Welcome to Season 14 Episode 6 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode does a deep dive into the new tennis coaching digital platform, Full Court Tennis, with its creator, former top ATP Pro, Brian Teacher. I first met Brian several years ago at the US Open Junior tournament. I've since run into him around SoCal and was excited to get him on the podcast to discuss the latest iteration of Full Court Tennis. I encourage you to watch the video version of this episode for insights as to what the platform is capable of doing for players, parents, and coaches. Here is the press release which describes it best: Virtual tennis coaching has never been easier to use since former Grand Slam champion Brian Teacher launched the improved and updated Full Court Tennis (FCT) website where players can connect with world-renowned coaches for virtual lessons making tennis coaching easily accessible and affordable for everyone. For a limited time, Teacher has announced that players and coaches of any level can sign up completely free with no credit card required. Originally launched as an iOS app two years ago, players and coaches can now sign up and connect directly on FullCourtTennis.com, where advanced features allow coaches to independently set their rates, get hired, or give free virtual lessons. This includes: • Stroke Analysis: Submit videos for in-depth feedback on your technique. • Match Analysis: Get expert insights on strategy and performance. • Live Video Call Lessons: Collaborate directly with coaches in real time to review match footage, improve techniques, or address any aspect of your game. FCT also offers innovative tools like match tagging and the ability to add multiple participants to a lesson space, making the experience collaborative and efficient. “Full Court Tennis revolutionizes the way players and coaches connect, making expert tennis coaching as easy as clicking onto a website or using the app,” said Brian Teacher. “FCT's coaches are experts in stroke development, match strategy, and mental preparation, with many having worked with top-level professional players. Functional Communication Training (FCT) is a proven strategy to replace problem behaviors with effective communication skills. In her article, Practitioners Guide for Selecting Functional Communication Responses, published in Behavior Analysis in Practice, Dr. Bethjoy Houck offers practical advice to help clinicians implement FCT successfully.FCT focuses on giving learners a way to express their needs that works for them, whether through speech, sign language, cue cards, object exchanges, or even video clips. Dr. Houck shares creative examples that encourage thinking beyond traditional methods to meet each learner's unique needs. She stresses the importance of starting with assessments like Ringdahl's MTA or Valentino et al. to identify the best Functional Communication Responses (FCRs) for the individual. Practitioners should select FCRs that reinforce desired behaviors or are incompatible with the problem behavior. FCRs should be taken seriously and not unnecessarily restricted, as maintaining open and accessible communication is key to the success of FCT.Dr. Houck emphasizes that FCT is about meeting learners where they are and giving them tools to express themselves in ways that make sense for their abilities. Whether verbal or nonverbal, communication is an essential skill, and FCT helps individuals share their needs while fostering meaningful growth. #autism #speechtherapy What's Inside:What is Functional Communication Training?5 FCT recommendations for clinicians. What is an FCR?Getting started with FCT assessments.Mentioned In This Episode:ABA Speech: HomeJoin the aba speech connection membership

In this weeks podcast, Kat introduces her friend and neighbor Margot! They discuss their friendship and how it led Margo to explore spirituality and Family Constellation Therapy (FCT). Margot shares her journey of leaving her corporate job and the physical and emotional toll it took on her. She explains how she resonated with FCT because of its focus on maternal relationships and generational emotions. Margot also discusses her struggles with putting up emotional walls and her fertility journey. They touch on the first FCT session they did together. In this conversation, Margot explains that she went into the session with an open mind and no agenda, knowing that FCT is interconnected with fertility and ancestral trauma. Kat describes the initial intake session as a bit confronting but also a quick way to reflect on deep-level emotions and uncover connections she hadn't previously made. She emphasizes the importance of being open and vulnerable during the session and highlights the power of the modality, particularly when working with the papers. Kat shares that FCT helped her give back emotions that weren't hers to carry and release the false sense of power she had taken on in her family dynamics. She believes that even just saying the healing statements out loud can be healing, regardless of one's beliefs in the energy field. Takeaways: Friendship can play a significant role in supporting and solidifying one's spiritual journey. Leaving a high-stress corporate job can be a courageous and vulnerable decision for the sake of one's well-being. Putting up emotional walls can be a protection mechanism, but it can also hinder emotional connection and growth. The initial intake session in FCT can be confronting but also provides a quick way to reflect on deep-level emotions and uncover connections. The power of FCT is felt through working with the papers, where intense emotions can be experienced and released. FCT helps individuals give back emotions that aren't theirs to carry and release false senses of power in family dynamics. Even without belief in the energy field, the act of saying healing statements out loud can be healing and lead to self-reflection and growth. Dr. Jim Moore, Chief Clinical Officer of Apollo Behavior, joins me in the 11th installment of the Apollo Case Study Series. In this podcast, Jim also brought three of his Apollo colleagues into the discussion: Lydia Lindsey, Christina Nylander, and Lauren Elliott. We started off the show with Lydia providing some background on her ABA career and how it brought her to Apollo. Spoiler alert: we managed to fit in a shout-out to Auburn University's ABA program (insert the obligatory "War Eagle" chant! (note: Christina and Lauren were guests in ACSS episodes Six and Nine, respectively). This conversation centered around the use of Differential Reinforcement of Other (DRO) behavior procedures that the Apollo team implemented with two clients. As such, we discuss the following From a conceptual perspective, is DRO a reinforcement or punishment-based intervention? Why they chose this procedure over a more specific FCT intervention. The importance of determining a precise Inter-Response Time. How to avoid ratio strain. How to successfully fade DRO schedules. Balancing the effectiveness and efficiency of behavioral interventions. The importance of accurately re-setting the DRO interval. Coaching behavioral technicians to implement this procedure correctly, even when it is challenging to do so (see Dr. Claire St. Peter's excellent work in the general area of Treatment Integrity too). The Seven Steps to Instructional Control (disclosure: Amazon Associates link). The "London Cabbies Test." The importance of conducting client-oriented research in clinical settings. This week on the podcast I speak to Dr Catia Martins about metabolic adaptation and weight loss. Catia has spent her research career answering questions around why some people experience a greater reduction in basal metabolic rate (BMR) than others when they lose weight, and how this impacts on overall weight loss success and the timing of that success. She has also studied the effects of the ketogenic diet on weight loss and how ketosis may impact this relationship. This is such a great conversation and, while a bit scientific, is interesting for general audience and practitioner/scientist alike.Dr. Martins has been investigating over the past almost 20 years how exercise and energy restricted diets impact on energy balance and body weight homeostasis, in particular their impact on appetite control. She holds a first degree (honor) in Nutrition and Dietetics from Oporto University (Portugal), a M.Sc. in Clinical Nutrition (distinction) from Roehampton University, London (UK) and a Ph.D. from University of Surrey (UK). She has received an awards from the British Nutrition Society in 2007 and Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) in 2008 in recognition of her research on the effects of exercise on appetite control. In 2008, after completion of her Ph.D., she was awarded a Post Doctoral fellowship (from FCT, Portugal) to investigate the effects of exercise-induced weight loss on appetite-related peptides and motivation to eat in individuals with obesity, at NTNU, under the mentorship of Prof. John Blundell (University of Leeds, UK). Two years later, in 2010, Dr. Martins was awarded a research grant from Central Norway Regional Health Authority/NTNU to lead a project on “High-intensity intermittent training to maximize metabolic and cardiovascular protection in individuals with obesity” in collaboration with Dr. Neil King (Queensland University of Technology, Australia) and Prof. Linda Morgan (University of Surrey, UK).She is at the moment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) investigating the physiology of the reduced-obese state in collaboration with Dr. Barbara Gower, Dr. Gary Hunter and Dr. James Hill. Dr. Martins is particularly interested in understanding the phenomenon of metabolic adaptation (a reduction in energy expenditure below predicted levels) and its clinical relevance.Dr. Martins has published several original papers and reviews on the impact of exercise and energy restricted diets (namely ketogenic diets) on appetite control and energy metabolism and is a regular speaker at the European Congress of Obesity. Functional communication, or FCT, is a way to decrease problem behavior through teaching effective communication skills. Shira once had a student who had a ton of language. He would talk all the time in sentences and communicate what he wanted to do, but he didn't request things. He sometimes engaged in negative attention-seeking behavior but didn't know how to appropriately get attention. She taught him how to mand for attention by using text cues, which is an FCT technique, and he stopped engaging in aggression. All behavior is communication, and they're two sides of the same coin. Kids don't misbehave because they're bad or challenging, they're trying to get attention to get their needs met and it's often effective. With FCT, we are looking at how to increase the skill and give the child a replacement for the negative or unwanted behavior. The replacement needs to be faster, easier, and better than the negative behavior. Here, we discuss where to start when teaching mands, how to collect data, and how to avoid developing chains of responses by using transfer trials. What's Inside:What FCT is and how it helps correct unwanted behavior.Where to start when teaching mands. How to collect data. The importance of transfer trials.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramThe Purpose of Transfer Trials

_______________ Obrigado aos mecenas do podcast: Julie Piccini, Ana Raquel Guimarães Galaró family, José Luís Malaquias, Francisco Hermenegildo, Nuno Costa, Abílio Silva, Salvador Cunha, Bruno Heleno, António llms, Helena Monteiro, BFDC, Pedro Lima Ferreira, Miguel van Uden, João Ribeiro, Nuno e Ana, João Baltazar, Miguel Marques, Corto Lemos, Carlos Martins, Tiago Leite Tomás Costa, Rita Sá Marques, Geoffrey Marcelino, Luis, Maria Pimentel, Rui Amorim, RB, Pedro Frois Costa, Gabriel Sousa, Mário Lourenço, Filipe Bento Caires, Diogo Sampaio Viana, Tiago Taveira, Ricardo Leitão, Pedro B.
