As part of the DC Bar International Law Community's historic year of elections* initiative focusing on global principles and standards for national elections, Tzili Mor interviews Patrick (Pat) Merloe, renowned global elections expert and DC Bar member, who elucidated the evolution, progress, and current concerns about elections and human rights globally and in the United States. In addition to expert speakers on the topic, the International Law Community gathered key resources on Global Elections and Electoral Standards, including guidance for legal frameworks, equal access to voting, protections for election observers and electoral workers, electoral integrity and accountability. *This year over half the globe's population has already or will be voting in over 80 national elections, making this year the biggest election year in history, and the largest election cycle until 2048. A new federal assessment warns that artificial intelligence programs pose a significant threat to the democratic system of elections, particularly with the 2024 election cycle approaching. Next-generation technologies can be exploited to influence and sow discord in elections by creating or sharing altered or deepfaked pictures, videos, or audio clips. The Department of Homeland Security analysis outlines how generative AI tools can be used to confuse or overwhelm voters and election staff. Experts caution that authorities must be prepared to defend against AI-disseminated fake news and educate the public to counteract misinformation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tonyphoang/message
As South Africa marks 30 years of Democracy, SABC News has launched a new programme dedicated to marking this important milestone. Join Update@Noon every Tuesday, from today, as we zoom in on some of the people and events that laid the ground work for South Africa as we know it today. In the build up to the country's historic 1994 democratic elections, bloodshed, gunshots, looting and overall unrest were a common site in Bophuthatswana in March of that year. This was sparked by the announcement by Kgosi Lucas Mangope, the leader of the nominally independent South African Bantustan created under apartheid, that the territory would not participate in the general elections, which were to be held on April. Civil servants, including police and the military officers, students at the former Bophuthatswana University, as well as the general public, took to the streets, rendering the capital, Mmabatho ungovernable. Staff at the Bophuthatswana Broadcasting Corporation, would later join the strike, causing more panic for the authorities. SABC News reporter, Itumeleng Kgajane looks back at some of the events that took place then.
On the eve of the first democratic elections in South Africa, journalist, Angus Begg visited the community of Pietermaritzburg, in what is now known as KwaZulu-Natal and he spoke to them about their expectations for the historical day ahead.

Populations around the world have been electing more and more autocratic leaders in the past couple decades, via supposedly free, fair, and democratic elections. The freedom of the press is being impinged upon in many places, and fear, outrage and misinformation are often taking the place of reasoned debate. Minority populations in some countries are increasingly oppressed and vulnerable. Is democracy working? Filipino journalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, Brookings Institution Fellow Shadi Hamid and president of the advocacy group Freedom House, Michael Abramowitz, meet on stage at the 2023 Aspen Ideas Festival to share their diverse expertise about what got us to this point, and where democracy might go in the future. Journalist Ravi Agrawal from Foreign Policy moderates the conversation.

A Patron of Democracy at Work asks: "It's often said as an argument against democracy that Hitler's Nazi party was democratically elected. Is that true? How should we reconcile a belief in democracy with the fact that sometimes democracy can lead to evil people being elected?"

Who has the power of command over the (in)famous Azov regiment, which until recently defended the Ukrainian city of Mariupol under siege and was, at last, captured by the Russian forces? What kind of ideology is really followed by the Azov fighters? How popular are right-wing ideas in Ukraine in general, and how fascist is Russia? In this episode, Dr. Anton Shekhovtsov (Center for Democratic Integrity) talks to Irena Remestwenski (RECET) about the transformations of right-wing ideas both in Russia and in Ukraine. He explains the ambiguous history of the Azov regiment, breaks down the "de-nazification" narrative followed by Russia in justifying its war of aggression in Ukraine, and questions the ideology of both the Russian regime and its population. Anton Shekhovtsov is the Director of the Center for Democratic Integrity, based here in Vienna. He acts an expert for the European Platform for Democratic Elections, edits the book series Explorations of the Far Right for the publishing house ibidem, as well as the open access journal Fascism: Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies. His last book is titled Tango Noir: Russia and the Western Far-Right (Routledge 2018).
In recent weeks, there's been a flurry of revelations about the political activities of Justice Clarence Thomas's spouse, Virginia Thomas, including her text messages to Mark Meadows, then President Trump's chief of staff, that seem to espouse electoral conspiracy theories. On this episode, Jeanne Hruska speaks with Vox Senior Correspondent Ian Millhiser about what we know about Ginni Thomas's political activities, what they do or don't say about Justice Thomas's role on the Supreme Court, and about the Court's "just trust us" approach to ethics. Welcome to the Moderate Voice of America. My name is Derek Gutierrez. Our story today begins with transparency in American democracy. On Saturday, November 7th, after four days of waiting, America now has its President-elect. Or at least, we think we have a president-elect. Joe Biden was declared victorious after winning Pennsylvania, a state worth 20 electoral votes. It was a state that President Trump won back in 2016 with 48.18% of the popular vote and by 44,000 voter margin. On the contrary, he lost this year after claiming 49.1% of the popular vote but losing by 34,000 according to the Associated Press. However, the election is not over yet. President Trump has filed lawsuits against five states, claiming there was vote fraud, as well as illegally counting mail-in-ballots arriving after the election. Why should we have election recounts? In this episode, Haley talks with Yaneer Bar-Yam, President of the New England Complex Systems Institute, and Alexander Siegenfeld, a PhD physics student at MIT, about their collaborative research paper entitled: Negative Representation and Instability in Democratic Elections. They each discuss why the current political climate in the U.S. is so polarized and unstable and explore how low voter turnout leads to negative representation and further instability. Describing insights from their research, they share the importance of increasing voter turnout and weakening the two party system (through methods like ranked choice voting) in order to achieve a more stable democracy.
For the first time since 2009, Lebanon voted to elect 128 members to parliament. Saad Hariri, the current Prime Minister of Lebanon and his Sunni-dominated party fared better than expected. But he lost seats to Hezbollah, the Shiite-movement that now has more seats and pull in the parliament than ever before. As in almost any election in the Arab World, this one was marred in controversy. Voter turnout was low with less than half of the population taking to the ballots. Those who did vote accused the system of voter fraud. The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections reported over 7,000 polling violations, fights broke out in the streets, and at least three candidates accused other parties of intimidation. All said, the results will have regional ramifications. In this episode, The National’s Foreign Editor, Arthur MacMillan, dissects the results and breaks down what the new parliament makeup will mean for the region.
