This was a pleasing Monday crossword, with a straightforward, amusing theme, and clues unlikely to generate too many BLANKSTARES. It was penned by Alex Eaton-Salners, who rarely does Monday crosswords — but when he does, he does them well, today's being a case in point.Besides the crossword, we've identified our JAMCOTWA™️ (Jean And Mike Crossword of The Week Award) winner, so if that's you, drop us a line and prepare to be inundated with the very finest in NE WI swag
Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman unpack the latest defensive maneuvers by centrist Democrats. The newly formed Promise to America coalition is scrambling to block progressive momentum following primary victories by politicians like Zohran Mamdani. Freezing rents and embracing class-based politics are proving highly popular but deeply threatening to the traditional party establishment. Shifting to the judicial branch reveals an equally turbulent landscape. A recent 6-3 Supreme Court decision just dismantled a 90-year precedent regarding the executive branch. The ruling allows the president to fire independent regulators at will while conveniently carving out a protective exemption for the Federal Reserve. This stark contrast exposes the underlying economic incentives shaping our current legal framework. Our co-hosts wrap up with a sobering look ahead at the nation's 250th anniversary. Decrepit conditions at the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool serve as a grim metaphor for an ongoing existential crisis. Rather than a grand celebration of independence, the crumbling infrastructure perfectly mirrors the current state of the American experiment.
Crumbling. Rat infested. Decrepit. Unsafe for human habitation. Perhaps not the words you would want to describe the official residence of Canada's leader-- but 24 Sussex Drive has been called it all. In fact, no Prime Minister has lived in the more than a century old mansion for a decade, after Justin Trudeau moved into Rideau Cottage on the grounds of Rideau Hall-- the home of the Governor General-- upon becoming Prime Minister in 2015. But now, Prime Minister Mark Carney wants to change that. He's started a fundraiser to pay for the renovations needed to make 24 Sussex habitable again-- though he insists no matter what, he'll never live in the more than 30-bedroom residence. Today on The Big Story, host Caryn Ceolin speaks with Paul Deegan, CEO of Deegan Public Strategies, about the plan, what he thinks it signifies for Canada, and whether or not Canadians can get behind the plan. We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. You can find us:Through email at hello@thebigstorypodcast.ca Or @thebigstory.bsky.social on Bluesky

A major programme of works has been approved for a Clare school which the Dáil has heard is in a "decrepit condition." Following a site visit the Department of Education has given the greenlight for St.Senan's National School in Clonlara to replace its existing accommodation with new facilities that will increase the school's capacity. It's understood a block of the building built in 1968 has significantly deteriorated with reports of classrooms being cold and damp with buckled walls and dislodged windows. In the latest episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, host Tony Bruski, alongside forensic psychologist Kate Wallinga, delves into the chilling details of Rex Heuermann's property. Heuermann, suspected to be the Gilgo Beach killer, has been the focus of an ongoing investigation concerning several serial killings in Long Island. According to Wallinga, the contrast between Heuermann's professional life as an architect and the state of his home is striking. His home is in severe disrepair, starkly contrasting the aesthetic considerations you'd expect from an architect. This suggests a level of disregard for his personal environment. While this could be due to financial constraints, Wallinga posits that Heuermann might have avoided home repairs to deter contractors from potentially discovering his secrets. Bruski and Wallinga also discuss the disturbing findings at Heuermann's home, which hint at a concealed, sinister side. One such discovery is a soundproof room with unusually thick concrete walls. While it could be dismissed as a unique architectural feature, its presence raises questions about its intended use. The ongoing investigation has also turned up unusual findings in Heuermann's backyard, including unearthing small fragments that could be human remains. The presence of a pit has fueled speculation about it serving as a clandestine grave. Forensic psychologist Wallinga comments on Heuermann's ability to hide his suspected criminal activities from those closest to him: "The human capacity for weirdness is pretty big," she says, adding that we typically don't jump to worst-case scenarios when we notice odd behavior in our neighbors. She highlights how the slow accumulation of oddities, coupled with plausible explanations, could have enabled Heuermann to evade suspicion for so long. Both Bruski and Wallinga agree that Heuermann's alleged crimes align with times when his wife was out of town, suggesting that he may have used these opportunities to act on his sinister impulses. "It becomes pretty easy to say, 'Oh yeah, no, I just moved some stuff because you were out of town,'" Wallinga explains, illustrating how easily suspicious activities could be dismissed. Despite Heuermann's arrest and the mounting evidence, there is still a lot to uncover about the suspected serial killer. The investigation at Heuermann's home is expected to yield more chilling revelations, illuminating the depths of the hidden darkness in his life. As the Hidden Killers podcast continues to track this case, listeners can expect further insight into the mind and methods of an alleged killer hiding in plain sight. SONNETCAST – William Shakespeare's Sonnets Recited, Revealed, Relived
In the first of three sonnets that appear to disrupt the sequence that concerns itself with the young man's evident infidelity, Sonnet 37 revisits the themes previously encountered of the poet's keenly felt lack of luck, absence of esteem, and sorely missing success, and contrasts this with the young man's abundant riches, both material and metaphorical, describing them as a source of sustenance and survival even while Fortune bestows her gifts elsewhere.

Do you ever feel invincible? I used to feel that too and was living a very happy and fulfilling life with purpose before there was a pain I started feeling. And that was just the start. This episode is a little different and instead of interviewing a special guest, I'm the one being interviewed. In this episode, my very special friend, Kevin Monaghan joins us and interviews me on the "Fear Of Becoming Decrepit" which I got while being operated on for an Ostomy, which is a surgery to create an opening (stoma) from an area inside the body to the outside. The last months have been tough and slow but I see a light of hope at the end of the tunnel and I'm back stronger than ever. This is the first part of the two-part interview and we discuss what I went through and how everything started. When I first noticed that I needed help and the fear of becoming decrepit came into my mind. We also went through the procedure, how everything went with the doctors and how was the recovery process like. We also discuss topics like mortality and how much less time we have on this earth. This, and a lot more in the episode. Join us in the discussion.
