This episode of The Driven Women Project Podcast is not just for mothers—it's for any woman who has ever questioned society's definition of success. If you've ever felt pressure to conform to someone else's definition of success, this episode will reframe everything. In this episode, I sit down with Neha Ruch, the founder of Mother Untitled, a movement redefining the way we view stay-at-home motherhood. Neha's work has caught the attention of Oprah, Drew Barrymore, Kourtney Kardashian, Mandy Moore, and more, and her new book, The Power Pause, is changing the narrative around career breaks for women. We talk about:
Jen Saarbach spent nearly a decade rising from Associate to VP on Wall Street starting with Lehman Brothers in 2008, Barclays, and then Morgan Stanley, after which she decided to leave the finance world, only to recently return with a passion for democratizing access to Wall Street for everyone. She co-founded The Wall Street Skinny which is a phenomenal platform that quickly exploded on social media, and is now offering courses to help folks competitively prepare for a career on Wall Street. Jen and her co-founder, Kristen Kelly, host a podcast of the same name absolutely loaded with information that aims to demystify the world of finance. They explain jargon, talk with experts, and straight up teach listeners everything from “what is an investment bank” to portfolio management to private equity and hedge funds – they also tackle topics like what it's like to be a woman on wall street. This has been one of my favorite conversations to date. Jen is full of incredible insights and she gets straight to the point. This episode is packed full of tips and Jen is a fast talker so you will want to listen to this episode multiple times to make sure you catch all the gems. We talk about:Quality mentorshipHow women can sometimes be harder on other women than menHow to think about leaving behind a legacy you can be proud ofMake sure you listen to the end because Jen drops some advice about how to be your authentic self in an intense environment filled with pressure to perform. Their initial product called NasoClenz is on the market as the first intranasal antiseptic, perfect for those of us seeking nasal relief products. Dr. Lebovic told me she loves to pay attention to areas of the body that are neglected – like the nose. I tried NasoClenz, and let me tell you, it is the product I never knew I needed, and now I will not travel without it. You know how your nose gets dry on airplanes? Well this stuff was a dream. NasoClenz was also designed for patients with allergies, chronic sinus issues, CPAP users and more. She has served as director of several important clinical programs and is the Founder of the Society of Oncoplastic Surgery,Listen in to hear how Dr. Lebovic did all of this, including her take on being likable, and how she navigated being told in medical school that being a surgeon is not for women!Enjoy the show and Stay Driven!Meet Dr. Lebovic: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gaillebovic/Visit Dr. Lebovic's news blog here: https://svi-inc.com/news/ Nominate a Driven Woman:https://live.thedrivenwomenproject.com/nominateadrivenwoman Connect with Erin Smith directly: erin@drivenbeyondexcellence.comDownload Erin's free ebook: https://live.thedrivenwomenproject.com/ebook

Vasanta works at the intersection of healthcare and finance as an investment banker, and she is most passionate about investing in and advancing behavioral andwomen's health. She's also on the board at Sakhi – For South Asian Women. Sakhi is a New York City-based not-for-profit that represents South Asian survivors of gender-based violence. Vasanta is a frequent panelist or moderator at various healthcare conferences orwebinars and as an avid Princeton alumnus, she is a Co-Class Agent for herclass for Annual Giving and also serves on the National Annual Giving Committee. She also has many passions beyond advancing women's healthcare, she also lovescooking, has lots of house plants, loves arts and crafts and staying healthyand fit with Orange Theory. I'm excited to share this conversation I had withVasanta, because she is fiercely authentic and has developed an admirable setof core values that guide her. Which I think we can all learn from. If you take away one thing from this episode, letit be this: As a woman in a male dominated career, and an immigrant Vasanta isa shining example of how being different has the power to drive you to want to fit in, unless you decide that being different is awesome! Show highlights:Listen all the way through because there are a lot of gems that you wouldn't expect –for example Vasanta's path from majoring in Anthropology to wanting to be a food writer to becoming an investment banker. We also talk about the difference between how men and women build trust in the workplace, and how she dealt with men in her office who didn't understand her methods. How exhausting it is to not be yourself, and how it kills trust How following your passion leads you to figure out the “how” to make it happen.Knowing how to do something is not the driver, and not knowing how to do something wont stop you if you have a passion for it. If you don't have a passion, look for your super power. What are you really good at. We also talk about how you don't have to subscribe to the belief that competition is best. A rising tide lifts all boats. You can hear this advice but u don't have to agree with it just because lots of people say it, but listen as we talk about it and decide for yourself. It's mid-November and the holidays are right around the corner. As a solopreneur, you can go all-in on a Black Friday Sale, take time off or just hunker down and wait out the rest of the year because "nobody buys coaching or consulting services in Q4." Well, I don't believe that, for the record, and I will still be selling in December, along with enjoying friends and family time. But, there's one more thing I am doing to insure I start 2023 strong, and prepared for growth. In fact, I'm doing it right now, so I decided to record this episode and share it with you. I am referring to my business audit, or "clean sweep." In episode #131 I talked about the need to manage our boundaries with time, energy, effort, money, and relationships. Here's the handy checklist in case you missed it https://bit.ly/5typeschecklist. The business audit shows you how to free up money, time, and energy in a very practical way that will start to release stress and overwhelm you so you have more energy and enthusiasm for growth in the new year. There are 3 phases of the audit:List: identify where you are spending money and timeLeverage: assess the ROI and ROE (energy)Let Go: cancel, delete, put on hold to create space You may feel some emotions as you go through this process, I did, but once they had passed I felt lighter and more optimistic about the future and I believe you will too if you try this strategy. If you think this is going to challenge you, do the 3 steps on different days and do it with a biz bestie for accountability. If you complete this process, I'd love to hear from you. Let me know how much money & time you saved yourself each month by DM'ing me @coachdiannwingert on IG or Linked In. Spending time and money on things that are not serving you and your business is one of the most common ways female solopreneurs slow their growth, but there are several behaviors that also hold us back. I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that slow their success. Here's your invitation to take the quiz, and get specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about your particular challenge and more importantly, steps you can take to fix it. Summary The topic of boundaries has never been more important than it is now because entrepreneurs are burning out, and far too businesses aren't profitable. This straight-shooting solo episode will walk you through each of the five areas where you probably need to beef up your boundaries, how to know if you should, and the first step to take to find out. If you're thinking this is one more time-wasting task on your neverending To-Do list, think twice. These strategies are guaranteed to burnout-proof your business while boosting your bottom line. Host Notes One of the areas of business strategy I find most of my clients need help with is business boundaries, and often times they don't even realize it. Boundary problems may be the root cause when you find yourself working too much, making too little, and dealing with needy, demanding, or never-satisfied clients. Boundary problems are often to blame for working really hard but not moving forward, investing a ton in learning for your business but never having enough time to implement what you have learned. If any of this sounds familiar, this episode is for you. When we struggle with boundaries, we tend to feel resentful, frustrated and overwhelmed. We may think it's a time management issue or that we simply have too much to do and not enough support from others. The tendency to blame, whether ourselves or others is very tempting (I do it too, from time to time...) but nothing moves the needle like self-awareness and personal responsibility. This is truly empowering because when we recognize that we are part of the problem, we can then get busy creating a solution. And, in this episode, I am going to show you exactly how to get started. The 5 types of boundaries you need in your business are time, energy, money, people & effort. The place to start with each of them is to uncover where you are investing, spending, and wasting each of these resources. Behavior change is hard, and this episode is a big-picture overview. Pick one area and take the first step. Once you've made some progress, take another step or take the first step in another category. Every action we take that reduces our risk of burnout and increases our profit ratio improves the sustainability of our business and gives us more confidence in our entrepreneurial journey. Rather than buying yet another course or enrolling in yet another quick-fix program, take a look at where you can bolster your boundaries for free with these simple steps. Listening to this episode will give you the big-picture perspective on why you need better business boundaries, but to move the needle, you need to take action and for that, you need a roadmap. Click this link to get my PDF checklist “5 Types of Boundaries You Need in Your Business” with action steps for each area and links to free resources that will help you get started: https://bit.ly/5typeschecklistI am working on an audio course on the topic of boundaries for female solopreneurs, so stay tuned to be one of the first to hear about it when it's released. So, that's all for now, Driven Woman! Please join us next week for another amazing guest interview with Tara Newman, who is going to straighten out our money madness and steer us toward greater profit potential in our business.
Do you ever feel dissatisfied with the way things are in your world? Are you constantly striving for more while the people around you seem content with what they already have? Do you ever feel guilty that you're just not doing enough? Are you hyper-critical of yourself and believe that your results could always be improved? Well, what if I told you that instead of a personality flaw, those qualities represent the strength of your genes? You are uniquely wired to not only survive, but thrive, in an environment that never made it easy for you to succeed. Chances are, you are a DRIVEN. My guest today is Meghan Terwilliger: a former collegiate athlete, professional volleyball player, a mother of three and a coach for Driven. As an invaluable member of the Driven tribe, Meghan works with Dr. Doug Brackmann to provide content, guidance and retreats for "Driven" individuals.
Of all the things we need to learn how to master as a coach or consultant is expectation management. It is more important than your niche, your offers, your marketing, price point, packaging our expertise or what social media platforms to spend our time on. You can't fully rely on your potential client to know what they expect from hiring you, either. You have to get ahead of the conversation by asking questions that reveal their unconscious beliefs and desires because those are the ones they will judge you by. Something I have come to understand is how often clients are looking for a Magic Pill and have zero self awareness that this is even the case. A Magic Pill is the belief that there will be a perfect solution to whatever we are struggling with, and they just keep trying different things until they find it. Sometimes we unwittingly participate in this search for a Magic Pill by the way we market our services and sell our programs by over stating the benefits. Change is hard and requires that we change our beliefs and our identity, not just our behavior. We all want solutions that are easy, fast and effortless, but meaningful and lasting change almost never is. In this no-BS solo episode, we are going to dismantle the myth of the Magic Pill, so we can offer our potential clients genuine value, and no-BS offers, not hype. Highlights of this episode: What is a Magic Pill and why are so many of us looking for one? How coaches and consultants are selling Magic Pills without realizing it What we can learn from the weight loss industry about human nature Alternatives to Magic Pill thinking Being in the right room & leaving when it's time to move on Watching for opportunities to be an early adopter Being willing to experiment and fail Being willing to tolerate discomfort Recognize what people really want: guidance, support & accountability Even if you aren't desperately seeking magic pills, you may have habits in your business that cost you income, profit, and success. I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that hold them back. The world of work has experienced some pretty seismic changes in the past couple of years, leading up to three interrelated trends: the great resignation, the rise of solopreneurship, and quiet quitting. Productivity and employee engagement are down, way down and companies of all sizes can't fill open positions or get the best out of the employees they have now. I first heard about quiet quitting on TikTok, and it really made me think about my own work history, and the challenges being faced by the five different generations that currently make up the workforce. If you are not familiar with the term, quiet quitting refers to doing only what is necessary at work, something my generation called “coasting.” A quiet quitter is not necessarily on their way out the door, but they are maintaining firm boundaries around their work hours and effort in order to maintain a better work-life balance. No after-hours checking of emails, no attending the company picnic, and no “going above and beyond” to gain favor from the higher-ups. What I find interesting in quiet quitting is the intention, not the behavior, because it can very easily be misconstrued. So is quiet quitting passive-aggressive, a precursor or sign of burnout, or an exit strategy, and what can we as solopreneurs learn from it? Highlights of this episode:Changes in the work culture due to the pandemicHow different generations view and respond to work expectations Quiet quitting and hustle cultureCorporate culture, outliers, and superstars The what, when, and why of quiet quitting for solopreneursMentioned in this episode:“The Cure for Imposter Syndrome” https://bit.ly/3AnPBWeKim Kardashian clip https://bit.ly/3Cw1rjfThe Real Cost of Hustle Culture: https://bit.ly/3Cw3nbvEven if you aren't a quiet quitter, you may have habits in your business that cost you income, profit, and success. Why am I pulling back the curtain on my own failed launch (while marketing myself as a business strategist, coach, and consultant?) And, why do it immediately after it happened? I must admit I had a lot of reservations about both the content and the timing, but one of my core values is integrity and for me, that means telling the whole truth about solopreneurship, the cringe-worthy as well as the brag-worthy. I also knew if I didn't share it now, I would miss the true value of sharing our failures- giving shame the middle finger. If you are a solopreneur, you have to become comfortable with risk and failure. You need to try things without knowing how they will turn out, ask people to hire you even if you have imposter issues, make offers before you feel ready to do so and some of your programs, products, and services will fail. You are literally where the buck starts and stops, so getting better at dealing with failure is truly unavoidable. In this, my most vulnerable episode so far, I share the reasons that the recent launch of my new small group coaching program failed, what I learned from the experience, and what I am going to do next, because in business, as in theater, the show must go on! Highlights of this episode:How to manage our expectations Using your core values as a filter for decision making Toxic productivity & trauma patterns in business Letting yourself down vs letting others down Pushing through or pulling back - is it self-sabotage or self-care?My experience in a coaching program where the leader modeled “no failure” Is it even a failure if you pull the plug? Have you ever heard the term “boss up?” I started using it with my one-to-one coaching clients about a year ago, at times when they needed and wanted to change their mindset and take new actions. Usually, this happened because they had plateaued, believed they were stagnating, or just felt stuck and were ready to do whatever it took to move beyond it. I had been trying to decide on a name for the signature framework I spent months creating (with the help of a consultant I've mentioned on this podcast, Claudia Schalkx.) I looked up the term “boss up” and recognized instantly that it was the perfect name for my framework. Here's the Urban Dictionary definition of boss up: “take ownership of one's life, by directing the full capacity of time, resources, and attention toward a specific direction, goal, or intent. In other words: step up, raise your standard, up your game, and take responsibility for the direction of your life and the full maturity of your dreams.” Just substitute business for life and you will see what this program is all about. We opened the doors for sign-ups for the very first cohort of Boss Up Breakthrough yesterday and I wanted to let you know who it's for, how to know if you are ready, and invite you to join us. How we set ourselves up for problems in business:Thinking of yourself as a visionary in need of an implementor Business partnerships that are not real partnerships Letting our clients determine our offers, becoming a “beck & call girl”The risk of becoming a “Silly Putty Person” by following the herd Starting a business to avoid having a boss vs wanting to be the bossFocusing on passion & purpose, while forgetting about profit When it is time to get help to boss up:We have no clue what's actually working and what isn't We bought into the 6 or 7 figure propaganda instead of right-sizing our bizOur boundaries are lacking, weak or not being honored Our values are in conflict with our business model We prioritize avoiding discomfort & end up not getting what we want/need If you are ready for a Boss Up Breakthrough in your business? If you are like most of us, you jumped into your online business with nothing more than the intense desire to BYOB ( Be Your Own Boss, that is…) and put your faith in the celebrity coaches and online gurus to show you the way. Now you are a few years into it, working too many hours, making too little money, and feeling super stressed about how to get anything else done in the rest of your life. It's time to do a reality check, climb out from under our sunk cost and shame and forgive ourselves, so we can get busy right-sizing our business. None of those gurus is living your life, paying your bills, or coping with your problems so you are the expert on how your business should actually look and how to make it fit your life, instead of taking over your life. You can right-size your business, no matter how long you have been in it, by asking yourself some important questions and making the changes that align with your honest answers. Things to Consider to Right-Size Your Business:How many hours a week can you devote to your business? How soon do you need revenue & profit to keep your boat afloat? What are your financial needs and cash flow comfort zone? What is your end game for this business? What level of intimacy & contact do you want with your clients? How much time (or money) can you devote to marketing? What is your capacity to sustain all this without burning out (energy, bandwidth)? There is no one “right-size” business for everybody because each of us has a different life, responsibilities, challenges, and priorities. Your business can change as your stage of life and opportunities change, so don't shoehorn yourself into anyone else's version of a dream business. You don't “have to” do anything unless it's right and sustainable for you. Did you recognize yourself in any of the ways I talked about in this episode? So many of my clients knew they were struggling and suspected they were holding themselves back in their business when they hired me, and one of the first things we did was to assess their mindset and habits. If you have been a regular listener, you know that I am obsessed with helping female solopreneurs gain confidence and courage so they can pursue and achieve their goals and dreams. One of the most common scenarios I encounter with my business strategy and coaching clients the fear of hearing the word “no. I have been interviewed on the topic of entrepreneurship and rejection sensitivity on several other podcasts, so I know this is a pretty widespread struggle. There are a number of ways we unconsciously resist hearing no that actually limit our income, profit, and success in business. Behaviors such as never raising our prices, asking a team member to learn something new, and avoiding creating new offers are a few. Many of us go so far out of our way to avoid being rejected that we basically reject the chance of being found, hired, and paid. Or, we just don't ask for the sale, avoid using a Call to Action in our marketing, and “forget” to follow up with prospects. With everything I am learning about confidence, failure, and resiliency, I have come to the conclusion that getting better at dealing with “no” is a skill that all of us need to get better at. Think of it this way: we either need to learn how to deal more effectively with “no” or get used to settling for less than we truly want. The main issue is what we make it mean when we hear no, especially for those who are shy, introverted, highly creative, socially anxious, and who experience rejection sensitivity, but the good news is that getting better at hearing no is a skill that anyone can learn. I share several strategies that have been helpful to my clients and also to myself, including one I adapted from my experiences as a psychotherapist, including:Upping the ante on your “no” Role-playing with your biz bestieQuestioning the “no” Asking for things you don't really want/need Also mentioned in this episode: “Go for No” by Richard Fenton and Andrea Waltz https://amzn.to/3vjEtaZDid you recognize yourself in any of the ways I talked about in this episode? In this value-packed solo episode, I share my perspective on a word that is totally overutilized in the coaching industry: AUTHENTICITY; and why I think what is being taught by many is actually manipulative AF and anything but authentic. My definition of authenticity involves true vulnerability, courage, and risk-taking and is strategic, not tactical. IMHO, authenticity is your unfair advantage, but there is more to it than that. What else can contribute to your unfair advantage?Education, training, certifications Experience and expertise, paid, volunteer and apprenticeLife lessons, personal development, and even post-traumatic growth Gifts, talents, and obstacles you've overcome Acknowledging forms of privilegeThe more authentic I have become, the more I have been learning to unmask myself and share who I am, and the more I understand that I'm not the only one who feels like a square peg in a round hole. Sharing more of myself has helped me connect with others who have paid a high price for conforming to the norm and made them lose themselves in the process. But, authenticity as your unfair advantage does not mean sharing everything with everybody indiscriminately, either. What you share with the public, with your audience, and with your clients can, and probably should differ and authenticity never involves breaching trust or exposing information involving others when you have not requested consent. Also mentioned in this episode: Helen Polise The Tik Tok Teacher, Episode #114 https://bit.ly/3Io2HWUHeather Zeitzwolfe, Episode # 84 https://bit.ly/3pJDCwTCoach Pam Peterson, Episode #110 https://bit.ly/3mpca6iIf you find yourself thinking “I have no idea how to be authentic in my business” or “unfair advantage? If you are a coach, consultant or other professional service providers, I don't have to tell you how frustrating it is to be on a sales call with someone who is not a legitimate prospect and believe me, it feels bad for them too. When you are just getting started, you may choose to work with almost anyone who is able and willing to hire you, but once you are established, and find yourself in the enviable position of having a waiting list or being able to hand pick your clients, you need a system. Having a screening or application process in place allows you to focus on identifying and serving only those clients that have the motivation, expectations, and resources to benefit from working with you, who will achieve amazing outcomes, and who will happily sing your praises, all of which helps keep your pipeline full. We have all heard that you need to attract your ideal clients and repel everyone else, but how do you do this in a practical and efficient way? One of the strategies I have developed in order to make sure I am getting in front of the right people, for the right reason at the right time is my consultation process and the language I use and the questions I ask of anyone scheduling a consultation with me. I use Calendly, but you can apply the same process to Acuity, Schedule Once or any other online scheduler. In this value-packed solo episode, I walk you through my exact system and how it benefits both me and the prospective client, even if we decide not to work together. What to call it & why: consultation, interview, application, discovery call How it creates value for your ideal client & deters those who will never hire you The 5 questions you simply must ask (and what happens if you don't) Uncommon advice on your availability and appointment reminders Also mentioned in this episode: Claudia Schalkx, marketing consultant https://bridge2more.com/If you find yourself thinking “I never thought about screening my prospects like this,” I've got a lot more expert guidance to share with you. If you are a woman who has started her own business, I don't have to tell you that you face quite a few challenges. You have to know why you're in business, your goals and obstacles, and what's working and what isn't working. You also need to know how to ask for the money, how much money to ask for, and how to feel good about asking for it.In other words, even in the most simple, solopreneur business: coaching, consulting or professional services, you need to know your why, what you are trying to achieve, your advantages and disadvantages, and what aspects of your business are actually driving your success and which ones are inhibiting or delaying it. Our relationship with money is the other elephant in the room, and a surprising number of women have trouble with establishing their prices, selling, and accepting payment. With all these challenges, the majority of us dive head first into consuming content about business, hoping it will make the daunting task of decision-making easier or more comfortable. There is nothing wrong with seeking advice, consulting or coaching, but the risk of following others, either too many experts or over-reliance on a so-called “expert” is you may very well end up with a business you hate. As hard as it is to admit, you would not be alone if you ever said or thought this. In fact, there is a growing number of women who have hit the wall in their business and don't know what to do. If you are anything like me, you have a tendency to procrastinate. You procrastinate on the trivial, but also on things that are important to you and when you do, it can create a lot of seriously negative consequences. You might even think of yourself as a “procrastinator” (something I do not recommend, and talk about why, in this episode.) I believe that everyone procrastinates on some tasks, some of the time, but it's just too easy to dump all those times when you said you would do something and you aren't doing on the procrastination pile. But, what if it isn't “just” procrastination? What if it's resistance, avoidance, imposter complex, resentment, or even your intuition pointing you in a different direction? Sometimes, labeling our behavior as “just” procrastination doesn't go deep enough to identify the real issue. When this is the case, treating it as procrastination isn't going to work, or worse, get you even deeper into something that isn't right for you. There are times when we need to push ourselves and “just do it” and other times we need a completely different approach. In this solo episode, we explore the different scenarios that we might incorrectly label as “just procrastination” that really aren't, what is actually going on, and what to do about it. Discussed in this episode: How to identify when it's “just procrastination” and when it's something more The hidden emotion that pretends to be procrastination Uncovering intuition in your business through Radical Self Acceptance Why knowing your personal and business values leads to better decisionsWhat questions to ask yourself to to get unstuck and create confidence I have struggled with procrastination for most of my life, even as a high achieving and highly educated individual, until I learned that what appears to be “just procrastination” isn't always so. Learning that what I was labeling 'just procrastination" when it was something else helped me solve the real problem. If you are struggling with procrastination, maybe it's because you are trying to do something that is not aligned with your values, which creates resistance. The good news is you can get crystal clear on your top 5 values and use them to make better decisions in your business and life. Wanna know how? One of the topics I am asked for my opinion on most often is the confusion between therapy and coaching. I guess you could say I am uniquely qualified to address this topic because before I trained and certified as a coach, I was a licensed psychotherapist for over twenty years. It has become a complicated, contradictory and at times controversial subject and one that a growing number of people are talking about. After being asked this question in a number of interviews on other podcasts, I decided it was time to discuss it on The Driven Woman. The point here is not that therapists are better, safer, or more competent across the board. I know many fine coaches who do excellent work and hold themselves to standards of integrity and ethics that equal those of any licensed therapist. I have also known a number of therapists who were mediocre at best. In this episode, I hope to raise awareness, stimulate some thinking, and most of all, encourage people to trust their intuition and do their homework. In this episode, I make the offer to personally respond to anyone who has a follow-up question on this subject after listening to the full episode. The options are: DM me at IG @coachdiannwingert or email me at diann@diannwingertcoaching.com. Discussed in this episode: How do therapists and coaches differ in terms of their credentials: training, licensing, certification, and regulation The connection between the medical model and mental health stigma Unsung heroes: bartenders, personal trainers, massage therapists, and hair stylistsThe big issues: boundaries, confidentiality, privacy, dual relationships Insight and healing or growth and goal achievementShould you work with both a therapist and a coach at the same time? Everyone has heard of FOMO, but have you also heard of FUD? I hadn't either, until a recent conversation with my son Andre on the topic of bitcoin. FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt and I am going to guess that these emotions are something you are more than familiar with, especially during these last couple of years. Once I heard the term and learned its history, I actually scrapped the podcast I was planning to create for this week and recorded this one instead. I hope you agree that it is both timely and relevant. The acronym FUD was coined in 1975, but variations of it have been used back to the 1920s and even in the late 1860s. It is a propaganda tactic used in politics, polling, public relations, sales and marketing, and inside cults. FUD involves disseminating negative and false, misleading, or dubious information with the purpose of evoking fear. That fear is intended to manipulate people into remaining loyal party members, clients, or customers by highlighting the perceived risk of exploring alternatives. From fake and conspiracy theories to the sleazy tactics of ‘bro' marketing, examples of FUD in modern culture are too numerous to count. In this episode, I will share: Why trust is at an all-time low and how it affects us as business owners The cult-like FUD tactics of many coaching programs and nearly all MLMs How unconscious FUD programming affects both buyers and sellersReflections on my past careers in sales and psychotherapy through a FUD lensWhat to look for in your own business practices that might be a little bit FUD-ishIs there a gap between where you are and where you want to be? This is the fourth and final episode in The Boundaries Series, and this one is called “Boundaries as Self Care”. Many solopreneurs were superstars in their former jobs and many of us came to self-employment with ingrained habits of overworking including taking work home, skipping vacations, and even going to work when we were sick, instead of taking our company PTO. Women are not conditioned to put their needs first, so when we become solopreneurs, we often end up over extended, overworking, and overwhelmed between the needs of our families and the needs of our business. In this episode, we are going to talk about boundaries as self-care. Here is some of what you will hear in this episode: Boundaries start with self-awareness and self acceptanceHabits we developed in the corporate world that set us up for burnout You are your own Human Resources DepartmentWhy you can't succeed with advice from celebrity coaches & online gurusEntrepreneurs and mental health challenges If you are your own boss, be a good boss to yourself and structure your business with boundaries and self-care in mind. Not only will you reduce the risk of burnout, but you will also be a more successful and satisfied business owner. Unless burnout is part of your business plan, we need to make self-care a priority. Things to consider in establishing your self-care boundaries:Workdays & hoursTime off for vacations, holidays, conferences Deadlines & turn around time Size of team & communication stylesRevenue goals, price point, and profit margin I encourage you to listen to EP #95: Creating Consistent Client Outcomes, EP #97 Obligation Management, and EP #99 The Distraction-Free Business. Don't be surprised if you find yourself talking back to my tough-love approach in these Boundaries Series episodes. I had to learn these lessons the hard way myself and they do tend to need some repetition to take hold. Is there a gap between where you are and where you want to be? Do you know why? This is the third in The Boundaries Series of solo episodes, and this one is called How to Create a Distraction-Free Business. Spoiler alert: it comes down to self-awareness, self-acceptance, and having decent boundaries. Most female solopreneurs are working from home, with one or more other beings in their space. Knowing how to manage our distractions and how we use distractions to avoid other uncomfortable feelings like resentment and self-doubt are half the battle to being productive from home. If you are a work-from-home solopreneur in a service-based business, I encourage you to go back and listen to the previous episodes in this Boundaries Series: EP #95: Creating Consistent Client Outcomes and EP #97 Obligation Management. Here is some of what you will hear in this episode: Tools for Self Awareness when it comes to distractions:Know your limits Environmental engineeringClutter and distractibilityDistractions vs interruptions Circadian rhythms Decision Fatigue Other People's Problems Boredom threshold Mindset Your competitionDigital information / FOMO Imposter syndrome, self-doubt, perfectionism Strategies mentioned in this episode:Time tracking Time blocking Focus Mate Pomodoro Technique Is there a gap between where you are and where you want to be? Make sure you are following the show so you won't miss it!
This episode is the second in The Boundaries Series, where we are unpacking the challenge of doing things we don't really want to be doing, and for all the wrong reasons. Warning: If you have not already heard me say this, I have fully embraced the feedback that one of my favorite clients by calling me “The Speaker of Uncomfortable Truths.” This episode reflects that. In my work with female solopreneurs, I often hear about situations my clients are involved in but wish they weren't. Sometimes, the situation involves a team member or a client, but it can also be with someone they collaborate with. The underlying issue is related to boundaries and specifically how we deal with feeling obligated, based on the principle of reciprocity. The bottom line is that each of us has limits when it comes to our capacity and if we are spending time, energy, effort, and dollars doing things out of a sense of obligation, rather than choice, we will feel strained and drained, not to mention resentful. If you are a creative or a healer, in particular, this will drag you toward burnout and possibly clinical depression. Time management is important, energy management is important, but obligation management is also necessary, so let's get to it. Here is a quick overview of what we are going to cover in today's solo episode: Why resentment is the emotion we need to pay attention to in businessThe connection between bandwidth, boundaries, and burnout Reciprocity is the exchange of mutual benefit. Learn to measure the mutual part. Know why you are saying yes to the things you are saying yes to Lessons from Buddhism that help me deal with difficult people Shout outs in this episode:Cait Donovan and Fried, the Burnout Podcast Simon Sinek Start with WhyWith 20+ years of experience as a psychotherapist and 5+ years as a coach, I rarely meet a solopreneur who wouldn't benefit from some expert guidance in this area. Today's solo episode tackles the problem of saying “yes” to clients you probably should say “no” to and why, and how to both create predictable outcomes and avoid both negative ones and surprises. Creating a specific way of working with people and sticking to it, instead of trying to help everyone you think you should, or believe you can spare you countless heartaches. The truth is that you really can't help everybody. None of us can. Your personal values may include being flexible, adaptable, and accommodating, but this can get you into some real hot water in your business. This is not a matter of experience or expertise, or how long you've been in the business, it's about the slippery slope of unmet expectations and human nature. This episode is the first in The Boundaries Series, where we will be exploring a number of things that we do that limit our success because we have weak-ass boundaries and don't even know it. Spoiler alert: the way I look at and talk about boundaries is guaranteed to open your eyes to all kinds of things you probably aren't even thinking about, in addition to the boundary nonsenses you already know you're dealing with. Here is a quick overview of what we are going to cover in today's solo episode: The Default Yes is a major blindspot we can't afford to keep ignoring Pink Flags to look for when deciding who to work with A Signature System helps you create predictably good outcomes How to improve your practices to ensure satisfied clients Mentioned in this episode:Bridge2More marketing consultant Claudia Schalkx https://bit.ly/3LGPw4NWhat's Holding You Back Quiz https://bit.ly/obstaclesquizWith 20+ years of experience as a psychotherapist and 5+ years as a coach, I rarely meet a solopreneur who wouldn't benefit from some expert guidance in this area. Hello beautiful souls!Welcome to another episode of the Scarred But Not Damaged Podcast...Today we have an interesting topic: The Purpose Driven Woman. Hmmm.... what does that even mea?. Coach Olu will be dissecting all that in a minute.
When you are a highly educated professional woman who knows she is capable of so much more than you are demonstrating in your career and personal life, it can be tough to figure out where the real problem lies. Is it your motivation, your expectations, your habits, your mindset, or a combination of all of the above, and how do you figure it out? Luckily for my client, Dallas, one of her friends had worked with me and told her what a great experience she had, and then she listened to a few episodes of this podcast and thought, “this might be just what I need.” There is a hilarious ‘blooper” during this episode that demonstrates why radical self-acceptance is one of the core principles I practice and teach. You will see why if you stick with the episode all the way to the end. We talk about why she decided to work with me, what we focused on and how it has transformed her thinking about money, being a lawyer, and allowed her to reach her billing goals without so much stress and beating up on herself. It was not a perfect and predictable path and at one point, Dallas felt like she had lost sense of where we were going, so we talk about how we resolved that. Here are the highlights of this conversation:The performance gap between our productivity and our potential Toxic productivity and its alternative How to practice radical self-acceptance one day at a timeRight now goals vs legacy goals Pain, suffering, and unnecessary suffering This episode's Mic Drop Moment: “ I learned to stop selling from a hypothetical pocketbook.” (Dallas) Are you feeling the frustration of knowing you are capable of so much more but don't know how to close your performance gap? The more experienced I become as a business coach, the more convinced I am that the secret to success is understanding how the human brain works and how to outsmart it. Our brains do not care if we are happy, fulfilled, or reaching our potential. They are giving themselves an A+ if we are still alive, because that is actually our brain's job description. Being successful requires that you use your mind to bypass the brain's default programming and in this episode, I am going to share with you a couple of hacks for how to do it. Here are just a few of the highlights: Thoughts about what we are capable of are learned and can be unlearned.Beliefs are just thoughts we have a lot of experience thinking. Your brain is a lazy mofo that burns a lot of calories defending the status quo Imposter complex, self-sabotage, and limiting beliefs are autopilot settingsHow to think like your success has already happened, making it inevitable Want a double dose of this life-changing wisdom about how your brain actually works? I am excited to introduce you to today's guest on The Driven Woman; fellow podcaster, non-sleazy sales consultant, and all-around genius-for-brains, my biz buddy, Annie P Ruggles. We met online, hit it off automagically because of our mutual interest in the intersection of feminism, mental health, and entrepreneurship. Annie is a magician in helping female entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, and service business owners be more successful on their own terms by teaching them how to sell with integrity. If you have ever struggled to ask for the business, ask for the money, or raise your prices, you are definitely going to want to listen to this one. Anniepreneur is an open book when it comes to talking about mental health, being an empath, and the fact that being self-employed is an amazing lifestyle, but it's also just plain hard. Most women have a hard time asking for what they want, need, and deserve and I love talking with other coaches and consultants who are as committed as I am to helping other women get paid. This episode is a bit more conversational because Annie and I have an ongoing friendship and have even shared a room at the recent She Podcasts Live conference for female and nonbinary podcasters. She is super smart, very generous with her expertise and her network, and is truly one of the most original and brilliant people I know. We cover a lot of territory, and you definitely want to listen for these mic drop moments:Overdelivering is not a victimless crime.Assholes don't get imposter syndrome. One of the topics I am asked to speak about the most, whether it is as a speaker, podcast guest, or with my own coaching clients is boundaries. The subject of boundaries comes up so often because it might seem simple, but is actually quite complicated. There is no cookie-cutter, one size fits all solution. Boundaries are culturally determined, affected by our personalities, temperaments, stage of life, mental health, personal preferences, and whether or not we have a trauma history. See what I mean about being complicated? In this week's solo episode, I am going to open up the topic of boundaries (we will have a few more episodes where we will dig deeper into various aspects of the subject…) by reflecting on the differences I observed visiting the homes of various friends as I was growing up in S. California from the families whose kids didn't even have bedroom doors to those where the parents could not enter without the child's permission and everything in between. Here are the episode's highlights: How to set boundaries like a boss if you don't own a business The emotion that signals a boundary violation Boundaries while working from homeBoundaries are about access and expectationsHow to calibrate your boundaries to your bandwidth Could you use some serious help with boundaries in your business and life? With 20+ years experience as a psychotherapist and 5+ years as a coach, I've never met a solopreneur, coach, or consultant who couldn't use a boundary boost. Do you feel like you were born to stand out but fitting in feels safer? Have you ever made a decision based on what someone else wanted or expected from you, rather than making that decision based on what you wanted for yourself? As you grow your business, do you find yourself trying to mimic the look/feel/services of the experts you perceive as further along than you? If any of the above resonates, know you aren't alone; in fact there's a biological reason that you feel drawn to the safety of others. In Episode 51 of The Lean Out Your Business podcast, Diann Wingert, a no-BS therapist turned business mindset coach, shares why we are biologically inclined to fit in and digs deeper into the limiting beliefs that keep us playing small. If you are ready to stop seeking permission from others to be who you already are, you won't want to miss this interview. Diann Wingert is an expert on the intersection of mental health and entrepreneurship and her jam is helping other women transform the beliefs and habits that hold them back from reaching their most important goals. In Episode 51 of the Lean Out Your Business Podcast, Host, Crista Grasso and Diann discuss: 2:50 the mindset issue that keeps people from wanting to stand out 3:50 what imposter syndrome really is 9:25 why we need to claim our own expertise before others do 10:10 the reasons why women do not sell themselves and their businesses 13:20 why follow the leader is a fun children's game but not a great business strategy 16:25 what it means to give yourself permission to approve of yourself 20:20 realizing that you are not responsible for other people's feelings 23:10 the 4 limiting beliefs that most frequently convince us to play small 24:55 what it means to think like an entrepreneur 28:10 failure has nothing to do with you 32:05 when coaching is better than therapy Want more time with Diann? I think it's really important as women and business owners that we understand how our culture has conditioned us to have certain beliefs, expectations, habits, and behaviors that interfere with our ability to achieve our goals and be successful. Most of us don't even realize all the things that we are doing that fall into the category of people-pleasing and that they are killing our profits. I'm willing to risk offending or annoying some of you because I think for those that are ready to hear the unvarnished truth and do something about it, you will be able to maximize your profits without even hiring me. We will cover a handful of obvious (and not so obvious) ways we leave money on the table, limit our income, impose our own internal glass ceiling, and take a pay cut in our business. We are going to dig into money mindset, imposter complex, avoiding the ask, pricing, discounts, bartering, raising your fees, and avoiding dealing with employees and contractors that are messing up your bottom line. We also confront some of the more insidious (aka sneaky unconscious beliefs so many of us have, such as beliefs about money and greed, getting paid for our talents, and whether or not it's selfish to make money for something you enjoy doing, Like all of my solo episodes, this one is a cross between a kick in the ass and a warm hug. Hey, you don't need me to flatter you, blow smoke up your skirt or polish your pinkies. My specialty is being the Speaker of Uncomfortable Truths because I want you to succeed. If you are serious about making a living while making a difference, you need to pay attention to the unconscious habits that get in your way, and most of all, what you can do instead. I am here to give you the straight talk, with a dash of sass! I often say that human beings only have two problems: We are always thinking and we always believe ourselves. While this may sound sarcastic (and it probably is) the underlying truth is that for many of us, our thoughts are just as much the source of our suffering as our actual circumstances. That's not to say our circumstances might not need some changing, but plenty of us have everything we need to be healthy, happy, successful, and fulfilled and we aren't, because of our stinking thinking. Over the course of the last few solo episodes, I have been talking about confidence, negative self-talk, and questioning your fear. Today's solo episode is the next topic in the mindset series, how to actually begin to change your brain by changing your mind. I have been doing this mindset work for a number of years, starting with taking classes in meditation and mindfulness center, where I initially went seeking help from chronic pain. What I discovered over time is that mindfulness, meditation, cognitive therapy, and personal growth work all create transformation at the level of the mind and that unless we change our minds, we won't find lasting results from changing other aspects of our lives (jobs, relationships, hair color….) What we will cover in this episode:The pressure to conform to the normThe nature of what we call ‘reality” Sleepwalking through life And, the three levels we progress through that allow us to transform our minds, one thought at a timeFreebie AlertIn order to transform the unconscious, habitual thoughts into ones that serve us, grab your copy of the handout that accompanies this episode:Change Your Mind One Thought at a TimeReady to Make a Serious Upgrade? If getting back into momentum & moving the needle in your business and life is how you want to start your 2022, Click here to schedule a free 30-minute consultation to see if my signature 12-week 1:1 coaching program is right for you. https://calendly.com/diannwingert/free-consultation/If you are the kind of entrepreneur who learns as much from others as you do when you and your business are the sole focus, my group coaching program is starting again soon and the first step is to get on the waitlist!
