.... Suggested talking points: gatherings, shindigs, hootenannies, and party villas
And we're into Season 3 of Buffy!Without Buffy or Cordelia, the rest of the gang is trying to take care of the vampire problem- not very successfully, either. Willow has had a significant upgrade to her wardrobe, but she's still lacking- I hope this means that her character will finally become more than what she is now. It's progress.Buffy, though, is working as a waitress in LA, living in a crappy apartment, when she runs into Lilly, one of the vampire groupies from last year. Unlike the rest of the population of this world, she actually seems to remember what's going on. When he boyfriend goes missing, she turns to Buffy for help. It turns out that there's some demons in a weird time-slowed realm that are kidnapping homeless teenagers, working them for centuries, and returning them the next day having aged into their sixties. It's weird. Poor Lilly is caught up in it, and Buffy goes to the new realm to save her.And then in episode two, we get Buffy returning, dealing with the fallout of her running away from her mother and her friends, with only Cordelia there to defend her. Being a slayer is hard, guys, your feelings are a low priority. Get your shit together. Be more like Cordy. Also, don't throw a massive house party for your friend when you need to reconnect. Also beware of zombies, cause that's a thing that happened and went absolutely nowhere. The show is improving, 100% in quality over where it was in the first season, but let's be honest, it's still doing too much, retreating to its comfort zones and not giving its storyline enough time to breathe. I'm excited to see the show improve, it's almost at the point where I would watch this as a weekly show.
We're discussing Episode 2 "The Descent into Hell Isn't Easy" and Episode 3 "Dead Man's Party" of Shadowhunters TV this week! We also talk about an interview showrunner Todd Slavkin did with Empire Online, and expand on the discussion we had online with some fans. On Wednesday, November 2 we're watching & live tweeting Episodes 3 & 4 from the podcast account on Twitter, @theparabataipod. Episode 18 will air November 7!

In today's episode, I recap this weeks episode of Freeform's Shadowhunters titled "Dead Man's Party". To start off, I read a couple of my favorite tweets from this weeks #ShadowhuntersChat and boy, there are some good one. During the recap I go over everything from the opening to the heartbreaking ending (at least it is to me - lol) and yes, I talk about those steamy seduction scenes in between Izzy and Meliourn (ew) and Simon and Camille. It's party time in Sunnydale! Amanda and Andrea talk about how parties make them uncomfortable, and how they can totally empathize with Buffy in this episode. The Scoobies are being super passive aggressive, and Snyder's all tingly. The ladies also talk about how. with characters as 'real' and human as the one's on Buffy are, they're super frustrating sometimes.
We're back Across the Airwaves Listeners and it was just in time for the party on Sunday Night. A Dead Man's Party to be exact as Fear The Walking Dead had the highest new cable series ratings of all time. Obviously, with this new show drawing so much attention Nico and I had to review its six episode first season as a build up to The Walking Dead being added to our slate of reviews beginning with its Season 6 Premiere on October 11th. So join us today for a discussion on the pilot for Fear The Walking Dead where we talk about our concerns going into the show, how it differs from The Walking Dead and why this spinoff series fits within the compelling nature of the critically acclaimed Zombie Apocalypse dreamed up by writer Robert Kirkman. Also, I'm sad to say there is no News with Nico section this week because we're just returning from vacation and there were just way too many stories to cover from the time we were away but expect the section to return by storm with our Fall Premiere that will be released around the time of Doctor Who's return on Saturday, September 19th. News with Nico Headlines: This section will be returning with our Fall Premiere Episode the week of September 19. TV Shows Reviewed on This Week's Podcast: Fear The Walking Dead: S01E01 Pilot

It's the ninth episode, and the second season of Buffy ends not with a whimper, but with a punch to the gut. In this episode The Heroes debate the relative merits of Xander being a dickbag, discuss how Buffy loses and then subsequently gets her groove back, and perhaps the greatest alliance of this show to date is formed. Oh, and also, zombie kitties. Preston and Hannah top off season two with "Becoming" (parts 1 and 2), and then skim the surface of season three with "Anne" and "Dead Man's Party." Stop on in, have some hot chocolate, and have your heart ripped out.

Paul Maki makes a long overdue return to the podcast to discuss the second episode from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's third season, "Dead Man's Party". Buffy and her friends are trying to readjust to having her back, but no one is saying what needs to be said. Meanwhile, Joyce has found a new supportive friend in the last three months, and an ancient, cursed mask that apparently raises the dead. Isn't it pretty? Please join Paul and I as we talk about odd character behavior, thin phlebotinums, Sunnydale home owner's insurance and the chemistry between actors Nicholas Brendon & Charisma Carpenter. Zombies and Beer Bongs and Dead Cats, oh my! Please listen for the preemptive countdown before starting the episode on your DVD.
This time in 2006 was the last time I saw Bobby Pickett alive. When he came to the BluePower studio he told us he wasn't well and jokingly said, "We'd better make this a good show as it may be my last."I don't think it was quite Bobby's last show but very close. On the 25th of April, 2007, the world lost a wonderful human being and a gifted entertainer.I can't think of a better show for Halloween than this show featuring our dear departed friend....Bobby Pickett. _____________________________________________Ever since I've known Bob, I have marveled at his elegance of manner, his ultra-quick wit and his well focused insight to character. We have recorded dozens of commercials and a whole lot of bits together. (He as talent and I as engineer) Through hours of being on the other side of the glass, I gained a great deal of respect for this talented man's work.Forty-five years ago, a tiny record lable called GARPAX released a single (45 rpm record) to the world. The A side, written by Bob and Lenny Capeci is titled "Monster Mash" and has become synonymous with the holiday, Halloween. There are very few people in the world whom haven't heard, "They did the mash....they did the Monster Mash. It was a graveyard smash!"And smash it was. This one song has kept Bobby "Boris" Pickett in groceries for forty-five years. and....as Bob mentions, "It's more than paid the rent."Bob will be appearing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey on the 27th, 28th and 29th of October at the 16th Annual Chiller Theatre Expo along with Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), the enchanting Elvira, plus Adam West and Burt Ward of Batman fame. His book, Monster Mash, Half Dead In Hollywood is a tremendous read and tells Mr. Pickett's history from the time he was born through today. Bob tells the truth about Hollywood and the denizens that dwell there. As Mr. Pickett says...."They drag me out for one night a year.
