College Uncovered Season 4 is coming! The first two episodes drop Thursday, April 17th. This season, we're standing on the precipice of a “demographic cliff” threatening higher education. A drop in the number of 18-year-olds that are alive right now – triggered by a decline in birth rates after the 2008 Great Recession – is forcing colleges to rethink everything. Schools across the country are changing admissions, restructuring financial aid, rebranding the humanities, and finding new ways to recruit and educate young men, whose numbers are dropping even more precipitously on many campuses. We'll uncover how these changes affect students, families, higher education, the economy, and our society at largeCollege Uncovered is hosted by Kirk Carapezza and Jon Marcus, two skilled multimedia journalists with decades of experience in covering higher education in the United States. They offer students, their families, and anyone curious about the business of college, an unvarnished look at a uniquely American system – and help you make better informed choices. New episodes of College Uncovered drop each week through May and are available wherever you listen to podcasts.

The entire edifice of higher education and industry depends on a steady flow of students coming in and qualified graduates flowing out. What happens to the system when the crucial input of applicants drops dramatically? Amy and Mike invited journalist Jon Marcus to answer that very question, because the dreaded demographic cliff is here. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What exactly is a demographic cliff? What have colleges done to prepare for a decline in applicants? Which schools are most and least threatened by the demographic cliff? How does the demographic pattern benefit applicants? How will this shift in population impact schools and society? Jaime Hunt speaks with Jenny Petty about a pressing issue few are discussing: the “Search Cliff.” While the “Demographic Cliff” has been a hot topic for years, the Search Cliff highlights a significant shift in the availability of prospective student data, fundamentally altering how higher education institutions attract and enroll students. Tune in as Jenny breaks down this emerging challenge, its implications, and strategies institutions can adopt to stay ahead of the curve.Key TakeawaysThe “Search Cliff” refers to the rapid decline in the availability of student data due to changing privacy laws and the shift to test-optional admissions policies.Name purchases, once a cornerstone of enrollment marketing, are yielding significantly fewer enrollments, dropping from 0.131% in 2019 to 0.043% in 2023.Institutions must pivot to focus on organic lead generation, content marketing, and paid media strategies to fill the funnel.Strong collaboration between MarCom and enrollment management teams is essential for addressing these challenges effectively. The future of higher education marketing will demand creative, technology-driven solutions, including leveraging AI and exploring new engagement strategies. What is the Search Cliff, and How Does it Differ From the Demographic Cliff? The Search Cliff represents a dramatic reduction in the availability of prospective student names for purchase. This trend is driven by shifting privacy laws and the widespread adoption of test-optional policies during COVID-19. Unlike the well-documented Demographic Cliff, which focuses on population decline, the Search Cliff underscores the limitations of traditional name-buying practices. These changes threaten to disrupt enrollment marketing strategies reliant on purchased names to drive funnel growth. Why is the Search Cliff Happening Now? Jenny explains that privacy laws in over 20 states are restricting access to student data, while the move to test-optional admissions has further limited name availability. Institutions that once relied on buying large lists of prospective student names to fuel enrollment pipelines are seeing diminishing returns. For example, the yield rate for purchased names has plummeted by 56%, making traditional tactics increasingly unsustainable. How Can Higher Education Marketers Adapt? Jenny offers several solutions to address the Search Cliff:Invest in Inbound Marketing: Organic lead generation through blogs, white papers, and gated content can create a steady pipeline of interest over time.Shift to Paid Media and Social Advertising: Institutions must build robust paid advertising strategies to compete in an increasingly crowded digital space.Leverage AI Tools: AI-powered technologies, such as virtual recruiters and chatbots, can enhance student engagement and streamline the recruitment process.Rethink Organizational Structure: Jenny emphasizes the need to evaluate team roles, particularly as AI reshapes the workload and demands of MarCom teams. What Role Should Leadership Play in Navigating This Shift? For institutions to succeed, leaders need to embrace marketing as a strategic driver of revenue and success. CMOs should foster partnerships with enrollment management teams and educate themselves about institutional budget models, financial aid strategies, and marketing ROI. Additionally, integrating marketing leaders into cabinet-level discussions ensures their voices are heard in key decisions about institutional priorities. What Does Success Look Like in the Era of the Search Cliff? Jenny challenges institutions to rethink traditional measures of success, such as application volume, and instead focus on retention and lifelong student value. As higher education faces intense scrutiny and competition, institutions must align product offerings, pricing strategies, and marketing efforts with the evolving needs of today's students. - - - -Connect With Our Host:Jaime Hunthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jaimehunt/https://twitter.com/JaimeHuntIMCAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:Confessions of a Higher Ed CMO is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. The demographic cliff - a controversial idea that declining population growth will trigger economic disaster. But is it real or just sensationalized clickbait pushed by those with an agenda?Investment advisor Harry Dent popularized demographic cliff fears in the mid-2000s to sell his financial advice (and a book, of course). From there, it became a favored trope in education, where school administrators - from K-12 to college - worried about not having enough enrolled students. Recently, concerns have shifted to plummeting birth rates in South Korea, China, and Canada. But throughout history, similar narratives have repeatedly stoked moral panic about changing demographics - from Gen X's alleged lack of work ethic to Millennials' supposed disinterest in homeownership and parenthood. Cutting through the hype, Farrah and Adam expose who gains from pushing demographic doomsday myths and why resisting these misleading narratives matters.Mentioned Resources:Harry Dent's book "The Demographic Cliff": https://www.amazon.com/Demographic-Cliff-Survive-Prosper-Deflation/dp/1591847273New York Times article on China's demographic challenges: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/business/china-birth-rate.htmlWhy Pew Research Center is no longer reporting on generations: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/05/22/how-pew-research-center-will-report-on-generations-moving-forward/New York Times Op Ed on the population of school-aged children dropping: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/14/opinion/declining-enrollment.htmlNational Post article on the Canadian birth rate drop off: https://nationalpost.com/opinion/canadas-birth-rate-has-dropped-off-a-cliff-and-its-because-nobody-can-afford-housingFind us at www.inthedemopodcast.com where you can also sign up for our newsletter. You can also find us on twitter or instagram at @inthedemopod for updates and clips, and on LinkedIn. MCALLEN, Texas - The reason dozens of universities and colleges from other parts of the country are actively recruiting in the Rio Grande Valley can be explained in part by the so-called “Demographic Cliff.”This is the opinion of Dr. Adolfo Santos, first assistant provost at the Texas A&M University Higher Eduction Center in McAllen. Santos is also a professor of political science at the Bush School at Texas A&M in College Station. The “Demographic Cliff” is a termed coined by economist and Professor Nathan Grawe of Carleton College. Grace says it is a major headwind for higher education, as it is anticipated that the number of 18-22 year-olds will be significantly lower over the next two decades.Asked by so many other universities and colleges want to lure away the Valley's best and brightest, Santos said: “The demographic changes that are happening in our country are such that young people are disappearing in droves from higher education. This is particularly true in the Midwest. It's particularly true in the New England region. There are lots of parts of the United States where there just aren't enough young people to keep the university that exists going.”Santos said that is not true in the Valley.“We are graduating over 20,000 kids from high school (per year) in the four counties that make up the Rio Grande Valley. And they (universities and colleges from other parts of the country) are realizing, oh, this is where the young people aren't. Let's come and try and recruit them, to take them away to other places.”Santos said Texas A&M is trying to meet the demand here.“We know, from our own experience, that we can admit a lot of students to our university (in College Station) from the Rio Grande Valley but if they don't enroll it, if they don't start, because they don't want to go far from home, we've lost that opportunity. So, our leadership rightly said, well, let's build a campus where they are, and that's why we're here (in McAllen).”Santos added: “The changes that we're seeing in higher education are referred to as the Demographic Cliff. A lot of universities are struggling in a very significant way to keep their heads above water because they don't have the revenue coming in from tuition and fees and that sort of thing that students would bring in. So, some of them are starting to realize, hey, why don't we go where the students are and they're coming to places like the Rio Grande Valley.”Santos made his comments in an exclusive and in-depth audio interview with the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service at an Open House A&M held recently at the McAllen campus. In the interview, Santos spoke about future plans for the McAllen center and gave his suggestions on how the Valley can stop the so-called Brain Drain. In my early twenties, my brother handed me a copy of one of Harry Dent's books, and I was an instant fan. In The Great Boom Ahead, he stood virtually alone in forecasting the economic growth of the 1990s, and in The Demographic Cliff, he foreshadowed the deflation that was about to hit. Fast forward to today, and I couldn't be more excited to talk to Harry about his new book, Zero Hour: Turn the Greatest Political and Financial Upheaval in Modern History to Your Advantage. His latest work outlines why we're on the verge of massive social, economic, and political upheaval and the steps everyone can take to protect themselves. In our conversation today, we dig into his powerful methodology for accurately predicting boom and bust cycles, how living off of stimulus simply fuels inflation and delays the inevitable, and why high-end residential and commercial real estate are likely to get hit hardest. He also shares some great tips and how to prepare your portfolio for the coming crash and the potentially incredible buying opportunities on the other side. Key Takeaways with Harry Dent Why Harry thinks that our current bubble has peaked for stocks–and why he's expecting to see certain stocks drop by as much as 86%. Why certain real estate markets will likely drop by at least 25-30% in the years to come. The advantages of owning apartments and investing for cash flow–and why now's the time to sell your assets that don't cash flow. How the Fed's decisions during the Great Recession and the COVID crisis propped up an economy that should've stayed sideways. Why 2025 could be our next big economic boom. Want the Full Show Notes? In 2025, we will see a multi-decade “demographic cliff,” resulting from declining birth rates during the Great Recession. In this episode of For Your Institution, Mongoose talks about ways schools can meet this challenge. Topics discussed include how colleges can regain trust as it erodes in higher education and how institutions can differentiate themselves from their peers to increase enrollment.
Reported by Higher Ed Dive, the birth rate decline since the 2008 recession is going to start showing up in our 2025 entering classes. But will this 15% decline be an inevitability for all institutions, or hit some harder than others? Specifically in Connecticut, where population growth already ranked 48th out of 50 states, institutions like Western Connecticut State University are using big data modeling to find new pockets of students their prior enrollment marketing targeting would have ignored.
Employment has grown by 887,000 monthly on average since April 2020 as the economy got back on its feet. Now that we're back to pre-pandemic employment conditions, the pace of hiring will grind down very quickly.

It’s not the time for panic. It’s time to look at the coronavirus pandemic with a clear head to figure out what we should do. It’s a bad situation, but we can get through it. With the right knowledge and precautions, we can protect ourselves and our finances. Today’s guest is economist Harry Dent. He will give us a detailed look at the good, the bad, and the ugly -- not necessarily in that order. Harry talks about where we are now with the COVID-19 pandemic, what’s happening in different countries, what happened during past pandemics, what’s likely to happen with this one, the risk to our health, the risk to our finances, and some ideas on where we might want to put our money. He's been predicting a financial reckoning for some time now and is often described as the voice of doom and gloom, but he doesn’t sugar coat the truth and that’s what we need right now. This pandemic is a big wake-up call. Harry is the co-founder of Dent Research. He’s appeared on “Good Morning America,” PBS, CNBC, CNN, and Fox News. Well, at least Bill Clinton knew what he was doing with the economy, or Bill Clinton did a great Job with the economy or even the dreaded, it's all Bush's fault, pavlovian response. Up until now Republican's have pointed out things like well Clinton had a Republican Congress during the boom years or George H.W. Bush laid the groundwork that Bill benefited from etc. etc. source Wikipedia In Econ 101 you learn very early on that a President can do a whole hell of a lot to mess up an economy while in office but there is not a lot of benefits they can reap from their actions while in office. The Federal Reserve Chairman is also accepted by economists as having more of an impact on the economy than the President. Economist realize this but leftist do not. Eight years is not enough time to shift major macroeconomic forces for the better as many of these actions take a long time to play out and are often laden with unintended consequences. Technically with the power of the purse, the Congress is also more directly responsible for economic conditions than the President. Speaking of Major Macroeconomic forces, none is more powerful than demographics. Demographists can use population and birth rate data to predict major trends. The most prolific researcher in this field is Harry Dent Jr. In his book “The Demographic Cliff” Harry's brilliant research attempts to predict the future. By now you're probably wondering, how he can use demographic information to predict the future? Using data from the US Census Bureau, Mr. Dent found that the average American spends the most amount of money when they are 46 years old. https://libertarianadvisor.podbean.com/ Help us stay in touch for our inevitable purge: The Liberty Advisor .com/subscribe Listen on to the mp3 on your favorite platforms itunes Google Play Stitcher Player FM Podbean Livestreaming @ /thelibertyadvisor on Dlive, Twitch and Bitchute Also on Facistbook Streaming some of our shows on the following decentralized platforms.. https://dlive.tv/thelibertyadvisor https://www.twitch.tv/thelibertyadvisor https://www.bitchute.com/thelibertyadvisor www.thelibertyadvisor.com to find the links for podcast subscriptions Schedule a complimentary Investment consultation with Tim: Limited Time only Inquire about Tim speaking on your show or conference: info@thelibertyadvisor.com Sign up for the free Crypto course here: http://www.thelibertyadvisor.com/crypto-video-guide/ Interested in having Crypto in your IRA: www.thelibertyadvisor.com/lp

Harry S. Dent Jr. studied economics in college in the ’70s, but found it vague and inconclusive. He became so disillusioned by the state of his chosen profession that he turned his back on it. Instead, he threw himself into the burgeoning new science of finance where identifying and studying demographic, technological, consumer and many, many other trends empowered him to forecast economic changes. Since then, he’s spoken to executives, financial advisors and investors around the world. He’s appeared on “Good Morning America,” PBS, CNBC and CNN/Fox News. He’s been featured in Barron’s, Investor’s Business Daily, Entrepreneur, Fortune, Success, U.S. News and World Report, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, American Demographics and Omni. He is a regular guest on Fox Business’s “America’s Nightly Scorecard.” Harry has written numerous books over the years. In his book The Great Boom Ahead, published in 1992, he stood virtually alone in accurately forecasting the unanticipated boom of the 1990s. That same year he authored two consecutive best sellers: The Roaring 2000s and The Roaring 2000s Investor (Simon and Schuster). In The Next Great Bubble Boom, he offered a comprehensive forecast for the following two decades. In The Great Depression Ahead, he outlined how the next great downturn is likely to unfold in three stages, with an interim boom stage between 2012 and 2017 before the long-term slowdown finally turns into the next global boom in the early 2020s. In The Great Crash Ahead (2011), he outlined how the next great crash is likely to unfold in the coming months. He explained why there is nothing the government can do to protect us as deflation takes hold of the economy. He also recently finished his book, Spending Waves: The Scientific Key To Predicting Market Behavior for the Next 20 Years, an information-packed guide for any serious business owner. Harry’s latest book, The Demographic Cliff – How to Survive and Prosper During the Great Deflation of 2014–2019, shows why we’re facing a “great deflation” after five years of stimulus — and what to do about it now. You don't have to be a world-class economist to understand that the level of debt the country has taken on is not sustainable. You also don't need to be a world-class economist to know that this election cycle is and continues to be anything but business as usual. It does help however to be a world-class economist if you're to predict with any level of certainty - the economic future that each candidate brings to the forum. The majority of Americans recognize that at some point the country has to do an-about-face, that there are difficult decisions to make, and that someone is going to have to make these tough choices. Harry S. Dent Jr. joins me with his predictions on the 2016 general election. Specifically what does our economy look like over the next four years if Donald Trump becomes President? And equally how does it take shape under a Hillary Clinton Presidency It's a very candid conversation as Dent describes this 'new reality' that the nation will be faced with. Keeping it all in context, I asked Dent if there was any possibility that the new administration that moves into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue might be able to avoid some of these major hiccups? “If a politician could come into office and say, okay I didn’t create this problem - but we have a big problem and here it is..." Dent then went further to suggest something that has never been done before in America, and as he says, it maybe risky, but the alternative is not pretty. There are experts who study the economy - we call them Economists, and then there is Harry S. Dent Jr. The attraction with Harry is he doesn't sugarcoat everything and he doesn't tell you falsehoods or some fairytale of the truth - he will tell it to you straight. After the great setback of 10% in January of 2016, by the end of the first quarter, it seemed liked all of the noise just suddenly stopped. Markets rebounded and didn’t look back. So what happened to the story? What about the “China Bubble”? What about depressed oil prices getting ready to crush banks who loaned the frackers up to $1 trillion that won’t be paid back? What about Europe on the edge of more default? In this episode Host Bruce Weide digs under the surface to find out what the “smart money” is thinking, exploring the recent media appearances of 4 of the most studied, if not successful market forecasters and investors. HARRY S. DENT: Founder of Dent Research, author of The Demographic Cliff, and chief writer for the daily Economy & Markets. DONALD TRUMP: Renown billionaire investor, developer and 2016 Presidential candidate. DAVID STOCKMAN: Outspoken proponent of free markets, Stockman served as Dir. Of the Office of Management and Budget directly under President Ronald Reagan. MARC FABER: Billionaire Swiss investment manager and Editor of the Doom, Boom and Gloom Report.

Did you know Japan also had a Baby Boom? It just happened to be about 20 years ahead of us. Remember when Japan was supposedly going to be buying all of California in the late 1980's? What happened? Why did their economy retreat on the world stage? You've heard Bruce declare it before. DEMOGRAPHICS! Today, Japan produces 1.4 children for every couple. It's population is literally shrinking! In this episode Bruce takes you inside emptying villages in Japan and demonstrates the connection of economic slowdowns to slowdowns in good ole baby-making.
