Coming out later in life–embracing your LGBTQ+ identity at an older age

Airtalk

Most coming out stories, in books, in movies, in life, happen when the person is a teen or young adult. Adolescence and youth are defined as times to explore, take risks, discover who you are. But people can come out at any age. People can "discover" who they are after decades of living as someone else. Identity is not on a set timeline. And for those who come out as LGBTQ+ later in their lives, the liberation can come with some unique challenges. Today on AirTalk, we're highlighting later-in-life coming out stories. We'll talk to John Sovec, an LGBTQ affirming therapist and author of “Out: A Parent's Guide to Supporting Your LGBTQIA+ Kid Through Coming Out and Beyond”, about why some people may wait until they are older to come out and how they might come to terms with their identity. If you came out as LGBTQ+ at an older age, we'd like to hear from you! How did you realize you were ready to come out? How did you come out to your partner or children? Give us a call at 866-893-5722. Or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

We're continuing our weeklong love series with a look at the relationship between sex and love. The two are often viewed as separate aspects of the human experience, however, in a relationship the two are very much interconnected. Differences in the importance of sex in addition to differences in sexual desire are reported to be one of the most common reasons couples seek therapy. Joining us to discuss are Emily Nagoski, a Kinsey-educated sex educator and author of "COME TOGETHER: The Science (and Art!) of Creating Lasting Sexual Connections,” and John Sovec, a queer therapist and coach who specializes in working with the LGBTQIA+ community to assist people in creating sex positive and affirming relationships for themselves and their partners.

Today I'm delighted to be bringing to the show a conversation about supporting LGBTQIA+ kids, and I have the perfect guest to explore this topic with, John Sovec, a therapist, author, and nationally recognized expert on creating affirmative support for LGBTQIA+ teens and their families during the coming out process. I wanted to talk with John because these conversations are becoming increasingly prevalent within our neurodivergent communities. During our conversation, John explained what “coming out” means and why it's such a significant and ongoing event for any LGBTQIA+ person. He also shared his thoughts on the high correlation between neurodivergence and gender nonconformity, how parents can best respond when their child comes out to them, why affirmation is more important than acceptance, and why it's so important that parents honor their own process as they navigate understanding their child's identity. About John SovecJohn Sovec, MA, LMFT is a nationally recognized expert on creating affirmative support for LGBTQIA+ teens and their families during the coming out process. The holidays are here and they can be fun, festive, and happy but also stressful, frustrating and sad. There can be a lot of pressure and endless to-do lists that rob us of the joy of the season. Fortunately there are ways to shift things to a more positive experience. Mighty Parenting host Sandy Fowler discusses these shifts with John Sovec. John lends insights into how we end up stressed and unhappy. Then he's talks about how you can reduce holiday stress for yourself and your family while creating a holiday to remember.  Our Guest: John Sovec  Detailed Show Notes and Support at MightyParenting.com episode 204 DISCLAIMER: THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS WHICH REWARD ME MONETARILY OR OTHERWISE WHEN YOU USE THEM TO MAKE PURCHASES. You can:    1. Be intentional   2. Set boundaries   3. Make a usage schedule for yourself Then talk to your child about how they can do the same. Have a conversation about what would work for them and things they can do to support themselves in developing those habits. And if you want amazing support in helping your child develop those healthy habits, get a Troomi phone so you can set up appropriate access to everything on the phone right in the parent portal. Troomi lets you guide your child in learning to use smartphones is a safe and healthy way with plans that grow with your child.  You can learn more at troomi.com and use the code MIGHTYPARENTING to get half off a phone through November 30th ($50 off after that). I am very excited to welcome John Sovec back to the podcast to celebrate Pride Month with all of us. I coulnd't have had a better guest. This is an important episode, I want to become a better ally and help with awareness so others can become better allies too. If you find value in what John and I are talking about, please share it with your family and friends. Because if you find value in it, they will too ❤️John is  therapist, coach and counselor and also a nationally recognized expert on the coming out process for LGBT teens. He works with both teens and their families to ease the experience and open up channels for communication and understanding. So who better to have on to learn how we can move from chaos to peace to becoming better allys to the LGBTQ+ community around us. We talk aboutwhat Pride Month means to John personallythe June 1969 riots at New York City's Stonewall Inn where Pride Month startedHow we non-queer people can be a better allyJohn gives us words that we can say to take a stand for our LGBTQ friends and neighboursWhat the most supportive way is to react to someone coming out to usWhat to say and do and what NOT to say and do if we think we know someone who hasn't come out yet, even if it's your own child. Also don't miss the little side-note John brought up around 31 minutes in about what it actually means when someone tells you they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. Because it doesn't just mean you know now their sexual orientation,  there is so much more to this! You find the full show notes and all the links of the things we talked about at https://connygraf.com/podcast/76Connect with me on Instagram orLike and Follow my Facebook PageJoin my supportive and free Facebook CommunitySchedule a Free Clutter Clarity CallCheck out my eBook From Chaos to Peace - A Simple Program to Clear your Clutter and Change your LIfePlease help me spread the word about my podcast by going to Apple Podcasts and write a review. If you are an entrepreneur, a creative person or an indie professional who needs to make offers, close sales, market their products or services and have a presence in the world of social media, I don't have to tell you that dealing with real or perceived rejection is one of the issues you need to gain mastery over in order to stay in business and make a living.  But, rejection sensitivity is not a disorder, a mental health diagnosis or illness.  It is also not a reason to hide your gifts from the world, work for free or barter yourself into business failure.  You can be both sensitive and successful and it is well worth learning to overcome your fears so you can make your difference in the world.  Our Pod Praise (podcast review) this week comes from Jerseyll who writes: “This is an amazing podcast packed full of actionable info you can put to use in your life right away. (0:00:00) Teaching Kids LiteracyFor young kids, learning to read can be about as fun as eating vegetables. New words, long sentences, and a lack of pictures can make the process intimidating. On top of that, now that most schools are out, motivating your little ones to practice reading can prove even more difficult. Reid DeSpiegelaere shares about Vello, a non-profit dedicated to setting up young children with 1-on-1 reading tutors.  (0:13:34) Tree Climbing Champion When you think of climbing trees, what images come to mind? Lazy summer afternoons? Kids scrambling around and swinging from tree branches? For professional arborists, tree climbing is an entirely different story. Jackson Chandler is an ISA-certified arborist and national tree-climbing champion. He owns and operates a tree-care company, "Arbor Ascent," and joins us to talk about the ISA tree-climbing competition, as well as give tips on how we can better care for our trees.  (0:32:26) COVID Aftermath: Should I Buy a Car? Buying a car has many implications, especially in today's world. How has the pandemic affected prices? Is now the right time to make such a big purchase? Jeff Schuster, president of America's Operations and Global Vehicle Forecasts at LMC Automotive answers any and all questions regarding buying a car post-COVID-19.  (0:52:24) Summer Catch-Up With school being held remotely over the last few months, many parents are worried about their kids being prepared and on track for the coming school year. Emily Bauman, an elementary school teacher and co-founder of Write On! gives tips on helping your kids practice reading and writing this summer in order to be ready for the fall.  (1:08:22) Music IsolationHave you discovered new music during quarantine? For some of us, music is the one thing tehtering us to reality and helping us keep perspective during this time. As you consider these past few months, how has music personally strengthened you and your family? Dr. Massimilano Frani, founder of Genote Lab, an app that uses music for stress and sleep management shares the benefits of music to relieve stress.  (1:28:50) Reconnecting with CommunityThe beauty of isolation is the value we recognize in relationships and community. As we see certain parts of the country re-open, our excitement for normalcy rises. We're excited to dine-in at local restaurants, go to the movie theatre, and even arrive to work in full business attire. But most of all, we are excited to see friends, family and acquaintances again. John Sovec shares how we can reconnect with our various communities, and how that will benefit our well-being.

True Hobbies (0:00:00)When we say the word “hobby”, we often think of leisure time devoted to casually doing something we love in our spare time. To some, this may be relaxing; to others, maybe not as much. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in using all our time as a means of achieving something, or even making a profit. This is great for feeling a sense of accomplishment or when you need extra money, but when it comes to time spent relaxing (and nothing else), how can we truly maximize our relaxation and not feel the need to be in a busy mindset? Joining us is Dr. Selin Malkoc, a behavioral scientist and marketing professor at Ohio State University. She's here to talk with us about how to really maximize our leisure time.  Kids Who Hate School (0:14:25)Now, it's normal to feel a sense of dread at the idea of getting the kids ready to go to school as a parent. But if your kids are having earth-shaking meltdowns every time you say “time for school!” there might be a problem. Sometimes, a kid who absolutely hates school with everything they have may be dealing with something more than just not wanting to get out of bed. With us to discuss what's really going on with our kids when they say they hate school is Dr. Michele Borba, educational psychologist and author.  Talking to Kids about Addiction (0:35:43)According to studies done by the Addiction Center, almost 21 million Americans above the age of 12 struggle with at least one addiction. Being such a difficult illness to deal with and discuss, addiction is an intimidating subject to talk about with our kids. However, according to therapist John Sovec in an article published by the Huffington Post, “Kids are much more savvy today, and open, honest conversations that take place now can set up the groundwork for keeping substances out of their future.” We've invited John on the show to share with us more about how to have these difficult, yet necessary conversations with our children.  Your 10 Words (0:50:33)What 3 words would you use to describe yourself? This may seem like an insignificant question, but the words you use to describe yourself are so important. Sometimes the words we choose don't tell people who we really are. But when our words are accurate, they could change the way other people see us and even how we see ourselves. Here to give us some tips on how to describe ourselves in 10 words and why it's so important is our friend Nick Boothman—communication expert and author of How to Get People to Like You in 90 Seconds or Less.  New Year's Food Resolutions (1:06:10)Many of us have resolved to eat better this year. We tell ourselves we're going to avoid that chocolate cake or can of soda. But 3 weeks into the New Year the question becomes, can I really keep this up for the next 350 days? If you find yourself asking this question, then you might have set a goal that's too lofty. To help us set more realistic food goals is Laura Silver, a registered dietitian-nutritionist from New York. She has a passion for helping people enjoy real, whole foods – without totally compromising on the foods they love.  Blood Donors Guide (1:23:32)Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, something that can't be manufactured but must be donated by a volunteer. While it's easy to feel that your one donation might not make a difference, it will. Winter is the hardest time for blood centers to collect due to cold-weather illnesses, so they need every donation that they can get. With January being national blood donor's month, we are all encouraged to roll up our sleeves and help save lives. Dr. Kathleen Grima is the Executive Medical Officer at the American Red Cross. She's going to tell us everything we need to know about donating blood.
