The Open Road Sings a LullabyZelda is a woman on the precipice of the next chapter of her life. When we sat down to speak in the twilight of the Summer of 2022 – the summer of student loan forgiveness (kind of), the summer of Mar Lago, the summer of soaring record temperatures in the Unites States – Zelda was in a reflective state as she was preparing to head off to start her freshman year at Columbia University. For Zelda and her parents John and Toby, like so many other thousands of students and their parents, the late summer season is an especially poignant time, marking the passage of life with the start of a new academic year. New clothes are bought. Marks ticked off on doorframes to record growth spurts. New dreams emerge. When I asked Zelda what her parents have given her this far into her life she said, “A great friendship. They treated us like equals. Straight from the beginning, especially in the film making process, they've allowed me and Lulu to have equal input in the storyline and what kind of film we want to make. Which has taught me that my opinion matters. It really sculpted me into the person I am now.” That great friendship with her parents and sister Lulu was forged on the vast system of roads and highways that connect the nation like arteries of a heart; eating in the tasty diners along the open road; and camping along the coastal shores of Oregon. The landscape of America. For the last 12 years of her life, Zelda and her family have explored those highways and byways in an RV, making films along the way. Suspenseful films. Horror Films. Cinematically beautiful and award-winning films that have become cult classics and caught the attention of the New York Times and Vogue, Rotten Tomatoes, and Shudder Films. Hellbender, The Deeper You Dig, and Halfway to Zen to name a few. Zelda and her family began this unusual journey, when Zelda was six years old. When dreams of creation, agency and plain old fun and adventure led them to those beckoning roads. Her notches on the doorframe are preserved in celluloid where you see a young, tiny child become the person she is now.Who is that person now? She is 18. She is a writer and a critically acclaimed actress. She is a musician. And like so many of her generation, Zelda is keenly aware of the dynamics of social and political change she is inheriting. She is also that woman on the precipice. When I ask her what her biggest leap of faith in a life has been. A life that has been a mixture of saying yes and defying convention and boundaries she says simply, “My biggest leap of faith is right now. I'm about to go off to school in six days and I am feeling excited, nervous, scared. It's a whirlwind of feelings. I think I'm just going through a really big transition right now. Going to school and not making films with my parents anymore and not having their friendship instantly, physically right by my side is going to be really really different. So, it's a big leap right now, and I'm excited for it.”We are too, Zelda. For more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com
John Adams, Lulu Adams, Zelda Adams, and Toby Poser are a family who write, produce, star in, and edit all of their films themselves. Together they've produced multiple features, including KNUCKLE JACK, RUMBLESTRIPS, THE HATRED, THE DEEPER YOU DIG, and most recently HELLBENDER which you can watch right now on Shudder on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. With HELLBENDER, the family shot the movie around the country during the pandemic using gear they bought themselves. The Adams Family is one of the most self-sufficient filmmaking outfits I've ever seen. They make all of their movies entirely on their own and don't rely on any traditional studio ecosystems whatsoever. As filmmakers, they do a particularly beautiful job of leaning into their relatively low budgets by making very singular and unique movies where every detail feels intentional. This is a testament to one of their greatest strengths as filmmakers, which is their resourcefulness. This conversation is a great lesson in economic filmmaking and low-budget features that don't feel low budget because the filmmakers embraced what they had access to. I really loved this conversation; the Adams Family are a bunch of very enthusiastic, inspiring, and passionate filmmakers with a lot to teach all of us. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with The Adams Family. Just do it. Toby, Lulu, Zelda, and John write, direct, act in, edit, color correct, and score all of their movies themselves. From the beginning, they didn't wait for permission or approval or for a deal; but instead, they took an inventory of what they had access to and wrote and produced movies around that. A lot of would-be filmmakers tend to have these big elaborate plans and expensive concepts for scripts that require lots of money and collaborators when sometimes the best way to get something off the ground is by using what is right in front of you and crafting a movie around that. Robert Rodriguez speaks extensively about this very concept in his book, REBEL WITHOUT A CREW, which is a must-read for any filmmaker. Use mother nature as your DP. There is a naturally beautiful aesthetic that comes with using natural light as well as a more grounded production design. (See Robert Eggers' THE WITCH). And, despite its obvious limitations, natural light is free. The Adams Family cites mother nature as their best DP and recommends not fighting against whatever nature gives you but embracing it and working with it, and using it to serve your movie. As a result, their movies have a gritty and very natural beauty to them, which gives them a very recognizable aesthetic. Channel your current state into your writing. After a family crisis, Toby was going through a very difficult time period when writing the script for THE DEEPER YOU DIG. She ended up channeling her feelings into her writing, and the experience was not only cathartic, but her emotions were palpable in the movie itself. The Deeper You Dig has moments that are so chilling and get so deep under your skin, and it's clear that the movie's power comes from Toby's real and raw emotion. Even Quentin Tarantino stated that if you're not putting your current emotions into your writing, you're doing it wrong. Thanks as always for listening, don't forget to subscribe. ----- Produced by Simpler Media
John Adam and Toby Poser of the Adams Family / Wonder Wheel Production join us this week. If are a Necromaniacs listener, you will undoubtedly be familiar with them. I'm had them, along with Zelda their daughter, on a guests and we've covered two of their excellent films, this year's folk horror Hellbender and The Deeper You Dig from 2019. We shifted the conversation a bit this time around to talk about music; during my previous chats with them, I discovered that we have a lot of the same interests when it comes to music, so I thought it would be fun to cover that here on EWB. Making art at this time on the planet and in this country is more important than ever. The pressure is mounting and the disconnection continues and you could allow your self to be lead by others people's thoughts and the din of social media, the cultural malaise OR you could GET DOWN AND MAKE ART, MAKE FILMS, MAKE MUSIC! That is a mantra of our guests, (another long awaited PART 2) as they have been guests on NIK POD before…The Adams Family Returns to the No, I Know Podcast! Who is the Adam's Family? John Adams, Toby Poser, and their daughters, Lulu and Zelda (collectively celebrated as Adams Family Films) are a film making family under the creative marquee of Wonder Wheel Productions. They have collaborated on six features: HELLBENDER, which premiered at Fantasia Film Festival and was acquired by Shudder/AMC Networks through Yellow Veil Pictures for an early 2022 release); The Deeper You Dig (2020), which also premiered at Fantasia and is distributed by Dark Sky Films and Arrow Video; Their other films: Halfway to Zen (2016); The Shoot (2014); Knuckle Jack (2013); and Rumblestrips (2012) - all earning a hearty reception on the international festival circuit, including Best in Show and Audience awards. For each they've employed the same DIY ethic: they write, direct, produce; they shoot, edit, act, and compose. Music in this Episode: "Drive" Written and Performed by The Adams Family and "I Remember You" (Lyrics written by Vincent Bryan and Music By Harry Von Tilzer ) performed and produced by James Harrell and Ilyana Kadushin for the soundtrack of "Deeper You Dig" by Adams Family.

John Adams is undoubtedly a triple threat worth investigation, as here he occasionally directs well, acts in a often dialogue free, nuanced performance very well, and creates a great soundtrack for this indie horror. But no way does this very limited and often ordinary film deserve the place in the pantheon of modern indie horror greats its 75% on Metacritic and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes suggests. Not worth bothering.
Written & Directed by John Adams & Toby PoserStars John Adams, Toby Poser & Zelda AdamsReleased online June 5 of this yearUnratedRuntime: 1hr 35minsRT: 94% critics, 64% audience Synopsis: Ivy is a psychic who used to be legit but now scams old ladies out of their money. She and her daughter Echo live in an isolated area in rural New York. They're content with their lonely existence until Echo goes missing. Ivy turns to the paranormal abilities she rejected to find her daughter, and signs seem to be pointing her to a new neighbor; one who is acting very suspicious...Our next movie is kind of a wild card. I don't know a thing about it except that I think the name is stupid. People seem to be liking it tho, and my cohosts were intrigued that it was described as ‘disturbing,' so here we are. Join us next time to discuss The Dark and the Wicked, which is available to rent now. Here's a trailer for ya, see what you think. I'm going in blind, myself. Might as well take advantage of not knowing a thing.Theme music: "Secret of Tiki Island" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

With the ability to film movies on an iPhone, having drones replace crane shots, cheap software to edit, and using the internet to talk to music students for scores, do-it-yourself filmmaking is more possible now than anytime before. An update New York family has done it all from A-to-Z making films. Their latest, a horror movie, entitled THE DEEPER YOU DIG (2020), was released to fantastic reviews. When Echo (Zelda Adams) decides to do a late night sledding ride, an accident occurs leading to her disappearance. Her mother Ivy (Toby Poser) begins searching for her with flyers upon telephone polls to knocking on neighbors doors. One such man, Kurt (John Adams), who is restoring a neighboring structure, tells both Ivy and the police he knows nothing about the girl. However, his role in her disappearance may be more than he says. THE DEEPER YOU DIG was co-written, co-directed, and co-starred in by husband-and-wife team John Adams and Toby Poser. Their youngest daughter Zelda Adams also stars. With a very small cast, their fantastic cinematography with night and winter filming, and strong acting, the movie has actually received a blu-ray release by boutique label, Arrow Video. Dark Discussions takes a look at this little film and gives their thoughts.
